Friday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2014 176 Comments

Hermès Sporting Life advert

Today is Flanker Friday! The community project: wear a flanker fragrance, and extra bonus points for wearing a flanker of a flanker. What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you didn't participate in the community project.

I am wearing Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles. No extra bonus points for me, but of course I smell fabulous.

Reminder: next Friday, the 18th, will be Sample Grab Bag: pick a fragrance at random from among your untried samples.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing vintage Emeraude cologne spray. Emeraude’s the flanker of Shalimar under another brand. At least I think it is….

I almost brought out my bottle of Miss Dior Cherie Eau de Printemps for bonus points but I don’t enjoy it: Coco Mademoiselle knock off. I can’t believe I still have it! I was young once and in love.

If I owned L’Ambre (or could find my sample) I might have worn that! But Eau Claire is probably better in summer.

Must stand up for beloved Emeraude… It PREDATES Shalimar. :)

Not that there’s anything wrong with Shalimar.

Parisienne by YSL, I hate to admit that I picked up off the clearance rack Marshall’s or TJK Max, without even realizing it was not Paris by YSL.
It opens very peachy and then goes berryish.

Not much of a shame, since I paid very little for it. It’s very fruity in sherbety sweet way, which normally I don’t like, but actually I kind of like it, the same way that on certain summer days, I will stroll to an ice cream stand.

My favourite flanker, which I’m wearing right now, is Midnight Poison. It’s very simple and stripped-down, mostly just greenish roses on a patchouli-vanilla base, but I think that’s what I like about it. Not midnight and not very poisonous, but still good. Poison Pour Homme is what it is. I can’t think why they discontinued it.

Tendre Poison had literally nothing to do with the original, but it was fantastic.

Wearing Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew Amber Nude. The original would probably kill me in the summer (and also my mother in law used to wear it, so I never have), but this is much lighter and sort of citrus/gingery, like amber lemonade.

A coworker and I talked about perfume a few weeks ago and she mentioned that her mother wore Youth Dew bath oil. She was so grossed out: “It’s thick and strong and oily! Ugh!”

Of course the next day I wore a healthy smear of the stuff. I got within three feet of her and her eyes got so big. She said I smelled like when her mom drove her to school nearly twenty years ago.

What a generous act! When you are of an age when your mother is driving you to school, poor mom can’t do anything right!
I bet she was truly touched.

No points, bonus or standard, for me! My flanker game is pretty weak, even among the samples I have on hand. All my options this morning felt too powdery or sweet, no replacements came to mind, and suddenly I was holding Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde, a non-flanker with no flankers from a line without flankers.

You know what, though? There really are a lot worse things to smell like. Anna Sui Night of Fancy was pretty much nothing but synthetic creamy-blueberry candy and I thought it was surprisingly agreeable.

I have a love/hate relationship with all of the Declaration series. I owned the original and gave it away, I think I owned D’un Soir as well and had to return it.
The problem is that screeching, high-pitched tone that does nothing but give me a headache. I love the scent but it messes with my head! ;)
However, I wore Essence a few days ago, and decided to try it today, and it didn’t seem to produce a headache either day. So, either I am over whatever that is, or maybe the juice has mellowed a bit (likely).
        You should try them though.

I was sure that I wouldn’t be participating in Flanker Friday since I didn’t think I had any flankers, even in my sample pile, much less flankers of flankers. But lo and behold I found Shalimar Ode a la Vanille (a flanker, but wait for it…) A La Route du Mexique (of a flanker!!).

Guerlainophile that I am, Shalimar never worked for me until I received some vintage Shalimar cologne in one of the NST swaps. Never say never – now I love the stuff! I do prefer the old cologne, though, to this Route du Mexique version.

Floragal, Zeta might be in Andy’s Collectibles line but it’s been there for a couple of years already and I don’t think it’s going somewhere.
I think you don’t have to be afraid of the situation that happened with Phi, which was out of stock very soon after the release.

I had to check my samples for flankers and found the previously unsniffed Shalimar Parfum Initial L’Eau, unsniffed because Shalimar is not my cup of tea (a heresy, I know). I am therefore pleasantly surprised I like the dryish vanilla-musk-iris-soapy drydown, nothing mind-blowing, but since I don’t have anything like it, if I happen to see a FB in some summer sale/sell-out, well why not?

I’m wearing Chloe Rose Edition (the flanker before Roses de Chloe). On me, it starts as a bright fresh rose, then dries down to a soft amber. I like it, I actually bought a full bottle when it came out. I felt pressure because I knew it was a limited edition. This was before I knew much about the classics and the niche lines, so I didn’t realize
how many wonderful rose fragrances there are out there!

Well, color me a snob. I wanted to play along but I had to resort to samples to find one. (And it’s not really a coincidence that I don’t own any. For the most part I have more respect for new creations than flankers.) So I found a sample of Givenchy Very Irrésistible, thinking that it must be a flanker to something called Irrésistible…not only does further research indicate my theory was wrong, but I am finding it rather unpleasant. I’m trying to scrub it and it won’t go away. I do have a sample of Stella Nude around here somewhere and will be replacing the Givenchy ASAP.

