Happy Grammar Day! And1 happy Friday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from Estée Lauder or Aramis, if you have one.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in my all-time favorite Estée Lauder fragrance (although I suspect that Estée Lauder herself would not approve), Bronze Goddess.
Reminder: 3/11 will be Forgotten Friday...dig around in the back of the cabinet, find something, be it a bottle or decant or sample, that you'd forgotten you owned or forgotten to wear. (suggested by ajda)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
1. Never begin a sentence with a conjunction!
Lauder’s White Linen, of which I think she would approve. I don’t own Bronze Goddess, but I do own Azuree Soleil which I really like.
White Linen was yesterday for me, and it’s a stunner!
I used to wear WL back in the day. I wonder how it smells now.
I’m sure she would approve!
I like Azuree Soleil, too, when the weather is a bit warmer.
I’m in White Linen, too, but I’m not sure I’m as enthusiastic about it as most people! What has it got that some high-quality dryer sheets don’t? (I’m going to get slaughtered for that, aren’t I? A TS 5, no less. While I’m getting beaten up, let me add that I truly loathe Shalimar, Mitsouko, and Chanel No. 5.)
I’ll take my licks with you. I can’t think of a single Lauder that I would need a decant of and have never liked WL much at all. I also strongly dislike Shalimar (but I love Mitsy and No. 5). As far as I know, we aren’t actually required to adore every perfume classic as long as we can pretend to appreciate their existence 😉
“Pretend” being, perhaps, the operative word!
well, if it helps for you to feel safety in numbers, while I love love EL WL, I would never (ever) wear Shalimar, Mitsy or No. 5.
I’m in the “no” camp, also. My small bottle of vintage White Linen will appear in the upcoming swap.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for that little lovely thing. 😉
I began the day in White Linen (an older bottle, not sure what year) and this conversation made me crave Shalimar, so that’s what I’m wearing now. It’s a better match for the chilly-grey-with-occasional-rain yucky day.
I still think I might come around to Mitsouko eventually, but I’m with you on the rest of them.
I wonder if you would like the vintage WL? All current versions of the EL classics just don’t hold a candle to the originals.
*Cries* Noooo! White Linen is the best aldehydic of all time, IMO. I can’t speak for the current version, but for decades what made it so great is that it’s not nearly as sweet as other aldehyde bombs (like Chanel No. 5 or 22 or Guerlain Vega).
This is my SOTD too, by the way; a little of the vintage parfum.
you have vintage WL parfum. ((faints to floor))
that must be sublime. is it quite different from edt?
You know, I don’t actually find them wildly different! I mean, the vintageness is great but it’s not crazy different from the lighter concentration.
Love White Linen too, Elisa. I fell for it when it first came out and used it all up. I haven’t ever tried Pure White Linen, assuming it would not be good. Since then I’ve read that it has a lily of the valley note, so I’ll have to give it a check.
While I don’t think it’s the best aldehydic of all time, I do think it’s a brilliant scent. Deceptively simple.
I love aldehydes, but have never, never liked White Linen – it always seems sour to me, like laundry left in the washer long enough to get mildewed. Ugh.
So, yesterday I participated in EL week by wearing White Linen. It was beautiful and I enjoyed wearing it all day.
Today, I was hankering to wear something non-EL, so I’m sportin’ Amouage Beloved. And…of course…beginning to consider a full bottle of this. I got a 10 mL split and I’m not sure I can manage once it’s gone. Sadly, I purchased a full bottle of Amouage Fate about 4-5 months ago, thinking I adored it. I started with a 10 mL split of Fate and loved every single wearing of it. But once I got a bottle it’s just a little different and I don’t quite love it. Fate is now “like” not “love” for me. Has Fate already been reformulated perhaps? I’m really disappointed as this was (quite!) a spendy purchase, and to no longer love it (and now wishing I had Beloved instead…(((big dramatic sigh)))
Maybe not wear it for a while and then go back to it?
I will try that. It’s been about 2 weeks since I’ve worn Fate. But the last time I wore it, the feeling it gave me seemed so ‘serious,’ almost like what I’ve read other people describe as a “sad trombone” scent.
When I got my bottle of Gold, it smelled slightly different from my sample, and I remember feeling slightly anxious, but after a while I loved my bottle just as much. I think that there may always be slight variations from batch to batch.
Wow – so sorry to hear that. Definitely take some time away from it, because that is decidedly not a sad trombone scent. If it does stay that way for you, I bet you can find many fumies who would pay to take it off your hands.
I know this is in the middle a big discussion about Fate/Beloved and decants/splits vs once you receive the bottle but ….thought I’d ask a general question here:
When you decide you want to off-load a full bottle, one you’ve barely used, 90% or more full, where you do that? Do you have luck on basenotes or ebay or Fragrantica or another site? Just curious. I’m finding myself with several nice full bottles, and want to sell them, but also want to do it somewhere I can trust but also I kinda go crazy with ebay and all their fees and stuff.
Thanks for any recs
I’m still too new at this to give you an answer other than the swap meets that take place here. I’ve gotten great stuff that way.
Anyone else?
I used to sell stuff on eBay but really don’t care to do it anymore on a regular basis. I think the last item I sold was a mini of Marni a year or two ago. I have a hard time letting go of bottles but I am very happy if I can rehome it to an NST commenter who happens to like something I don’t.
Lyric varies a lot on me, to the extent that while I’d definitely get another sample, or ideally a decant, I don’t hanker for a bottle the way I did after the very first wearing. Maybe it’s the weather, or hormones, or what you had for breakfast? I’d definitely try it again, under different conditions.
You smell great, I love Beloved but don’t really know Fate so can’t comment usefully beyond that – sorry.
I had the same relationship with Fate. The bottle went to a lovely home to one of our NST’ers
Really? Did you try a good sized split first, think you loved it, then bought a bottle and it was just okay? That is SO interesting!
Yes, sad to admit it
Well, I agree you should give it a little more time, wear it again when your mood/the weather/the season is different and see how it feels, then make a decision. I absolutely love it and it would be a shame to let it go unless you’re sure you don’t want to wear it.
I often find variations between the samples and bottles too. My theory is that the samples are probably created enmasse and may mello a bit before you actually use them. So I let my full bottles age for a while and went back to them. They are perfect now.
My thinking was along these lines as well. I don’t know if it’s factual, but it seems to me there is window of time for ingredients to really meld and reach peak performance, and the window closes when ingredients start to break down, or “turn” as a few NSTer’s have commented.
And I would wonder if it’s a difference in application? I’ve definitely noticed differences between dabbing and spraying. And some spray bottles have airy mists and others have streams. It all seems to change how I notice the fragrance development. Ubar was a clear example of this effect on me–it has much less sparkly lemon when dabbed than sprayed and it develops more slowly than sprayed.
Beloved is wonderful stuff! I’d love a bottle too. I am nursing my decant as long as possible!
Don’t mean to enable, but I found my bottle at a discounter site. (Might be the only way to find it now???) Got it at a great price, under $200 from fragrancenet, I think.
Beloved is available at discount?? Uh oh. My bank account is in deep trouble… Is your Beloved from FragNet 100% perfect the way you originally smelled it? I am cautious about gray market Amouage.
I’m not entirely sure that Fragrancenet is grey market so much as it is “off-price,” Everything I have ever purchased from that site (including several bottles of Lutens stuff and some Amouage) has been the real thing, and the same goes for BeautyEncounter if I recall correctly. My bottle of Epic is from Fragrancenet and it’s exactly what I’d smelled at Bergdorfs and Barneys. Not affiliated of course, but I have found them to be reliable with good customer service. Others with different experiences should absolutely speak up though.
Sorry if I’ve enabled 🙂
I should clarify, because I don’t think Barneys carries Amouage. I smelled the Lutens at Barneys.
Actually, I should clarify, because I don’t think Barneys carries Amouage. I smelled the Lutens at Barneys.
Whoops – sorry to double post!
My bottle of Beloved was an “extra large sample,” so I didn’t have anything to compare it to. However, I agree with Ms. Ihadanidea in that I’ve never had any reason for suspicion or concern about my purchases there. It smells lovely!
Just checked, bottles currently can be found for $185 on fragrancenet.
(Ok. Now I DO intend to enable! 😉 )
I order Amouage from Fragrancenet and have never had a problem.
