Monday scent of the day 1/4

Posted by Robin on 4 January 2016 236 Comments

Returning with flower for Taylor's Premium Cologne

The first Monday of 2016! Hope it is going well so far. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing L'Artisan Parfumeur Drôle de Rose, quite out of season.

Reminder: this Friday on 1/8 we're doing Woodfest Friday. Wear something woody — but no oud, because we already did oud! And don't forget, the damage poll is coming up next Tuesday!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am also out of season and wearing Gardenia Rattan, which Aerin Lauder intends to be a summer fragrance. However, I am continuing on with my resolution to try every scent in my collection of minis, coffrets, and discovery sets at least once before buying anything new. This was the first scent in the Aerin Lauder discovery set I bought late last year.

Wowww that is a good one. Ok. Gauntlet thrown. I will try to make some headway with my samples too. (Because I increasingly want to buy myself some Helmut Lang EDP, so, I guess I better hurry up with the samples!!)

I love Drôle de Rose, it almost makes fun of smelling pretty.
I’m also wearing a rose, but on the other side of the Rose-spectrum. I’m in Guerlain’s Nahéma. Quite a diva, but a good companion all the same on this gray day.

Are they discontinuing all forms or only the extrait? Either way, I really need to try this one soon! Can’t believe I haven’t yet, since I love Guerlain and roses.

From what I’ve read at Monsieur Guerlain, all of it. But you know how this goes…you hoard, then they bring it back. That said, if we see it again would guess it will be in more expensive / collector packaging.

Was it really selling that well? I didn’t think it was that popular so I can see why the discontinued it. Plus I read some where that its a fortune to make

I have to go to Disney Epcot for a quick weekend.
I say have to cause I really don’t enjoy it – BUT there is the Guerlain Pavillion to partake of. Last time a bottle of Bois d’ armanie came home with me. Maybe I should check out the Nahema situation.

SOTD = L’Artisan Oeillet Sauvage. It’s spicy, bright and somewhat sweet all at once. I love it. The holiday season was so busy (yet pretty lovely all the same) but I wanted to celebrate getting back into the swing of things in the new year.

    Happy Monday, everyone.

It’s really great on a cold day like today when I want floral but a bit spicy as well, and while it’s an edt, I can still smell hints of it a good seven hours later, even on my wrists which is usually the first place perfume fades on my fragrance devouring skin.

While I have been trying to decrease the number of bottles on my must buy list, I’m afraid I just have to add this one. It’s so lovely. 🙂

Sampling- started with Lab on Fire Made in Heaven vs Slumberhouse Pear and Olive extrait. Scrubbers! Into the purgatory basket! Destined for the freebie meet! Then tried Memo Siwa vs Hermes Iris Ukyoke (sp?). I am enjoying the Siwa as time passes. The Iris I admired greatly to begin with but now it is faded and wan compared to Siwa, which adorable hubbie is also commenting on favorably. Today we are going to see Star Wars in an Imax theater, 11:30 mattinee. I love long staycations-we are acting like teenagers!

I got a sample of Made in Heaven which I was strangely attracted to initially, but it became grating(that dusty Cap’n Crunch note).
Saw Star Wars this weekend-3D but not IMAX. I’m sure IMAX will make it even more fun! Great nostalgia. Enjoy!

Jada’s 1st Fragrance surprise of 2016: Drugstore scents can be quite lovely!

SOTD: Vera Wang Embrace: Periwinkle and Iris.

    So, what had happened was….
I was in Walgreens, looking for discounted Christmas chocolate. Chocolate is very important to my happiness and daily doses are required. Right next to the candy clearance were a bunch of 50% off fragrance sets, so of course I had to take a look see. I ended up snagging each of these sets for $10 each….(they have perfume, shower gel, and lotion)

    1. Embrace Periwinkle and Iris
    2. Embrace Green Tea and Pear Blossom
    3. Guess Girl (for my oldest girl’s Valentine gift!)
    4. Katy Perry Royal Revolution (for my youngest girl’s Valentine’s gift)
    5. Eau de Gaga….gonna give this one away! It got good reviews, but I hate it!

So anyhoo….The Embrace scents are definitely run of the mill sweet florals, but very easy to wear and office friendly. The bath gels are great! Don’t know yet about Guess Girl and Katy Perry….they are hidden away until Valentines…..

