Wednesday scent of the day 3/2

Posted by Robin on 2 March 2016 377 Comments

the cat in the hat

Happy Dr Seuss Day! Hope you will have lots of good fun that is funny. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in yesterday's flanker: Estée Lauder Sensuous Nude. Tea at the moment: Harney & Sons Kagoshima.

Reminder: On 3/4, wear a fragrance from Estée Lauder or Aramis, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

First perfume I unpacked this morning was Jardins d’Armide so that’s what I’m wearing. At least this perfume box was easily accessible. I hate moving

It went pretty smoothly aside from the fact that I’m exhausted. Now I just have tons of boxes to unpack.

Glad you’re over the hard part. We’re planning to move very soon and it feels like we just moved, even though it’s been a year and eight months. I’m stressed out just thinking about it. Hope you’re done rehoming yourself for a while.

I think you really must be superwoman.

I broke down in tears when we moved back home after being out for over a year during a major project, as it was so stressful and not finished etc.. Seems pretty minor compared to what you did!

How? Were you able to hire movers to do everything for you? Are you from a family of 15 and everyone came in and did the work in an afternoon while you were in the hospital? 🙂

We are starting to look for a bigger house and I’m dragging my feet because the thought of packing all our stuff depresses me. We’ve been in our house for almost eight years (and have a lot of junk) but before that we moved four times in five years. I still have a recurring nightmare that I left a box at the old house but don’t realize it until a year later.

CDG Zagorsk. The more I wear of my decant the more I like its bright clean lines: it’s really not smoky at all. I don’t know of any other incense like it. I probably wouldn’t buy a full bottle but it’s definitely my favourite of the Incense line.

Zagorsk just never grew on me. But you’re reminding me I have not pulled out my Ouarzazate in a long time…so maybe I’ll be your cousin this afternoon 🙂

I got samples of all the CDG incense series a while back and was waiting until my mini sprayers arrived before using them. Might do them next week as my lost-and-found project, although I have a l’artisan library set with prior claim. I want to try the incense before the weather turns warm, but hey, this is England, we have a while yet…

Just noting that really only Jaisalmer, to me, is a cold-weather-only scent. I wear Ouarzazate mostly in summer, and I would think Zagorsk & Kyoto & Avignon were pretty much year round. Maybe others will disagree!

Yep. Kyoto is a summer incense to me for sure and Ouarzazate is wearable year-round. I should pull my bottle out too. I don’t think any are unwearable in warm weather unless you’re really not in an incense mood or the Avignon happens to go soapy on your skin as it does on me.

SOTD = DSH Oeilets Rouges. A lovely powdery carnation, cozy and pretty on this nasty day in Michigan. Took me 2 hours and 15 minutes to do my 45 minute commute. Ugh.

I didn’t realize you were in Michigan – I’m from Mt. Pleasant. I’m guessing you’re in the Detroit area? Is there any good perfume shopping there? I wasn’t into it in the era I lived there, but now I’m curious.

My parents still live there. I make it up a few times a year. It’s about a six hour drive from where I am in the Chicago area. And sadly, no perfume shopping anywhere from here to there that I’m aware of.

When the weather is nice and the traffic is light, it takes about 37 minutes. Traffic being what it is, with the price of gas down, generally take 45-50 minutes. The snow on top of freezing rain yesterday made getting home last night and come back this morning pretty treacherous.

Due to the fact that I work night shift hours and sleep during the day, my SOTN for March 2 was Fiore di Bellagio by En Voyage Perfumes

I switch back to day shift hours when I am off, but during my work week my “day” usually starts at 3 pm when I wake up & I have to work from 6 pm – 5:30 am. I have a 75 minute commute one way in good traffic & good weather (don’t even get me started on bad traffic & weather….so I totally empathize with your commuter woes). I don’t usually get home until @7-7:30 am, go to bed around 10 am, then wake back up at 3pm, and do it all over again! I just now arrived home from work & I am making myself dinner with a glass of wine before heading to bed (I figure it’s got to be happy hour somewhere in the world right now…LoL)

I love the scent of carnations too, but I find the En Voyage Perfume one is a very spicy carnation, rather than a powdery one. I will have to try and give the DSH one a sniff after so many positive comments.

