Wednesday scent of the day 12/31

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2014 142 Comments

Hermès Moulin à vent

Goodbye to 2014! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Hermès Cuir d'Ange.

Reminder: on Friday 1/2 we'll be doing our quarterly damage poll! It will also be Go Big or Go Home Friday...and you can interpret that howsoever you please.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the Hermès Moulin à vent, €340.

Natori, which is becoming one of my standards, and can work for both celebratory and subtle, depending on my mood.

Thanks for being one of the best parts of my year, NST folks and Robin. You’re the sweetest.

Oh, sorry — didn’t realize I was breaking the news! We’re talking this one, right:

          https://nstperfume.com/2009/08/10/natori-eau-de-parfum-fragrance-review/

          That one is definitely discontinued.

Yes – that’s the one. I had been too busy enjoying what I’d found to bother looking to see if it was still made. Thank you Robin!!!

This morning I put on Tauer’s Reverie au Jardin, from my new Advent Explorer set! I decided on three new scents for the set, and this is my first full wearing of RaJ. Verdict? Lovely so far! It has the familiar Tauer base, but a green, airy quality to the top notes. Looking forward to finding out more! 🙂

Ohhh awesome, L’Air du desert is one of my all-time favorites. When you say “new”, you mean you don’t already own it, or was this your first time getting to smell it at all?? I’m secretly hoping the latter–true story, I cried the first time I wore it!

When I learned of the draw win, I immediately went over to Our Lady to sniff everything, so I had that “research” to back up my choices. But I only put a few dabs on skin–LAdDM was one of the two or three I tried that way. Not enough to properly test-drive, but to at least get a general sense of if they’d suit me.

What a beautiful thing–to be so moved by a fragrance! I will be sure to report back when I give that one a proper go!

It does seem less-referenced here. I didn’t have any preconceptions of it prior to a quick dab from a tester, which is unusual!

Lavender! You’re right, of course, but I didn’t recognize that is what the flower is until now that you say it! Also explains the “airiness” I sense, I think. I often detect lavender as sort of dusty (but not in an unpleasant way).

I’m in AdP Magnolia Nobile from a gift set which arrived this morning. This one doesn’t seem to have many fans, but I’ve always liked it.

I’m still trying to decide if I should change into something fancier for later, though.

I’ve already declared my loyalties so weight this accordingly 🙂 , but I don’t think it necessarily would be redundant! It’s probably true that they’re both spring/summer florals, but iris is such a specific, distinctive note, and for me at least, I find I have to be in the right mood to wear it; I’d describe the AdP Magnolia as something of a more abstracted floral, which can make for a very easy go-to!

      • Abyss says:
        31 December 2014 at 9:37 pm

I think that Iris Nobile EDT is a fine – if short-lived – orange blossom perfume (I don’t get any iris from it and I don’t like the EDP version), but I’ve found myself reaching my for Magnolia Nobile samples far more often.

I’d agree with C.H. that it’s probably slightly more abstract and a no-brainer go-to summery floral. To me it’s really pleasant, feminine and wearable.

So…yeah…give it a proper try and see what you think 😉

Pre-shower scent is Or du Serail, which is extra-tobacco-y this morning and blending well with my coffee. The current plan is to see the new year in (elegantly!) with Chanel 19.

I would recommend going lightly with it in the heat you’re having – I find it works better as a cool-weather scent. It’s well below freezing here this evening, and in the end (full disclosure) I didn’t switch to the 19 after all – am enjoying the baked-apple-amber-tobacco goodness of OdS too much. 🙂

I have no idea what I’m going to wear today. I had one of those “omg, I better make it a good fragrance” freak outs because when I do put it on that’s it for the evening. We’ll be headed out to run a few errands and then a party. I’m thinking either Lyric or Memoir.

SOTD is the perfume I got from Hove Perfumes when I was in New Orleans last month, called Carnaval. It’s a light bright floral, with good staying power close to the skin. It makes me happy to sniff it.
Adorable hubbie and I are staying in for New Years Eve – we plan on an easy meal of already prepped lasagna and a Pinot that can take on the lasagna, and some key lime cheese cake and a Reisling recommended by a friend for desert.
Now you all know what my life is like, when it seems like the height (or depths) of decadence to stay home and eat “sinful” high calorie foods and go to bed early on the last day of the year…
I’ll put on one of his favorite perfumes, probably LouLou. What a night!

