Thursday scent of the day 12/10

Posted by Robin on 10 December 2015 228 Comments

Madonna for Versace

It's Thursday-almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Versace Versense.

Reminder: tomorrow, wear a perfume by Pierre Bourdon, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Madonna for Versace, I think from 2005.

I’m interested in this one. Where would you say it falls on the wide spectrum of amber perfumes?

In the soft and cuddly spectrum. You might want to read Kevin’s review, very apt and very funny. He liked it too.

I’m guessing that it is, but I enjoy sweet, especially PdN sweet. I find it less sweet than her Sacrebleu and Kiss me Tender.

Wearing Galaad by Lubin. A sexy and slightly spicy leather. Apparently this pine was polarizing but I adore it. They seem to do a very good job.

I’m a bit on a pusher kick since Pixel sent me a sample…but my fave pine and spice scent (there could be leather?) is Yatagan. I wore it last night in fact. If you have not tried it and are interested, I have a massive bottle and would be happy to share.

Not sure if I am the first one this morning in Champagne de Bois. I’m not sure if anyone is interested but there are some nice sales going on at Min New York. Look under the sales pages. I saw Mohur EDP, Equistris, Azemour Les Oranges for half price! Many others too.

and Gilt has those attractive Kilian perfume compact solids today. They’re appealing, but solids don’t do much for me. Will have to take a look at Min.

Has anyone tried the solids? I’m tempted but hesitating because I don’t have a great sense of what their solids are like… beyond just, is the scent any different? I also realize I have no idea how long a 0.25 oz solid lasts, really–so $50 seems like a relatively good price, for a Kilian, but I suppose I don’t really know what I’m getting for $50…

In related news, I ducked out for lunch and to give these another sniff…and the Kilian rep doused me without asking. Including my wool dress :( Not great.

You weren’t too late. I was up later than usual because my fine strainer has gone missing (no doubt used for some gross non-kitchen project and discarded without my knowledge), the cheesecloth stash is empty (probably suffered the same fate), and I was carefully separating a huge pot of chicken stock from the little floaty bits. I checked NST to unwind and, voila!
I am really kicking myself now for not getting the Mohur, but I was trying to be reasonable.

It’s worth it. That stuff is gorgeous. Rich without being overpowering and good for all seasons. The slightly bitter greenness at the opening and then the most gorgeous vanilla after that. I bought a FB of it 5 or 6 years ago and will probably get another one when I finish it.

We’ve had such oddly warm weather this year! Not that I’m complaining. It’s nice not wading in snow for a change. I didn’t even need my heavy coat this morning.

I’m trying Panorama by Olfactive Studio. When I first sprayed it on it immediately reminded me of the lot where I bought my xmas tree. It’s all citrusy-conifer fresh in that newly-cut wood sort of way that’s really soothing and makes me smile. I even thought I smelled mint! So far, I’m really liking it. (Thanks to Annikky for the sample!)

After yesterday’s discussion of Cuir de Lancome and Cuir de Russie, I’ve decided to put one on each wrist to compare them throughout their development. CdL is still not sweet on me, though now I’d like to smell it on C.H. to experience this cupcake leather she is talking about – sounds interesting!

This experiment reminds me of another that the GoddessRena and LizzieB and I tried together with Rose Rebelle Respawn. We each sprayed it on our wrists at Twisted Lily and watched as the scent evolved to be a completely unique thing on each of us. If I recall correctly, GoddessRena’s became all about chocolate, LizzieB’s was rather green, and mine turned rosy. A vivid reminder that it really does come down to your own skin chemistry.

I know it may not be the case for others, but my experiences of CdL and CdR respectively continue to parallel each other, though they are decidedly not the same. CdR is more assertive but still has a kind of soft floralcy to it. CdL is cozier but again, not sweet.

      I’m here for a side-by-side test any time! :)

Or perhaps more easily (but not as fun as testing together!), I could put a bit of my sample on paper and see if it smells the same to me–at least that way we could narrow down whether it’s skin differences or nose/neuron differences!

Wearing Cristallo di Rocca today….the almond is nice, but one of the notes is getting on my nerves. Maybe it will settle down in a few….

Was out shopping last night with my oldest teen (age 14), and we had fun sniffing at the Belk counter. Fave sniffs were Si, Black Cashmere, and Calyx. The kid is definitely a budding perfumista too….

Yeah, it has a special meaning for me, long story.:) but it’s funny, first time I wore it I asked my husband what he thought, he said I smelled like I just opened a can of Dr. Pepper! Now every time I wear it, in the first few minuets that what I pick up. I wonder if violet could be one if the 23 flavors?