Now what I shall I wear when I wake up in a few hours and start March 3rd…..decisions, decisions, lovely scented decisions!!!

My father read all the Dr. Seuss books to me so well, with such a sweet, melodic voice, that one of the main reasons I want to have children is to hear him doing the same for them. Hell, I may ask him to read to me again when I see him at Easter.

Van Cleef and Arpels’ Bois d’Iris today. The vanilla is coming out much more because I sprayed it on skin, and I prefer the way it smells in its opening and on my clothes. I’m not usually one that loves the opening of a scent, but this one is one of my favorites.

    Have a good day, all.

I love it too, and it does not feel masculine to me, in addition to Iris, I get a lot of vanilla, not too sweet, and some pretty mellow woods-no scratchy pencil shavings here.

(But then, they watched the Toy Story DVD so often that I could probably recite the dialogue from that, too.)

I love this. My dad was by far my favorite person in the world, but he was horribly dyslexic so read too slowly for me since I could read easily very young. My poor mom always got the pleasure of doing the reading and my dad got the cuddles.
The Richard Scary books were my favorites but I loved Seuss, and Beatrix Potter as well as the books that had been my parent’s. I can still recite the entirety of Scat Scat Go Away Little Cat and several others.

I really just logged in to see what all of you were up to, so I’m not wearing any scent at the moment except the remnants of some unidentified perfume oil, quite pretty, slightly lilac-y, that I bought in Dubai years and years ago. I don’t know what perfume I’ll wear when the day begins. Maybe White Linen, just to be contrary, because the dress I plan to wear is black, and made of dome sort of polyester georgette.

Insomnia is truly the worst. Some friends at work have said that tart cherry juice helps.

My dad sells cherry juice and pills in his wine store. It has quite a few loyal customers. Make sure you get the tart juice, not the sugary kind at the grocery store. You’ll likely have to go to a natural foods or vitamin store to find it. Most of his customers prefer the cherry concentrate that has to be mixed with water. It isn’t the most pleasant drink, but the benefits outweigh the few seconds it takes to get it down. Tart cherry juice naturally contains melatonin, which should help your sleep. It also reduces inflamation, which anywhere in your body can cause a whole host of annoying issues. It certainly can’t hurt to try it. Good luck!

Insomnia is the worst; especially when you want to sleep but can’t. Have you tried some of the over the counter medications that are nonaddictive? They might help.
      Good luck.

I hate being unable to sleep, but thankfully it’s not a regular problem for me if I keep my anxiety under control. My father in law has severe insomnia and has tried everything to no avail. The sleep specialists have prescribed loads of drugs and dietary changes over the years that did nothing so he now just sleeps when he can. He says he wishes he had the time and money back he spent doing sleep studies. His mother is the same way, only sleeping about two hours at a time. I have my fingers crossed that my husband doesn’t get that bad.
The only thing that I have done that helps (and mine is more of a panic disorder thing than true insomnia) is daily light exercise. If I don’t walk or do something outside regularly to reset my brain I start a cycle of sleeplessness. It helps my husband to do so too, and I’ve wondered if it would help his dad and grandma if they were physically able.

Like your FiL, over the years I’ve tried all sorts of meds, but I seem to be quite resourceful about defeating them. Now I just try not to let myself be too stressed about the situation. If I lie awake too long just thinking, I get resentful and restless, especially when Richard and the rest of the world are asleep, so I read on my Kindle and I play online or I plan things to do with work. Sometimes, I mark assignments. Sew a hem. Stitches on a missing button. Anything, just so I don’t fret about being awake. But this last week has been worse than usual, and today I’m so tired I feel really sick. I’m going to try the cherry juice –sounds delicious and can’t do any harm– and step up my exercise. I’m a bit twizzled up, especially in my upper body, and more stretching would be helpful.

After struggling with severe insomnia for a couple of years, I got prescription sleeping pills at the doctor – but never really took any of them. The box is still sealed, after a long time, actually the pills are probably too old, but I won’t check. The simple knowledge that I can access them whenever needed has been enough to make me sleep within 5 minutes. Darn anxiety!

