Friday! And we're doing (ironically, sorry, and our usual prohibition on political discussion stands) A House Divided. Our community project for today: wear two fragrances from the same house, but don't layer (one on each wrist, or whatever). Thanks to Lisa D for the suggestion!
I'm wearing Parfum d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers and Parfum d'Empire Corsica Furiosa. They wear quite nicely together!
Reminder: on 7/1, wear a fragrance by Olivia Giacobetti, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Rien and Rien Intense. They are quite well behaved together. Predictably I prefer the original, but Intense is very, very good as well. Both are great if you want to keep focused.
This just got me thinking about wearing multiple flankers in the same way – not layered – and then I thought about Angel and shuddered. I’m glad Rien works well in this case.
I briefly thought about wearing two of the Angel flankers, the leather and the 2013 liqueur de parfum, and then I realized I might not survive the experience. There are limits.
🙂
I don’t think many would survive!
I once wore Angel and A*Men simultaneously, for science (well, a review). I’m relatively unscathed 🙂
Layered Angel and Alien – they were surprisingly well-behaved together. Relatively speaking, of course. 😉
I’m wearing Angel on the right and Angel muse on the left. And I smell great – but on the other hand, I’m not at the office. It’s midsummer in Sweden, so it’s a holiday, and the both Angel are very festive 🙂
Mandragore & Duel (Annick Goutal). TGIF! 🙂
That sounds like a nice combo.
Duel is winning the duel 😉
Sampling Mugler’s Supra Floral on one wrist and Chyprissime on the other. Liking Supra Floral better but I could see Chyprissime as a nice summer wear
Oh! I wish I had thought of that one! Enjoy!
You smell wonderful.
À la nuit / Fleurs de Citronnier Serge (Serge Lutens)
Ah, I like that idea!
You smell lovely.
Happy Friday beautiful people!
I am in a house divided: Cepes & tuberose and ancient resins body oil
Oh, perfect.
Wow.
I was going to do Cuir de Gardenia and Bergamoss (solid) but finally opted for Puredistance. We were almost cousins!
I went a little crazy with this project: I’m wearing 4 of my 4160 Tuesdays samples! On one arm: Urura’s Tokyo Cafe (raspberry roses and violets) and Tart’s Knicker Drawer (Spicy amber floral that’s not nearly as raunchy as its name).
On the other arm: Lady Rose Lion (unique rose chypre) and Goddess of Love and Perfume (very fruity fruity chypre).
I smell like everything today!
4 — you probably win today!
A perfume harlequin — I love it!
You win
I do this often when trying things for comparison and have to write down a little map so I remember what’s where!
I have Ann Gerard Perle de Mousse on one arm and Ciel d’Opale on the other. My first time wearing the Ciel. Smells similar to Tauer Zeta to me. I’ll have to do a side-by-side later. Happy Friday everyone!
That sounds really lovely. I own both and adore both.
They go well together. I got the discovery set and I like all 4, with Rose Cut and Perle de Mousse at the top of the quartet.
Very nice to meet you today! Sorry we had a jet off ????
So nice to meet you, too! And the adorable kiddos????
And I ended up in Anthropologie on the way to the train. Bought some bar soap on sale-cardamom and coffee. Mmm.
Also, PSA, they have Jardains d’Ecrivains Orlando & Gigi on sale for $59.00 (I have them on each hand now). Orlando is the more interesting of the 2 but I don’t need either.
I refined a scone recipe to include dried cherries, golden raisins and cardamom. Good combo.
Ooo, pretty!
Thanks!
I was thinking of doing Chanel, but went with Ormonde Jayne instead: Ta’if and Osmanthus.
Really glad it’s Friday. Even though it was a short week for me, I still haven’t entirely recovered from vacation. Will be doing lots of snoozing this weekend and hopefully kicking my butt back in gear for next week aka my busy week because… reports *sigh*. I’ve actually been trying to get a head start and slowly, worked on some of them this week.
Timely and great smelling perfumes. Hope they help you enjoy the weekend.
At first I thought it would be a bit overpowering, but both have settled nicely.
Thank you very much. I hope you have a great weekend too!
Lovely! I think most OJs work well together as they have this similarity in the base.
Now that it’s late in the day, yes I definitely notice the similarity in the bases of these.
you smell great!
JHAG Romantina on my neck and Lady Vengeance on my wrists. They smell really lovely together.
I bet they do, both of them are so pretty just on their own.
Oh, very nice combo!
I’m at my in-laws this morning, making it easier to make a morning eye appointment, but with very limited perfume resources. Wearing Azemour and Equistris and being thankful that I know my optometrist well enough to tell him to shut up if he tells me I stink. The Equistris is winning in the sillage department, but Azsmour is putting up a fight. I smell…interesting. Hope the waiting room isn’t crowded.
I love both of those, but wouldn’t want to wear them together. I think Azemour would work quite well with Fougère Bengale or Eau de Gloire or Iskander.
I was thinking of wearing Azemour with Cuir Ottoman or Eau de Gloire but forgot to re-pack my overnight stash. The nice lady who does the ocular pre-testing was choking, so I imagine I smell atrocious 😳 I’m familiar enough with both fragrances that I distinguish one from the other or else I think I would be suffering.