    Good morning, all!
I have another day of meetings (and a sub in my room all day), so I have a moment to say howdy. Wearing Lipstick Rose, from my toybox, but only because I can–got a big ol’ vat of this beauty in the perfume cabinet. Speaking of which–it’s *really* busting at the seams. If I love that bottle of Beloved coming my way, I’m not sure where it will get stored! Mr. Spicebomb, the sweetie, suggests the clear solution is a bigger perfume cabinet. Such a good man! :D

Yeah, like all Ateliers, the lasting power is not great. Although today I can still smell it if I press my nose to my elbow. Impressive since I sprayed it around 8 this morning. It fades much faster in warmer weather. I would not purchase a full bottle of this one, but am happy to use up my 7.5 mL extra large sample.

I retried a sample of Kenzo Flower last night at bedtime, and liked it well enough that I’m wearing it again today. It’s a little odd when first sprayed, but it settles into a lightly spiced woody floral.

Chanel 5 EDP- I have so many samples of this it *may* constitute a full bottle. I keep a couple at work and spritz in the bathroom. So our work bathroom smells really nice!

I’m wearing my mystery scent that claims to be Elixir des Mervailles. Still not convinced. This is the second time I’ve worn it, and there is a very fleeting stage where it smells like cigarettes and leather, but not in an off putting way, more like a “last night was awesome” kind of way.

Costume National Scent Intense is my ‘last night was so awesome there was no sleep to be had’ hot drunken summer nights scent. Considering there are so many ‘I’m on my way to a board meeting’ scents out there (and in my collection) I think it fills a very important gap in my collection :)
Strange about the EdM though.. to me it’s just a sweeter version of EaudM. Do you have some to compare?

I love scents like that! You put it very well. Sometimes you just need a perfume like this to add intrigue to your day. It makes me want to wear black and striking jewelry and act like a rock star. I’ll have to try Costume Natural Scent Intense some time.

I have a carded sample of EdM on the way to compare. If this is not EdM, and I’m pretty sure it’s not, I’ll have to backtrack to Sephora and hunt down what it actually is, because I do like it. I watched the guy pull down the bottles I asked for, but it was really busy that day, and a couple of other bottles were sitting on the counter, so he might have gotten mixed up. Once I get it figured out, I will share what it actually is.

Robin – That is entirely possible! The Sephora I went to had Elixir, Ambre, and Eau des Merveilles on the shelf together. I can see how he might have grabbed the wrong one.

“More like a ‘last night was awesome’ kind of way” — haha ok now I must know what this really is :) Do you have any local perfumistas you could ask to smell it? Sometimes people will be able to identify stuff at first sniff–or otherwise Sephora trial-and-error comparison, though perhaps that might be time-consuming!

One way or another I’m going to figure out what this is. The Sephora I went to has a medium sized collection, so I’ll sniff and eliminate if I have to. But Robin might well be on to something, with the suggestion of it possibly being Ambre instead of Elixir. When I get it figured out, I will definitely share with everyone what it really is.

Sure! It’s a spicy, creamy oriental with a lot of citrus — kind of reminds me of eggnog. Bears some similarity to Musc Ravageur, also by Roucel, but much louder and brighter.

I don’t think there was much fanfare surrounding the launch. I never saw it in any stores and had to (haha, “had to”) blind-buy it online. It’s polite and quiet, like you might expect. The spices are cool, and definitely more prominent than the rose. It’s my favorite Marni incarnation, but I also think it functions better as a pretty, no-brainer scent, rather than a statement or conversation piece. I like wearing it, and I like wearing a lot of it, but I have a feeling that after a few minutes, it’s not strong enough for anyone else to notice.

Ok. My choice today is weird considering it is cold and rainy outside. I put on Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel – you see my shower is broken and my ablution attempts are at best rudimentary.

I’m clean enough but yearning for that extra splash of freshness modern plumbing provides, hence cologne. I wanted cologne that is not necessarily a citrus story.

The fact that my bottle is a 15ml splash made it all the more satisfying!

Of the three, I think Voyage is by far the safest to buy blind–it’s much easier-going than the other two, IMO. So it may not be as life-changing but nor do I think there’s much risk you’ll really hate it!

Enjoy, and let us know how it wears on you, I’m v curious–I hear some people get more incense and less suede than I did.

I’ve had some crazy-busy days recently and have barely had time to read NST, let alone post. Today I drained the last of my tiny sample of La Fille de Berlin. If a bottle fell into my possession I wouldn’t say no, but I don’t think it’s something I’ll buy. (I think I’ve bought 4 bottles in the last couple of weeks, which is unheard-of for me.)

Yesterday I smelled a scent on my scarf, and thought, “I wish someone would develop an app like Soundhound but for scent. Then I could tell what this was.” Get on that, coders!