So, today it’s “Lumière Blanche” from Olfactive Studio. Top notes cardamom, cinnamon and star anise. Heart almond, cashmere musks (you what now?) and iris. Base cedar, sandalwood, tonka beans and white musk.

This smells very pleasant with the cardamom dominant but not domineering. The dry down is a beautiful but reticent aromatic mix. I guess it lasted about 2 hours for me but I may get another sample in warmer weather in the hope it might persist a bit longer.

Curious: Did the shop allow you to test the perfume before buying? I found some bottles in a shop near me and I didn’t know the protocol. Plus the guy was a little intimidating and I was afraid to ask. I would hate to buy something I couldn’t wear because it had turned or whatnot.

I feel that struggle. Generally, if it’s locked in a case I won’t unless the owner is helping me and I can ask. If it’s laying out though, I don’t think anything of it.

Once though, i found w mini of Poison Espirit de Parfum and went to sample it. The entire contents poured out of my arm! I was so embarrassed even though no one saw me that I bought it. I had to ride home with my arm out the window.

JHL (named for Estee Lauder’s husband, Joseph H. Lauder) is my husband’s signature fragrance. He’s been wearing it since the 1980’s, so I reached across the bathroom counter over to his stuff! 🙂

The bottle is shaped like Joseph’s favorite Cognac bottle, and the original box after his smoking jacket. It is GOOD STUFF!! I smell like I’ve been snuggling with my honey this morning…..good stuff too!!!! 🙂

SOTD is Fille De Berlin, I’m so so happy to finally have a full bottle, another eBay bargain, I really must slow down for awhile, damage poll for this quarter has been alarmingly high.
Bright sunny start to the day, and gorgeous colour of perfume inspired me to wear a beige, red, pink and pale green maxi dress, after rain, howling winds and a brief snow storm I’m looking slightly bedraggled, with a very wet hem- I still smell good tho, which is obviously the important thing!

I went down a real rose rabbit hole this fall and found a lot that I liked. FdB started the entire thing and I also love SL Sa Majestie la rose and Rose Nuit, Malle’s Une Rose and Portrait of a Lady, Mohur, Heeley’s Hippie Rose on the right day (there is something in it that once in a while makes me a tiny bit queasy), PG Ispahan, Phi, and again on the right day, Rose Flash. It can be sweet and the creosite can get to me, but on the right day I love it. A lot of roses to sour on me, so some that are popular with others were fails for me, perhaps most sadly all the iterations of Vero Kern’s Rosy. I’d love to hear your favorites as I am always on the look out.

Hi Amy, I haven’t tried that many, most of the ones u mention are still on my ‘to sniff soon’ list!
However I have a big bottle of POAL, which I adore, and Tauer’s incense Rose is going to be my Autumn perfume purchase.
I have Epic, but I don’t get much rose from it, I like layering it with florals/roses tho.
Tocade is one I like at night time, as its cosy, it really grew on me, I didn’t like it at first. I really like Eau d’chloe, for ‘rose lemonade’ in the summer. I also want to try try Annick Goutals roses.

Questions that are unrelated to this post:

    – I’m going to a conference in wet, cold Berlin next week. What are some good conference perfumes? Empowering, inspiring, but unoffensive?

    – Do you find that perfume (yours or others) bothers you when you are eating food? How do you reconcile the battling scents of food and perfume?

Hi Koyel, concerning conference, I recommend any Chanel (see ‘what is your most versatile perfume’ post on BdJ, any 31 Rue Cambon especially, or when not available no 5 espc. extrait, or Cristalle but maybe a bit too summery for Berlin cold and wet.

I never find perfume interfering with food, when going out for a really nice dinner (which we seldom do) I apply sparingly, and from the ‘versatile’ bunch. Good luck in Berlin!

I second Hamamelis’s ideas about the Chanels, especially 31 RC. They are versatile indeed, and will adapt obligingly to every activity, from listening to keynotes to the conference dinner, and also (if you’re at all like me when I go to conferences) skiving off on your own lonesome to shop or just potter about the city. Have fun!

      1. I agree about Chanel – they are quite versatile and inoffensive, but still beautiful. Hermes is another good inoffensive line, although not as inspiring as Chanel for me.

Perfume with large sillage tends to be noticed, so you can try reducing it by dabbing on skin and avoid spraying on fabric.