I have three FBs (Gold, Jub 25 and Beloved) and two travel sets (Epic and Lyric) of Amouage perfumes that I purchased from fragrance net and they all smell great (and authentic).
Take it with a grain of salt, but FragranceNet is a Google trusted store which makes me inclined to think their bottles are authentic.
I haven’t tried Beloved or Fate but I have purchased bottles that weren’t quite the same as my samples. I think the slight breakdown from the air in the bottle may be the difference. I know that my Amouage decants have evaporated quite a bit and it has made them stronger and richer. Even when I added alcohol to thin them back down they were deeper than my full bottles.
What I’ve done in the past with other perfumes is decant enough to get some air in the bottle and let the bottle sit while I use my decant. It’s what I did with my newest Aromatics Elixir and it worked well.
interesting. thanks.
Malle’s Carnal Flower
I plan on applying some this afternoon so soon to be twin!
Yum!
I will use my Carnal Flower shower gel to get another partial credit!
Estée Lauder Private Collection, another old-school Lauder scent.
It’s intensely green!
very pretty, I love that one. Realizing I love a lot of EL scents
I might need to get some of this. It really is a great green scent.
Twins 🙂
Triplets!
I don’t like to wear it, but I appreciate it’s beauty.
You smell gorgeous! Bronze Goddess is my favourite as well, but I did not feel like one today…
As a continuation of yesterday’s Perfumista Milestones theme, I’m wearing Tom Ford Fleur de Chine. As it happens, it’s both my first split and my first back-up (well, half a bottle, but still), as I panicked because of the discontinuation news. Plus there’s the Estee Lauder connection, too.
Many thanks to the lovely SophieC, who made it all happen.
My pleasure – since it was my first time doing a split I am seriously relieved it worked! Of course, you smell super.
This discontinuation business can drive anyone crazy… Fleur de Cine has been on my must-try-list for ages, and I was taking my own sweet time to get to it. Then I read about it being discontinued and of course had to sniff it before it was gone – and lo and behold, now it is on my Wish-I-could-afford-to-buy-it-maybe-we-can-remorgage-the-house?-list….
It is such a beautiful scent, you are so lucky to own it both of you 🙂
I’ve actually never tried this one either, but really want to. I tried Shanghai Lily, but never got around to getting FdC. I can’t believe it’s being discontinued already! It only came out 3 years ago!
Good, while I don’t love Fleur de Chine the way you do, I still think it’s a shame it has been discontinued.
You’ll finish those bottles, I’m sure. And I’ve yet to do a perfume split.
Grammar Day makes me nervous. Could have worn Bronze Goddess (my only Lauder), but hoping I get partial credit for by Killian’s Rose Oud. I can wear it with abandon now that I have a bottle. Today I’m looking forward to rest (after 5 exhausting days at work) and delivery (my bottle of Lonesome Rider).
Enjoy your rest, and hope your LR gets there!
Another BK Rose Oud fan here.
Has anyone tried Calice Becker’s latest BK, Moonlight in Heaven?
Missionista would tell you, you haven’t had enough nuns in your life! (Responding to Grammar Day comment 😉 )
As soon as I read “And” and saw the notation, I smiled. 🙂
Oh crumbs. It was you, wasn’t it? Well, the thought has given me much pleasure these months. Just a few days ago I got an invitation to the “mother house” of a nearby convent, having chatted with two nuns (a Sister and the Mother Superior) at a recent gala. I loved them! Passionate about the Pope and justice.
Sorry Missionista–meant SicilianaNC!
I think I’m the only one who uses semi-colons and however correctly.
Punctuation is an under-appreciated art.
I am a grammar Nazi and proud of it. It is also part of my job, so I have no reason to be particularly proud of myself about it. My particular passions are semi-colons, the distinction between restrictive and unrestrictive clauses, and the Oxford comma. It is amazing how many things, even among putatively experienced and reputable copy-editors, have been deemed a matter of preference.
I could go on and on about this topic, but will spare you!
We don’t let people talk politics in the comments, and that includes the Oxford comma 😉
Not participating in EL community project..
Thanks to the discussion yesterday about the house of Divine (looking at you austenfan!) I am in my last few drops of L’Ame Sœur, and trying not to fall in love and want a FB. I am going to give myself some time to explore the other perfumes under this house.
Tea this morning was a FAIL..used up the last of this black tea someone gave me and it was just black tea gone wrong. Switching to Eros by MF. Happy snowy day to some..
Yeah for Divine! Divine, Parfums MDCI and Teo Cabanel are three houses who seem ‘under the radar’ from Perfumista love but they are SUCH high quality houses with amazing perfumes.
I am treasuring my sample and have a sample of the Divine perfume coming my way in a few days.
AH! I have never heard of Teo Cabanel -is there something that stands out that I should try.
Nothing so far from Perfumes MDCI made me swoon just yet.
Teo Cabanale Alahine is among my top 3 of all time. If you like orientals, it’s amazing.
I also enjoy Teo Cabanel Lace Garden, which is a very juicy tuberose-white floral blend. But Lace Garden is something I purchased a bottle of unsniffed. I will happily use this bottle, but do not plan to re-purchase, because I have so many in this ‘genre.’
But Alahine…Alahiiiiiiiine…is crazy good if you’re into orientals
Ditto that. Alahine is top ten, desert island, one and only stuff!
I do love orientals, I will put that on my must try list.
On a side note, one of my friends that came to visit from California brought me a cute little perfume bottle. Its a dabber not a spray. I thinking what beautiful scent I can fill it up with.
I *don’t* love orientals, but I love me some Alahine.
Which MDCI’s have you tried?
I’m in with the troops on Alahine. I’ve just been out of town for a week, and Could Not Wait to get back and spritz myself with it. It’s just exactly as incredibly beautiful as everyone says.
I totally agree! So many lovely scents from these houses.
Good! I’m very glad that you enjoy it so much. I forgot to answer your question yesterday: I probably wear the original Divine the most, and L’Homme de Cœur second. And I adore L’Infante in summer.
I appreciate your opinion. I am jealous of your collection, I am not going to lie. If you lived close to me I would raid your stash!
And you would be most welcome to sniff!
*shops for Divine samples*
Eh..I hope don’t get an enabler pin. The pin should go to austenfan
Pins all around!
I just shopped for some Divine samples as well as teo cabanel
Good grief
EL Pleasures-body lotion sample, only thing I could find in EL. It started out much greener than I thought it would be, but then it is a nice floral scent…2 hours in and I can still smell it, vaguely. It’s nice , but I don’t think I would ever buy this for myself.
“Nice but I don’t think I would ever buy this” is pretty much my take on Pleasures too.
Siblings! I’m in the perfume today.
Vintage Knowing parfum. One of the crown jewels in the Lauder collection, and one of my favourite scents of all time. I have about 2 mL left and I use it sparingly: I don’t know what I’ll do when I run out.
And I say, begin a sentence with a conjunction if you damned well feel like it: any earlier clause is implicit. (And end a sentence with a preposition, too!)
I’ve discovered that I love rose chypres, so I have to get myself a sample of this and Paloma Picasso. They sound glorious.
Oh my god vintage Mon Parfum by Paloma Picasso is INCREDIBLE — simultaneously dirtier and more floral than Knowing. I hope you can get some! (I never tried the parfum but the EDP is spectacular enough as it is.) And while you’re at it you should try to get some Ungaro Diva, too. Man, they used to make great chypres in the eighties!
Already have the bottle of Diva. 🙂 Will report back on the rest when I’m able to get them.
Those are two other on my all time fav list 😉
I love both Knowing and PP. So so good. (Wore Knowing yesterday)
I pretty much have my own grammar (and punctuation) rules. I do follow them, they’re just not the standard rules 🙂
🙂 Agreed! The purpose of language is communication, if people can understand you then it’s fine!
*twitch* You made that a run-on sentence on purpose, didn’t you?
😉
You smell fantastic. Knowing is gorgeous! Totally unisex too. So many classic women’s frags are just as good for a man! You can’t go wrong with a chypre.
I agree 100% with all you said about vintage Knowing! Truly gorgeous. And one of my all time favs. I have never been willing to take chances with vintage purchases on the evil bay, but I’m SO tempted now!
