Friday scent of the day 2/13

Posted by Robin on 13 February 2015 195 Comments

Guerlain Shalimar, Baccarat limited edition collector

Happy Guerlain Day! Our community project for today: wear something by Guerlain. We already did this in summer, now we're doing it again for winter (or, for some of you, the other way around).

As always, do chime in even if you're not wearing Guerlain.

I'm wearing a wee drop of vintage Shalimar extrait. But not, alas, from that bottle. I have a tiny sample and wear it a drop at a time.

Reminder: 2/20 will be One Hit Wonder Friday: wear something that is the only fragrance you really like by the brand, with partial credit for a fragrance that is the only one made by the brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

HELLO ALL I HAVE FINNALY DECIDED TO JOIN!

I AM A PERFUMER AND HAVE BEEN FOR 23 YEARS.

I KNOW EVEYONE IN THE INDUSTRY AND AM GONNA TELL IT LIKE IT IS.

There is nothing wrong with wearing multiple Guerlains so many smell perfectly beautifully together T
oday I am wearing vintage 1960’s Shalimar, and Vintage 1950’s mitsouko and Vintage 1910 Jicky. And a few dabs of vintage 1930’s Cuir de Russie. I think that it is horrible what has happened to Guerlains perfumes and all under some platform of it being better for us! I am so glad that last summer Therrry Wasser recreated 25 vintage perfumes from Guerlain called the Arc de Gueralin to show what the Guerlains really should smell like. The Guerlain Family were like to perfume The Great Renaissance Artists to painting and sculpture. Having these perfumes torn apart to shreds to fill the regulators pockets with more money is a load of you know what! I really hope Guerlain succeeds from LVMH and turns their museum of perfumes into a place where we can all go an buy the real Geurlain perfumes. I am like a Monument Man and this is all out war! What would have happened if all of those Botticelli’s where torched in fires by the Nazis. Well guess what that is what regulation is doing to one of the greatest houses of perfumery that ever existed. I say we all demand that we have out Guerlains back the way we want them. WHAT BROUGHT THIS ON!? I HAD TO BUY A BOTTLE OF SHALIMAR AND JICKY FOR WORK. Since I have been collecting perfumes since I was 14 I usually only wear vintage Guerlain. I WAS HORRIFIED BY WHAT I SMELLED. I RETURNED THEM. BUT THEY WONT REFUND MY MONEY SO I RETURNED THEM ANY WAY IN A SHOW OF DEFIANCE. I WILL BE BRINGING THIS UP WITH THE MANEGMENT OF LVMH IT IS CLEARLY NOT THE CHOICE OF THE GUERLAIN PEOPLE. THIS IS BEING FORCED UPON THEM. IT IS LUDICRISS. A VERY FAMOUS PERFUMER I KNOW SAID PERFUME IS MEDICINE FOR THE SOUL BUT SHE AND I AGREED THAT IF YOU CAN’T SMELL THE PERFUME THAT YOU KNOW ANBD LOVE THE WAY IT SHOULD SMELL IT IS NO LONGER MEDICINE FOR YOUR SOUL WE ARE BEING DONE A GREAT DISSERVICE AND FOR WHAT 1-2.5% OF THE POPULATION IS ALLERGIC TO PERFUME. WELL GUESS WHAT MAKE MORE PRODUCTS THAT ARE TRULY FRAGRANCE FREE. I AM FOLLOWING IN MADONNA’S FOOTSTEPS AND I AM GOING TO BE LIVING FOR LOVE AND IF THAT MEANS I HAVE TO MAKE SURE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU GETS THE OPORTUNITY TO WEAR A TRUE GUERLAIN SCENT I WILL. I AM AN UNAPLOGETIC B**CH AND PERFUMERS AND PERFUME IS UNDER PERSICUSION AND I WON’T STAND BACK AND WATCH IT ANY MORE!

SOTD is Shalimar EDT. By the way, I mentioned that I got a sample of Shalimar perfume a while ago … I was wrong! That’s what the sales lady told me but I wasn’t sure because she seemed confused when I talked about EDT vs EDP. Anyway, after a little sleuthing of bottles I think what she gave me was Shalimar Parfum Initial (which is the EDP). Haha! Silly me ๐Ÿ˜‰

I decided that Guerlain day was more important than being polite at the gym so am wearing a moderate amount of Vol de Nuit Parfum. They survived vintage Mitsouko once before and maybe I’ll clear a path, which would be fine since I’m really running late today and the serious weight lifters will be hogging the benches by the time we get there.
I smell wonderful but kind of wish I liked Shalimar so I could fit in. I just can’t do it.