      2. Very, very, rarely do I notice my perfume when eating. Usually it is because I wore a powerhouse. On the other hand, anybody who wears perfume tends to not notice it after a while – like background noise. If you are eating in close quarters with others then it is likely they will notice your fragrance more than you.

As a rule, and there are obviously many exceptions, orientals and gourmands tend to pair better with food. The gourmand is tricky because it could clash with the food. I would avoid anything too sweet.

Hope this helps, good luck! ????

Such a great question and answers. I tend to go for things that smell grown up but also make me happy and entertained during long days. Various Malles do the trick for me – Une Rose, PoaL, Iris Poudre – but also Iris Cendre or Iris de Nuit. Misia would be good too. And I just did a long two days with Bombay Bling!

I am sure you will have a fascinating time in Berlin – such an interesting city.

I completely agree about the Chanels and would add No19 to the list.

I also think some of the Tom Ford’s could do well, maybe something interesting but elegant like Café Rose, which somehow seems very Berlin appropriate to me. Equally good and varied would be any number of the Frederic Malle’s – personally for reasons I can’t explain Epices Noir always goes well in a professional context, or Le Parfum de Therese.

For something softer and less assertive L’Artisan and/or Annick Goutal always seem elegant, inoffensive but not boring, anything from Tea for Two to Duel or Musc Nomade.

In terms of food I agree I don’t generally find it makes much impact but I would certainly choose something with more ‘heft’ if I was going to have e.g. steak and red wine, or something sweeter if going for tea and cakes (which happens not early often enough).

This may be an unpopular perfume opinion, but I tend to skip perfume when I’m going to a nice meal. Though for me it’s really a result of having gotten into perfume–I’m much more interested in the way different dishes and ingredients smell now, and I’d rather have a clear palate to enjoy them. It is inconvenient tho, especially if your evening isn’t ending with dinner! I’ve been known to bring a small decant in my purse to apply in the bathroom at the end of the meal, if we’re going on to a party or a concert or whatever next. (This takes some careful planning tho, because I have some perfumes I only wear if I can spray them in the privacy of my own home and let them quiet down before I go out in public. I often let the remnants of the day serve for dinner and then top off after. I don’t like anything to noticeably vying with the food – or irritating people around me. (My big fear.)

Agree, def feel fine about perfume from earlier in the day (I would neither abstain all day nor feel a need to shower just to get the morning’s perfume off, just for the sake of going to dinner! 🙂 ) I’m just careful about applying something new shortly before.

This is why I don’t burn scented candles at home. I live in a small apartment so the scent permeates every room, and it interferes with my sense of smell when I’m cooking and eating.

I don’t go out to eat terribly often but when I do it’s generally followed by another event that takes place in close quarters (symphony, play.) I don’t want to disrupt anyone else’s meal or annoy people sitting next to me at the theater so I wear perfumes that are soft-spoken and don’t project too much on me. Lately this has been Misia, which I love to sniff while watching performances but it’s low-sillage enough on me that no one else can smell it unless their nose is right on my skin.

Like most others, I’m not distracted by my own perfume when eating out – my concern is for others around me or, god forbid, blowing out the restaurant with my perfume.

For some reason Coromandel goes really well with Mexican food for me. But I have been put off by strong perfume on other people in restaurants especially strong florals and aldehydes.

I hope you have a great time in Berlin! (I’m jealous!)

As for conference fragrances. I’ve had to tackle that myself. I usually pick a fragrance that accomplishes a few things. 1. feeling confident and alert. 2. goes well with stuffy air – conference rooms are always stuffy!. 3. Can stand up to a full day. 4. Is rather inoffensive. My past conference picks have been AG Mandragore edt; Guerlain Vetiver or L’instan ; Chanel Allure; and Bottega Veneta. What I find to be a better tactic if you just can’t make up your mind is to keep a vial on hand so that AFTER you step out of your last session, you can rejuvenate your senses by applying something really great.

As for food, I always think that less is better if none at all for going to a restaurant. But a light application of a rose soliflore or frag with a lot of rose seems to go well with many foods – esp. asian, thai or mexican.

If I can only pick one scent for a conference, it would be Chanel No.19 EDP.