I just recently bought a partial bottle of vintage Knowing on eBay. I’d done it once before and gotten a turned bottle, but this one smells fab. On the plus side they are generally cheap.
Daak rose fragrances like this one must be great on a man.
Pyramus, I agree about prepositions. Winston Churchill is reputed to have said to a young aide who correcting one of his speeches, “Young man, this is the kind of interference up with which I will not put.”
Too funny, Lindaloo!
I imagine you smell extra-fantastic in the vintage version! I’m wearing Knowing (current version) for the first time today, and I’m swooning.
Have to be ready for a fancypants meeting today, and felt like my one Lauder/Aramis (Calligraphy Rose) didn’t suit, so back in Bottega Veneta. Petunia, you have enriched my life with this one – thank you.
Good luck with the fancypants meeting!
Thank you!
Yay! So glad you are enjoying it!
🙂 🙂
By the way, I did a layering experiment last night that turned out *beautifully* – the Body Shop’s Indian Night Jasmine body butter under Jubilation 25. I was loving life as I fell asleep huffing my wrists. Well worth trying if you have both.
BV is so wonderful – you smell great! One of my go-to favs.
We aren’t exact scent twins, but we may be close 🙂
YES! You are more current with recent niche releases than I am, so I always pay attention to what you like.
Oh wow – am I? If it’s true, it’s probably just luck and living in New York where I can see what’s new at the stores. Thanks for the compliment!
😉 One of these days I’ll join you for a sniffa!
Totally ducked out of this as really wanted to wear the new Floris A rose for…(they insert your name) which my husband bought me. It is incredibly lovely, very deep and present but also oddly comforting and one that I think suits either day or night time wear. Notes include darjeeling and tuberose.
I do plan on some Carnal Flower after a long meeting I have coming up so sort of participating.
Inspired by you all I am actually drinking tea – albeit herbal Pukka Love tea (after the mandatory black coffee this am)…
Oh, that does sound nice!
How floral is Pukka Love tea?
It’s doesn’t feel terribly floral to me – that said the ingredients are primarily rose, lavender, camomile and marigold which sounds rather floral. it just feels very smooth and soothing and perfect for the afternoon. If you like really strong teas it might not appeal but if you are after something gentle it is worth investigating. Sorry my tea description skills clearly need to improve!
Darjeeling and rose? Sigh. That sounds really wonderful!
I am wearing Peche Cardinale by MDCI. I completely forgot about today’s challenge. I only own one EL which is Sensous Nude. Since we’re on the verge of snow, I wasn’t feeling it today anyway. No points for me today ????
Cardinal…
Peche Cardinal is beautiful. Becomes really tuberose-y on me as it wears throughout the day.
Me too.
I’m in a very light application of Private Collection and so far so good (I love it, but got an–unrelated–migraine the last time I wore it and so haven’t been able to really enjoy it in a bit).
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!!
Had to wear my FAVORITE Estee Lauder today…..one of the 1st bottles of perfume that I ever bought for myself: Bronze Goddess. (WOW! I’m finally scent twins with Robin!)
This scent takes me back to summer trips at Jacksonville Beach (where my inlaws live), and Tybee Island. It’s my favorite summer smell: sunscreen and beach shops. The smell of beachside restaurants, where people are sitting around in their swim cover ups, taking a break from the heat. Mmmmmmm. Take that, winter weather!
Hey twin!!!
Triplets! I got 5mls during a Swapmeet. I don’t wear it often, but when I do it really hits the spot!
I may have to splurge on the BG body cream that several of you were raving about yesterday……Mmmmmm!!
That’s what I’m in today! Love it sooo much.
I wore BG last night, to counteract the chilly wet day. It was perfect!
I’ve only been scent twins with Robin once, but I felt extra special :-). I don’t remember which perfume though 🙁
While I have samples of Azuree and Tuberose Gardenia somewhere, they haven’t been unpacked yet, so the closest I can get is Le Labo Santal 33, one of my random purse samples
Tuberose Gardenia is the only EL scent I have… love it, but more in the summer, so I’m on the fence as to whether I’ll wear it today. The other top contender is a sample of Parfum de Therese from a generous NSTer!
Ah, and after reading more comments I’m reminded that Malle is now an EL company. Yay for partial credit!
I fondi a vial in my samples and testing it today
How are you liking it?
I’m a sucker for tuberose, so I’m not so picky! It does what it has to do, but I have enough FB alternatives!
No baby yet?
Pleasures for me today. . It’s also a pleasure that it’s Friday. I’m so ready to chill out tonight.
It was NOT a pleasure to wake up to an inch of snow on my car, but at least the streets were clear. It’s also making my perfume choice feel a bit off. I could’ve worked from home, but there were too many pressing things in the office to take care of today.
Happy Friday all!
Not sure where you live but the my iPhone weather app lied! It was only suppose to snow a bit this morning but now its still coming down. Pretty to watch if your on maternity leave like me-but I was hoping to get out this morning for a brisk walk.
I’m in Montgomery County, PA. I knew we’d wake up to a bit of snow, but I’m honestly surprised by how much accumulated on my car. However, the roads were mostly clear – just a bit wet and slushy in a few spots. It’s been too warm lately for them to be covered. I think the snow will taper off later this morning, but there’s another chance of snow Sunday night too.
I live in Montco too. I was surprised at how much snow I had to clean off my car at 7AM….and had to really search in back of closet for snow boots, which I had put away. I guess I displeased the snow gods by putting them away. I am in Pleasures, too, and it does feel a bit off today….better for Spring, which it is supposed to be, it is March, darn it all.
Exactly! I don’t have snow boots, but I am wearing boots just because this might be the last time I wear them. Hopefully we don’t get much more snow. I’m rather done with it and looking forward to that promising forecast of 70F this coming Wednesday!
Hope you get to enjoy a thoroughly relaxing weekend midear! You have earned it.
Thanks. I think the hubs just made plans for us to hang out with friends of ours who recently had a baby, which is laughable because this is the third couple in our group of friends who have had a baby in the past 3 months! It’ll be nice to hang out with them though and I think they maybe want to see some other faces.
I hope you have a good weekend as well!
Maybe some baby holding will prove therapeutic. Otherwise, nap and be lazy!
It’s Tuberose Gardenia for me today. Lovely stuff, though my favourite EL is Bronze Goddess, have it in all its forms – fragrance, oil and body cream, can’t get enough of the stuff. : )
Tuberose Gardenia for me too!
Whoever that is in your avatar pic is adorable!
Triplets!
Esteé and I met up yesterday via the ever popular Bronze Goddess.
Today is my birthday and I am expecting big things! So I am going to wear a big perfume (Fate Woman) and see what happens!
I am anticipating a big Lotto win, possibly traveling the world via my own private jet, and/or successfully solving all the world’s problems by noon! ????
No, no, no. Sadly, the reality is I’m a working all day, woke up to discover T-Rex had chewed up another pair of glasses (3 pair so far!), and then I threw in a load of laundry!
Exciting times at Chez Deva! I smell good, though!
Happy Friday to all????
Happy Birthday!!! I am a March baby as well…
Fate is ah-mazing! Maybe T-rex can get you a new pair of glasses for your birthday 😉 He can trade some of his puppy biscuits.
Happy birthday, Deva!
Happy Birthday! You smell wonderful 🙂
Happy Birthday Deva! Have you picked out a “Scent-abration” fragrance to buy yourself? Have an awesome day! 🙂
Happy birthday! How fun to have your birthday fall on a Friday — a whole weekend of celebrating !!
Happy birthday, Deva! I don’t know what species T-Rex is, but he sounds like a cutie 🙂
Happy Birthday!
SOTD -EL Cinnabar, in the original packaging
Happy Birthday! Sounds like you’ll have a fun adventure with T-Rex today! You smell wonderful 🙂
Happy birthday, Deva! I hope your birthday weekend delights all your senses and especially your sense of smell, of course. ????
Happy birthday! Hope you have a wonderful day and get a chance to take the T-Rex terror for a stroll.
Happy birthday! It’s a good thing T-Rex is so cute, right?
Happy happy birthday dear Deva! Hope that you and T-Rex have the best day, with no more destruction!
P.S. – You smell goooood.
Happy Birthday, Deva! Go crazy today and do TWO loads of laundry!