SOTD Diptyque EI Jasmine from a sample I got with a candle purchase. I really like this one. Full-bodied but not bombastic like Lush Lust.
I bought my niece a travel spray of En Passant yesterday, but now wondering if it’s too “mature” for a 21 yo. She asked me about getting a perfume for herself and said she liked lilac. She’s pretty mature and understated so thought she might like it. Now I’m thinking I should give her samples to try and buy her what she likes. I haven’t sent it yet. I’m interested in all your opinions on this one, and your experiences of buying perfume for other people since I haven’t done that yet.

I’m not familiar with En Passant, but I think it really depends on your niece. I wore perfumes that might be classified as mature when I was in my early twenties. Given the way you described her, I think she might be open to something like that. I also think that she might appreciate that it’s different, and not what her friends are likely to be wearing. It’s a great opportunity for her to benefit from your knowledge of perfumes that aren’t displayed at Sephora.

I think En Passant would be lovely on a young woman, and I haven’t found any lilac fragrances that smell as nice. The only drawback I see is the price–you will have to be the generous aunt who keeps her supplied if she likes it!

The travel size isn’t too badly priced if she needs more, but I’m afraid I can’t guarantee a lifetime supply. She’s a college senior so hopefully will find work(although she wants to be an actress so maybe not).

I experience En Passant as a light, fresh floral which would be completely appropriate on a 21 y.o., in my opinion. But I was wearing Shalimar at 15, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

:-) I wouldn’t buy her Shalimar just yet. I also think it’s light and inoffensive and just pretty if you like lilacs. I should send it before I keep it myself ;-) I think it just made me second guess my choice when the SA seemed to want to steer me away from that one.

Meh, I don’t think the SA’s right about this one–I don’t think it’s overly mature, I find En Passant really romantic actually, which is sorta spot on for a 21 year old budding actress, IMO :)

That said, I’m always super, super nervous about buying perfume for someone else–I mean even for myself, tons of things I think I will like turn out to be total busts. Even tougher to say for certain what someone else will dig… Meanwhile I think sampling could be a really nice experience for you guys to share–I would have loved it if one of my aunts had a cool hobby she wanted to share with me! Assuming that’d be something you would enjoy, talking about the samples with her, I think sending some options for her to try could be a great thing to do.

He was recommending Lys Mediterrane which *I* thought was too mature. I would love to do the sample bonding thing! But the reality is she’s super involved with school, friends, improv groups etc that she’s hard to pin down.

          • C.H. says:
            10 December 2015 at 4:39 pm

Oh I really agree–Lys is pretty formal! En Passant is way more approachable. And good point about college students not having a ton of availability. Hm–well, you could send just the one En Passant sample and tell her if she likes it, you’ll send more? That way it’s not so involved, but, you can still make sure the En Passant purchase won’t be wasted?

          • Elisa P says:
            10 December 2015 at 4:42 pm

I also don’t like or love most of what I try so it’s definitely taking a risk, but well calculated., I think. I actually had never tried En Passant on skin before yesterday because I’m not drawn to soliflors. I’m surprised by how much I like it! I could tell her to send it back my way if she doesn’t like it ;-) I think I’ll just send it, otherwise I’ll overthink this.

My wallet just took a big hit because I had to have a temporary crown put in. I just got back from the dentist and on reading what everyone is buying right now, I know I have to back away. Can’t afford to buy anything until next payday. Anyway, I’m wearing Un Jardin Arpres la Mousson for the first time. It is really working for this warm, late fall day.

It’s so not fun spending money on dental work. One way to cut spending is to lose your bank card, like I did yesterday, and get a temp card that can’t be used for online purchases, and wait 7-10 days for a new card! I also need to be cautious because our car is on the brink of death and we may need a new one. Why does life need to get in the way of our need for perfume(throws tamtrum)?

Hello to all. Today is grey and sad so I I’ve wrapped myself up in the golden glow of Sublime. I’m working at home again, Dakkie and Isabella are keeping me company at the computer, and together we’re knocking off all the little bits and pieces of admin and follow ups and dreary memos and annual reports and all the mere STUFF that seems to adhere to me these days. Sublime helps. So does the fact that tomorrow we’re going up north to Whangarei, my home. It’s only 100 or so miles from Auckland, but it might as well be another country altogether: softer, warmer, slower. The sea will be deep teal because it’s still cold from winter, and the pohutukawa will be hazy with their red flowers for Christmas; the friends will be old, the laughter real, the silences easy. Oh, and I might do a little shopping at my favourite store in the whole world.

Oh, coming late-ish to the game but Robin if you see this, I’d be so curious to hear how you’re liking wearing the Versense today! Or even what prompted you to pull it out, I know that when you reviewed it, it seemed fresher than you were inclined toward? (I’m particularly interested because I’ve got a bottle that I go back and forth on myself…)

Literally came across it while looking for something else, and just thought why not? It is *still* fresher than I like, but a more-than-decent scent, and I totally see why someone would love it. If I had a bottle I’m sure I would wear it from time to time.

