The first Monday of 2016! Hope it is going well so far. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing L'Artisan Parfumeur Drôle de Rose, quite out of season.
Reminder: this Friday on 1/8 we're doing Woodfest Friday. Wear something woody — but no oud, because we already did oud! And don't forget, the damage poll is coming up next Tuesday!
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: Black (Bvlgari). 🙂
Nice!
SOTD: Angelique Noire.
Finally cold out-needed something warm and sweet
Cold out here too, but I’m pretending it’s not 🙂
Nice to see that you’re really enjoying your new bottle! Stay cozy. 🙂
I am also out of season and wearing Gardenia Rattan, which Aerin Lauder intends to be a summer fragrance. However, I am continuing on with my resolution to try every scent in my collection of minis, coffrets, and discovery sets at least once before buying anything new. This was the first scent in the Aerin Lauder discovery set I bought late last year.
Excellent resolution!
Great resolution! I should try to do the same
Wowww that is a good one. Ok. Gauntlet thrown. I will try to make some headway with my samples too. (Because I increasingly want to buy myself some Helmut Lang EDP, so, I guess I better hurry up with the samples!!)
Right? I have a full bottle of Mitsouko EDT in my sights and will probably have to wait for several months to get it if I abide by my resolution.
OH! If you ever wanted to do a split, to defray costs 😉
Verry tempted!! Want to chat on email? Catherineh789 at the old faithful gmail.
Yes, but how do you like that Gardenia Rattan?
We would all love a review,
Then, we would all have to go find a sample somewhere!!
I love Drôle de Rose, it almost makes fun of smelling pretty.
I’m also wearing a rose, but on the other side of the Rose-spectrum. I’m in Guerlain’s Nahéma. Quite a diva, but a good companion all the same on this gray day.
I am still shocked that they are discontinuing Nahema. Enjoy while you can!
Are they discontinuing all forms or only the extrait? Either way, I really need to try this one soon! Can’t believe I haven’t yet, since I love Guerlain and roses.
From what I’ve read at Monsieur Guerlain, all of it. But you know how this goes…you hoard, then they bring it back. That said, if we see it again would guess it will be in more expensive / collector packaging.
Was it really selling that well? I didn’t think it was that popular so I can see why the discontinued it. Plus I read some where that its a fortune to make
Oh no! Putting this at the top of my to-do list!
I have to go to Disney Epcot for a quick weekend.
I say have to cause I really don’t enjoy it – BUT there is the Guerlain Pavillion to partake of. Last time a bottle of Bois d’ armanie came home with me. Maybe I should check out the Nahema situation.
I’ve got a large bottle of extrait so I should be good. And yes, it’s a shame.
Oh no! I had Nahema on a future FB list, but was going to abstain for a while. Ditto Guerlain and roses.
Nahema’s on my future FB list too, i will have to make some readjustments and put it right at the top!
Hate that it’s January, i’d snap it up right now if my finances were looking a bit healthier!
That’s very sad. My recent purchase of a back-up bottle seems less crazily extravagant now.
SOTD = L’Artisan Oeillet Sauvage. It’s spicy, bright and somewhat sweet all at once. I love it. The holiday season was so busy (yet pretty lovely all the same) but I wanted to celebrate getting back into the swing of things in the new year.
Happy Monday, everyone.
That’s a pretty one.
Oh, I’ve got to get around to testing that one.
It’s really great on a cold day like today when I want floral but a bit spicy as well, and while it’s an edt, I can still smell hints of it a good seven hours later, even on my wrists which is usually the first place perfume fades on my fragrance devouring skin.
While I have been trying to decrease the number of bottles on my must buy list, I’m afraid I just have to add this one. It’s so lovely. 🙂
A good winter floral with seven hours of lasting power–I mean, how could any of us resist?! 🙂
I’m wearing Estee Lauder Cinnabar today.
You smell great! I must have gone thru a zillion bottles of this, give or take…
SOTD JM orris & sandalwood for a chilly rainy day back at work
I trying to make my way into the store to try Orris & Sandalwood. I’m looking forward to trying it.
Do you like it?
Barqs – I love it. Didn’t expect to – Jo Malone can be sooooooooooooooooo nothing. it is one of my 3 purchases for last quarter and has moved to the top 10 list.