I had real problems with Shalimar for a long time so do not give up! I bought a bottle of the Initial because a smelling strip of this fragrance was on my dining room table and every time I walked in the room I would wonder what wonderful thing I was smelling! See, caught completely off guard and so I was seduced. I have a vintage bottle of the EDC from the 1970s that is just lovely and smooth. The opening of the more modern Shalimar’s is just off-putting to me. Clearing space at the gym with perfume? Well played! I am still giggling…..

I haven’t forced the issue but I do feel sometimes like I’m missing out. There are lots of very important perfumes that I don’t like, and usually I don’t care, but Shalimar bugs me.
As for the gym, my husband has told me how good I smell twice now and nobody visibly recoiled from my sillage. I enjoyed biceps curls much more than usual since I had mostly applied on my arms.

      Are you listening, Guerlain/LVMH?

I chose Vol de Nuit, dabbed from a tiny vial. It’s nice, but I might need a bit more to get the full effect. I’m one of those for whom most Guerlains don’t work well, but VdN is a lovely exception. Happy Friday! Oh, and I meant to mention the Shalimar bottle image has given me serious bottle lust!

Wearing Apres L’Ondee today, since a small decant of that is my one and only Guerlain.

This is the second time I’ve worn it, and this perfume is SO not for me. It is venturing into scrubber territory. I put it on and get a blast of powder and something–I don’t know, maybe gasoline-y? It’s not really gasoline, but it gives me the same sick feeling I get when stopped at a gas station filling up a car–hideous, at any rate. Then after about 10 minutes it calms down to powder, some violets, and just awfulness. I didn’t like it the first time I wore it either, but wanted to give it a fair chance. Straight to the swap pile it goes, I know many of you love the stuff.

Hmm. Is this a modern or vintage bottle.
I tried a generous spray of the modern at a store, and the light violet smell evaporated immediately. However, there was a light rain when I went outside. As soon as the rain stopped, I a scent of crushed violet and wet dirt wafted up. It seems that for me at least, Apres L’Ondee really does mean a scent for after the rain.

This Gemini can finally be Your twin today,Robin! Shalimar vintage parfum. I found an unopened bottle still in its presentation box at an antique mall in Maine for 8 bucks. Luckily the dusty purple box looked pretty rough around the edges so probably didnt attract much interest till i got to it. The perfume was mostly evaporated thru the seal, but there were about 5 mls left.

Just read Erin’s excellent review of best winter perfumes and plan on a liberal application of Indochine later.

    Happy Friday the 13th everyone!

Wow, this Shalimar is making me feel like I’m a lady in an Erte illustration. Maybe because it’s old, but the development on it moves at a glacial pace. Smells like a spoon stirring a bowl of thick batter that’s made up of lemon, wood, spices, vanilla and mink coats.

One-Hit Wonder Friday sounds like fun. I think I have a couple to choose from for that.

I was planning on wearing Chamade today, but temperatures dropped yesterday and it’s 15F right now (I know, I know, lots of you have it colder, but two days ago it was 62 here). So. If I can find my small, almost-empty decant of Attrape-Coeurs, I’ll wear that. If not, Shalimar Light, which does not wear in any way “light” on me.

I never get bothered by incongruity between my attire and my perfume. ๐Ÿ˜€

But yes… Mount Sample indeed. I found my A-C, and while there’s very little left of it, it’s sweet and wonderful and rich. What I love best about it is the ambery base, which is unusual for me in that I don’t often love amber. (I think the best part of Mitsouko is the ambery drydown, too.)

Attrape-Coeur, from my tiny stash. Still lovely, still not me. I’m in jeans and oversized sweatshirt today, and now this feels really incongruous.

I was determined to wear A-C for Guerlain winter challenge, and scaled Mount Sample several times to find it. I hate it when I can’t lay hands on the sample I want. There are too many unorganized little vials in bags and drawers, scattered about my home. It’s a nice problem to have, hundreds (eek, maybe thousands!) of choices. Be well.

Not sure why I wasn’t wearing Guerlain all week, but I brought out the magic sauce today. Wearing vintage Shalimar parfum (probably what I wore on the previous Guerlain day, too).

I normally wear the current EDP and sometimes forget how absolutely amazing and also how different the vintage parfum is.

My little Guerlain samples are at home, so I thought I’d try Balenciaga Paris, and it’s leaving me kind of cold. I don’t *dislike* it, but it looks like violet doesn’t tend to excite me either way.

Thus, some warm and cozy Santal Carmin that I received from Hajusuuri….delicious.

Also – how do all of you keep track of what you want to try next, etc? I’m guessing there are a lot of spreadsheets involved, but maybe others use different methods.

I have hundreds of untested samples so sometimes it’s rather random. Other times I read a review (or even a forthcoming announcement)and if it is a brand carried locally I’ll make an excursion to go try it. If I read about something but can’t get it locally then it goes on my mental sample buying list

I have a spreadsheet to keep track of what I have (which really needs to be updated) and my thoughts for what I have tried. Also, pinterest. I have a board called aromatic elixirs for any perfume that I want to try … I just looked, there are 356 pins! Heh.