Also, not sure if they still make it, do you know? If not, there is literally NOTHING in the feminine Versace line up that I like.

Oh you know, I hadn’t realized but it seems you’re right–d/c’ed. Kohl’s is the only department store where I still see it and otherwise the discounters seem flooded with it… Well I suppose I won’t get rid of my bottle then, if it’s soon to be irreplaceable ;) (I agree entirely with your assessment, not the most substantive scent but nor is it half bad, def has a certain appeal–though sometimes I find that appeal just a little cloying, like the scent version of an overly catchy pop song that starts to be a little grating. So I’d stopped wearing it for a while, until I smelled it on someone else in yoga and went–wait, I wish I had that on right now! And frankly a light-woods-and-citrus take on a mall-scent-y kind of thing: really one could do much worse. So I’ll hold onto my bottle–conveniently I also do like really like the physical object! Much more than some of their other bottles…)

Meanwhile, in terms of women’s scents, I hadn’t even noticed this Gianni Versace Couture line they’re doing–have you had a chance to smell any of those? Though of course, at the pricepoint, hardly a mainstream women’s offering!

I never did smell (or even see) any of those, and now I can’t even remember if I ever read any opinions on them either.

The bottle is quite nice, and so much better than the other Versace bottles (Bright Crystal and what not).

And this reminds me that I’ve been meaning for ages to go find a tester of The Dreamer and see if it’s still any good. It must be reformulated and reformulated again by now.

It’s the only one I would consider paying Le Labo prices for, so I guess I’m lucky it was so limited edition that my pocketbook will be spared. I snagged a decant when STC had it on special and did a little happy dance.
It’s a really pretty spicy green geranium-y floral. It isn’t a challenging scent, and I’m sorry they haven’t added it to the permanent line because it would probably do well. Somehow, it reminds me of some of the discontinued mainstream scents of the late nineties that nobody appreciated until they were gone. Not one in particular, it just has that feel to me. Like something I sniffed in a high-end boutique circa 1998. Wish I could give a better description, but it is unlike anything else I have in my collection.

    SOTD = Le Galion Iris

Sheer rooty iris that started out citrusy, softly floral and slightly soapy. The drydown is ambery and has more body. Overall, very well done. I will wear this more in the spring although with our unusually warm winter, it actually feels like early spring!

Re: Versace Versence – this was one of my pre-perfumista buys and I don’t recall how it is on me. This almost got included in the donation pile but some inner sense (urmmm, no pun intended) made me keep it. I look forward to renewing my acquaintance with this in the spring…or I may bring a decant on my shortish vacation at the end of the year.

*Very* late to the party here, I know. SOTD was Aftelier Bergamoss, which was a blind buy. I don’t usually blind buy any more, but it is limited edition, and I figured if I didn’t like it, I could swap it away.

The name pretty much sums it up. I smell the bergamot and the oakmoss distinctly. There are other notes listed, but they seem to be merely supporting players. This is essentially a straight-up, old-fashioned chypre, with real oakmoss. If you love chypres, and have been lamenting their demise, buy this!

For me, it is like but not love. Chypres have always been difficult for me. Unless they are enriched with a good dose of floral and/or animalic notes, I tend to find them a little too severe, like a very fitted, tailored suit–admirable in construction, and terrific on the right woman, but not me.

What I do love, however, is the size and the price, $60 for a lovely, sleek 9 ml spray that fits beautifully in a handbag. I wish she would offer all her EdP’s in this size.

Three cheers for the 9ml sprays! And thanks for your take on Bergamoss, indeed I’d been wondering if I should buy it blind…

How are things on your end, meanwhile? Have been thinking of you, and hoping things calming at least. How’s your kitty?

I’m hanging in there and hoping that life will be nice and boring for a while. Work has been crazy. I missed quite a few days in November; I was on a stay-at-home vacation when my mother passed away, then I got several more days off for the Death in Family benefit, then there was Thanksgiving. Ever since I got back to work, I have been playing catch up. I wish I could sleep through the night. I am writing this at 4 AM because I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. I am about to try to see if I can get a couple more hours of sleep now before I have to get up for work.

The kitty is about the same. He can’t walk, as his left hind leg won’t support him, so he drags himself around. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, though. We have everything he needs–food, water, and a litter box–in the same room where he stays so he doesn’thave to go far. I don’t know what to do. If he would get better and be able to get around, that would be great. On the other hand, if he just went quietly in his sleep, I would be OK with that. If he were in a great deal of pain, I could make the call to have him euthanized. I just can’t bring myself to do it if he is not actually suffering.