As to perfumes bothering me while eating, my own never bothers me but nuclear levels of others annoy me.

I’m going to owe as well. I planned it this way (chose to make only the minimum required prepayments on my freelance work, because when I’ve estimated more generously in the past, I’ve had some problems getting the refund disbursed), but writing the check is still rough. Hang in there team.

I just hate the penalty of not withholding enough because in addition to having to write the i itial check, there’s the what else you owe PLUS the interest. Let’s see how I do for 2015 as I did not add anything and took the minimum exemption.

Oh yes I hate the penalty too–for all the tax nerds ( <3 u!!) out there, when I say I made the minimum required prepayments, I mean I prepaid 100% of my prior year's taxes,* so, shouldn't see any penalties, just the difference between what I paid and what I owe (higher for 2015 because of irregular arrival of freelance payment.)

*I hear tell of an income bracket where you need to prepay 110% to be certain of avoiding penalty but I am not in it 🙂

I’m continuing my Estee Lauder World Domination Week with Lys Fume. I planned to wear Le Labo’s Lys 41, but I think I’ve drained my sample. None of the other Le Labo samples looked appealing (finally, one pretentious package and trend driven brand I don’t much like!). So Tom Ford it is.

I do like their aesthetic, but not the scents so much. Lys is lovely and Ylang, if I remember correctly. My favourite is actually their Patchouli (I bought a bottle for J), but the others I’ve tried have left me indifferent. Some, Like the Iris, I actively dislike.

I’m often influenced by the look of the brand (Byredo is a case in point), but have been able to resist Le Labo 🙂

Le Labo just irritates me, being all superior like that. (Plus, I hated hated hated Ylang 49. Smelled like pondwater to me.)

ELd’O is another outfit whose aesthetic puts me off.

Le Labo and ELdO are sort of opposites for me – I tend to like ELdO’s scents, some of them a lot, but I don’t like the bottles.

I think Le Labo’s products look nice, but don’t really care for the content. The naming policy irritates me as well. (I wonder now if it was Ylang that I liked. Need to check.)

I am really curious about that, is it very Lily like or more of an abstract smoky floral?

Meanwhile I have just ordered some Le Labo samples after sniffing the wrist with Lys41 obsessively all of yesterday (and enjoying the remains on my scarf today).

I get quite a lot of lily from this, although maybe not quite as much as from Lys Mediterranee. The floral part seems almost fruity to me, although in a very elegant way. Unfortunately, I don’t get much smoke, but there are some wood and spices.

It’s not the best of TF’s line-up, but it fits my taste well. As we seem to have a pretty big overlap in what we like, you might be interested in trying this. Then again, it’ll be discontinued anyway…

By the way, big news I forgot to mention I was in Harrods yesterday and they had LOADS of Fleur de Chine. Apparently it has been re-issued just for them. They had so many complaints TF has issued them with a special supply or something. They also take orders by phone.

Soo subject to their shipping restrictions there is a supply of Fleur de Chine and all is not lost.

Funny Le Labo started my real romance with perfume and I’ve had multiple FB or Bergamote and Nerolo, but haven’t been tempted by many others. I consider Lys and Patchouli and, depending on my mood, Rose 31 occasionally, but haven’t bought any of them except on sample packs. And I really like Limette, but it was one or the annoying city exclusives. That is I think their most annoying gambit so far.

I’ve heard that it’s been recently reformulated and not in a good way so I wouldn’t bother unless you can find an older version. I’ve seen the Samsara comparisons too but every version I’ve tried is sweeter and rosier than Samsara, which is why I associate it more with Tresor.

Tea of the day is coffee????

I missed all the lovely Dr Suess books as a kid. Myparents were not the “interactive” type???? So I jumped right into Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, The Black Stallion, and just about any book that featured an animal as the main character. “Silver Chief, Dog of the North” was one of my favorites.

I haven’t really been athletic for years, so it’s strange for me to be so active…but I’ve been noticing it affects other parts of my life as well: I sleep better and more easily so I’m more energetic, I’m more social both with the people I work out with and coworkers (though those aren’t mutually exclusive), and I’ve gained confidence by accomplishing things I never knew were possible (for me). I’ll definitely be keeping it up, and highly encourage others to get started on making it a habit as well!