I have a bottle of their Caballero scent – I think it’s supposed to be for men but I love sandalwood and that was the only scent they had that had notes of sandalwood. I haven’t worn it in awhile because it tends to fade fairly quickly on my skin but I’ll have to take it out for a spin again soon.

NYE won’t be too exciting here, this year. I was planning on wearing my newly purchased, unopened bottle of Bois des Iles parfum, but my nasty flu from about 3 weeks ago combined with retail and finals hell slowly turned that flu into pneumonia so today is the first day I am really even able to get out of bed. I can’t breathe and am coughing up a storm, so nothing for me today. Boohoo, I’ve had my pity party! I am happy to live vicariously through all of you wonderfully smelling folks!

Happy New Years Eve (or New Years Day to the antipodeans). I’m going all out and spraying myself silly with Anubis from Papillon Artisan Perfumes – one of my top perfumes from 2014. We’re going to a friend’s for dinner tonight. We usually go to a party but it just gets a bit stressful with the kids staying up late and then having to not drink as I’m the driver. Instead we’re staying at a friend’s and we can all just relax a bit more. Happy New Years to everyone and thanks Robin for your great site.

SOTD is Tuberose Angelica; part of the intense collection from Jo Malone. I don’t like it as much as I enjoy Estee Lauder’s Private Collection’s Tuberose, but it’s still nice. Happy New Year, everyone!

Squeeee! The delivery man just came and my long awaited gift to myself came today – a bottle of Xerjoff’s Lira. I don’t mean to keep extolling the virtues of Olfactif, but since the shipment from them was delayed they sent me a complimentary 15 ml of Casamorati’s Dama Bianca so I think I’ll give that a try this evening instead.

No SOTD yet. Working from home am lazing about. Still getting whiffs of Lipstick Rose from yesterday – but only randomly and when I try to smell my wrist I get nothing. I enjoyed Lipstick Rose, but was disappointed that the spillage was so subtle.

SOTD is SSS Nostalgie, Laurie’s tribute to past vintage classics but updated in her unique contemporary style. It just seemed appropriate for a day waving goodbye to the past. Although not my usual taste, I can appreciate its beauty and seamless blending. It’s absolutely gorgeous and would be perfect for Go Big Friday.

SOTE will be Avon Extraordinary, the only contemporary Avon scent I own. And it is an extraordinary scent, combining sparkling champagne, dark chocolate truffles, and a bit of ginger flower to add some spice to the mix. An elegant floriental rather than a gourmand, it’s as rich and luxurious as today’s daytime fragrance, and its tall, columnar etched bottle reflects the scent well. It’s definitely celebratory and joyous and has been my favorite NYE scent for awhile now despite its humble origins.

Happy New Year to all, wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2015!

Good to know – I’m just getting my evening underway, and the chances are pretty good for a hangover tomorrow morning. Hubby is making steaks, baked potatoes and asparagus, we’ll open a bottle of champagne, and there’s eggnog with brandy for later on. Happy New Year!

After a nice dinner out and taking Chanel Beige extrait along for a “test drive” (and loving it), today I’m preparing to host a party and as always on New Year’s Eve, wearing Susanne Lang Vanilla Champagne. It’s warm, fizzy and keeps me going and helps set the mood.

Happy New Year, everyone, and may 2015 be full of fun, fragrances and happiness. 🙂

Happy New Year everyone! I’ve yet to climb out of bed myself. I’ve caught a nasty bug and I don’t think I’ll be wearing perfume today. I was really pleased to check out Olfactive Studio the other day though. It seems Sephora is now carrying the line in store along with L’Artisan. I tried Ombre Indigo and Lumière Blanche. Very nice I think but my sniffer isn’t in the best way so I’ll have to go back later to try them again. Hopefully I can snag some samples too.