Sampling- started with Lab on Fire Made in Heaven vs Slumberhouse Pear and Olive extrait. Scrubbers! Into the purgatory basket! Destined for the freebie meet! Then tried Memo Siwa vs Hermes Iris Ukyoke (sp?). I am enjoying the Siwa as time passes. The Iris I admired greatly to begin with but now it is faded and wan compared to Siwa, which adorable hubbie is also commenting on favorably. Today we are going to see Star Wars in an Imax theater, 11:30 mattinee. I love long staycations-we are acting like teenagers!
I got a sample of Made in Heaven which I was strangely attracted to initially, but it became grating(that dusty Cap’n Crunch note).
Saw Star Wars this weekend-3D but not IMAX. I’m sure IMAX will make it even more fun! Great nostalgia. Enjoy!
A fun day all around! I feel the same about Iris Ukiyoe, a beauty that fades too quickly. I still want a small bottle, though, because I’m stubborn.
Enjoy Star Wars! And yes staycations are so relaxing it’s great. Do let me know if you’d like to arrange a sniff meet up or swap at some point.
I’m also in the uk, and would really love to meet up with other perfumista’s for a sniffing expedition, if you do organise one, that would be fab! where about’s are you in London?
Hello – I am in central London so can pretty easily access Liberty, Les Senteurs etc. Whereabouts in the UK are you and happy to have other suggestions made!
Wonderful- i live in a small village in East sussex now, but i’m a Londoner originally, i have 2 small children, so grown up trips to London are one of my idea’s of heaven at the moment!
(Liberty and Les sentaurs are part of that idea of heaven.)
Nice and chilly here in the swamp today, so in celebration I am wearing the inoffensive and always loved CSP Amour de Cacao. Happy day to all 🙂
This sounds so lovely – must remember to try it if I ever see it (CSP don’t seem to be that available in the UK).
Jada’s 1st Fragrance surprise of 2016: Drugstore scents can be quite lovely!
SOTD: Vera Wang Embrace: Periwinkle and Iris.
So, what had happened was….
I was in Walgreens, looking for discounted Christmas chocolate. Chocolate is very important to my happiness and daily doses are required. Right next to the candy clearance were a bunch of 50% off fragrance sets, so of course I had to take a look see. I ended up snagging each of these sets for $10 each….(they have perfume, shower gel, and lotion)
1. Embrace Periwinkle and Iris
2. Embrace Green Tea and Pear Blossom
3. Guess Girl (for my oldest girl’s Valentine gift!)
4. Katy Perry Royal Revolution (for my youngest girl’s Valentine’s gift)
5. Eau de Gaga….gonna give this one away! It got good reviews, but I hate it!
So anyhoo….The Embrace scents are definitely run of the mill sweet florals, but very easy to wear and office friendly. The bath gels are great! Don’t know yet about Guess Girl and Katy Perry….they are hidden away until Valentines…..
HAPPY MONDAY! Back to work, and back in the groove!!
PS. This is the LAST fragrance purchase for quite a while, except for the ScentBird subscription. I am FULLY STOCKED with things to sniff! I justified it by using some Christmas money I received, which is now gone! HA HA HA 🙂
Nice job on the deals. Hopefully the others work well for you, too.
I should follow you when you go shopping! Great deals
I tried to wear Eau de Gaga. I liked it for the first hour, then it turned ugly on me. I couldn’t wait to wash it off.
Before I bought it, I used my phone to check reviews on it, and I found at least 4 blogs that really liked it. It’s just too masculine for me I guess! I have a coworker with 3 sons in their 20’s…one of them is bound to use it! 🙂
Sometimes those drugstore/mainstream finds are the best kind of surprise. I’ve been exploring a lot of mostly older mainstream stuff lately and have found some really wonderful ones that don’t break the bank. Enjoy your stash!
Today was hot and beach weather, but as I had to work I conjured beach with coconut shower gel and oil, then TF for Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil.
Now I’m watching Jane Eyre and wearing Eau Noble from my Le Galion coffret, as part of my effort to wear all my neglecteds 🙂 I’m getting a citrussy leather.
I had completely forgotten about Azuree Soleil until you mentioned it, you smell lovely!
Thank you! I realised I’ve had this now for 10 years and I’m worried it will turn before too long. I must wear it more!
Is it the 2011 Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender ( <3 )? Loved that version.
