Thursday scent of the day 1/29

Posted by Robin on 29 January 2015 140 Comments

Clinique Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve, solid compact

If you have a free moment, do chime in with your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Clinique Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve (although not in the solid form, as shown above). Has anyone tried the new Aromatics in White yet?

Reminder: tomorrow, 1/30, will be Oud Friday! Wear an oud fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Started Oud Day a little early with Mohur EDP. Gorgeous and utterly out of my price range.

This is one I haven’t tried yet, mostly because everyone seems to suggest it’s been ruined by reformulation. I do love sandalwood in all its forms though – artificial and otherwise. Might have to give it a try…and of course spring for an old bottle if I come across it.

I wouldn’t say it has been ruined by reformulation, just the difference between real sandalwood and what they use now is big. So yes, it’s not as good as it used to be, but still a nice fragrance IMO.

L’Ame D’Un Heros by Guerlain is my SOTD. On a chypre kick lately.

I gave Aromatics In White a quick sniff, then a more analytic one, it struck me as a NR For Her clone, and a very good one at that. I was disappointed because I mixed this one and Beyond Rose in my mind and expected a patchouli-rose-oud combo, which it’s not.

That’s a beautiful solid perfume piece! Not a fan of the scent, but wouldn’t mind one of those ; )

SOTD: trying a new (for me) Tauer from the NYC freebiemeet, Une Rose Chypree – he does not do subtle! Or light! The combo of patch & cinnamon is intense. Like but not love.

It’s fabulous! Love the rich color. Had no idea at first glance it was a solid!

My only question is (and this must be more intuitive in person) how do you use it? I mean, does the design get obliterated as you use it? Or does it sit on a table and scent the space?

      So many questions 🙂

I think that’s just the case shown in the picture–the solid perfumes I have had were in a little compact, which I opened and then the solid perfume inside resembled lip balm in texture.

    SOTD = Amouage Jubilation XXV

Wow! It’s warm and spicy and perfect for another cold day in NYC. I have a decant which will last me anwhile but if I come across a FB at a good price, I will buy it.

I appreciate those who had started early on the oud bandwagon. I seem to bave more oud perfumes than I originally thought (e.g. Mohur).

I should choose the option of getting an email once it becomes available. Coincidentally, there was a 25% off coupon on Fragrrancenet a few days ago and I filled my cart with two bargain priced perfumes – Prada L’eau Ambree and Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women. The former I just received samples from the lovely floragal (and haven’t yet tried) and a largish decant from a fellow perfumista. I was so proud of myself for abandoning my cart!

I was surprised at how much I liked XXV. (Because I haaaaaaated Jub 25.)

Incidentally… this came up yesterday but I don’t know if anyone has discussed it in detail – someone was mentioning that Lyric Woman may have been substantially reformulated. My decant is from 2010 (’09 maybe?) and it’s all dry rose/silvery meditative incense, sprinkled with spice. However, the commenter yesterday, and the review on Kafkaesque’s blog, both remarked on how ylang-y it is, and I think both of them were working off recent samples.

I don’t know that I would ever buy an entire bottle anyway – but I sort of hate it that the scent focus might have changed. Anybody have the dirt on this?

No idea but I haven’t ever gotten much rose from the decants and samples I have, and they’re all recent. It is mainly creamy cardamom and Ylang to me and it’s gorgeous, but that could just be my perception. I think it’s completely possible that there has been a reformulation since my experience seems to be very in line with Kafka’s but I haven’t tried any older juice. Maybe you should try a 2ml sample and let us know? Now you have me curious.

Given your love for Gold Leather I think you would enjoy Evening Edged in Gold…on my skin it lasts a while but when I spray it on a scarf it lasts forever! And to my nose it is a gorgeous golden leather with osmanthus, angel’s trumpet and midnight candy (a flower, not a synthetic note) and leather in the base….one of the few leathers I truly like….

I’m wearing Rosa Flamenca by Les Parfums de Rosine. My other Rosines are very light ( Ecume and Un Zest) this one isn’t, which is just as well on a wintry day.

Do you like the perfumers reserve? I like it a lot but nothing will ever beat the original imho. I’ve yet to smell white but I just can’t “see” a white version of AE in any way.

I’ve been contemplating M7 for tomorrow as well. It’s my only real oud fragrance.

I like the Aromatics Elixir Perfumer’s Reserve, but it is a different perfume from the original. To bad it was a limited edition. Agree, a “white” version sounds like an oxymoron!

It may have been Angela who described it as more huggable than the original. AE is a bit edgy and the PR version is smoother and a bit deeper.

I like both of them very much. I wouldn’t have wanted them to replace AE with PR, but I’m sorry PR was only around for such a short time. Seems like such a waste to develop something that good and not keep in the line. It was so much better than most of what’s in department stores.

The original is better…I’d like to see a Perfumer’s Reserve that wasn’t trying to modernize the original — just use better materials, you know?