HAPPY MONDAY! Back to work, and back in the groove!!

Angel Liqueur de Parfum 2013: the candy sweetness dialled back, the darkness really amped up, and there might even be a bit of tobacco in there. Is it the best of all the many, many Angels? I really think it is.

Wearing Chanel No 22 to help drag myself to the office for the first time since before Christmas. The burst of aldihydes followed by the gorgeous creamy bouquet is helping. My train being delayed for an unknown amount of time is not (thanks, CTA!).

I may go for it! The scent is enchanting me this morning.

The other bottles I want are Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan and Amouage Beloved (and maybe Ormonde Jayne Champaca, but I want to test it a couple more times). I may end up with both the Chanel and the Hermes, since visiting the boutiques would be a fun gift to myself during my final week in Chicago. This year I want to focus on a small number of special bottles, so this would be a good start. 🙂

Wearing quite a fun combination today – TF Black Orchid body lotion with Lush Stayin Alive. When I put on the lush this morning my husband asked if he was imagining it or could I smell toffee apple! So for those of you interested in smokey, sweet toffee and apple this is a good one – also it’s really not super sweet.

Bizarrely, it seems to end up losing the leather (right wrist only– it’s so weird when my wrists end up smelling different) and changing into whipped cream. Like the leather and like the cream but it’s a peculiar evolution.

Big day back at work. I was inspired to wear the scent that I chose for luck/wealth/health/etc. in the new year, so it’s 24 Faubourg for me today. The weather is cold enough that it smells great and really warm.

Tomorrow should be cold too, so I’ll break out something I haven’t worn for ages. Already used up 2 samples of my 3 for the month–Iris Silver Mist and Chanel 19. Both lovely. Would consider larger decants of both.

Nowhere near as cold here as it is elsewhere (witness cazaubon’s minus-25 above) – here in Portland we have temps hovering right at freezing, streets that are literal ice-rinks, and schools closed for the day. I’m getting ready to log in to my computer at work (ahh, modern technology), but wanted to check in here first. I’m in Tom Ford Violet Blonde today – love it so much, and think it would be a great candidate for Woody Friday this week.

Going to be in the car all day today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. I’m wearing a generous smear of Salome anyway because it makes me feel glamorous. A very nice waitress made my day yesterday by gushing about how beautiful I the thought I was, so the remaining high from that and the Salome are helping to counteract my unwashed hair and grubby crazy-cat-lady hoodie. I really need to get over myself and tell people when I think they are gorgeous. I’m always afraid I’ll come across as a creep, but I shouldn’t care.

I have occasionally been swept up into complimenting someone (their hair, their coat, their smile, whatever) and then felt sort of bashful afterwards. No one has ever given me a dark look for it, though, so I don’t think the impulse was unappreciated!

MM,mi’m a speed complimented– if I see something that I think is wonderful- a baby with red hair, a pretty dog, or a lovely combination of colours, even the silk-tie-pocket-handkerchief on a dapper chap– and it seems to me that people have made an effort to present themselves to the world just so (not the baby, of course, that’s just one of nature’s accidental glories), then I dash up, say what I think, and keep walking. I think that people who have clearly pulled themselves together deserve the compliment, and though they’re surprised, they always begin to smile. I never see the end of the smile, because I have beetles off, but I think they like it. So, if you feel moved, do it. The world turns better that way.

I wear glasses and have a tendency to zero in on other wearers’ frames…am constantly complimenting people on their great glasses. The woman at Lush has bright red but nerdy Ray Bans …so cool. I reckon spontaneous compliment giving is fine ….but beware overthought or fake OTT type compliments (ugh). Perfume compliments are best.

I’m fairly comfortable admiring someone’s accessories or clothing, but making a personal observation is different. I think that what made the waitress’ comments so nice and un-skeevey was her sincerity and I’m not sure I could convey that. Shyness is easily misinterpreted as insincerity.

    SNOW DAY!
    * . * . * . * . * . *
    * . * . * . * . * . *
    . * . * . * . * . * .