Yoga is one of my favorite types of exercise–I love how it can be adjusted for a variety of levels and how easy it is to find on Youtube for those days when I can’t make a class. Good for you!

The possibility and even encouragement to work just at your level (as opposed to the “more is always better” theories of exercise) is totally what I love about yoga–and actually has translated nicely into other settings too. I used to struggle with frequent running injuries, but much less so now that I feel like a workout still “counts” even if you don’t do it at an exertion level that makes you want to die 🙂

My instructor always says “you have to work at where you are today, even if you’ve been able to do something previously, maybe your body doesn’t want to do it today, and that’s fine”. It took me a couple of pulled muscles to learn to listen to my body–and not just my ego–when working out!

One of my teachers used to talk a lot about “balancing ease and effort,” which can be applied beautifully to life in general as well as yoga!

So happy that’s working out for you! I def see a lot of the same benefits, most of all that I sleep better.

I also though really empathize with people who hate exercise. It took me a long time to find my way to a form of exercise, appropriate exertion levels, etc. etc. that I could do without feeling beyond miserable. Shoutout to everyone who feels the swell of murderous rage when someone says, “Well have you tried exercise?” 🙂

Glad you’re enjoying getting back into it. Also makes me feel slug like as after many years of training hard and a lot I have only walked and stretched for a few months – I figure there is a time in life for all of it, and will get back to it when the time is right!
Meanwhile, you should completely go for class at 5 as am sure it makes you more productive for the rest of the time.

You smell good. That was my scent yesterday. 😀

You are totally right about the exercise. It makes such a huge difference in how you feel. I’ve been a bit slack this winter – as usual – but have starting up again now that the weather is getting better.

The benefits of sleeping well is reason alone to keep me exercising! Also, there’s something extremely satisfying about knowing how much better and stronger you feel after exercise. I also started to see it like something I must do each day – like brushing my teeth. I have to floss/brush my teeth to make sure they don’t go bad and fall out so why wouldn’t I exercise a little each day to make sure my body doesn’t fall apart as well?

Never feel guilty for exercising and going to your yoga classes – ever. Your health is more important.

sotd: Houbigant Oranger en Fleurs. I recently purchased a bottle for myself and have decided *this* is my OB/white floral blend that I’ll be wearing frequently for some time to come!

I am looking for a orange blossom. How do you find Oranger en Fluers compared to SL Fluers d’oranger, if you have tried the latter?

SL Fleur d’Oranger used to be my absolute favorite. Sadly, I can tell it’s been reformulated from it’s original version and it doesn’t seem perfect to me anymore, it smells much more Jasmine focused now and less about a somewhat sexy (cuminy) OB.

I find Houbigant Oranger en Fleurs more classically styled over SL FdO, the Houbigant is almost like Robert Piguet Fracas minus the dosing of tubereuse. The Houbigant is really gorgeous if you want an OB that isn’t strictly straight up OB – it’s a blended white floral which is prominently OB. I also absolutely adore the L’Artisan harvest editions and even Jo Malone Orange Blossom but these are purely OB, without the blend of other white florals.

I haven’t tried the Haubigant, which sounds lovely, but I have recently fallen for Seville A L’Aube, herbal& honeyed, it’divine! Very good prices on eBay too!
I also have Bottege venetta Knot, which is a lovely and elegent summer perfume for me.
I didn’t love Fleurs d’oranger, but think I was expecting it to be more cuminy, and was disappointed, as I love cumin in perfume!

I was sad to see that SL has been reformulated, I can smell that as well and thats why I asked. I think LS has samples of Houbigant I will give that a try as a replacement.

The Houbigant and Seville are miles apart in style. Seville, to me, is like candy (tooth achingly sweet).

Just to add to the orange blossom possibilities, at very different ends of the spectrum, Jo Malone has a pretty good one, and Kilian Sweet Redemption is sort of like Seville but with something different – both worth trying. FWIW thought I thin the Houbigant might be the easiest and prettiest to wear of these.