    Fun (?!?!?!) game.

Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere. To me, it’s perfect in every way. A masterpiece. It’s got great bones, staying true to the Chanel perfume aesthetic. I smell bits of Cristalle and Bois des Isles as well as No. 5. And, to tell the truth, I could never have fallen in love with No. 5 edt and parfum without EP as the gateway drug.

Hermes Caleche Eau Delicate, chosen because it was unlikely to be picked by anyone else. I made the mistake of putting Delicate on one wrist and the real thing on the other, and it wasn’t a fair fight.

That said, as light and airy as it is, it does have a personality of its own, and I want to wear it on its own tomorrow so that I can appreciate it properly. Also, I looked up the nose, Fabrice Pellegrin and found that he created two of my favorite Diptyques: Eau Duelle and Volutes!

There’s something so pleasing about finding out there’s an underlying coherence to one’s taste! I also find that a favorite “nose” is better than any other predictor for whether I’ll enjoy an unknown scent–brands and notes are typically pretty hit or miss for me, but if Olivia Giacobetti made it, I’ll almost always enjoy at least testing it, even if I don’t need a bottle of every single scent she’s done :)

I love Caleche Eau Delicate. Weirdly, I’m not a big fan of the original. Eau Delicate is another scent like No. 5 for me, correct in nearly any situation. Every time I wear it, I wonder why I don’t give it skin time more often. It’s soft, but really lasts, clean but woodsy. You smell great! Be well.

Well, I did wear l’Ambre and it was DEE-lightful! Glad a FB is on your list- its a very versatile scent that you cant really go wrong with so that makes it seem like a sensible expenditure (at least that’s the way I rationalize it!).

My samples are packed away and I only own one FB flanker, the aforementioned Shalimar Ode a la Vanille a la Route du Mexique, but I didn’t feel like wearing it today. So, I put a twist on Flanker Friday and I am wearing the fragrance I own that spawned a LOT of flankers (none of which I own)! So I am wearing Boucheron by Boucheron.
    Love the civet in this.

I failed. :( I was going to wear youth dew amber nude today but then I got a sample of Guerlain Djedi and I couldn’t NOT wear it immediately.

Oh. My. GOD with this perfume. Why oh why did Guerlain discontinue it?! I want to drown in it. I want to bury my face in it. I think this is what heaven smells like. (So of course I would fall madly and deeply in love with a smell it’s impossible to get a bottle of. ::sigh::)

SOTD – Shalimar eau Legere (or Light). It says both on the box. I am enjoying the lemon creme brulee sillage. I have several of the Shalimar flankers. Vanille, Mexique (with back ups of both) and interestingly wear them far more often that Shalimar (which I have in several different concentrations). I’m not sure why.

    Happy Friday Everyone!!!

Considered my Shalimar Light today, but it’s too muggy.

Do you have the blue juice or the straw-colored? I think the blue was the second version, and that’s actually the one I prefer, though the original one was probably closer to actual Shalimar.

EL’s Pure White Linen Pink Coral for me today. I’m not sure if this is a flanker of a flanker, since I think of Pure White Linen as a flanker to White Linen but perhaps it’s a scent in its own right? A bit of pink pepper adds some spice to innocuous pink florals, a pleasant scent, not too strong or too florally for the summer. Enjoyable when in a rare summer mood I’m looking for something ‘pink.’

I’m wearing Especially Escada Delicate notes – it’s such a fun summer scent. I generally strongly dislike pear and aquatic notes, but I find them charming here. I’ll probably pick up a roller ball from Sephora in the near future.

Hope everyone has a fun weekend planned. I’m getting a surprise visit from my dearest friend tomorrow (well, not “surprise” surprise, she just texted last night and asked if she could drive down for a short visit. Why not? I am a scent twin with many so perhaps we can call this flanker of a flanker “octo-flanker”.

Ahem, if we are counting points, I wore flankers M – Th (4 points) + Flanker Friday flanker of a flanker (2 points) and I will give myself an extra point for spelling the SOTD correctly. Total points: 7

Aaarrgh. Wish I’d thought about YD Amber Nude because I own it and like it. Just didn’t register that it was a flanker. Oh well.

I’m wearing a sample of Bulgari Omnia Amethyste and not liking it at all. It started with a blast of synthetics that smelled like hairspray and although it’s better now that it’s calmed down a bit, I won’t regret washing it off at the end of the day.

It’s just registered on me that I haven’t liked any of the samples I’ve worn in the last week or so well enough to want to purchase them. Which is probably a good thing for my overflowing perfume cabinet and for my wallet! :)

I didn’t think I had any flankers, then I realized so many of the ones I bought just for the bottle are flankers… I have a few flankers of Vera Wang Princess flankers, VS Tease, I have Fancy Nights and a lot of Juicy Couture. I think the Juicies are mostly stand alones, but Viva La Juicy La Fleur is definitely a flanker.

However I went with Couture La LA, because it’s the only one I can stand to wear for more than 10 minutes. They don’t smell bad to me, but they’re so loud, or something, whew.

I’ve had it on for half an hour and am about ready to strip and take a shower, though. Lawdy.