I think Tabac Tabou may be a good interloper in your House 🙂
Well, I don’t know why I didn’t think to layer with Tabac Tabou or Musc Tonkin. Im pretty sure I have a sample of Musc Tonkin in my purse someplace. My brain just isn’t firing on all cylinders today. I had to count in my head when I was asked my age this afternoon. Sheesh!
Another Annick Goutal pair: Eau d’Hadrien and Eau du Sud. Eau du Sud dominates.
You smell great! I considered Hadrien Absolu and EdS this morning but went with Mandragore/Duel instead.
You smell goooooood! I love this combo….and the herbal angle of Sud.
Giacobetti week early (I’ll be in Greece) project Day 5 – Safran Troublant.
I’m so glad you mentioned you are going to Greece, I had forgotten 😉
wait…who’s going to Greece?:)
Greece, really?
Not to rub it in or anything but we’ve already booked to go back at the end of August. Exhausting, right?
In case I forget will you please remind me?
Oh, I feel for you — what a tiring summer.
Good choice! Such a wonderful scent. It’s my only full-bottle Giacobetti so it’s what I’ll be in come next Friday.
I recently rediscovered samples of a couple of high-end Guerlains, so that seemed like just the thing for today. On the one hand (my right): Arsène Lupin Voyou, a big yummy masculine sandalwood with a bright fresh top. On the other: Vega, a big explodey aldehydic floral (more like Clinique Wrappings than the Chanel No. 5 it’s often compared to). If you let someone smell both and told them Voyou was Vega Pour Homme, they’d believe you, because the two share some indefinable DNA (and also quite a bit of sandalwood).
I never would have noticed the family resemblance if I hadn’t worn them side by side. I would love to smell a unisex cross between them.
I went to our shiny new Saks the other day (in Houston) and at the fancy new Guerlain counter, the dedicated sales associate told me, “Oh, Liu? It’s the exact same as Chanel No 5. If you like Chanel no 5 but want it in a different bottle, you should buy Liu.” Ehm, what?
Well, in fairness, they ARE pretty similar. There’s not much doubt that Liu was based on No. 5. But they are NOT the same! Bad salesperson!
Modern and classic Guerlains here, Terracotta and Chamade (judicious applications!) I’m a floral bouquet.
I was wondering what would wear well with Terracotta. Chamade is one I hadn’t thought of, but expect works well.
I thought it was going to be too hot to wear ELDO Like This and La Fin du Monde so instead I am in Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and Noir Pour Femme?!? People are going to smell ME coming down the block!
…who says there’s not a day when this is required? They’ll know you mean business!
I approve.
that’ll be some good-smelling sillage though. 😀
I love your style! Go big or go home. You smell great…I just wonder which scent predominates? I have this image of you striding in a cloud of AWESOME.
Half twins! I did Oud Wood and Tobacco Vanille. We smell great!
Tbis combo sounds good!
Sampling Juliette Has A Gun not a perfume on one arm and gentlewoman on the other. Gentlewoman is nice, very almondy, kind of smells like almond paste that I use for cooking. Now I want a french style almond apricot tart …
Serge Lutens Fleur de Oranger and Fleur de Citronnaire.
Happy Friday to all!
Great combo!
Happy Friday y’all! Today, one one arm, I have Guerlain’s Cologne Imperiale and on the other, their Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. As wonderful as this is, it’ll all be gone before I finish typing th….*poof*….and there it goes. 😉 I’ll just spritz again.
I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes on one arm and Jour Absolu on the other.
Nah, already did Chanel this week.
Gender confussssssion.
The Butch civet/floral Ungaro Diva EDP.
The pretty boy Dior Homme on the other arm.
Triple strength coffee, and Led Zeppelin boxed set for breakfast.
Play at maximum volume, indeed.
😀
Rock and Roll Bear, ROCK and ROLL!
When I was younger and dumber and Diva was new, I thought it couldn’t possibly be worn by a man. I loved it, and I bought it for a friend, but I wouldn’t ever wear it myself.
Now I know better. It’s genius. Everyone should smell so good.
Sounds and smells fabulous! May try all of this tomorrow 🙂
Rock on
It all sounds fabulous!
Thumbs up Everyone!
Carpe Diem! 😉
Max volume at breakfast?! I feel so old…
That was a prophetic theme, indeed.
I went all out with A la Nuit on one hand and Fleurs d’Oranger on the other. Not really matching my mood, but I feel defiant. And I smell like the biggest white flower boquet ever assembled.
You just need a wee bit of Tubéreuse Criminelle to top it off 🙂
Indeed 🙂 Strangely, I don’t have a drop of TC and haven’t smelled it for a long time. I really should remedy it at some point.
Pretty sure it still smells crazy – but in a good way!
That can and will be remedied!
You are the BWF! And you smell fabulously defiant.
Thank you! And yes, BWF with a big B 🙂
I join you in the flower boquet and smell like the biggest bunch of roses ever assembled, in equally defiant mode, Annick Goutal’s Rose Absolue on one arm and Quel Amour! on the other.
You smell beautiful. I once tested Portrait of a Lady, Une Rose, Lyric and Ta’if simultaneously – that was a bit much 🙂
OMG – I’m not sure I even want to imagine what that would smell like. I love a good rose, but that’s OD’ing for sure.
wonderful, you smell lovely!
Thanks! You smell lovely, too!
Anniky, you smell like what the world needs- beauty and fabulousness.
A lovely thing to say, thank you.
Oh yes, that must give a wonderful sillage! Great choice!
