Thursday scent of the day 5/28

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2015 200 Comments

Cher for Marc Jacobs

Happy Thursday! We're almost to June. If you have a minute, do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

I'm wearing Marc Jacobs Daisy, mostly because I couldn't find my sample of Marc Jacobs Bang.

Reminder: tomorrow is Flirty Friday, and you can interpret that however you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Cher for Marc Jacobs, Fall 2015 campaign.

I must be on a vetiver kick… I’m not all that fond of this one but decided to wear it because it has been a long time. All I’m getting is mint, mint, and more mint.

Odd – I don’t get much mint. But I LOVE mint (and not, generally, vetiver) so that could explain some things. I get more piney-citrus peel (which I’ve always figured is the kunzea), with spice in the dry down.

I’m sampling Eau de Celeri again today and really hoping it lasts through the gym this time. The opening is nice (I might just have been in the perfect mood for it though) but I have missed the base notes the last two times. I wonder if it just quiets down or has my ADD begun to impinge on my perfume smelling?
That Cher picture is extra odd – even for Cher. Was she actually at the shoot or is she CG? Her face is creepy smooth (but I like the ice goth-y outfit).

Combined with the pale skin and work done, as a woman of a certain age I can’t imagine why anyone would plaster their hair down at such a sharp vertical line against their face. At that age we don’t need to be reminded that objects are falling.

I asked to sample this in my last Twisted Lily order… I don’t know, I love green perfumes but this didn’t do much for me. Not as weird as I thought it’d be. (and no celery! at least on my skin)

Not weird or celeryish at all but very pleasant to me once I adjusted my expectations. It helps that it reminds me of vintage 4711 and O de Lancôme, both of which I’m a sucker for.

SOTD is box of eels … even though it is hot and humid here, I am in a training course in an over air conditioned room. This perfume can handle both fine. Love this stuff, glad I found another great sandalwood perfume but not so happy my want list is getting so long ;)

Also, I’m glad I chose comforting sandalwood today, as my boss has something “urgent” to tell me later today. With all the talk of cost cutting and rumors of layoffs – I’ll pretty much be a ball of anxiety until he gets around to telling me whatever it is he has to tell me.

So my totally useless opinion is that if you are planning to lay someone off, you do not prep them by telling them you have urgent news to share with them—the news may be urgent for the teller, but hardly for the receiver. So I think he has other urgent news about other people’s layoffs… or something else.

      Sigh.

Okay. I feel a tiny bit better.

Hope your day has a much better than expected end!!!!

My thought exactly. More likely someone else is getting the ax, and you’ll be shouldering some “new, important” responsibilities. Sorry for the negativity; corporate life does leave it’s scars.

On the positive side, every experience leaves us wiser and better prepared to craft the life we’re meant to live. Life is balance.

Me too! The opening reminds me of 4711 from the early eighties (that is high praise, BTW) now that the scent memory has finally clicked. I could happily walk around in a cloud of it and really will need at least a small spray decant some day. Maybe I’ll try the rest of my sample vial in the bath. I bet it would be heavenly.

It was one of my mom’s scents and the first I remember being allowed to wear. I dumped the rest of my sample into a little sprayer and re-applied after my workout. I may need a full bottle to bridge the gap between O de Lancôme and 4711 ;)

annawilde’s comment from yesterday reminded me that I should wear Rue Cambon today, for the press event I have to chair – in control, but approachable is the vibe I’m going for. If I want to project being in control without the approachable part, I usually go for No 19. And for “in control, but what a lovely, enthusiastic person!”, I’ll wear Cristalle. Chanel really does the best office scents, in my opinion.

I think so too Annikky, although I am very lucky to work from home in my own office most of the time! Still wearing a lot of 19, Cristalle and Eau Premiere. Bois des Iles is for winter, but lovely. Wore some 22 to bed, from a sample, lots and lots of aldehydes, and gorgeous incense dry down.

I really did love wearing it yesterday. Though I was running errands with the kids in ripped jeans and flip flops rather than chairing a press event ;) That’s one of the things I love about perfume; that you can wear a scent meant for a ball gown while schlubbing around town. And I agree about the Chanels; there’s one for every mood and every event!

A must try for oriental lovers!

Thus far, I haven’t even gotten to the scent of the day. But I am eagerly waiting for more Bal to arrive on my doorstep today. Since it will be in the 80’s, I think that I will wear Kyoto today.

My SOTD is Oscar de la Renta Oscar. I wore this a lot when I was a teenager in the 80s. I bought a bottle, and received it in the mail Tuesday. It’s not how I remember it. It’s still pleasant though.

    Its already Thursday — yay!!

I remember it as projecting more. I almost have to bury my nose into my wrist to smell it. I also remember it being more floral, more coco-nutty.

I don’t know if I’m remembering it incorrectly or if it has changed. Its still very pretty, and I think I’ll enjoy wearing it.

I was away traveling for a couple weeks and have now returned, but sadly, I have been sick for the majority of it and my sniffer appears to be completely off kilter. I returned to my office and tried a number of my scents and they’re all too sweet for me right now. Hopefully my usual tastes will return, but in the meantime, I am wearing a rose and peony-scented perfume oil from, of all places, Urban Outfitters. It was all of $28 and is one of the few scents I’m tolerating right now. Plus, it has all kinds of lovely oils that are great for the skin, and isn’t at all overpowering even when I’m covered in it. Definitely recommended as a nice summer scent and when you’re recovering from a cold.