Fassbender is my favorite Edward Rochester yet! 🙂
Yep 🙂 I do have it on dvd but it’s one of those movies that when they’re on tv I can’t help but watch again.
Back in the office this morning (boo) but at least I smell good in SL La Fille de Berlin.
One of my favorite roses! When AN wears off I may put some SL LFdB on.
La Fille is on my 2016 FB list, so beautiful, i’ve recently discovered that it play’s gorgeously with Epic, as the rose in that one is really faint on me.
Great layering idea! I have both perfumes, so I’ll give it a try.
I wore La Fille yesterday! It’s one of my favorite roses :).
I’m back at the office today. I am wearing AG Nuit étoilée, on this super cold day.
I love Nuit Etoillee. You smell wonderful!
SL Chergui, courtesy of a generous NSTer. Yum. Love this stuff!
That’s a wonderful scent! I was compelled to buy a FB after a generous NSTer sent me a small decant. You smell outrageously fabulous 🙂
Thank you! Yes, this one earned a spot on my FB list as soon as I got a good whiff of it. It’s delicious. I should have several more wears in the decant I was given, but as soon as that is empty, FB, here I come!
You smell wonderful.
I bought this one for my hubby for christmas, yummy on him, and i’m trying to resist using it as well!
I wish my hubby would wear it. Yum!
Thanks! I put it on over 9 hours ago, and it still smells just as good. Very addictive.
Twins!
Yay!
Oh help me. I was waiting for payday (tomorrow, but in today) to buy a few more samples. I wound up ordering two separate orders of samples. Fortunately not too bad in dollar damage, but it’s only the fourth. It does not bode well for the month.
SSS Winter Woods. I’ve been waiting all year to wear it and it’s finally cold enough.
Oh, now thinking I should have worn this today instead. Maybe tomorrow. You smell wonderful!
I wore Winter Woods yesterday. You smell great!
Good choice…may wear this tomorrow!
We have blowing snow – FINALLY some cold weather! – and I’m in great lashings of L’Arte di Gucci.
You can have my cold weather too 🙂
Angel Liqueur de Parfum 2013: the candy sweetness dialled back, the darkness really amped up, and there might even be a bit of tobacco in there. Is it the best of all the many, many Angels? I really think it is.
I have the Alien Liqueur, and it is my second favorite of the Aliens.
That sounds like a good one. I have the leather version, which is also less sweet than the original, and I prefer it.
I think so too.
Wearing Chanel No 22 to help drag myself to the office for the first time since before Christmas. The burst of aldihydes followed by the gorgeous creamy bouquet is helping. My train being delayed for an unknown amount of time is not (thanks, CTA!).
No 22 is a sample I got in the summer and I’m considering making a FB purchase, but I’m not sure. One of several I want!
No 22 is beautiful.
I would say go for it but it depends on what else is on your list!
I may go for it! The scent is enchanting me this morning.
The other bottles I want are Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan and Amouage Beloved (and maybe Ormonde Jayne Champaca, but I want to test it a couple more times). I may end up with both the Chanel and the Hermes, since visiting the boutiques would be a fun gift to myself during my final week in Chicago. This year I want to focus on a small number of special bottles, so this would be a good start. 🙂
Wearing quite a fun combination today – TF Black Orchid body lotion with Lush Stayin Alive. When I put on the lush this morning my husband asked if he was imagining it or could I smell toffee apple! So for those of you interested in smokey, sweet toffee and apple this is a good one – also it’s really not super sweet.
Yum!
Sounds fantastic!
Delicious!
Kids are back to school and I have the day off! yay me! Wearing NR for Her L’absolu, again over Korres jasmine lotion. Very pretty for a stupid cold and snowy day. Have I mentioned I HATE snow?
I’ll swap you a day of snow in exchange for my 40°C (104°) desert winds 🙂
It’s A DEAL! better get some snow tires:)
Yay to you! I’ll be entertaining mine until the end of the month. Long life to school teachers!
First day back at work after the long break, and it’s taking me some time to get into the spirit of it… SOTD is an old favorite, Micallef’s Gaiac.
Same here. I enjoyed the time off work a little too much.
It is so much harder to go back after an extended period of time off. Have a good day!
First sample tried this year– Euphorium Brooklyn Suedois. This is a dense animalic leather wih a little bit of floral creaminess. Good stuff.