Thank you! I love both scents and they work well together – same family. Hopefully colleagues agree 🙂
I’m not sure if I cheated on this one or not as mine are meant to be layered – I’m in Jo Malone – Carrot and Fennel on my arms and Nasturtium & Clover everywhere else. I really like the carrot – that one lasts all day and wafts a pretty iris scent – first wearing of the Nasturtium & Clover.
Not cheating in my book
Not cheating, especially since they aren’t physically layered
La maison de la Vanille Vanille givree des Antilles on one arm and Vanille sauvage de Madagascar on the other. Cheeting a bit? Or, at least, playing it safe 🙂
That’s “cheating”
I don’t consider it cheating. 🙂 You smell great!
Mohur on one arm and Pichola on the others. I don’t much care for Pichola BUT it works next to Mohur.
HAHA, just one “other” arm, not plural
It’s too late, now we know the truth!
This made me giggle!
????Though you might be a carny.
I am reading The Rook (recommended by Creosote). You’re normal 😉
I’m in Neela Vermeire today too, so I guess, we’re scent cousins if not exactly twins, right? You can’t go wrong with Mohur.
I love Pichola and Mohur so to me you smell divine – from both sides.
I so wanted to play today, I had planned on Narciso edp and Narciso L’absolu. Unfortunately I am feeling a bit under the weather and don’t think I can tolerate much scent. Wearing a tiny bit of Commodity Mimosa.
Sorry you aren’t feeling well and hope it passes quickly.
Hope you feel better soon! What is the Mimosa like? I haven’t smelled that one yet.
if you have smelled Atelier Orange Sanguine, it is very similar. The Mimosa has more floral in it. it’s a very pretty and relaxed fragrance.
Get better!
Feel better soon!
It’s an earth shattering Friday of fragrance pairings. Everyone smells so fantastic and inspiring! The Corsica Furiosa is moving high up on the “buy” list.
Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. They complement each other, especially for summer.
Nice!
perfect!
This could be an impressionist painting… Narcisse bleu dans un jardin sur le Nil.
Guerlain: Cruel Gardenia on one arm, Cologne Imperiale on the other. NOT compatible lol. The CI will fade soon, then I’ll blast that arm with CG.
Blast away
FM purple flowers…
On my left, En Passant, which, in spite of me dumping half my sample vial on my arm, has passed on already. Lovely while it lasts but so fleeting!
On my right, the perennial favorite, Iris Poudre! So pretty, I wore my little dress with a floral print to match. It has both purple and pink Iris, as well as something that could be construed as lilacs.
I feel all put together. These Friday assignments are genius!
Oooh, this sounds so lovely.
great choices!
SOTD: Amouage Beloved on the left wrist and Journey on the right.
Quite a fun friday challenge 🙂
Wow! Choosing two Amouages to wear, both lovely, but big, is a bold choice. Way to commit! Have fun.
I was very tempted to do Amouage today, but I don’t think the office would survive.
I was thinking of Beloved and Lyric but it’s a warm day and I’must out in public.????
Like Eleebelle (hi almost-twin!) I went with Neela Vermieres…Pichola and Bombay Bling!
I’m a one-woman Holi festival as a result. Colours everywhere. Mango, orange, spices, spices, flowers, whoa!
Pichola works better for me and I wouldn’t combo these again but it is making me smile.
I see you dancing on top of a mountain in the bright sunshine with your skirt twirling! Happy people are singing behind you. You smell delicious!!
I love that image, wish I actually was there!
you smell wonderful!
What a great scent experience!
So cool! You must smell fantastic! I guess I have to get Pichola, it sounds like a great deal of fun.
You smell amazing!
In a summery, light, Friday mood so I’m wearing Soleil Blanc and Neroli Portofino. Oh, and last night I put on some Fleur de Chine. I love it even more than ever. No regrets on the flacon.
That combo sounds so pretty and summery 🙂
You smell fantastic and ready for the world’s fanciest beach.
That does sound nice.
Perfecto for summer!
For now, Tom Ford White Patchouli and Black Orchid Voile d’Fleur. VdF is kicking WP in the teeth. After a shower later, I’m going to try L’Artisan Seville l’Aube and La Haie Fleurie.
Wow, really? I would not have guessed which would win.
SOTD FM Carnal Flower on left wrist and Lys Mediterranee on the right. At first Carnal Flower dominated completely but now LM has taken over.
Flowers seems fitting since Midsummers Eve is celebrated today in Sweden. Think greenery, flowers, dancing, herring, midnight sun, to much alcohol and many babies made 🙂
you smell incredible!
Mmmm, sounds great!
My house of choice today is ELdO. One one arm I have Putain des Palaces, and on the other I have Vraie Blonde. They’re really not bad together.
There’s an interesting theme going on, there. I guess ELdO lends itself to that kind of thing more than most lines.
How interesting! I will try that combo tomorrow.
Robin, we were almost twins! Those two do sound good, and green, together. I opted for a South-of-Francey thing and did Caligna and Rose Privée — they work beautifully together. I suppose they’ll wash away when I go swimming this morning, but I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
I just tried Caligna for the first time. Very cooling for the heat.
Perfect!
I misremembered the instructions and put on two rose fragrances, from different houses: Sospiro Wardasina and Mancera Black Line. Oh well, it’s a happy day anyway!
That is actually a great twist on today’s theme. We should do a friday like that!
Agree, good idea!