SOTD eau de Gloire. It’s a sunny, cold day here and it seemed to be a good choice for sending out 2014.
Visited a lovely shop in Ann Arbor: Lily Grace. They carry Agonist, Andrea Maack, Nasomatto, and others, as well as cosmetics and skin care. Especially liked Andrea Maack Coal, but the real bonus was being able to buy my favorite Lipstick Queen shade without having to deal with Barney’s in Chicago…
    Here’s to a fragrant 2015!

I ran out of the house the other day and left my makeup/perfume stash there. I’m just doing stuff at the old house today anyway so have layered MKK and the Winter Kitty solid which were what I had in my purse. Makes a nice blend, actually. I am in the mood for a big perfume today so may borrow a spritz of Coco from Mom tonight. I have decided that a long drive on the interstate after dark on NYE to be with my husband is silly, especially since he has a cold, so I’m gonna have a quiet evening at Mom’s watching the sleet.
Happy New Year to all the wonderful NSTers! May 2015 be better for everyone.

SOTD is Bijan. It’s cold in Easr Texas today and I wanted something spicy and warm. This was a cheap thrill. I bought a FB for less than $13 at Ross before Christmas. I was considering this for Friday, but I think the biggest thing in my collection is Angel.

It’s a sunny, sparkling, very cold day here in the Portland metro area. I am making good on one of my resolutions this past year, which was to wear my ‘good’ perfumes every day- yes, even to work. SO i am wearing Chanel #5 eau premiere, which is just becoming my everyday scent- crisp, rosy, clean and sparkly, just like the day. I am not going out tonight- a scented tub (Lush’s Sex Bomb), Nuxe’s Huile Prodigeuese, thick soft socks, soft PJs, hot chocolate with brandy, cookies and board games with the boyfriend. No Champagne- he will be working in the morning, and besides, why start the new year with a headache?

(I know, I know- #5 eau premiere is the rap remix of #5, not as fusty, etc BUT- I find that it makes it so easy to wear during the day and it is the perfect thing after the morning workout shower!)

SOTD is once again Zelda- I can’t resist her siren song!

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2015! I will ring in the new year most likely sawing logs by midnight. Prior to that, I am having a quiet night in with Salsa (no, not the food! Salsa is my dog =)) and a good book (The March by EL Doctorow), all snuggled up in my bed.

Everyone who will be out and about please drive safely and be extra alert!

    Cheers!

Was just telling my cousin about my superstitious dislike of NYE hoopla, having had some nights out only good for recounting as amusing stories. A quiet evening at home is therefore on the books for me too! In Jour d’Hermes Absolu, and may or may not switch it up for the evening.

There seem to be scads of Omnia this and that. Is it the original Omnia that elicits these male reactions or do all of them seem to have this property?

I am speaking of the original, which is in a brownish bottle. In the US, I couldn’t find it on shelves but it’s widely available at online discounters. I did a blind but based on reviews and comments which made me think I would like it, and I do! Great all around perfume to wear when you don’t know what to wear! 😉

          Happy New Year!

Still trying to decide. Some of the contenders are Amouage Gold, Beloved, L’AP Seville a l’Aube, BK Liaisons Dangereuses, and possibly even Caron Nuit de Noel. If I were staying home, I’d probably wear Amouage Homage Attar; maybe tomorrow. 🙂

Have a great New Year’s Eve, everyone!

Got my haircut this morning and took the opportunity to try out Aftelier Palimpsest as I was heading out the door. I like the name better than how it smelled to me – all I got was animalic peaches. Perhaps my nose is broken so I will try it again.

SOTE = Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille

This was absolutely perfect for a lazy evening spent at my sister’s place eating pizzas and subs. And the best part is that it passed the sniff test so I can add this to my list of safe perfumes for scent phobes.

Scored a 50ml bottle of vintage Dior Poison! My friend’s Mum has been decluttering her life via ebay and I found it in her sell pile, still sealed in plastic. Apparently she received it as a gift but knew she hated it so never opened it, just chucked it in the back of her wardrobe. I offered to pay for it but she was happy to give it to me as a Christmas gift. Now I don’t know whether to use it or keep it sealed??