Thanks for digging up all the random ones out there for us Rena 🙂 this sounds really interesting!
Bizarrely, it seems to end up losing the leather (right wrist only– it’s so weird when my wrists end up smelling different) and changing into whipped cream. Like the leather and like the cream but it’s a peculiar evolution.
Big day back at work. I was inspired to wear the scent that I chose for luck/wealth/health/etc. in the new year, so it’s 24 Faubourg for me today. The weather is cold enough that it smells great and really warm.
Tomorrow should be cold too, so I’ll break out something I haven’t worn for ages. Already used up 2 samples of my 3 for the month–Iris Silver Mist and Chanel 19. Both lovely. Would consider larger decants of both.
I used up my sample of Fleur Chine yesterday. So happy to be emptying my decants. But I still have so many to finish
-28C with the wind chill here today, gloriously sunny and snowy after at least 45cm over the past week. I am starting the day in Botrytis and will wear Roja Dove Aoud tonight.
Botrytis…yum
I LOVE Botrytis….one of the most beautiful openings I’ve ever smelled in a scent. I wished it lasted a bit longer on my skin though! Mmmmm
Nowhere near as cold here as it is elsewhere (witness cazaubon’s minus-25 above) – here in Portland we have temps hovering right at freezing, streets that are literal ice-rinks, and schools closed for the day. I’m getting ready to log in to my computer at work (ahh, modern technology), but wanted to check in here first. I’m in Tom Ford Violet Blonde today – love it so much, and think it would be a great candidate for Woody Friday this week.
You smell great, and glad you are safe at home!
Going to be in the car all day today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. I’m wearing a generous smear of Salome anyway because it makes me feel glamorous. A very nice waitress made my day yesterday by gushing about how beautiful I the thought I was, so the remaining high from that and the Salome are helping to counteract my unwashed hair and grubby crazy-cat-lady hoodie. I really need to get over myself and tell people when I think they are gorgeous. I’m always afraid I’ll come across as a creep, but I shouldn’t care.
That’s is a nice compliment! Hope you are over your illness and feeling better.
Thank you. I’m feeling much better but still not terribly hungry, which is a good thing when sitting all day in the car. We are taking a couple of extra days on the way home to visit family and relax, so I’m really enjoying it. Tonight we will stop in OKC so we can squeeze in a visit to the Museum of Osteology tomorrow 🙂
It’s nice to smell the roses, visit family and things of interest. I always do everything in such a hurry. Might as well have an adventure while you can.
I have occasionally been swept up into complimenting someone (their hair, their coat, their smile, whatever) and then felt sort of bashful afterwards. No one has ever given me a dark look for it, though, so I don’t think the impulse was unappreciated!
I’m just too shy, but it is such a nice feeling to be complimented that I should really pass it on. Perhaps I’ll make that my resolution for this year.
MM,mi’m a speed complimented– if I see something that I think is wonderful- a baby with red hair, a pretty dog, or a lovely combination of colours, even the silk-tie-pocket-handkerchief on a dapper chap– and it seems to me that people have made an effort to present themselves to the world just so (not the baby, of course, that’s just one of nature’s accidental glories), then I dash up, say what I think, and keep walking. I think that people who have clearly pulled themselves together deserve the compliment, and though they’re surprised, they always begin to smile. I never see the end of the smile, because I have beetles off, but I think they like it. So, if you feel moved, do it. The world turns better that way.
I agree, spontaneous sincere hit-and-run compliments are the best kind. 🙂
I wear glasses and have a tendency to zero in on other wearers’ frames…am constantly complimenting people on their great glasses. The woman at Lush has bright red but nerdy Ray Bans …so cool. I reckon spontaneous compliment giving is fine ….but beware overthought or fake OTT type compliments (ugh). Perfume compliments are best.
I’m fairly comfortable admiring someone’s accessories or clothing, but making a personal observation is different. I think that what made the waitress’ comments so nice and un-skeevey was her sincerity and I’m not sure I could convey that. Shyness is easily misinterpreted as insincerity.
My scent of the day is L’Air du Desert Marcain. Like Mals, it is snowing here today too so LdDM is very cozy. Well, as cozy as I can be at work. 🙂 Happy Monday all.
Marocain…
I received a sample of that with my christmas perfume, am going to try it tomorrow!
Let us know what you think.