Wearing Au Dela and Seyrig, as I continue making my way through the Bruno Fazzolari sample pack. Au Dela is ravishing, and Seyrig is very crisp. Tomorrow is the big day – taking my niece out for her first bottle of perfume, and afternoon tea at the Drake Hotel. I’m really excited, and can’t wait to see what she picks. Also might pick up a little something for myself – I don’t usually shop at brick and mortar stores and am looking forward to the experience.
You smell great. Enjoy the afternoon. My aunt is the person in my life who loved perfume and introduced me to some if the great fragrances. I’m sure she is smiling every time I spray and dab. I hope you and your neice have many sniffing adventures to share.
Have fun!
House to be divided: Parfum de Nicolai
Right wrist: Sacrebleu
Left wrist: New York
What they smell like in the same square foot: YSL Kouros Lite (all the thrills at half the skank)
Mmmm that sounds wonderful!
Those two are my favourites from Nicolai, but I’d never have thought of wearing them together. Good choice! I’ll give this a try too, thanks for the inspiration. I nearly went for New York + Weekend myself, until a last-minute change of mind.
House divided
Left arm – Lalique Encre Noire
Right arm – Lalique Hommage a l’Homme
Hommage a l’Homme wins!
Plus a spritz of John Varvatos Dark Rebel on my left hand
Barbados was the referee!????
That was supposed to be “Varvatos”. Barbados is where I want to be. ????
I went classic and vintage today, with Caron.
Tabac Blond on the left arm, Or et Noir on my right.
I smell insanely beautiful, albeit seasonally inappropriate.
It’s a shame how they’ve destroyed these classic fragrances, and I”m so glad I splurged years ago, even though I really couldn’t afford it.
Oh jealous of your foresight! If I could go back in time a ways, picking up a selection of the Caron perfumes in their glory days is one of the things I would definitely do!
The house divided: Atelier Cologne. My SOTDs are Rose Anonyme and Orange Sanguine. They have been alternating between which one is dominant. I think that the Rose Anonyme will outlast the Orange Sanguine, though.
Very nice!
Like Katrina, I thought about doing ELdO for today’s challenge but could not come up with a combination that didn’t seem completely bonkers. So I took inspiration from Criesandwhispers and went with A La Nuit on the right and Fille de Berlin on the left. Fille de Berlin is definitely winning the sillage contest.
This project made me realize that I habitually bump my wrists together after application. Stopped myself just in time!
Two favorites of mine. You smell great!
Diors of our Lives: A House Divided. Episode 5.
The story so far: Fève Délicieuse, haunted by learning she was closely related to Vintage Homme, has abandoned him and turned her back on the position she inherited from previous partner Granville and which his sister Eau Noire had originally stolen from Dune Dior. (That’s clear, right?). Now read on.
Vintage Homme, alone and desolate, has a terrible secret. Up front, he is all manly Iris and herbs. But in the privacy of the dry down, he flutters about in the base notes of his dear departed Fève. Looking for a partner to back him up, his only choice is the disgraced Dune Dior. But sadly, Dune is no better suited to the support role than he was to the lead. Exhausted by the strain, and facing a security investigation (at CDG airport screening), the luckless Vintage Homme blow his last drops out in the airport concourse and dies (rather soon, I’m afraid)..
And thus fell the House of Dior, for a house divided against itself cannot stand. The End.
😀
I am now waiting for the sequel!
Bravo!
😀
But, surely it will rise again? 🙂
Ha! Did no one survive? I thought Granville might be the Phoenix rising from the ashes?
All just 2ml decants so once they’re gone there’s no coming back. Eau Noire is going on the longlist, might get a larger decant. :^)
*applause*
Oh, that’s a bit sad. Top marks for making me feel sorry for a perfume.
Encore!
I really enjoyed my Uncle Serge duo today- one spritz of Fille en Aiguilles at my throat and two of Chergui at wrists and on my shirt. They played very well together.
Sounds lovely!
Oh, I’ll have to try this – sounds wonderful!
So good!
Wow, love this combo!
Eau de Cologne and 1932…both of of which are new to me…
1932 is lovely. I am trying to pick out notes but it is well blended.
I read on a fragrance board that w/ the Chanel changes later this year the Eau de Cologne might be discontinued according to an SA.
Very happy it is Friday!!!
No! Love eau de cologne
It was my honeymoon scent
Just bought an older bottle of No. 5 edc I found at an antique store. Not sure of the vintage (pre-1981 is all I can figure out), but it smells LOVELY! Every formulation I’ve tried of this one so far has been wonderful–seems a shame to discontinue any of them. Hope the SA is mistaken.
Pretty sure She-ra’s referring to the Exclusif called Eau de Cologne (seems like Chanel has a habit of threatening to discontinue some of the Exclusifs–last time it was La Pausa).
The edc is my favorite iteration of no 5, don’t know exactly when they stopped producing it. The drydown is heaven!
Oh, what a wonderful set!
I asked the SA what Eau de Cologne would be renamed because Eau de Cologne Eau de Parfum sounds … stupid? I got a blank stare.
Haha! I am familiar with that blank stare.
I was talking about Lucien Lelong Sirroco last week, how it was was almost like Shalimar except for a delicious gingerbread heart and a dusting of oakmoss. Then I mused that it would probably be like layering Shalimar and Mitsouko. So today I did the unthinkable….
Modern Shalimar parfum on my arms, Mitsouko EdP from the 00’s on my chest. Hear me roar.