Ooooh….and now that I’ve sprayed a bit of Santal Carmin over the Balenciaga, the combination of violet and sandalwood remind me a bit of Nirvana Black, and I like it! I guess I just need to combine violet with other things for it to be compelling to me.

Hi ihadanidea! There’s a app that I’m loving called Wunderlist and I’ve created a list (one of many) to keep track of perfume’s I want to try. Works for me!

ps. enjoying Bulgari The Vert and hubby is not loving it, but not hating it, so that’s good progress

I nave to check out the app! When I first started out, I copied and pasted perfume names from the various Top X lists from NST or whenever there’s a poll or thread with interesting perfumes to a Word document (I don’t recall why I did not use Excel). On planned sniffatons to the various stores, I would haul out the list and check off everything I had sniffed. The papers eventually got smudged and I had to throw them out and then the cycle started all over again with a new list of perfumes to try.

I have a Google Doc, where I randomly put down names of scents I’d love to sample and a Fragantica shelf, where I sometimes do the same. Usually one of them is more updated than the other…

Then I have a “proper” spreadsheet for my purchases. Since I buy a lot online it’s fun to register my discounts ;).

Aroma Allegoria Exalting Aromaparfum. I smell mostly cinnamon in it, but I can detect pepper as well. In short, it is a spicy blend. At the same time, it has an airiness of the Allegoria line. This fragrance does not blow me away, but it is nice.

SOTD is Jicky perfume. I ADORE Guerlain and it is one house I can always count on for a scent on my skin. I have that ph that either just gobbles scent and expensive drops are wasted, OR it turns sharp and cat-pee like and I am scrubbing it off. I try and try and I simply can not wear anything by Chanel. But dear dear Guerlain? I’ve never had a bad sample, something about their base just works for me. I’ve been looking forward to today because I had choices, so many choices. I haven’t wore Jicky in awhile so it was the lucky bottle. One of my favorite sites is Monsieur Guerlain, he is a total freak about Guerlain and has tons of history and photos.

Route de Vรฉtiver has my favourite opening of all vรฉtiver scents, very bold and dramatic. That boldness is not carried through very well to the drydown but it’s a great scent nevertheless.

          • austenfan says:
            13 February 2015 at 2:50 pm

            In no particular order:
Encre Noir, MPG Route du Vรฉtiver & Racine ( a more genteel approach to vรฉtiver), Goutal Vรฉtiver, LesNez Turtles, Etro Vรฉtiver, Guerlain Vรฉtiver, Malle Vรฉtiver Extraordinaire, Chanel Sycomore and for an entirely different interpretation PdN’s Vรฉtiver ( not a favourite of mine mind you).
I also remember liking Kenzo Air and I think Terre d’Hermรจs merits at least a try.
Another supposedly great vรฉtiver is the Givenchy. I don’t know as I’ve never tried it.

          • Merlin says:
            13 February 2015 at 3:34 pm

Great list. For some strange reason the Malle and the Chanel do not appeal to me ๐Ÿ˜ฎ A few of the ones you mention I have not tried – but will at first opportunity! I would definitely add Dior’s Vetiver and Sel de Vetiver (Different Company). The Dior I fell in love with at first sniff while SdV has steadily grown on me!

          • austenfan says:
            14 February 2015 at 5:17 am

I’ve been wanting to try Sel de Vรฉtiver for a while as a lot of people seem to really like it. The Dior is an impossibility as I have not access to that collection. If, however, I happen upon them I’ll be sure to give it a sniff. One can never try too many vetivers!

The Chanel and the Malle are sort of along the same lines so that kind of makes sense to me.

          • Merlin says:
            14 February 2015 at 10:58 am

I think of them as being different – the one a smoky incense interpretation and the other hyper-realistic, but have never smelled them side to side. What aspect do you think they share? I’m curious as to why my vetiver infatuation does not encompass these two contemporary stars!

Lucky you! I own a beautiful Fleurs de Rocaille extrait bottle from the fifties, which was a gift from my aunt. It’s a gorgeous perfume, even if a little too good manered for me, which makes me very curious about other Caron perfumes. I wish they’d do good reformulations, because what I read pulls me off from ordering their samples from a different continent. But I’ll be adding some extraits of perfumes I already like in my next sample order, that’s for sure.

I’ve only had the opportunity to smell a few vintage Carons and they are not as opulent as most of the Guerlains. I found them quite bold and dramatic. Far less minimalist than the Chanels. I tried Tabac Blond, Poivre, Coup de Fouet and I believe Narcisse Noir.