Hypnotic Poison. Quite out of season too, but we are having cool rainy summer, contradicting predictions.
We should switch scents!
SHL 777 Rose de Petra. One of my favorite discoveries of 2015. It makes getting back to the grind in the cold much more pleasant!
I’d like to try this one too, it sounds beautiful. Wait, my resolution is to enjoy what I have and not covet what I don’t! Gaaaah, this is going to be tougher than planned.
I’d be happy to send you a sample(resistance is futile 😉 ) pretsky 35 over at hawtmale if you’re interested in saving that resolution for next year…
SNOW DAY!
* . * . * . * . * . *
* . * . * . * . * . *
. * . * . * . * . * .
Woke up with Portland covered in a pretty snow yesterday morning. Now it is a not-as-pretty sheet of ice. So, thankfully, in a rare moment of forward-thinking, my school district cancelled school for today yesterday evening. I will probably venture out at some point with my camera in hopes of seeing something pretty.
Can’t decide if I want to stick with the winter theme of the day and wear L’eau d’Hiver–appropriately getting so much love by the community these days!–or wear something warm and cozy, like Tolu. Well, you can all see I have a difficult and strenuous day ahead of me!
I love L’Eau d’Hiver. I wore it yesterday and find it cozy even in its lightness. My travel size is nearly drained-which is an accomplishment in and of itself. Hope that decision is the hardest part of your day. Enjoy your day off!
Thanks, Elisa! So far so good!
Enjoy your snow day!
Thank you, Eleebelle! I hope your day goes well also!
That sounds beautiful! The landscape and the scents. I think I tried Leau d’Hiver when I visited a friend in Chi-town a few years back and remember liking it a lot.
There are some for whom the heliotrope is too powdery/ sweet, but I have never found it to be so. I *do* wish it was a bit BIGGER; it’s a bit subtle for my usual preferences, but so pretty and unusal, I try not to hold that against it!
Snow day – what a lovely surprise! I love both of your options, but would go with Tolu myself for walking around in the snow. Have fun!
I’ve been wearing the heck out of Tolu this winter! Seems so great on a cold, grey day–like a fuzzy, warm sweater!
Yes, good description!
I am having an awful day. Should have worn Bulgari Black (for the name alone). Instead I am in a drop of Chanel No 5 parfum and wanting to run away.
Sorry your week’s not off to a good start. I hope things get better!
Oh, no! I certainly have felt like running away some days. Hang in there!
Hope your day gets better!
Wishing you a better day.
Hope the week improves!
Oh, gosh, thanks all! I wasn’t really expecting any responses to my grumpy post, but it did make me smile.Things have improved at least to the point that I may not run away after all.
Sometimes just imagining running away helps! Because you realize that you *could* run, if worse came to worst, and that somehow makes it easier because you are staying by choice.
I agree with Regina. There’s nothing like a worst case scenario to put things into perspective. I indulge often.
It’s cold but bright and sunny here in the DC area. The cherry blossoms bloomed again this year, so I will head out shortly to say goodbye to them until they (hopefully) reappear in the spring.
I’m sampling TF Fleur de Chine. Or rather, was. It’s fading fast, so I’ll probably re-spritz in massive quantities later. I thought for sure I would be smitten, but thus far I’m … not. The weird thing is that I don’t know what is bothering me about it, and the first thing that popped into my head once the initial blast died down was “I think this is supposed to be jasmine here but it is only representing jasmine.” Maybe some sort of aromachemical thingie? I often get the same response to rose and can get rather indignant about it. Rose? This is not rose! It is an impostor! 😉
Ha. I kinda feel that way about a lot of TF fragrances. I’ve yet to find one that I truly love.
They bloomed again? Or they bloomed too early?
I actually looked this up, Robin! I was concerned that this late fall/early winter flowering would prevent them from flowering again in the spring or put stress on them. According to what I’ve read, the cherry trees that DC is famous for are a particular variant that flowers in autumn if the climate is warm enough during that season. They are Prunus subhirtella autumnalis. I’ve seen them referred to as Tokyo Higan, Higan (Prunus incisa) , or a cross between that and mamekazura (Prunus pendula.) There’s a ton more info online, but I think I’m in tmi territory already! 🙂
Good to know….and let’s hope they think it’s still autumn! I love those trees even if I never go see them now it’s so darned crowded when they bloom in spring.