Happy Birthday! Crazy puppies are cute, but 3 pairs of glasses! Hope they were just reading glasses.
Happy birthday Deva! What perfume did T-Rex get you? 😉
Happy birthday!! Argh on the glasses. and the laundry.
Have a great day, Deva!
Happy birthday, Deva! May it be fragrant and fun!
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday, Deva!
Happy Birthday Deva! You smell extra special birthday great!
Happy Birthday!!
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday, Deva!
Happy Birthdat Deva. I hope you do something nice for yourself in celebration!
Ugh, Birthday
Happy Birthday! Fingers crossed on that Lotto win! 🙂
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday, Deva! I’m a Pisces as well and my birthday already passed this year 😉
At the moment, I’m still enjoying yesterday’s Caron Tabac Blond. This afternoon I plan to wear EL Youth Dew, one of my first perfumes, a few light years ago. 😉
Twin! It’s snowing here, so even though I wore Youth Dew yesterday, I find I need it twice as much today (so I’m WEARING twice as much today!) 😉
I like how you think, olenska! 🙂
I’m in Youth Dew as well, a few dabs of the bath oil from my adorable little brown bottle.
Yay for vinty Youth Dew! I may do tiny vintage bottle on one hand and circa 2009 retro blue bottle on the other, just to compare.
I wanted to wear Bronze Goddess, but it is just to chilly here today so this is what I did:
JM Orange Blossom lotion 1/2 point + JM Vintage Gardenia Cologne 1/2 point=1 point. I figured I better not get full points since Jo Malone was acquired by Estee Lauder, but thought I should get 1/2 points for each to make it a full point. Makes sense to me anyway.
Points be damned, you smell wonderful! And Jo Malone scents are perfect for mix and match pairings!
Hello Kris,
I’m taking the same route as you, and going with Jo Malone. For me, it’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt (my favourite JM).
I think I did that on Monday or Tuesday. I was hoping for at least 1/2 credit for the same reasons.
I do not own any EL or Aramis at the moment. Even if i did, I would be in Coromandel anyway. Gotta live it up before spring comes. This is definitely a fall/winter scent for me, but I love it!
And with any luck, spring will be here TOMORROW.
You smell GREAT!
I don’t have any EL or Aramis, so today I’m wearing “Embers” by Rouge Bunny Rouge. Top notes pink pepper, nutmeg, clove. Heart freesia, jasmine, cistus, incense. Base styrax, Peru balsam, sandalwood.
Very enjoyable spicy woodsy incense, has lasted to mid afternoon. Might do better in warmer weather (some Fragrantica reviews suggest so anyway). It is too similar to Bois d’Encens – although a more pleasant and rounded scent – for me to want more of this right now. Might revisit in Summer.
SOTD is EL Beautiful from a very small vial that I’ve had in my box of decants forever. I’ve only used it one time. But now I’m having a wonderful way back trip to the 80s. My older sister wore this for most of high school, so it makes me think of her. I am really enjoying the wine and roses effect. It makes me think of some other classic rose lovelies like Cartier So Pretty. Now I am thinking I should be wearing Beautiful more often. Anyone know how the current stuff is?
I got musky floral, which was delightful, but different from your description.
It’s smelled different to me in hot weather, so maybe that has something to do with it? Or maybe a difference in the edp and edt? I don’t know what version I am wearing b/c the label is teeny on the bottom of the vial.
I’m pretty sure the concentration I tried was the parfum, which could be very different from the EDP and EDT. I’ll try the EDP and parfum and compare them soon (this weekend?).
Beautiful reminds me of my mom. She always had a bottle of it on her dresser but only wore it on occasions. I loved the way it smelled, but am really fearful of trying it now because it may not be as nice as it was.
One of the reasons I avoided it for so long was because it only reminds me of fighting over clothes with my sister, and just her, from when we were teens. Who wants to be like their sister at that age? But now for sure I am over it, lol!!!
I can’t comment on current EL Beautiful, but I, too, have wonderful memories of it in the 80s. My best friend wore it throughout high school and she always smelled divine. Because she wore it as her signature and we were BFFs, I couldn’t wear it, but always wanted to! Instead I wore RL Lauren, Poison, LouLou, Ungaro Diva and The Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose. Clearly the perfumista obsession started early with me!
Well, my older sister also wore RL Safari, so she must have been on to something. I wore PW Tea Rose which was kind of my signature scent for a few years. And I do like Diva now which I only discovered the other year but I never smelled it back then. But how could anyone forget their iconic white dress, big bust ad campaign? There are a lot of really good 80s fragrances for sure.
I’ve never worn Beautiful and don’t think I ever will. In high school my jazz choir microphone partner drenched herself in it, so I literally (take that, grammar day!) inhaled it for a year. It might have been a fragrance that I could enjoy (it really is beautiful) but I imbibed enough of it that year for a lifetime. It also had the effect of turning me off to Estee Lauder perfumes altogether (though I’m open to trying some now.)
On the other hand, I loved smelling Lauren and Paris in classrooms at school – and coveted Diva because the ad. There are many many perfumes from the 80s that I love and wear often. I’ve spent the last year or so buying all of the fragrances I wanted in high school but couldn’t afford 😉
There were a fair number of vintage versions on ebay the last time I looked, and very reasonable. Minis, too, if you don’t need a lot.
I’ll have to check it out. Sometimes that is the best way to get the old stuff!
I’m all about buying vintage minis. They’re inexpensive but hold enough for years of wearings. And it’s a pretty good bet that they contain the original fragrance from the initial launch. (Not always the case, but generally it is.)
Happy Friday! I’m at Mom’s and without a true Lauder so I’m wearing En Passant. I’m digging cactus around the burn pit today and expect it won’t last long in the heat, but I smell fresh and springy for the moment. If I take a break and need a refresh, I plan to try out some of the old bottle of Origins Spring Fever to see if it’s still any good. Haven’t worn it in years and forgot I even had it.
Oh you poor thing…having to settle for En Passant. 🙂
Sounds like you’ve got a lot of hard work today. I hope perfume will be a nice counterpoint!
Hey twin! Not having any bona fide Estee Lauders in my collection, I chose En Passant in honor of the lilac that just started blooming in our yard yesterday!
I wish we could grow lilacs here but this is my substitute. Enjoy the real ones for me!
Ooo, watch out for that cactus!
Phew! Three huge cholla clumps and a good sized opuntia have been evicted and a new trench has been dug and lined with pot shards and rocks. The burn pit is now safe and ready for cooperative weather. I decided I couldn’t face Spring Fever so am testing another of the attars, Claire de Lune. It’s really, really a beautiful bright jasmine and I would probably buy a bottle if it was still available.
I don’t know where you are, but here in southern AZ there is apparently some rain forecasted for next Tuesday, so I’m hoping for precipitation for everyone/where who needs it.
Texas Hill Country and we supposedly have a good chance for storms Sunday night through Wednesday so my fingers are crossed. Hope everybody that needs it gets a good soaking but no scary flooding.
Yes! Hoping for “a good soaking but no scary flooding” is it exactly! (Especially during monsoon season.)
Knowing for me. I have a mini which may be slightly off, not sure if this is entirely true to the scent… Verging on scrub territory. Could be that it just isn’t working for daytime. My skin seems to want to swallow up anything I like and magnify anything I’m not quite sure about!
Twins. Hope you don’t end up having to scrub…
Wearing Aramis EDT on this (hopefully) last gasp of snowy winter in SE PA.
Showered with the weirdly wild Aramis Cooling Gel that has a lot of menthol
in its formulation. It feels ‘cold’ under the warm water, but when I step
out of the shower my skin feels ‘warm’ in the cooler air. Very startling
first thing in the morning.
Pointless anecdote: I remember about 10 years ago causing two uber-muscle
men to slowly move away from me as I ordered my Venti BlackEye @ StarBucks.
I was testing Aramis on one forearm, Paloma Picasso Mon Parfum on the other.
Both oakmoss heavy (I have older bottles of both, no knowledge of current formulations),
Aramis smoky and heavy with clary sage, PP having more patchouli and a hint of
dangerous flowers. I WAS that guy, but I no longer spray quite so excessively in
the more austere time we are living in (too early to rework that sentence into
grammatical rules). Anyway……..