Roar away! That sounds awesome. I’m inspired to try that myself, although I’ll have to use Habit Rouge instead of Shalimar…
Glory to the brave! 🙂
Writing from San Francisco, and I didn’t pack two scents from the same house in my little carry-on friendly baggie. But I may be able to do the challenge later as I just discovered that the friend whose couch I’m crashing on lives all of two blocks from Tigerlily Perfumery – so excited to check it out!
San Francisco has been beautiful, and the food amazing. I highly recommend getting the Rebel Within (an asiago muffin with a soft-boiled egg baked inside of it) at a place called Craftsman and Wolves on Valencia Street and if you can handle your spice, Mission Chinese is *glorious* (seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever had.)
Hope everyone is well!
Friends, food, and ‘fumes. What more could one ask for? Enjoy your trip!
Yum! Beaverton Bakery here does a version of the Rebel Within- amazing stuff.
Sounds wonderful. How fortuitous to be located so close to Tigerlily. My son and daughter-in-law are doing your trip in the opposite direction and will love the food advice.
Have a wonderful time! Look forward to hearing about your adventures.
Oh Mission Chinese!
San Francisco really is a good eating town! I recommend, if you make it up to North beach, stopping in at Tomasso’s Italian restaurant. I had amazing pasta with clams, and Mr. Spicebomb had meatball pizza. Both delicious!
Mission Chinese is so great! there’s one in NY now too!
Are you close to Tartine? Worth a visit. I used to haunt Cafe Puccini in North Beach.
Don’t you love strategically located friends? I stayed with my friend in LA who lives 2 blocks from Scentbar. Your trip sounds like it’s off to a good start. There’s also great sushi to be had in Cali. Hope you get some in.
My House Divided for today’s project is Pacifica. I’ve done a symmetrical split and am wearing Sandalwood on my wrists and Persian Rose on the crooks of my elbows. They seem to be cooperating nicely.
Hang in there, World.
That seems like a good pairing.
It worked well, imho. I’ll try actually layering them in the future.
Persian Rose is a nice one.
Definitely one of my Pacifica faves. The reed diffuser is great, too.
Nasomatto Black Afgano on the left and Hindu Grass on the right. In 90+F heat. Smell me! It feels like I’m wearing the equivalent of an air horn. Good thing I’m off work today. 😉
Love Hindu Grass.
Agreed! I tend to love green fragrances, and Hindu Grass certainly qualifies. I will give it a solo wearing mañana. Black Afgano rather out shouted it. Both are interesting, but HG is more me…
Hi guys! Am back!
1) Went to a talk by Alain de Botton last night as a way to get back into life. 20 years ago(!!!!) I went to a talk with de Botton when I was a teenager, and he had a head full of fine fairy like brown hair and a sharp wit. Now, the hair is mostly gone, but the wit is sharper, keener, more sensitive.
2) Have on a drop of Bois des Iles and Coromandel. Both are wonderful, with Bois being warmer and sweeter than Coromandel elegant crispness. But you can totally tell they are from the same family. I think Coromandel has more staying power.
I really enjoyed The Art of Travel and you smell great!
Oh, thank you! And I really do smell great- I have Haajuursuri to thank for that!
And de Botton is a wonderful and thoughtful author. Status Anxiety and Architecture of Happiness are my very favorites, but looks like I have to re-read art of travel as well! 🙂
The book he wrote about his week in Heathrow airport is great, too.
Hello Ede 97005! De Botton just has a new novel out, hasn’t he? I think I’ve read most of his books without meaning to as they are clever and comfortable at the same time, if that makes sense. Sarah Bakewell’s How to Live: Essays on Montaigne is another philosophy book i really enjoyed.
The new novel is called The Course of Love, which de Botton signed last night, but lecture was about relationships, the modern idea of love, and how romanticism can in some ways kill loving relationships. it was a brilliant hour. In person he is very comfortable and clever, so his voice really does carry through!
How fantastic. He could probably write a good book about perfume.
Wow, you are brave to pair Coromandel and BdI! I may try that in the future as in when it is not summer!
I didn’t have the energy to think about pairing fragrances. Today, I’m just wearing Dzing! Which is always great.
Oh, who cares as long as you smell great!? Besides, Dzing! is almost like a few separate fragrances in one, anyway, right? ????
You’re right! It’s my “default” perfume because it’s so interesting.
A house divided and a plague on both the houses!
I’m in Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling on the left and Trayee on the right. The theme is old vs new I suppose, or tradition vs modernity.
Perfume was one of the few things to lift my spirits this morning.
Beautiful!
Hope the day improved. 🙂
SOTD = Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille to the right and Oud Wood to the left
Lots of woodsy goodness!
Wanted to go cherry picking today, but looks like it will be raining so plans got nixed. Will try again on Sunday, and hopefully make a picnic out of it with some friends. 🙂 When one door closes, right?
Considering the dip in the pound I will undoubtedly be doing some online perfume shopping. I’m eyeing Chanel and Hermes. Any other recommendations?
At what sites are you planning to shop, if I may ask?
I’m dividing myself between two Comme des Garçons fragrances – Serpentine is on my left wrist, and Odeur 53 is on my right wrist. I smell amazing, and also like I am about to indulge in something naughty with a sexy friend while hanging out in a public park.
Ooo lala!
That’s a very cool combination.
Excellent!