First day back after 2 weeks off! I miss my afternoon nap.. 🙁
Wearing Sous le toit de Paris and did not skimp on the sprays – just love it!
Blue sky, but quite cold, finally!!! Happy to have winter here.
This is my last full day of work before retirement, and one of the things I’m looking forward to most are long, scented afternoon naps!
Wow! Congratulations!
Oh, wonderful! Enjoy everything! And congratulations.
Oh, my. So jealous! What a thought!
I hope you enjoy many, many long scented afternoon naps.
And congratulations!!
Congrats!!
Congratulations! So exciting, and undoubtably well deserved!
Ooh, congratulations! I’m very impressed you actually went in today. Did you have a particular incentive?
Congratulations,farouche!
Enjoy that time off!
Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy every single minute of it…..including those naps! Zzzzzzzzz 🙂
Thanks, all! 🙂
I love that one too! You smell wonderful!
Sampled Panorama today. I like the wasabi part of it, but then it develops a note I cannot wait to scrub off, it also in Ombre Indigo. I must check what it could be. Now back in Saffron Troublant to enjoy the last few hours of vacation.
Hard to go wrong with Safran Troublant
Exactly!
Yes, it’s great!
It is going to be a lonnnng week. I’m wearing Dior Ambre Nuit today.
Good way to start a lonnnng week. I’m feeling it too :/
I’m enjoying Chanel No 22 today, but just started to crave Ambre Nuit. I may put some on for bed tonight.
Hello, all. I’m late starting the day, but I decided to embellish it with a couple of sprays of Beloved, just to get myself going. This is gorgeous, monte resting stuff, and I think will have to be my next serious full bottle purchase. I’m always surprised at the degree of skank it produces on my skin: others find it more ladylike, I think. It settles into a beautiful, well-integrated floral hum after about 45 minutes, much to my dear man’s dismay. He clearly likes the opening….I’m wondering whether to wear it today to coffee with a friend. She has bad news to tell me (I think I’ve guessed it) and it might be all wrong. But then, what would be right?
What? And again with autocorrect, or my typing! I have to be more careful. I meant “interesting” not “monte resting”.
I was wondering what “monte resting” meant actually.
Me too. I figured it was a Kiwi phrase, or perhaps a waterdragonism.
It’s a Waterdragon careless thing- I should really stop using my iPad for this.
It’s a kiwi phrase now! Monte resting: when the writer’s brain is faster and more articulate than the device on which they’re writing. A shortened form of ‘monitor resting’ and computer unable to keep up.
Oh man. I’m sorry about your friend. Kind of you to meet her in person. I suppose I might wear something quiet? Lest a big scent intrude on a difficult moment.
(That said, I haven’t smelled Beloved so I don’t know if it’s skanky in a way that stays close, or if it’s more diffusive. Either way, it does sound v interesting to me, I’ll have to give it a test. Oh! Maybe both of us need to hurry up on it? Am I wrong to think it’s being discontinued?)
I also wondered. It sounds interesting and whatever it is, it will be made fabulous with Beloved. I don’t get a skanky note with Beloved, just a lovely, rich perfume.
Hope things are OK for your friend.
SOTD = Rose Flash.
What do you think of RF Elisa?
It has really grown on me! It’s simple but it smells good and it lasts forever.
I thought that I would love this scent and was surprised that I didn’t. I wonder if all of the flash scent have that über sweet quality? At least to my nose. It kind of reminds me of Rose jam.
Cuir Beluga ! I adore it !
Guerlain will have my head when they hear that it reminds me of Dove’s limited edition Wintercare soap and shower cream hahaha but it does. Ditto ….Malle’s L’eau d’hiver …
Ha, is that soap still available??
I wore Cuir Beluga for the first time this weekend and I absolutely love it. So creamy and soft. If that soap is still floating around somewhere I might have to check it out.
I have never used adore in a perfume context but now I will – I ADORE Cuir Beluga!
I had a weird perfume-shopping dream last night (…as one does 😉 ) and woke up feeling indignant there aren’t more rose and leather scents. Can anyone recommend one? I suppose Kelly Caleche is the closest I’ve got but sometimes I’m not in the mood for grapefruit. Should I try the Kerosene? What else is out there? (For what it’s worth–and to be just unabashedly demanding about it!–I want it to smell like either rough-hewn or polished leather, but not like suede or patent leather.)