Aramis is a smoky, clary sage, birch tar leather concoction that now that I think
of it, has much in common with Aromatics Elixir. Hhhmm….. another compare and
contrast on the horizon!!!
Onward and upward, people ! Cheers! 😉
What a interesting use of concrete format today in your comment!
And how interesting to compare Aramis and Aromatics! I find that Aromatics is herbally and super earthy, with high aldehyde notes but very warm; I would love to try Aramis again to compare myself!
It had better be the last gasp! And great Starbucks story 🙂
Great story and great side by side test idea, Bear! Very interesting about the shower gel – some creative person slipped one past the suits, didn’t s/he! 😉
Aramis is wonderful. My dad used to wear that back in the day, along with Dunhill (gorgeous!). Those 80s frags sure have it all over oakmoss. You might enjoy testing the black bottle Shisiedo Zen which also has a similar type of oakmossy base.
Agree that Aramis is wonderful. Liked to visit with one of my relatives for whom this was a signature scent for about 25 years. I always hugged and breathed deeply.
Brilliant use of Aramis to keep the muscle men at bay. I’ve always loved it. As much as I don’t like muscle men, it would be a come hither scent to me. I am a fan of Aromatics Elixir which I have worn on and off since it was released circa 1972.
Apparently, Aramis 900 is a gentler form of Aromatics Elixir.
Not the response you were looking for but I had to google Venti Black Eye! Who knew there was a ‘secret menu’? You guys are just too cool for skool!
I love Aramis! My youngest uncle wore it years ago, in the late 70s/early 80s. You smell wonderful.
Cinnabar here. It was my grandmother’s scent when I was little. I bought a bottle after she died and I think of her each time I wear it. It doesn’t melt into my skin like it did hers, but it’s nice to put it on nonetheless.
Very sweet that it brings memories of your grandmother 🙂
Oh! Cinnebar is such a nice scent. That’s really sweet you wear it in remembrance of your gran.
Cinnabar is a beautiful and wonderful scent and makes me think of stylish ladies at my church growing up! How wonderful it makes you think of your (no doubt wonderful) abuelita!
How lovely. I bet I’d experience the same thing with Youth Dew.
White Linen was my grandmother’s scent and it always reminds me of her!
Bvlgari Black. I am behind the curve on this one. Knowing that it is finally to be discontinued, I recently bought a bottle on eBay (very reasonably) and have been enjoying it greatly. The references to its weirdness puzzle me slightly, as I find it a very satisfying, cozy wood-spice-vanilla blend, but perhaps the EdT (the only version now available) tones down some of the rubber-leather weirdness? It reminds me a lot of Donna Karan Black Cashmere, without the Coca Cola note.
There is no other concentration other than the EDT. It could be your skin, or perhaps you are anosmic…how are you with leather fragrances? I hate to say this but perhaps they switched out the juice? On my skin I get all the notes listed in reviews: rubber, powder, vanilla.
Spray on some paper – the rubber top notes should be apparent unless you are anosmic, so get a second opinion if you’re not getting anything.
Glad you are still enjoying it, though!
So did I, bought it on the Internet that is, since it has been the object of so many five star reviews and now is discontinued. I agree, it is a lovely cozy vanilla woodsy blend. I would love to wear it myself, but my 15-year old son is in need of something other than the Axe that hovers like a clound around him and all of his friends 🙂 So I gifted it to him and he loves it!
Cloud I mean…:)
He will be the most distinguished-smelling 15 year old around! He obviously has good taste.
It is a perfectly unisex fragrance – no harsh edges, although my husband finds it a little vanillic for his taste.
Great parenting 🙂 I agree it is unisex, and much better than Axe.
I do get the rubber – what I mean is that the perfume overall doesn’t strike me as ‘weird’ (this seems to be the usual term in many online reviews) but, even with the rubber top note, exceptionally elegant, comforting and well-blended. Or maybe I just have a different idea of what weird is?!
Even the rubber is well-mannered, if I can put it like that. 🙂
I agree on Black being not terribly weird, but I think it’s that the rubber note reminds me of new sneakers or new bike tires, and that’s a very comforting childhood association for me.
I had a mini, but eventually got tired of the flat powdery vanilla.
Ah, thanks for the clarification. “Weird” is such a subjective term that I don’t put much stock in it. It is much more helpful to say Black is “unique”. I haven’t encountered another fragrance that uses a rubber accord in such an elegant yet cozy manner.
For and EDT I also agree that it is rather long-lasting and on me it also is linear. This is the first perfume I bought a back-up for, so obviously I’d be happy to take any unloved bottles off your hands 😉
I think black primiarily smells like black tea and violets.
My 16 yr-old son also loves BB, and is especially charmed by the clever “tire-like” bottle.
That’s what I got the first few times I wore it (cozy comfort scent) but my last wearing was all rubber tire. I bought a bottle recently as well (though I haven’t tested it yet) and fear once one has smelt the tire there’s no going back…
In that case, I await with trepidation! 🙂
Lol! But the tire/rubber comforts me, it must hit some olfactory pleasure center in me brains. 🙂
I haven’t worn it too often, so possibly greater weirdness lies in wait, but I don’t find it weird either. To me the rubber is just another facet of vanilla beans, which LT has pointed out don’t actually smell very good on their own.
Yes, and for me the intersection of vanilla, slightly smoky tea and rubber is comfy heaven. Really lets me know that fall has arrived and that winter will pass. It doesn’t work for me in warmer weather, since that’s when I want my teas to be more sweet and iced than smoky. Mmmm, tea fragrances.
FWIW, the first few times I smelled Black I could hardly smell it at all. In fact I think there is a comment from me somewhere in these pages to that effect! I was horribly disappointed. But I kept sniffing it, and now it is one of my very favorites, to the point where I bought my partner a bottle. Not sure what changed, but maybe it will for you as well!
I was kind of hoping I’d get tea instead of rubber, but no–it smells like vanilla-scented tires to me.
SOTD = my all-time favorite Estee Lauder (not counting acquisitions) Sensuous Noir! It’s a lovely sunny day, so Sensuous Noir is perhaps a bit much, but it is so rich and lovely that I don’t actually mind. 🙂
Happy Friyay!!!
That sounds very intriguing indeed! I must utilize the power of Google to see about a sample.
Bois de Jasmin did a good review of Sensuous and both flankers (including Noir) that perfectly sums up my feelings for them.
Twins!!
Also I really hope Friyay wasn’t a typo, but if it was, it’s a pretty good one. 😀
I really need to try Noir again. Scent cousin today, in plain old Sensuous.
I had to choose between Bronze Goddess or Youth Dew. The sun is shining, so it’s a no-brainer–Bronze Goddess it is!
You smell great!
I don’t have anything that qualifies for the community project, so today I’m in Oeillet Sauvage. I think it will nicely complement the pre-tornado spring weather we’re getting!
SOTD: Today was not an Estee Lauder day- I know the company owns ALL THE FRAGRANCES but I was feeling a bit contrary, so I splashed on Nest Wasabi and Pear Body and Soul Mist (really, that name? Really?) and I smelled like a subtly watery Jolly Ranchers candy, which was exactly what I needed. Instead of Nuxe oil for the summer, I may get Bronze Goddess, though – it sounds really intriguing!
OOTD: High waist jeans, black silk blouse, black and white polka dot scarf, and my (fake!) snakeskin high topped sneakers. Am eating a donut because Lenten diets are blah and God really does not care.
LOL! True dat! Eat another doughnut (glazed, please)
for me.
I had a wonderful glazed crueller- light, eggy and just wonderful!
Cruellers are my favorite donuts, too!
Have a donut for me..powdered cinnamon
YUM! I just had two cruellers!
That outfit sounds amazing. Please eat ALL the donuts for us 🙂
Thank goodness for kickboxing and Spanx! 😀
That could be a Friday project: wear something not owned by a conglomerate 😉
Great idea!!
Ha! then I am wearing that today sort of in advance (Hiram Green Voyage). Excellent Friday project.
Ooh, upping the difficulty! Does it still count if we bought the perfume before the company was conglomerated?
I’d say that’s a half credit?
That’s a REALLY great idea, Robin! In addition to wider known Indie labels there are also some interesting regional perfumes I think people should know about!
Love this idea!