Yep, so would I. My main complaint about the perfumer’s reserve is that it has so little sillage. And I find it a tad sharp. AE with better materials……, one can only dream!

I remember the original when it first came out and I went through many bottles…it was magnificent and a little went a long way… haven’t worn it in 25 or so years…..has it been reformulated ? do they even still sell the original?
Also loved Clinique’s Wrappings…I think that one is discontinued….

Sort of bricking it over a choice for tomorrow… I don’t really have any oud fragrances except for a couple of spray samples of BK Rose Oud (which, everybody knows, ain’t got much to do with oud but tons to do with jammy rose and benzoin, which is why I like it).

Wait, I’m wrong. I do have a sample of M7. That sweet Tama sent me a few years ago and which I have never tried. That’ll do it.

I was thinking I didn’t have any ouds and wasn’t going to participate tomorrow, which is fine. But you have reminded me I have a sample of BK Amber Oud, which also is not really much about oud either (or so I’ve heard). But it’s in the name!

Right, it’s not. I think I still have that sample too – I’m not huge on amber OR on oud, but BK Amber Oud is the silkiest, airiest satin veil of amber. Smoooooooooooth. If M7 tries to kill me, I’ll smother it in AO.

One of the Montale’s I can wear – I think it’s either Auod Rose Petals or Damascus. The rose part is just a knockout, so I tolerate the small bit of oud. But Oud and I don’t get along at all.

I found a sample of Azemour les Orangers that I had forgotten about and thought it would be perfect for today. I was wrong. It has gone all cold ashtray on me and gotten on my nerves. Harrumph.
PS. I have to mow the lawn today, too. Double harrumph.

I’m testing a set of Amouage attar samples off and on, and today it’s Amouage Mukhalat, which Zahras Perfumes (a google search result) describes it as tonka oil, cedarwood, moss and amber. I’d say cedar is the most prominent note. It’s growing on me. These attar oils stay very close to the skin, so they are mainly good for contemplation while sitting around reading, blogging, etc. They are discontinued, but the sample set is basically a lifetime supply for me.

SOTD is Fougère Furieuse. The first 1/2 hour was good, but that’s all I can say.

I just (blind) bought a 25ml of Aromatic Elixir and I am surprised for 2 reasons: first, the fragrance is much more rounded than I remembered, almost waxy if that makes any sense. Second, it has that one note that has made me dislike Guerlain Vetiver all those years. Chamomille maybe…

Went to an adventure travel program last night on the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area in northern Minnesota, a beautiful place to paddle a canoe and commune with nature, now I have a hankering for the North Woods. But since it’s still winter, I chose SSS Winter Woods with just a touch of SSS Fireside Intense, to bring inside those wonderful memories of past trips.

SOTD for the morning was Guerlain Bois d’Armenie b/c I needed something warm and wonderful, but had a LONG meeting so I wanted to be subtle. On the way home I revived myself with a small spritz of the original Donna Karan “Signature”. It is just so absolutely perfect for bitter cold weather. I only wear it a few times a year, but when I do, it’s just the right thing and it amazes me with how rich and complex it is. My favorite leather/suede ever.

Today is a continuation of yesterday. I’m wearing PHI Une Rose de Kandahar on one wrist and Chergui on the other. Since I talked about how I thought the base of PHI smelled similar to Chergui, I decided to actually compare side-by-side today to see if I’m not just out of my mind. And after the rose stage passes, they are pretty similar, though maybe not quite as dead-ringer-y as I thought.

Today, wore Bond No 9 Manhattan from a sample. I enjoyed it but it seemed fleeting on me. Didn’t smell much after 3 hours, though others might have thought differently.

For tomorrow, deciding between Creed’s Royal Oud or Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud layered over Lush Rose Jam shower gel and Ro’s Argan body conditioner. Oops, guess I’m combining this Friday and last Friday’s community project

Today I was scent free except for a silk scarf that had traces of LDDM on it. One of my sniffy clients gave it two thumbs up. To start off oud day early, I think I will put on some Lyric Woman. I’m pretty sure it’s the re formulation that was spoken about further up the blog thread. I get a lot of rose from it, but not till about a half hour in. Up till then, it’s a creamy complex beast that I find hard to pinpoint. I went through a bit of buyer’s regret with Lyric, a little paranoid that it was counterfeit because it didn’t seem to match descriptions in reviews. No matter, it’s still delicious.

Tomorrow I think I will wear Montale Black Oud, still giggling about the skull and crossbones that was hand drawn on the sample from a nst friend. Planning on wearing a dash of Rose Anonym tomorrow night, I think that one has a touch of Oud in the dry down.

In the interim, I’m going to try crocheting while wearing the progressive lenses I just picked up. The eye doctor could not believe how well I took his suggestion of progressives. I seem to be only patient of his who is not in denial about their age 🙂