I didn’t realize today is Guerlain day, otherwise I would be wearing Shalimar (EDT) like many of you–my only current Guerlain fragrance. I have been toying with the idea of purchasing Samsara, which I sprayed on myself while shopping the other day and enjoyed. At the same time, I thought it smelled somewhat similar to Estee Lauder Sensuous, which I already own. I wasn’t sampling them side-by-side, however. Can anyone comment on whether these fragrances really are similar or is it just my imagination?

I do love Shalimar, it’s such a gorgeous scent but it’s my mom’s scent and so I can’t go there, especially for my husband’s sake.

SOTD for me is Tea for Two.

Sadly, I haven’t any Guerlain. Nine of the ones I want to try are available around here.

I just saw that the Coach Leatherware Fragrances are on Hautelook today. They’re supposed to be pretty nice.

Oh how I wish nine were available but alas, that should read ‘none’.

Jonas, I love your avatar pic. I was also intrigued to see the Coach Leatherware scents on Hautelook, but some quick research revealed them to be cheaper through the Coach web site. Just a tip in case you were seriosuly interested in purchasing. I would like to try them, but as tempting as sale prices are, I’m sure I’d be better off with just decants.

Thanks. I went through a few avatars before settling on this one and I’m quite pleased with it. And thanks for the tip regarding leatherware. I wonder if it’s being discontinued.

I remember when I first smelled anything by Guerlain. It was 1988 and I was very young. A very fancy friend had come to stay with my boyfriend and me. He put some Vetiver on before we went out. I’d never smelled anything like it. I didn’t know anything could smell that good. I still associate Vetiver with that fancy friend, who is now the art director for a very fancy department store chain. It’s good to have fancy friends. ๐Ÿ™‚
p.s. – now that I think about it, I don’t think I even own any Guerlains. Egad! I really should pull the trigger on that bottle of Derby I’ve been wanting. Somebody enable me!

Wow, you had good taste. I was put off by the opening of Guerlain’s Vetiver for years until someone mentioned waiting for the dry down… After that I became unexpectedly infatuated with it!

About the enabling: Derby is about to go up – the price will double only 45 minutes after you read this. If you don’t get it now, you will NEVER be able to afford it. This is your only chance. Go!

Earlier today I wore Jicky, but now I’m going out for the evening and have added some dabs of Vega. I love this scent and splurged on it several years ago. Now I ration it out as I can’t bear to empty that lovely lovely bottle!

For some reason, I settled several days ago on wearing Jicky today (EdP though, not Parfum… sigh…). There was only about a quarter left in my little 1ml sample, so I put it all on — remarkable for me, as I am a dedicated underapplier — but I loved it today! Previously, the best I thought I could say about Jicky was that I didn’t hate it. A more generous application may have changed my mind…

I did a side by side with Terracotta le Parfum to decide which i felt like wearing- terracotta was more jasmine massage treatment while Mahora was sultry tuberose- so Mahora it was ๐Ÿ™‚

I just found out my 28 year old niece is a baby perfumista so I made haste putting together a sample and decant packet to ship off to her in LA. I’m so excited! Did a decant of PHI and got it all over my fingers. Mmmmmmmm..
I just got samples out to Jonas and Laurel. Sorry about the delay. Sounds kinda stupid but I literally couldn’t safely walk to the Post Office until today.

Ha ha, souvenir keychain. I love it. Last year I sent a tiny bottle of Chanel no. 5 extrait to Korea. I just played dumb and wrote ‘cosmetics’ on the form.

I’ve been looking forward to this all week because I’m wearing Cuir Beluga, one of my mood-boosting comfort scents. My coworker immediately complimented me on it this morning, so that was great. It’s been a long week. I really needed this one today. ๐Ÿ™‚

Even though Shalimar is my favourite perfume, I decided to wear Vol de Nuit parfum. There is a beautiful sandalwood in the base along with ylang-ylang, violets, amber, and touch of leather. The sillage is fantastic!!!! Oxford comma and exclamation points!!!! LOL YMMV

The twins turned thirteen today so there was much birthday goings on a foot. And, lil one seems to have an ear infection so considering everything happening lately on top of today, I chose L’Instant edp. It is one of my favorite comfort scents and is just so perfectly blended. I wanted gentle, sweet, comfortable and reassuring and that’s what l’Instant is to me.

I don’t know why it’s taken this Friday SOTD to make me realize how many Guerlain fragrances I own! What’s even more ironic to me is that most of the ‘classic’ Guerlains that garner so much devotion – original Shalimar, L’Heure Bleue, Apres l’Ondee, Mitsouko, Samsara – have never been my friends, despite years of trying to woo them to love me. That hasn’t kept me from loving and purchasing many other Guerlains over the years, however.

Today, Metalys won out. I adore this one, and dread the day when the bottle runs dry.