I had a similar-but-different idea when I saw a picture going around accompanying the news of the Kilian acquisition – four smiling white men in blazers… could we do a project to wear a fragrance by a non-white perfumer? I realize we won’t have many choices, but that might be all the more reason to do it!
Love Jolly Ranchers! You smell delightful????
Oh, thank you! It’s surprisingly subtle and delicate and refreshing- great for a late winter/early spring day!
Without time to pick up a sample of something at the mall this week, the only EL I have is Bronze Goddess… but of course it snowed yesterday, so that just seemed wrong. However, sans backup, I tried layering Bronze Goddess over Nirvana Black and it works really well!
A few years back my husband was in Italy and happened to walk by this cute little perfume shop. He stepped in to buy me a gift since he was on his way home, and they turned out to have quite a selection of vintage. Knowing how I love vintages he spent a half hour going through the selection with the husband and wife who owned the shop and then called me on my cellphone and asked me to choose one with minutes to go until he had to go to the airport. Help!!! I wanted everything, but I had to make a quick decision so I chose 1970s EL Private Collection extrait (I had never tried it, so I had no idea what to expect).
It came in a small leather pouch, with a gold cord round its neck, and although the top notes are a bit too green for my taste, the utter loveliness of the floral heart and the beautful drydown is heaven!
So this is what I’m wearing today 🙂
How lovely. Good husbanding!
Yes, very!
It is, isn’t it? 😀
Good husband! Have you compared to the current formulation of Private Collection? I’m pretty sure the Estee Lauder counters at Macy’s and Nordstrom have it behind the counters (just ask an SA).
Good idea, I will!
Does your husband have a brother? ????
🙂
He has three, but they don’t understand the necessity of good perfume…. 😉
Oh you are so lucky! My PC is only a year old and smells fabulous – I can only imagine how wonderful the vintage extrait must be.
Private Collection is lovely so I can only imagine what the vintage extrait smells like! Your hubby is awesome too.
SOTD Aramis 900, which I picked up in TKMaxx and really like. It’s supposed to be a smoother, gentler version of Aromatics Elixir. For me there’s a beautiful balance of rosy/soapy/herbal/warm notes. Too good to leave to the gentlemen as the box suggests…
My, that sounds tempting … Hmm.
I saw that online yesterday and wondered what it smelled like. Since I already have AE (and love it) I think I’ll pass, but you smell lovely!
A gentle version of AE…. interesting…..
I do kick myself for not having snatched a set of minis at Winners (Canadian arm of TJ/TK Max). It was a set of four — Aramis, Devin, Aramis 900 and 1 more.
I believe that perfumer Bernard Chant is responsible for AE, Devin and the original Aramis. No doubt they have a lot of DNA in common.
I’ve worn Knowing this week, it’s too cold for BG, so I’ve resorted to an old decant of Pleasures. But I might very soon drown it out with more Knowing.
Knowing = good choice!
Last night, I found a mini of Pleasures that was floating around my house and sprayed some on. It had gone off, so I chucked it and washed it off. So now, I’m out of EL offerings and smelling the last little bits of Deneuve. After my shower, I’m probably going to go with Lyric since my travel spray and refills came last night. I hate it when the post office hides my packages. Right in the snow blower that we have only used twice this year. That’s in a corner.
I’ve been out of commission with a nasty, nasty case of the flu. This is my first day back at work since last week, and my first day wearing perfume since then as well.
I don’t have any Estee Lauder, so I’m in Tauer’s Incense Rose today. I’m enjoying it, even though I get that “hot iron on starched cloth” smell from it at first. I wonder if that’s Iso Super E? It’s not unpleasant, just a little discordant.
I’m so sorry you’ve been ill. I’m glad you are starting to feel better. You smell great, anyway, I love Incense Rose.
Oy – glad you’re feeling better!
Welcome back. Sorry about the horrible flu.
Yuck! Welcome back.
Well, the good thing is that your first day back is also your last day back- then the weekend! Sorry you’ve been clubbed with the crud, but hope you’re on the road to recovery????
Glad you’re feeling better.
Happy to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about the sickness 🙁 At least you only need to work one day this week!
I’ve heard that most of the Tauers contain the same discordance. That, combined with the price, has kept me away from trying it. Do you have any other Tauers with the same note?
Glad to hear you’re feeling better, I was worried about you, Dear. Have a nice weekend. 🙂
Glad you’re back! Is the hot iron on starched cloth similar to what you smell in Coromandel? If yes, I’ve always thought it is musk (the pleasant kind, not dryer sheet).
The scales tipped in favour of EL Tuberose Gardenia today, for practical reasons – I have a decant of it nearby, whereas my vintage Youth Dew is buried at the bottom of the wardrobe in a dark cold place. I love this one for hovering just on the line between tuberose and gardenia. Like on those optical illusion pictures where you can see either two faces or a vase, you know. Basically – I can smell either flower perfectly if I visualise it! It’s good fun, but I have to keep re-spraying it, as this trick only works for me if it’s fresh.
I’m wearing the always gorgeous Private Collection from my 35+ year old bottle. I love the intense opening green notes. I’ve had it on since the crack of dawn and the dry down is a lovely soft floral. I was a huge Lauder fan in high school and college. I think I wore every one of her fragrances released in the 70’s and 80’s. I hung onto this bottle even though the spray head broke. I managed to get some out to wear today! I haven’t worn PC in over 30 yrs! I’m dating myself, I know. 😉 My all time fav EL is Knowing. I kept a bottle with a trace of vintage sludge in it, just to smell the spray head occasionally. Now that’s heaven, imo. 🙂
I love Private Collection too. I have 3 vintage minis with three different smells! Two are much more floral while the third is much more green. But they are all beautiful.
I searched hi and low this morning for my bottle of Brasil Dream for men ( the onlu Lauder I own) to join in the EL day but it became a choice between finding it or being at work on time.
So I ended up with Escada pour Homme (1993)
I think I should get double points this week since I’m wearing Tuscany per Donna, which is produced (was produced?) by both Aramis and Estee Lauder. I have no idea which I’m wearing since mine is an unboxed mini, and I can’t read the copyright info on the teeny tiny bottle.
Good job YOU!
Happy Friday, all! My SOTD is Modern Muse Chic by E.L.
I like the original just a tad bit more, but this one is nice. It is probably the “oud” in it that gives it a little “oomph”.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Another one here in Tuberose Gardenia. Happy Friday, everyone!
Since it’s EL day, I thought it was a good reason to bring out Azuree Soleil, even though it’s still winter here and we’re supposed to get some snow today. I feel happy about wearing it!
I’m taking one for the team today and wearing Sensuous Nude. This really doesn’t do it for me. I’d bought an adorable little 15 ml bottle at a discounter, just cause. This might be the second time I’ve worn it, and it isn’t faring any better than the first.
I’m wearing this, too. I also bought the 15 ml bottle, but it sounds like I like it a little more than you do; I’ve managed to use half the bottle over the course of 2 years.
I just received a Chanel No. 19 edc that is supposed to be 1970s vintage. Opened the box and dabbed it on…smoothly green and gorgeous (is there a grammar role for “…”?). This doesn’t have label duplicated on the back. Honestly, I don’t care from first sniff.
The 19 I’ve sniffed since the 70s is very sharp and this is what I remember. I’ve also found that edc tends to last very well, per our conversations about scents turning. Does anyone know how to date Chanel from bottle or packaging? Less info on Chanel than Guerlain.
EL is good to wear interspersed with current faves. The sorbet cleanser of the frags!
There is a great link for dating Chanels by the bottle.
http://chanelperfumebottles.blogspot.com/p/how-to-dating-chanel-bottles.html
Ooh, good info.
Couldn’t find my sample of ELPCTG (did I use it up? or just lose it?), so I’m in Tom Ford Black Violet today. It’s just warm enough outside – about 37F – to melt last night’s sleety snow.
I don’t wear Black Violet often, but I used up a sample because I kept going back to it, and then snagged one of the TF mini 4mls off ebay because it was discontinued. Shame. This is nice.
I was thinking of wearing TF Black Violet Voile de Fleur, but I really prefer it in the summer. I do like miniscule dabs of BV though. I’d like to try the new version they did? EDT?