I am wearing two opposites today, Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur and Lipstick Rose, great combo.
Neither suit me, but they do seem like they’d go together very nicely. You smell great I am sure!
Sniff off! Actually, maybe not, as that’s what I call an arm-by-arm comparison of two similar perfumes, e.g. a battle of the roses, etc. Today, though, it’s ELO’s Rien vs Vierges et Toreros.
I have to admit defeat with the latter: I have worn it a few times, but have finally admitted that I do not want to smell like machine oil. It’s now been taken off the top of my dresser and put in the purgatory of the living room trade-away shelf. Rien, after its usually shouty first hour, is now being commanding but ladylike.
I will be wearing my le labo vetiver and bergamot samples for a long day of travelling to the sure-to-be swampier midwest, but I haven’t gotten past the furiously cleaning and packing phase just yet.
I’m only taking a few samples with me, but there will be swap packages waiting when I get there (and my swap packages are already safely tucked into my luggage 😉 ).
Going to the US, you only get the medium duty free… The good one is for overseas flights????
In any case, I smelled guerlain vetiver and whichever narciso is in the maroon bottle…
Is there something to see at my Denver layover?????
I don’t remember much in the way of perfume sniffing the last time I went to/thru DIA, sorry.
I was just in the Denver airport. Not much.
You guys are correct????
You have no idea on how late I woke up today. For the past few days, I’ve had trouble falling asleep and don’t end up falling asleep until 2 in the morning. Since it is a day off, I ended up waking up at noon and I still haven’t gotten in the shower yet. But I think I will wear Sarrasins after my shower then when that wears off I will wear De Profundis or Iris Silver Mist.
So funny. I have has exaxtly the same trouble sleeping this week and out until noon today.
I know it’s been pretty hot in Cleveland and even with my overhead fan and window fan going, it’s not easy to sleep. But I think that because there is all sorts of drama going on at work, makes it even worse.
You’re not alone, Dawn. I was up until 2:30ish last night, woke up around 8 and managed to get back to sleep for another hour. Sorry about your work drama; I’m glad those days are over for me.
Here’s to a good night’s sleep tonight!
I finally had a decent night’s sleep last night after nearly a week of well-below-my-minimum. Sorry if I passed it along–hope it doesn’t stick around.
Hello everyone,
Posting for the first time today after reading this blog for the past couple of years. Thanks to all of you I have become to appreciate the art of perfumery greatly. I hope to keep learning as days pass.
Joining today’s project, I am wearing Chanel 19 EDT on one arm and Cristalle on the other. Smelling amazing and feeling very elegant!
Hello! You smell great!
Welcome! Jumping right into the action with two amazing perfumes 🙂
Hello! You smell very classy today!
A great combination! Rue Cambon and Cristalle work perfectly as well. (And welcome.)
Welcome! 🙂
Fine combination!
Hello! You smell sophisticated!
Welcome! Perfect choices!
Very sophisticated! No. 19 is still too much for me, and I have yet to come across Cristalle, so you are clearly a very advanced newbie.
“(ironically, sorry, and our usual prohibition on political discussion stands)” 😀 Robin, you crack me up.
My vintage Estee Super Cologne came in the mail yesterday, thereby deciding my Friday project. I’ve put that down my shirt and a little bit of Bronze Goddess on my wrists. I approve! Also, I LOVE the Estee – it feels both upbeat and comfortable, a great daywear perfume.
And we need some humor.
Nice picks!
SOTM was beach sand and salt water with a dash of Mangrove Root!
Now headed for a shower and I’m feeling the call of EL Bronze Goddess in the dry body oil spray, which is a format I live in summer.
Happy Friday to all and if you’re on vacation YAY YOU!!
I keep forgetting today is Friday, and every time I get reminded it’s like a cold towel on my head it’s such a relief.
You’ve had a rich day, it seems!
I’m in a combo that I think I read about at NST – Philosykos and Tam Dao. I love it!
What else layers well with Tam Dao? I don’t use my bottle nearly enough…
I like that combo too. And try Tam Dao with sheer florals!
Le Labo Rose 31 and The Noir 29
Nice.
Great choice. I almost did this.
Splitting headache this morning mostly but not entirely gone now, so my house divided might be a mistake, but in honor or Hiram Green’s new perfume I’m wearing Voyage and Shangra La. The former is winning the sillage battle, so the distinctiveness of the latter is missing. I might take a shower and move on to something lighter later today.
Sorry to hear about your head ache. Ugh.
Sorry about the headache, but both sides of you smell amazing.
Finally Fridyay! And for those looking for a gift-receiving occasion, tomorrow is Half-Christmas*!
Puredistance, a house divided.
SOTD = Black
SOTD = White
OMG, I just realized I stayed on theme with colors as well. Extra points!
Voluptuous White clobbered Peppery Black from the get-go. I used 1 spritz of each. I know Puredistance is much maligned for its cost and while I agree it’s expensive, don’t let that stop you from trying it. If you end up liking / loving it, I’m sure you’ll find a way to obtain more (***see gift-receiving occasion above***).
just smelled Opardu last weekend and thought it was quite nice. I *think* I may have a sample of Black and/or White. I will check!
’twas merely wishful thinking. no samples.
Opardu *is* very nice.
Love love love Opardu!
Oh! Now I want a black and white cookie. You smell great.
Hurrah for half-Christmas. I placed my first-ever order with Luckyscent this week. Now I feel even better about indulging a bit.