My fav OBs are Lorenzo Villoresi Dilmun (OB, petitgrain, and some soft vanilla), and Laura Mercier Neroli. It’s discontinued, but you can still find it. It is very soft, very freshOB, with an accord that I can only describe as smelling like lemoncello aperitif. It is quite lovely esp. for spring!

Sampling a bunch of the Miller Harris Fumée scents this morning before my shower. They are pleasant but I think the samples are enough to satisfy me. I already own Bois d’Ascèse and now Lonesome Rider, so I have enough smoke in my life.

Speaking of Lonesome Rider, it starts off with a barbecue note I am not wild about, but that disappears after 15 minutes and then the drydown is lovely. It has that same sparkling quality I get from Orange Star and Incense Rose, but with Iris instead. I will give it a full wearing today after my shower.

Well, that explains why there was a giant display of Dr. Seuss books on sale at the grocery store yesterday. I may have bought baby Jack a few to go with the dozen or so he already has. Who am I kidding? They’re clearly more for me than Jack. The Cat in the Hat always annoyed me, but all the rest are among my favorites.

SOTD is Pleasures. It smells nothing like the glorious, cheerful, unique floral I used to sneak from my mom’s shelf in the late 90s. Instead it smells like something I should be cleaning the shelf with. I just bought this mini from the EL outlet in November. It seems safe to guess it’s one to three years old. It doesn’t smell like a turned bottle, did EL reformulate Pleasures?

Last fall I went to the EL counter to smell Cinnabar, and it smelled different than I had remembered. The SA said that none of the perfumes had been reformulated. I just said o.k., and left. I think I have a pretty good scent memory, and it wasn’t the same.

(admits in small voice) I hated The Cat in the Hat. It made me so *anxious*! Will he ever stop messing stuff up, will he ever leave, will the mom get home before the kids clean up??

      It was just too stressful!

I have other Seuss favorites, of course, but could NOT do that one. Never even read it to my children.

Oh my goodness I know exactly what you mean. I was so worried as a child – ‘where are the parents!’; ‘aren’t they going to get in trouble?”; Ah cat go away!’ My best friend is still capable of a hilarious rant about this 45 years latter.

I liked green eggs and ham.

All I could think about was how the Cat was manipulating the kids into doing exactly what the parents wouldn’t want them to. When a seven year old is asking where the parents are, something’s not right. I would love to hear that rant.

Green Eggs & Ham is wonderful. When I bought it for my son I also got the Spanish and French versions. I thought it would be fun to see direct translations when he gets older.

We have the people who are redoing the kitchen and bathrooms over. They are working on caulking the bathroom tile. That meant that I had to throw on some clothes before I could take a shower. So I’m sitting in vintage Bal, happy that my dentist appointment was cancelled.

    Hi everyone!

Right now I’m wearing a big spray of Black Saffron on my chest, which is very exciting. I haven’t showered yet though (about to) and excited to pick something for after.

For so long I felt like I was trying, trying, trying things and never really finding anything I loved. I got stuff because it was ‘what I liked the most’ but not stuff I was that excited about wearing. But lately I feel like I’ve finally started curating a small collection of fumes that I actually look forward to wearing! It’s so much nicer. 🙂

Ok, I’ve got to share as I know this is something only a perfumista can appreciate (although my husband did a great job of looking genuinely happy for me).
I ended up standing in line at the Diptyque SS last night way too long that I seriously thought I must be nuts but, I scored big time! All I wanted was the Essences Insensées 2015 (the jasmine), and figured it was probably a long shot since these are limited edition and top of the line items, and so maybe I’d pick up something else instead. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they did in fact have the Essence 2014 (mimosa) but in speaking with one of the assistants that’s all they were offering this year. Next thing I know, I see a guy restocking the shelf with the Essences, all 2014, but low and behold I see him put out one 2015, the jasmine. I couldn’t believe it, and brought it over to the gal and she gave me a very puzzled look and simply said, ‘this is your lucky day, that shouldn’t be out for sale’. Yeah! Inside I did my little happy dance, and checked out a $175 dollar bottle of exquisite jasmine perfume for, wait for it, $90.

    SOTD: Essences Insensées 2015

They still have a good number of perfumes if anyone is thinking of going today.. candles, not so much.