Hm. Have you tried Papillon Tobacco Rose? There’s no leather, but the smokey hay and moss base give it a rough-hewn feel. Also, a review somewhere mentioned that it’s a rose to wear with a leather jacket (I concur!). 🙂
Ooh, I have not! I have really got to make a point to try all those Papillons the next time I’m in New York…
Ooh – scanning the comments quickly during my training but this is something I’d like to try too!
C.H., I think SheriG layers Cuir Mauresque with Rose Anonyme to get the rose-leather effect. I haven’t tried the combo yet but will…soon.
One does, and now that you’ve pointed it out, I share your indignity. A quick search brought up Rosine Rose d’Homme and Montale Rose Leather, neither of which I’ve tried. L’AP lists both in Traversée du Bosphore but it doesn’t quite fit the bill (IMO.) I do get a hint of leather in Misia, but that might just be me.
First day back to work since before Christmas. Has been an all out assault on my Inbox and office phone since 8:30am. Finally had to walk away if only for a brief lunch break. Overwhelm is the author of the ill-advised email reply, lol.
Just glad I reached for Prada Amber this morning. Has radiated some badly needed warmth, despite the 31F windchill going on outside- dang cold for South Carolina. And it’s managed to keep me calm and centered- ish (as much as a non-doctor prescribed substance can at this point).
I know, it is rough going back to work after such a long holiday. Hope your day gets better, but at least there’s Prada Amber!
Thank you so much, dottieCHI. It did get better and yes indeed, at least there’s Prada Amber. 🙂
I spent a couple of hours ambling around the streets yesterday as part of my scent map project. Some horrors: onion grass. Some delights: two metre high Himalayan Lillies in full bloom ….but only a giant would be tall enough to smell them (a vanilla scent apparently ). Biggest surprise: (kerbside) bottle recycling day, the first since Christmas. It appears I live in a wine and Champagne guzzling neighbourhood and the scent of wine/grape kept reaching me. So what perfumes have good wine notes? Champagne is the only one I know so research is needed. I have never really noticed wine perfumes ….a thin, sharp note compared to the cognac, rum , whisky scents? Any suggestions gratefully received. Off to the local graveyard today …for late roses.
Frederic Malle Une Rose has a red wine note. (“Wine dregs” I see it’s called on the website, ha.)
Brilliant. Thanks heaps….going straight to my notebook.
DelRae’s Bois de Paradis reminds me of gluhwein (or maybe a hot toddy.)
It does, and Noir Epices always reminds me of ‘vin chaud’ as well.
Fresh Citron de Vigne has a “pinot noir accord.” I wasn’t really smelling it the first times I wore it – then one day I had a glass of pinot noir that smelled exactly like the perfume!
Botrytis. Also I think Noir de Noir has a wine note? (At least to my nose)
Kanuka, a very late reply but I hope you see it! Rudis by Nobile 1942 has a prominent red wine note!
Brilliant! What a champ…thanks heaps. Everyone. Couldn’t even think of doing this map without you
Lumiere Blanche today for me. Still need to fix that sprayer….
First day back at work today – two weeks off, I was just starting to get used to it 🙂 The sun is shining, so at least that makes it easier to get out of bed.
Going with Nahema today, a rich and fabulous perfume to counteract the sad reality of the end of the holidays.
Twins!
Maybe you could also be Minister of Holidays in your new job…six week minimum summer break . Hope your year gets off to a happy start.
Moan groan grumble, first day back to work after 10 days off. Why am I not retired yet??? Why did I not win the lottery over the break??? …I reached for 31 Rue Cambon, thinking it would be just the thing but it somehow smelled wrong for the day (didn’t think that was possible!) So I diverted to Armani Prive Ambre Soie which is just right.
Like SheriG and MarjorieRose, I’m in the ice rink that is Portland this morning. I had to leave my car parked 10 miles away last night when the roads got so icy it wasn’t safe to drive any longer. I took mass transit home and will do the same in reverse once it warms up enough that the ice turns to slush.
In the meantime, I’m sampling Rania J. Ambre Loup, a warm amber with spices added. I don’t know if it will knock Ambre Precieux off the pedestal in my inner rankings of ambers, but it’s very nice on this cold day.