Woke up with Portland covered in a pretty snow yesterday morning. Now it is a not-as-pretty sheet of ice. So, thankfully, in a rare moment of forward-thinking, my school district cancelled school for today yesterday evening. I will probably venture out at some point with my camera in hopes of seeing something pretty.

Can’t decide if I want to stick with the winter theme of the day and wear L’eau d’Hiver–appropriately getting so much love by the community these days!–or wear something warm and cozy, like Tolu. Well, you can all see I have a difficult and strenuous day ahead of me!

There are some for whom the heliotrope is too powdery/ sweet, but I have never found it to be so. I *do* wish it was a bit BIGGER; it’s a bit subtle for my usual preferences, but so pretty and unusal, I try not to hold that against it!

It’s cold but bright and sunny here in the DC area. The cherry blossoms bloomed again this year, so I will head out shortly to say goodbye to them until they (hopefully) reappear in the spring.

I’m sampling TF Fleur de Chine. Or rather, was. It’s fading fast, so I’ll probably re-spritz in massive quantities later. I thought for sure I would be smitten, but thus far I’m … not. The weird thing is that I don’t know what is bothering me about it, and the first thing that popped into my head once the initial blast died down was “I think this is supposed to be jasmine here but it is only representing jasmine.” Maybe some sort of aromachemical thingie? I often get the same response to rose and can get rather indignant about it. Rose? This is not rose! It is an impostor! 😉

I actually looked this up, Robin! I was concerned that this late fall/early winter flowering would prevent them from flowering again in the spring or put stress on them. According to what I’ve read, the cherry trees that DC is famous for are a particular variant that flowers in autumn if the climate is warm enough during that season. They are Prunus subhirtella autumnalis. I’ve seen them referred to as Tokyo Higan, Higan (Prunus incisa) , or a cross between that and mamekazura (Prunus pendula.) There’s a ton more info online, but I think I’m in tmi territory already! 🙂

Hello, all. I’m late starting the day, but I decided to embellish it with a couple of sprays of Beloved, just to get myself going. This is gorgeous, monte resting stuff, and I think will have to be my next serious full bottle purchase. I’m always surprised at the degree of skank it produces on my skin: others find it more ladylike, I think. It settles into a beautiful, well-integrated floral hum after about 45 minutes, much to my dear man’s dismay. He clearly likes the opening….I’m wondering whether to wear it today to coffee with a friend. She has bad news to tell me (I think I’ve guessed it) and it might be all wrong. But then, what would be right?

(That said, I haven’t smelled Beloved so I don’t know if it’s skanky in a way that stays close, or if it’s more diffusive. Either way, it does sound v interesting to me, I’ll have to give it a test. Oh! Maybe both of us need to hurry up on it? Am I wrong to think it’s being discontinued?)

I also wondered. It sounds interesting and whatever it is, it will be made fabulous with Beloved. I don’t get a skanky note with Beloved, just a lovely, rich perfume.

Hope things are OK for your friend.

I thought that I would love this scent and was surprised that I didn’t. I wonder if all of the flash scent have that über sweet quality? At least to my nose. It kind of reminds me of Rose jam.

Guerlain will have my head when they hear that it reminds me of Dove’s limited edition Wintercare soap and shower cream hahaha but it does. Ditto ….Malle’s L’eau d’hiver …

I had a weird perfume-shopping dream last night (…as one does 😉 ) and woke up feeling indignant there aren’t more rose and leather scents. Can anyone recommend one? I suppose Kelly Caleche is the closest I’ve got but sometimes I’m not in the mood for grapefruit. Should I try the Kerosene? What else is out there? (For what it’s worth–and to be just unabashedly demanding about it!–I want it to smell like either rough-hewn or polished leather, but not like suede or patent leather.)

Hm. Have you tried Papillon Tobacco Rose? There’s no leather, but the smokey hay and moss base give it a rough-hewn feel. Also, a review somewhere mentioned that it’s a rose to wear with a leather jacket (I concur!). 🙂

C.H., I think SheriG layers Cuir Mauresque with Rose Anonyme to get the rose-leather effect. I haven’t tried the combo yet but will…soon.

One does, and now that you’ve pointed it out, I share your indignity. A quick search brought up Rosine Rose d’Homme and Montale Rose Leather, neither of which I’ve tried. L’AP lists both in Traversée du Bosphore but it doesn’t quite fit the bill (IMO.) I do get a hint of leather in Misia, but that might just be me.