Oh – lucky duck! Awesome score. I have the MImosa – which is by far the most gorgeous mimosa – and I have the solid for the jasmine. But that jasmine bottle is so gorgeous. I have to fight the urge to buy it just because it smells so good. But I don’t need any more…. How cool.

Couldn’t decide on a SOTD so grabbed at random and ended up with Jub XXV. Turns out to be just the thing. I may have to get a bottle so I can give my husband his decant back. I’m not sure he has even worn any yet and it’s half gone.
We’re going to Mom’s tomorrow so I have packing and shopping to do today. I wish I could get motivated this morning.

Wearing Chanel No. 22 today. It feels perfect as I’m wearing a leather accented top that is black and white striped with black pants and a black blazer and black oxfords and red lips. I meant to leave a comment yesterday about how I was wearing Fleur de Chine and how I’m so bummed it’s discontinued. Why does everything I love go away? It seems to me that a lot of the time,it’s the really GOOD perfumes from a collection that are discontinued (due to low sales). Why doesn’t the general public have better taste in perfume?!

I like Dr. Suess, but like others I was too old for him to be read to me when I was a child. I do remember sitting on my dad’s lap as he was reading a Little Golden Book of Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He used to run his finger under the words as he read and that was very helpful as I learned to read. “Meadow” was a word that I found difficult. Strange how I remember that almost sixty years later.

Yesterday got completely away from me and I didn’t wear any scent, but this morning I’m trying to hurry up warm weather in Jour d’Hermes.

I don’t think I had any Dr Seuss books, but I loved Go Dog Go by Eastman, which read almost like a Dr Seuss book.

I did have tons of the Little Golden Books and they were my favorite. I also had the Rudolph one.

The first word I ever read that I understood as the word and the thing was “grapes”. My mom was reading to me from the Lois Ehlert Eating the Alphabet book. I have never forgotten this because I had troubles learning to read.

SOTD=YSL Opium Fleur de Shanghai. It was a sample I found in my stash….I really like this! I remember thinking Opium was TOO much when it came out, but this is a much quieter oriental. I was routing around for an EL Sensuous sample I thought I had, but cannot find. I think I liked, not loved, that…liked the Sensuos Noir better, but, of course, they discontinued it.

Testing day for me. Pre-shower, I wore Tom Ford Mandarino Di Amalfi (got a very cute mini for free when I bought Fleur de Chine) on one arm and Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant on the other. Nice citruses. What do you guys think?
Post-shower, I’m trying Juliet Has a Gun Gentlewoman. I’m disappointed to confirm the hat something in a lot of orange blossom fragrances smell plasticky to me (Elie Saab, for example, was one of the worst in terms of that for me), which bums me out since I love the smell of orange blossom water, and neroli, etc. What could be the culprit?

This is a hard one as I much prefer the Tom Ford and it is much more expensive. There are some Ateliers I like, but I find Cedre Enivrant a little harsh and chemically. M d’A on the other hand just smells really good to me. How did they end up comparing for you?

I came across a couple of bottles of perfume stuffed into a pair of boots yesterday (such a great de-cluttering storage system I think I might write a book about it ) so I am wearing Mary Greenwell Plum today. I think this could be a great early autumn scent as it’s quite mellow but it’s too sweet for me so I may have to re-home it (Waterdragon? Gaynor?). I do like that very faint fly spray note.that tempers the sweetness. It’s definitely the wrong perfume for me…and I can’t remember when I got it.

I only have a couple of Lauders, so I’m saving my Lauder for Friday. Today I’m doing kind of a Lauder’s Bent on World Domination day with the last milimeter of my Iris Poudre decant, which was remarkably hard to get out.. I had to turn the little bottle at odd angles. It was taunting me, I tell you.

A cold day but sunshiney bright, I’m keeping warm with SL Rahat Loukoum layered over L’Occitane almond oil. Mmmm . . .

We have several Dr. Seuss first editions we treasure. Last year my little granddaughter thought it would be fun to have the ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ dish offered at our local pancake house. Not such a good idea, she practically turned green with nausea as she tried to swallow those green-colored scrambled eggs. Since then, whenever she’s over and I ask her if she’d like to go out for breakfast, she eagerly says, ‘Yes . . but I won’t have the green eggs and ham.’