Indulge away and congrats on your first Luckyscent order. Looking forward to your confessions to Donatella 😉
Hajusuuri, I saw your comment about Le Gallion Iris – that is so generous of you! Let me know if I can send you anything.
We need to find you an iris you can smell!
This Half-Christmas business is dangerous. We already do half-birthdays in my family, but I think you might have created a monster here! ????
It’s not dangerous if you manage to always be on the receiving end 🙂
SOTD= Bottega Veneta, and Bottega Veneta Knot…they actually work well together. I am at work, so only dabs on each arm. Neither has huge sillage, but I am enjoying them!
I bet they do. I’m going to find my sample of knot and give that a try.
I might have to give that a try.
Interesting!
I chose Bruno Acampora Sballo and Musc for today’s challenge. Just a small dab of the oil on each wrist. It is warm today and I didn’t want to overwhelm anyone in my vicinity.
the musc is so nice, I haven’t smlled Sballo but I don’t doubt you smell wonderful!
I have friends on each side of the British issue so I am wearing Swiss Andy Tauer’s Le Maroc pour Elle on the left and Incense Rose on the right. They work well together. Willow the rescue dog had to be crated this morning because I needed to go out. I came home to find she had pulled one wall of the crate down with her teeth and escaped, tried to climb the bookcase, and trapped herself in the closet. It has not been a restful day.
I don’t know which is harder in terms of organisational skills: leaving a new dog home alone or trying to shower with a new baby in the house. Both seem to require the skill of being in two places at once.
Oy.
Ooof.
Sounds like Willow the Wonderdog to me. 🙂 Get her a cape and a flashlight.
Not big choices here, but I looked at the mini bottles and put EL Private Collection oil on one wrist and White Linen EdP on the other.
I’m finding a base similarity to these two. But I prefer the Private Collection…
That sounds like a very pretty combo for summer.
Kyoto and Wonderwood . Very nice.
I’m thinking of blind buying Atelier cologne vanille insensee cologne absolue as my replacement vanilla ( after draining ….finally…Un Bois Vanille ) as I can get it in NZ so reasonably cheap. I read Kevin’s review but was wondering how others experience the ‘vanilla’ as I’m not sure if it is the dominant note. Thanks for the other suggestions of Carthusia and Tom Ford.
It is actually equally vanilla and amber. I am not particularly an amber lover, but it is quite an interesting perfume. Atelier cologne manages to have this quality with a number of their perfumes, when I want to say: “Well, I am actually not a …. lover, but here it does smell interesting in this combination”.
I am not an amber lover either. But maybe I’m not really a vanilla lover either….argh too many choices.
This is a very late reply but Kanuka, if you’re there and if you’re familiar with Avon Soft Musk circa early 90s, this is what I finally recognized as what Vanille Insensee reminded me of….
Thanks for your message and that is very interesting. I have a feeling my vanilla craving has passed. I am horribly fickle/ impulsive. Have areally great weekend! Thank you!
Yes, by the way, you smell good!
Vanille Insensee has an airy lift that balances the vanilla. It is not at all a vanilla cake smell. I think of it as “deliciously inedible.” I enjoy it every time I wear it.
For what it’s worth, I have a decant of Un Bois Vanille, and I just can’t wrap my head around it. I haven’t tried enough fragrance from Serge Lutens to figure out why it doesn’t work for my nose. I keep trying though.
I have that problem with Daim Blond. It’s like when I’ve bought the perfect pair of shoes but a half size too small cause they were on sale…and i keep trying to convince myself that they fit.
It (UBV) seems overly “thick” to me, like a lotion that moisturizes just fine, but has an unpleasant texture.
It’s not cheap, but have you smelled Tihota?
It sounds wonderful. Just read about it.
Please, before you pull the trigger on any vanilla at least get a sample of this. Even if it ends up not being to your taste. I’m very passionate about this, as you can tell. ????
Vanille Insensee smells like sweet cardboard to me. Quite pleasant, actually, but like the first dozen or so of the Atelier Colognes, it lasts less than an hour on me. (Musk anosmia, most likely.) I’m partial to Yves Rocher Vanille Noire, which is not sweet/gourmand at all in my opinion. It’s not very long-lived either, but it’s very affordable. L’Artisan Vanille Absolument is another nice one if you like a woody vanilla, and Caron pour Un Homme is vanilla/lavender, and ironically the scent that made me realize that lavender was not just for men.
ThT is very helpful. Thank you.
Yay, Friday! No battles, fragrance or otherwise, for me today. Simply taking time to breathe deep and smell the flowers.
House = L’artisan Parfumeur
Left SotD = Oeillet Sauvage
Right SotD = La Chasse aux Papillons
I feel very French floral. 😀
Sounds like a great floral combo!
Chanel Allure, and Allure alone 🙂
You all smell fabulous.
I keep meaning to try that, and keep forgetting when I’m at the mall. Going to put it on my list right now.
I briefly considered a couple of possible combos from my collection (AG Ninfeo Mio and Songes, Parfum d’Empire Wazamba and Ambre Russe) and realized just how badly this project could go!
I have Andy Tauer’s L’air du desert Marocain on one arm and his Lys du Desert on the other. Plenty of “Tauerade” in both, LADDM seems denser and drier and LDD more airy (and of course, floral).
There’s nothing like a pool afternoon with the grandkids to put life – and the world – in perspective.