Black Orchid VdF? (Which you know I love. 😉 )
No, this is quite different, and nothing like Black Orchid of any version. Very woody, almost edging over into oriental. Fragrantica calls it a chypre, but they’re nuts.
Yes – Black Orchid VdF, typo!!!
I have a decant of Black Violet and had worn it once. It wasn’t remarkable so will need to try it again!
Beautiful, from the early nineties. This was a gift from my first boyfriend. Oh, I loved that guy, dated him for five dedicated years, he taught me about Kraftwerk and Joy Division. It felt so incredibly womanly to be offered a perfume by a guy (he also gave me a great black bikini, how sexy is that?), and since I had the worst self esteem, the fact that it is named Beautiful really touched my (then) stupid heart. Boy, was I silly, and that guy made me cry. Of course, he got the reaction to his actions right the day I went to college, but still, he broke my heart. Today he is my Facebook friend, still inside the closet, the poor thing. It feels weird to wear Beautiful. I feel bitter. Maybe I’ll follow Annicky’s tip and spray some Lipstick Rose to change things up a bit, after all, it’s now a Lauder, too.
Poor you!
Spray some lipstick rose right away!!!
Done! Thank’s!!
It’s always hard to wear an old fragrance with big emotional baggage attached to it. I am still challenged to wear Boucheron and Dune b/c of relationship reasons.
Isn’t it? Only wore Beautiful because I take our community projects very seriously and it was the only Lauder I had around, but it still pisses me off!
When I was having a hard time at work this fall I deliberately chose a perfume I like-but-don’t-love to wear every day because I didn’t want to ruin a favorite! Not sure I’ll ever wear Voyage with equanimity again. On the other hand Voyage is really great so maybe it will come back to me.
This is clever! I’ll keep that in mind for their hard times. Sometimes we tend to wear a favorite for comfort but it is true, the association remains forever…
For the hard times, sorry. This autocorrect is unpredictable and does not go well with my recently acquired presbyopia.
I’m in Pleasures Delight over Bliss Cassis + Sandalwood body butter. 🙂
Ooh, never heard of that Bliss scent — want!
We are Bliss junkies! I really like the Lemon+Sage lotion.
Wearing L’Eau d’Hiver, if fully looking forward to Printemps, aka the season, any moment.
Me too. Though the dusting of snow was pretty his morning
I’ve been so busy at work this week, haven’t had time for NST in days, tsk tsk tsk. I did stick to Lauder all week, though. Wednesday was Jasmine White Moss (which got the worst possible rating from Cole The Perfume Hating Cat: run away!!). Thursday was Sensuous Noir, which might be my favorite EL, it felt right all day. Today I had planned to wear Dazzling Silver, but it’s winter here again (rain! yay!) so instead I’m testing out a couple of EL’s Middle Eastern fragrances: Amber Mystique and Wood Mystique. Clearly they didn’t do well in that market, considering what they’re now selling for on the ‘bay… but I quite like Amber Mystique (spicy amber, bit of incense and patch and rose)… not so sure about Wood Mystique, it’s a bit more of a rose than I prefer. I don’t get much (if any) oud from either one. Still, not bad to my Western nose, especially for $17.
I really like the Amber Mystique. Quite rich smelling to my nose.
Don’t have any EL, although I do have a lot from their acquisitions. Today I veered entirely off course though and am test driving Tobacco Rose from Papillon. I like it a lot, but don’t know that I need any more roses.
I’m wearing Tuscany per Donna, which was one of my first fragrance purchases as a college student back in the mid ’90s. I haven’t worn it regularly in a long time, so it’s kind of a pleasurable nostalgia trip to pull it out again. I should wear it more often. My favorite EL now is Bronze Goddess, which is a summer staple for me, but I’m very picky about wearing my seasonal fragrances in the right weather.
Have been a bit of a spoilsport, apologies! I haven’t worn any Lauders this week nor today while I have a whole bunch. I intended to wear the Tuberose Gardenia or Sensuous Noir, both of which I like quite a bit on a good day. It started snowing here, and it is watery cold, and I needed some warming quality comforting fragrance with depth. I am wearing Hiram Green’s Voyage and I am very glad I did.
The challenges are for fun, they’re not required by any stretch. Wear what you love! Life’s too short not to. You smell lovely.
I hope it warms up for you! Nothing worse than damp cold.
Tom Ford Noir for women today, since I don’t own any actual EL fragrances. Happy Friday!!
You smell wonderful!
That one reminds me of Sensuous in a way. It didn’t seem very exciting at first sniff, but I’ve liked it better with every subsequent wearing.
I wanted to get partial credit today!
SOTD = Le Labo Vanille 44
Smokey incensy vanilla, perfect for this snowy day.
I am wearing a turquiose blue shawl cardigan over a satin-trimmed short-sleeved army green crew neck shirt (Tuesday’s was LS), dark navy skinny slacks (this was $9.99 on special clearance at Uniqlo probably due to generous sizing for what it was supposed to be – I could never fit into real skinny pants, Hermes bangle bracelet with colors that match my outfit and double-row white and blue diamond huggie earrings. To complete the look, I have a scarf with a harlequin-like pattern in blue-green, army green over a light green-tea background.
Your outfit sounds amazing..you get partial credit in my book! Who can’t give you credit when you are wearing a hermes bangle!
These days I am just in maternity leggings and a nursing top! Soon this weight will come off and I can fit back into my normal clothing. Not happening as at eat these M&M’s though..
Thanks!
IIRC,, this particular bangle was my gateway to the bangle rabbit hole 🙂
Those bangles are a particular weakness of mine, and yours sounds gorgeous!
🙂 and it was before I started to equate “frivolous” spending with number of perfume bottles I could buy for the same amount. At least we did not have to confess to Bangle Donatella.
but maternity wear is so comfy… 🙂
LOL
What an adorable and chic emerging spring outfit, hajusuuri!
Thank you, nozknoz!
Ooh , love the perfume and your outfit. I especially like diamond huggie earrings!
I’ve been known to only wear / bring this particular pair of earrings as it very versatile. If I had a choice of earring types, I would pick Huggies as they are so easy to wear!
…eeek…I meant I sometimes just bring / wear this particular pair of earrings on vacation as jewelry (as a non-essential) is usually the last thing I think about while packing
Devin for me!
I have several EL scents including some vintage, but because I like to wear playful and fun fragrances on Fridays, and patchouli is a favorite note of mine in early March as the ground awakens with the seasonal change, my hand reached for EL Pleasures Delight. A floral-fruity gourmand, I don’t get too much of the fruity strawberry notes nor the peony and other flowers as much as I do a sweet gourmand with a strong patchouli note. Although the ads pictured Gwyneth Paltrow in summer clothes with a basket of pink fruit and flowers in her bike basket, I would never wear this scent during warm weather; it’s too heavy a sweet. But on a late winter Friday with bright sunshine and temps in the 30’s, it’s perfect.
Sounds wonderful. I know fruity florals get a bad reputation from their oversaturation of the market, but it is nice to hear about one that reminds us why the genre is so popular. Thanks!
That sounds interesting – I’ll have to see if it’s any any nearby stores to sample!
Doing the Saturday morning housework in a cloud of Lys Fumé, there was a bit more left in the sample vial than I had realised, so I’m quite fragrant at the moment.
Kanuka – if you see this, I belatedly caught up on this week’s NST last night and saw your comment about rehoming Plum. I’d be delighted to assist, if I didn’t already have a FB and a back-up FB 🙂
Ha ha …I will keep it for you.
Wearing Knowing–from the Estée Lauder counter tester. It’s brand new to me; blimey, it smells good!
Ooo, Grammar Day. Is there a Grampar Day, too? 😉
I think it’s only in (parts of?) England, Creosote. I had a British history teacher who used to say Cubar and pronounced my name as Lindar.
Hee hee. I’ve heard it from some people in the Eastern US, too.
In Rhode Island, the rule is that you drop R before a consonant or at the end of a sentence and insert it between two vowels, so my niece is Juliar Edith and she’s a hockey playa.
Ah, like la liaison in French. Thanks–now I know!
When we lived over the border in Seekonk (MA), I was shocked how the accents in RI could change in the space of a block! Like going from PA to Yonkers. 🙂
Do you live in Rhode Island? If so, howdy neighbor.
I don’t live there any more, but I grew up there. My father and one of my sisters still live there.