Wearing Lostmarc’h Ael-Mat, which I wanted to compare to my sample of Metarboles (can’t remember name of company who does that one now). Metarboles has a nice minty thing going on in the beginning, but then turns into the top notes of Ael-Mat. Ael-Mat has now, about 4 hours after application, completely disappeared. And it was a bit sweeter than Metarboles, and never had the minty thing. Both good for summer/spring, but probably do not need full bottles of either.

SOTD is the extremely beautiful Mohur Extrait Parfum. I was gifted with a small bit of this, which I’m starting to think was a curse vs. a blessing now that I have fallen totally head over heals for it and the only purchase option is 50ml for $445…:(

Is there anything like it out there? Rose & sandalwood, but of really superb ingredients. What about the edp version? From what I’ve read it doesn’t seem like the extrait at all.

Is that one of STC’s house frags? How is it? Am wearing a sample of a natural today too–CBIHP Cradle of Light Absolute. Gorgeous jasmine, but fleeting (and I’m not a longevity fiend). Pretty as it is, can’t imagine shelling out for it.

Yes, it is the STC Surrender by Abdes Salaam Attar. His Tawaf is one of my favorite jasmines, so I knew I had to try Surrender.
Surrender is fresh, green and spiky. Some people find it animalic rather than indolic. I find it refreshing, a cool jasmine brightened by just a hint of anise/licorice. As is almost always the case with naturals, longevity is poor and sillage is minimal. I love Cradle of Light as well, and I agree with you, I wouldn’t shell out for it. I’ve only tested Surrender a couple of times, so ymmv. In general, I appreciate the Abdes stuff I’ve tried as he uses actual oakmoss, hyraceum, etc and in general it’s those heavy base notes that hold the natural fragrances together.

Silences isn’t for everyone. Heck, it isn’t even for me unless I’m in the right mood – then it’s perfect. I can see it not selling much as most who love it probably have several backups and it isn’t very like today’s mainstream stuff. It is a shame though ’cause I thought they had done better than usual with the reformulation.

In Bottega Veneta and enjoying it very much. I have two long meetings scheduled today about my younger son and I wanted something cheerful and elegant.

My son is not elegant, but he is cheerful!–This morning when I woke him up he was buried under the covers with his sleep apnea machine still roaring away… I finally got him to shut the thing off and take off his mask. Disheveled but smiling he said, “Well at least TGIF!” I had to tell him that it was not Friday but Thursday. “Arrgghhh!” he said and lay back down, cracking his head against his plastic breathing mask. For a second I thought he was going to cry, and then he just started laughing and laughing. “That’s okay,” he said. “It will be an alright day any way.”

Making me smile still… that and the Bottega Veneta.

Scent almost-twins! I’m wearing Bois d’Argent today, got my FB yesterday, yay! Ordered direct from Dior… nice samples, too, though I’m not sure what I’m meant to make of the ‘booklet’ of photos of Robert Pattinson sulking, errr, brooding, as he flogs Dior Homme. What-e-ver. :)

Do wish the Diors came in smaller bottles though. 125ml is quite more than enough…

Ooh yes, I hear that the Dior Boutique sends very cute minis when you order any Dior Privee from them… but I can’t use more than 30 ML of anything in my lifetime, so mine is from a split of one of those 450 ML vats. Loving the soft honey note in this. :)

I’m sampling Clinique Calyx today. It’s not half bad, though not as fizzy and green as I’d hoped. At least not on me.

Late, late, late! I hopped on my treadmill and started working this morning and have been so busy I forgot to fume myself! Gasp!

However, I’m gonna fix that tragedy right now with a spritz of Box of Eels :)

Happy Almost Friday Day to all.

Testing Agonist Isis on one hand and Jean Patou Sublime on the other. The Isis is just a gorgeous gourmand with citrus notes, nutmeg, amber and vanilla and might have to be my next FB. Sublime is kind of a retro floriental that seems to get better the longer it’s on. Have to test Isis on the hubby and kids.

I always get pineapple candy from Isis but my nose is notoriously unsophisticated :) It is really elegant pineapple candy though and I would certainly take a bottle if I could afford to buy everything I like. It is a scent that makes me smile.

I do dig Cher’s outfit in the pic, but all that surgery is making her look like an alien. Or maybe it’s just photoshop, who knows.

I’m wearing a DIY thing today. I was experimenting with some white champa (aka Chinese magnolia) oil that I had, and I tried combining it with tobacco and violet. It’s not bad, but I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. I like the stage it’s at now, but earlier in the day I was feeling a bit iffier. At one point the tobacco/violet combo with the sweet magnolia was making me think of blueberry candy.

Ditto on Cher’s looks. A pity, for such a great artist.

You know, thinking further on Jenkr’s Morticia Addams comment, with Cher being as visually-oriented as she is, and that photo being so carefully staged, I’ll bet this pic is a hint at an upcoming role. Wonder how recent the photo is.

Haie Fleurie. Love it in hot weather even more than in cooler weather and it’s 86 here. So satisfying