I wanted to try Ambre Loup after reading Kafkaesque’s review, but I decided that I’ve hit a saturation point for ambers in my perfume collection. Still, it sounds lovely!
I’ve been curious about Ambre Loup, too — really feeling ambers in general this winter. Warm and spicy sounds perfect…
I’m in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Amouse Bouche today. This one languished in my purgatory basket for a long time, and I’m liking it more this go ’round. A nice blast of sweet jasmine to start, and then the long, slow strawberry pastry dry down… but it does a weird, plasticky thing in between for a short while, where it reminds me of the smell of a Strawberry Shortcake doll. Still, it feels cozy on this rainy day!
I have a languishing sample of Amouse Bouche too. I want to like it but for me it’s all strawberry Poptart. I didn’t get the jasmine when I tried it but honestly didn’t wear it long enough to get to the mid plastic doll notes. I’m glad you are enjoying it more. I should try it again now that it is colder.
Coco edt, one spritz and I am good to go! Happy Monday, all!
Prada Candy for me today. I don’t often feel like wearing this one, but today’s the day and it is perfect.
I love Candy, despite the silly name. It’s a great benzoin scent.
Wearing Deneuve today and shopping on Amazon. Have almost $40 on my account and I’m going through my wishlist of books and movies to put on my kindle.
I am wearing Ostara today. A nice choice for a sunny day, even if it is January.
I put on my work-armour of No. 19 to face the day nice and early – and then found out I could have come in later. Ah well, not really a problem. Smelling more pepper in it than usual for some reason.
Does that mean you can leave early? 🙂
Lalique Encre Noire is the SOTD. A gift to a houseguest, so I thought I’d swipe a few sprays before he leaves. Perhaps better for Friday’s theme, but cedar-y and dry on this day before El Nino finally arrives.
sotd (on this very cold, suddenly winter day) Dior Mitzah
Delightful!
First day back at work from the holidays, but I’ve been sick the last week so vacation wasn’t so much fun. Still not feeling great – nasty chest cold, on top of which I got pinkeye as a bonus. So I haven’t been wearing much perfume the last week. Since I wanted to at least attempt feeling human today, I am wearing Histoires de Parfums 1826.
Hope you feel better soon!
Life is just full of bonuses like that! Hope you kick it soon ????
Ouch. No fun, but hope you’re on the mend. 1826 has been hanging out on my patchouli list for a while now. Do you like it?
I’m familiar with the chest cold – hope you make short work of it.
Tea for two early in the morning, just a tiny bit due to doctor’s appointments, etc. Might switch to something you have inspired after my bath. We had a clammy kind of snow, but now it’s damp and sunny.
I wore Eau de 1000 today, from a bottle I thought had turned. I recently spruced up my perfume storage space, and that one ended up near the front. I was showing off my new and improved presentation to a friend and fellow perfume lover, and she put some on despite my warnings. She thought it smelled great, and now I do too! It still doesn’t project/last the way I remember, but it is definitely better than it was back when I was trying to plan its disposal. I’m glad I stayed on the fence for so long. Now if I just had a buyer for the replacement bottle I no longer need!
1000 is like that, the top notes get very funky. And it wears differently each time, making judging it’s off-ness (?) that much harder.
Interesting! I’d thought maybe it was just me.
Happy Monday Everyone. Today was my first day back at work since the holidays. Only faculty and staff today and kids return tomorrow. My SOTD was Dark Amber and Ginger Lily.
Commando today, still with the chest cold. Slept a lot, made chicken soup & fresh juice, and am starting to feel stronger.
When I went out for oranges I found a scent strip in my purse for JM Orris & Sandalwood, which I sampled yesterday at Saks. Its nice, I guess, but I can’t get past the sense that the cool iris and warm sandalwood cancel each other out, resulting in a strangely neutral scent. Had the same reaction from 2 store samplings and the paper strip. Oh well.
Hope you feel better soon!
Still getting over my New Year’s cold, but today is the first day in a while I’ve tried wearing any perfume. And now I can tell you that Lush Lust will find its way through any case of head congestion. Powerful stuff!
SOTD = MFK Ciel de Gum
Woot! I have a sample from a dear perfumista friend. I’ll give this a second, more proper wearing tomorrow but it just got added to my Wish List (the others being Aftelier Vanilla Smoke and Roja Dove Haute Luxe (NOT the FB because $,$$$)).