I think I didn’t realize how good Knowing was until I got a similar, but way lower quality, green rose at random in an antique store. The worse one reminded me a lot of knowing on its own, but when I smelled them side by side the structure of Knowing was so much clearer and stronger! It was the first (/only) time I really understood what “structure” means in a fragrance.
Yes, my own knowledge of ‘structure’ is limited at this point. That sort of side-by-side comparison does seem like the perfect way for oneself to reveal or illustrate it.
There definitely is a lot going on in Knowing, and boy do I like it!
A funny thing happened on the way to the Estee Lauder… I am a card carrying member of the Knowing fan club, and own several vintage parfum minis and a vintage bottle of the edp (thank you Pixel), plus somewhere I have a bottle of Bronze Goddess, and a smallish bottle of White Linen I keep for nostalgia reasons… and today I am wearing Azemour Les Orangers… yup. Poking above my other bottles, the slim cylinder of bright orange bliss jumped into my hand before you could say, “Scent of…” And once I started applying I just didn’t stop. (Catch that “And” Robin?)
That happens to me a lot. I think Azemour bottles emit some kind of irresistible magnetism that the scientists haven’t caught on to. My Equistris does the same occasionally so perhaps it’s a secret PdE science.
Like some sort of olfactory high frequency beacon?
Whhaaahhhaaahhhhaaaa….(sprays hair, head, neck, arms, wrists, room…) I ccca a a nn’t rrrrre re re resist….
I was in the op shop yesterday and came across a large collection of vintage perfumes and soaps. There was a sample of fidji that I would have bought for Waterdragon but it smelled odd, not as I think it should. Shiseido Koto …unopened . A beautiful bear shaped glass perfume bottle …it looked like it came from the 40s and may have been painted once. It was sitting upright. Lots of lavender water. A beautiful blue glass, silver top sample sized bottle of a bourjois scent…art deco writing. And a fabulous box of wallflower soaps. I love wall flowers but have never found them in perfume. And guess what? There was almost a Yojhi Yammamoto Y3 jacket for $14. And guess what? I was in such a fug yesterday I didn’t buy anything, i couldn’t be bothered. But $6 for a perfume I might not wear is not a bargain…is it? Arrrrrrrggggghhhhh.
I’m replying to myself because I am such an idiot and you are all too polite to say so! Just been googling and the Bourjois is a 1928 bottle of Evening In Paris. I have to go back. Fortunately I am pretty certain o one else will buy them. There were lots of really old French perfumes too…but I didn’t recognise any of them.
With vintage even if you never wear it is usually a pleasure to look at it. And you never know, you could find a happy home for it later (hopefully yours, if you ever get around to trying it out).
Do share what you find in the shop! I’ve also been on the lookout for Evening in Paris because it is such a landmark perfume. Shiseido Koto would be good if you love chypres. Sounds like it is light enough to wear in summer, but vintage enough to have some personality. You’re so lucky! Please enjoy 🙂
Okay…just nipped back and here is the list of the perfumes that had names. Mostly full bottle size but some samples (S). Old means either metal or bakelite(?) cap.
Ryoto – gardenia
L’air du temps (unopened , boxed…old)
Molyneux Vivre
Corday Toujuors Moi
Roger et Gallet: The Butterfly (old)
Roger et Gallet – Jean Marie Farine (old)
Oud Hollandische (old) – seemed amazing
Painted bear – a mystery
Eau de Gucci (S)
Paloma Picasso (S)
Koto (unopened, boxed)
Bourjois – Evening in Paris
Lots of lavender water – all french
Lots of colognes…4711 and some others
And then lots of old bottles, unmarked but with silver or bakelite caps.
Nothing over $18.
If you came home empty handed, you’re a stronger person than I.
Oooohhhh, you really should take a sniff of the Paloma. If it’s vintage and still good, scoop that little baby up! Scroll all the way up today’s comments and look for the thread started by Pyramus. Paloma is good stuff. 😉
Yeah i used to wear it back in the day. I was more intrigued by the oldest scents…the roger et gallet Butterfly ( 1930s I think from the bottle ) and cologne, the Bourjois ( unopened ) and the Molyneux and Corday ( 1960s) … And the ‘ anonymous’ bottles…some incredible designs with glass or tin caps. There were also 70-80s miniatures of Arpege ( coffret ) and stuff like Amarige, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Fidji, and gloria Vanderbilt etc. The soaps were amazing. R and G blue carnation. Also apple blossom dusting powder, Helena Rubinstein.
SOTD: Aromatics Elixir. Definitely an Estee Lauder since they created the Clinique line, likely to appeal to young women who didn’t want to use the same stuff as their mothers.
I have loved Aromatics Elixir since it’s debut in the early seventies. I usually used the spray and walk through method, or directly on skin if I was with someone who liked it. Recently started spraying a generous amount in my hand and dabbing which releases the rosiness earlier.
One of my favourites!
I have the 2007 formulation and love wearing it to bed. On my skin it doesn’t seem to have its reputed monster sillage. Have you noticed a difference in the formulations?
I haven’t smelled any newer versions as I still have a sealed mini from around then. I did find a partially used bottle at a thrift store. It was a dark, aged colour and smelled gorgeous — that maturing or air/scent mix did make it smell softer.
My EL choices this morning were Youth Dew (weather is too warm for it), White Linen (except I couldn’t actually find the bottle – where did I put it?), and Pure White Linen Light Breeze (weather isn’t warm enough for it). So I went with Malle’s Musc Ravageur. Partial credit, right?
All of this reminded me that I really need to get some Bronze Goddess!
No EL or Aramis proper, but since they own Hilfiger I’m wearing Tommy Girl (the best perfume you can get at Target).
Forgot the project this morning and put on Bois d’Argent. Maybe I’ll put on Santal Blush tonight. Still can’t face Youth Dew.
I’m wearing Aramis Perfume Calligraphy Saffron, which may be the only scent I have that qualifies, other than maybe Aromatics Elixir.
Armored in white flowers, intrepidly setting off after showering with YR Manoi de Tahiti shower gel and shampoo, adding Manoi oil to tired, winter skin followed with generous squirts of Estée Lauder Tuberose Gardenia and Mr. Dame’s beautiful gardenia soliflore dabbed at the temples. It was a good smelling day and made me long for summer!
Wow. Wish I could have trailed you all day (in a completely not creepy way, of course.)
Tuberose Gardenia is fab. 🙂
I’ve been having an EL week too. Sensuous Nude, Bronze Goddess and Knowing. I work at an office that forbids fragrance so I tend to overindulge as soon as I get home. I also recently acquired some Chanel No 19 from evil bay and thought I’d try to get by the fragrance police at work. Thankfully I had on my invisible armour and no one said anything..
Hey, what a fab Friday. I completely enjoyed reading the EL commentary. As a child Youth Dew was a comforting cloud of scent at my grandmother’s home, especially in her big blue and white bathroom with soaking tub, double vanity and sinks, white fake fur rugs on the floor, and what we grandkids called the “movie star” dressing room mirrors with lights all around the edges. Grandma knew how to do luxe.
Today I’ve been sniffing Beautiful spritzed on a tissue from a spray sample, with thanks to a generous NSTer. I enjoy it but don’t want to wear it. I guess I need to be able to walk away from it to appreciate it.
Now that I think of it, that’s true for me with most EL fragrances (Cinnabar, Youth Dew, and White Linen especially). I like to smell them on someone or in a room, but I don’t want to smell of them myself. I feel like EL scents have a density or perhaps a background hum or pitch that overwhelms me a bit, but I do enjoy them very much.
Youth Dew has that effect on me, too. Takes me right back to my grandmother’s house; it’s a conduit for some lovely memories.
Wearing Sensuous, which is my only bottle. I didn’t think it was very exciting at first, but liked it more the more I wore it. Now I’d like to give Sensuous Noir and Nude another try, unless they’re both discontinued. I might have some of a sample of Spellbound left, but no, just… no.
Wait, I also have a decant of Private Collection Amber & Ylang-Ylang, but I think I wore that recently for another Friday project. Now I’ll work my way through everyone else’s comments, and see how many scent twins I had today!
Gosh, nobody? I feel as though Sensuous is something at least one NSTer is wearing on any random day.