First day back to work since before Christmas. Has been an all out assault on my Inbox and office phone since 8:30am. Finally had to walk away if only for a brief lunch break. Overwhelm is the author of the ill-advised email reply, lol.

Just glad I reached for Prada Amber this morning. Has radiated some badly needed warmth, despite the 31F windchill going on outside- dang cold for South Carolina. And it’s managed to keep me calm and centered- ish (as much as a non-doctor prescribed substance can at this point).

I spent a couple of hours ambling around the streets yesterday as part of my scent map project. Some horrors: onion grass. Some delights: two metre high Himalayan Lillies in full bloom ….but only a giant would be tall enough to smell them (a vanilla scent apparently ). Biggest surprise: (kerbside) bottle recycling day, the first since Christmas. It appears I live in a wine and Champagne guzzling neighbourhood and the scent of wine/grape kept reaching me. So what perfumes have good wine notes? Champagne is the only one I know so research is needed. I have never really noticed wine perfumes ….a thin, sharp note compared to the cognac, rum , whisky scents? Any suggestions gratefully received. Off to the local graveyard today …for late roses.

Moan groan grumble, first day back to work after 10 days off. Why am I not retired yet??? Why did I not win the lottery over the break??? …I reached for 31 Rue Cambon, thinking it would be just the thing but it somehow smelled wrong for the day (didn’t think that was possible!) So I diverted to Armani Prive Ambre Soie which is just right.

Like SheriG and MarjorieRose, I’m in the ice rink that is Portland this morning. I had to leave my car parked 10 miles away last night when the roads got so icy it wasn’t safe to drive any longer. I took mass transit home and will do the same in reverse once it warms up enough that the ice turns to slush.

In the meantime, I’m sampling Rania J. Ambre Loup, a warm amber with spices added. I don’t know if it will knock Ambre Precieux off the pedestal in my inner rankings of ambers, but it’s very nice on this cold day.

I’m in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Amouse Bouche today. This one languished in my purgatory basket for a long time, and I’m liking it more this go ’round. A nice blast of sweet jasmine to start, and then the long, slow strawberry pastry dry down… but it does a weird, plasticky thing in between for a short while, where it reminds me of the smell of a Strawberry Shortcake doll. Still, it feels cozy on this rainy day!

I have a languishing sample of Amouse Bouche too. I want to like it but for me it’s all strawberry Poptart. I didn’t get the jasmine when I tried it but honestly didn’t wear it long enough to get to the mid plastic doll notes. I’m glad you are enjoying it more. I should try it again now that it is colder.

Lalique Encre Noire is the SOTD. A gift to a houseguest, so I thought I’d swipe a few sprays before he leaves. Perhaps better for Friday’s theme, but cedar-y and dry on this day before El Nino finally arrives.

First day back at work from the holidays, but I’ve been sick the last week so vacation wasn’t so much fun. Still not feeling great – nasty chest cold, on top of which I got pinkeye as a bonus. So I haven’t been wearing much perfume the last week. Since I wanted to at least attempt feeling human today, I am wearing Histoires de Parfums 1826.

I wore Eau de 1000 today, from a bottle I thought had turned. I recently spruced up my perfume storage space, and that one ended up near the front. I was showing off my new and improved presentation to a friend and fellow perfume lover, and she put some on despite my warnings. She thought it smelled great, and now I do too! It still doesn’t project/last the way I remember, but it is definitely better than it was back when I was trying to plan its disposal. I’m glad I stayed on the fence for so long. Now if I just had a buyer for the replacement bottle I no longer need!

1000 is like that, the top notes get very funky. And it wears differently each time, making judging it’s off-ness (?) that much harder.

Commando today, still with the chest cold. Slept a lot, made chicken soup & fresh juice, and am starting to feel stronger.

When I went out for oranges I found a scent strip in my purse for JM Orris & Sandalwood, which I sampled yesterday at Saks. Its nice, I guess, but I can’t get past the sense that the cool iris and warm sandalwood cancel each other out, resulting in a strangely neutral scent. Had the same reaction from 2 store samplings and the paper strip. Oh well.