A lover of all things ‘pickle,’ granddaughter swoons with delight at the pickle potato chips I brought along as part of lunch.
She: Whoever created this should win the Nobel Prize!
Me: For which category? Chemistry?
She (triumphantly): For peace! Make pickles, not war!
Dinner will be lemonade and pizza and ice cream under the stars at our Friday night summer symphony concert in our nearby park.
For this picture perfect summer day to remember, I’m wearing EL Pure White Linen and Pure White Linen Pink Coral.
Your granddaughter is absolutely correct! 🙂
Smart girl. And adorable ????
A great big thumbs-up to your entire post! ????
What a champion.
What a perfect day! Hope it was as wonderful as it sounds.
I’m in Serge Lutens Santal de Mysore on one side and Santal Blanc on the other.
I went with L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore on my torso, and Tea for Two on my limbs. For a moment, I got a lovely blast of apple pie, and then it settled into something. Not quite so magical, but very pleasant. I’m relieved it stayed below 90 today, because TdB is mostly cotton candy and leather on me.
Tea for Two will also be my Olivia Giacobetti scent for next Friday, when I will be leaving for vacation. My parents decided they wanted a family road trip instead of a party for their 50th anniversary, so we (me, my parents, my sister, my nephews, and the youngest nephew’s father) are going to Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and to visit cousins in Wyoming and Iowa. I am looking forward to it and dreading it in roughly equal proportions. Will be back to read everyone else’s picks later. Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
That sounds like fun! When we were younger, my hub’s entire family (six siblings and children plus grandparents) used to rent condos together in VT. Sometimes we’d go in different directions during the day, but we’d all come together at night for a wonderful meal. We had a great time and I hope you do to. I have wonderful memories of those vacations with my in-laws.
That sounds like a fun idea–enjoy the trip!
Like Coumarin and Galbanumgal, I’m wearing Guerlain: Vol de Nuit and Jicky.
That sounds good!
Did they fight? I’m having trouble wrapping my head around that combination.
From a stay in a Crown Plaza, products from Temple Spa that have disappointingly similar scents. I’m wearing Quietude “calming mist” (they clearly saw me coming) and AAAHHH! balm for feet and limbs. Package also included REPOSE “resting cream”, a pre-bedtime moisturizer. Listed EOs are lavender, artemisia, celery seed, lemongrass, clove, citruses, rosemary, thyme, patchouli and vetiver. It certainly is calming. I may need to seek that calming mist out.
Haven’t read comments yet, but Sweetwater, how is your house hunt/offer going? We have done most inspections, been approved for mortgage, and are still negotiating repairs. Trying to stay open to the possibility of walking away. I don’t care if she is a single mother, if she’s making $14,000 for living in a house for 3 years, she needs to fix a few things.
Unrelated to today’s theme, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the website PerfumeSamplesAndDecants.com? They offer decants of a couple perfumes I’ve wanted to try in spray form that I have been unable to find through the normal/ more popular sites.
Are they legit? Worth trying out?
Off-topic – SHOES!
Aargh, I can’t believe how long the checkout line is at DSW! It seems like the entire world is here. I saw two really ugly pairs of shoes on strangers this afternoon which prompted me to stop by DSW to see what’s “in” at a discount:
Pair 1 – Platform flip flops with Charlie Chaplin moustache fringes all over the v-straps
Pair 2 – Open-toed sandals with suede strips (like someone cut off part of Pocahontas’ leather jacket and slapped it on a pair of shoes)
So what did I buy? A pair of Croc flats with a band of patent leather-like plastic around the toes part. I will wear these on my cruise for formal nights or whenever I am wearing a dress. I’ll look for a link when I get home and post it. Heh, talk about being defiant!
The style is Crocs Sienna Flats
http://www.dsw.com/shoe/crocs+sienna+flat?prodId=365327
Very cute. I would never have guessed that they were crocs. They’ve sure come a long way from the original style.
I was surprised as well…and they’re lighter than the shoebox! I also tried on Life Strides which are cushiony; the Crocs felt springier.
I wanted a pair of those for my upcoming vacation, as I can’t quite bring myself to wear sneakers with skirts, and know 12 days of pants would drive me nuts. (Skirts are the best, right, my fellow wide-hipped women?) They were too narrow for my terrible feet, though, and I had to settle for a pair of Crocs Alice flats. Not nearly as cute, but still much less goofy-looking than the regular old Crocs I wear whenever I’m not in public.
And I’ve been seeing handbags with that thick leather fringe. It always looks like something meant for a Sixties-themed costume party to me.
Pants=trousers, for our overseas friends. I never go commando in either sense of the phrase.
I just looked up the Crocs Alice – they’re cute Mary Janes! Enjoy your road trip.
OMG, Hajusuuri! When you first described the crocs I thought you had gone mad! I came back to look at the picture you promised and they are adorable.
They sound fab!
Thanks for the warm welcome! Long day at work and ready for a busy weekend with some family members coming over. After a cozy bath, ready to relax with a good book and some Apres l’Ondee.
You smell lovely. I really like it for bedtime too, and welcome!
I missed the Friday plan so I did it Friday night: Gucci Envy on one wrist and Gucci Rush on the other. I don’t think I was awake for long enough to make a comparison, but upon waking I find the Envy side ladylike and calm and the Rush side still dancing at the disco.
Have fun on vacation, Robin – a gorgeous weekend.