Don’t own a single flanker. Nada. Not even among my samples. So today I’m wearing Black Orchid, which at least has a flanker. Coincidentally, it was what I wore for wear a fruity fragrance, and I could also have worn it for my made in the USA fragrance. Who knew Black Orchid could be so versatile! I tend to think of it as the scent that pouts when I wear it to clean the house.

I only own one flanker, Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue. Since I wasn’t feeling very iris today I stopped by a department store, determined to spray on the flankeriest flanker I could find!
Unfortunately it seems a lot of flankers (like the Daisies) don’t make it to my little corner of Sweden, but I did find Calvin Klein Sheer Beauty Essence, a flanker of Sheer Beauty, which is obviously a flanker of Beauty. It seems to me that the essence of a sheered-down flanker would mean we end up with the original scent again, but the perfume masterminds behind CKSBE think otherwise!
It starts out loud and bright with rosy florals and some variety of fruit – there’s nashi pear listed in the notes but as far as I know nashi pears don’t smell at all? Maybe that’s just the well-travelled kind we get here that’s scentless. It mellows slightly and turns into a bright, clean, peony type of scent. You know the kind, not a stem or grain of dirt or anything that hints at a real blossom, just a truly bright and pink Flower, dubbed peony for reasons obscure, but more reminiscent of fabric softener than garden flowers. After a while it veers rose, still bright and pink but more distinct as far as the flower involved goes. It dries down into sharp laundry musk. It’s got good sillage but is not particularly long lasting.
tl;dr version: it smells like a million other rosy-hued department store fragrances.

I did find Penhaligon Blenheim Bouquet (100ml) at half-price so I snagged it! Hello, lemon scented summer days! Yay!

I don’t know if this counts as a flanker of a flanker or not, but I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin Eau de Minuit. I like it a lot, though the name is a mouthful. It has all the licorice of the original, but it’s not as sweet. I’d really consider it unisex. It kind of reminds me of SL Douce Amere or Keiko Mecheri Paname.

In other flanker news, I was at Marshall’s yesterday, and I found a 30ml bottle of Angel Parfums de Cuir. I was surprised to see it, so I figured I shouldn’t let a good deal get away. It was, for all practical purposes, a blind buy since I had only smelled this version once right after it came out, whenever that was. Last year? Two years ago? Anyway, I’m glad I did it. I like it better than the original Angel because the leather note tamps down the sweetness.

We have several Marshall’s stores here (in Houston), so I go to different ones. The one where I found Reem Acra is right across the street from the Galleria, where Saks and Neiman Marcus are, so for all I know it could have been overstock from Saks or something. I haven’t seen it at any of the other Marshall’s stores I’ve been to. I haven’t been in that one in a while, but I could check and see if they still have any.

Do check it out. You never know when you’ll find something. It seems to me like I find higher-end stuff at Marshall’s vs. TJ Maxx or Ross. The thing about those stores is that you do have to wade through a lot of crap to find the good stuff, but I think that’s part of the fun. I don’t know what part of town you’re in, but I’ve had fairly good luck at the Ross and Marshall’s in Meyerland too. That is where I found the Angel PdC.

I wore Guerlain Ode a la Vanille Sur la Route du Mexique, Kenzo Flower Oriental, Prada Candy L’Eau… Then got up this morning and just spritzed on the new FM Eau de Magnolia. Over spritzed, really–for something that sounds sheer, that thing projects. And projects. It’s pretty, but powerful. I feel like I really do have a hemlock sillage today. Ooops, on several levels. From my sample swap haul, I found a vial hand labelled “Kenzo Oriental,” which I am guessing is Kenzo Flower Oriental? If so, it counts.
Some spicy sweet vanilla, which I might not have ever picked otherwise, but a little bit of citrus makes it nice for today. Also better as a little dab than a giant spray.

I wore Rosarium this morning just because it is so sparkly and happy. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of the 20 minutes of it. I have now replaced it with Febreeze (Sleep Serenity to be precise) and a splash of the Simple Green Cat Odor Remover on my right leg. Yes it is cleaning day here and I smell very…um…fresh. I am green with envy right now; the rest of you smell great.

I’ve been away for a few days but did remember the flanker challenge. I seem to be light on flankers so I went with Fancy Nights this morning. I know I have other options in my samples but didn’t have the time or energy to dig through them.
I’m not sure what I’ll wear this evening. I have a book release party to go to. It’s sports related so I’m thinking something with leather might be appropriate. If I had one of the Mugler leathers that would be perfect but I don’t have any so my evening scent might not be a flanker.

I forgot about Flanker Friday, and even forgot to put anything on this morning since I had a headache and was running around and late for work. But lo and behold, my stash of perfumes here at work held a sample of Prada Candy L’Eau! I do like this better than Candy – for some reason, I got a ton of musk from Candy and did not care for it. The L’Eau is still pretty sweet, but less musky to me. Doesn’t really seem like a L’Eau either (which makes me think watery or fresh), but nice enough.

I’ve realized I have almost no flankers in my collection except L’Ambre de Merveille and today’s choice Shalimar Ode a la Vanille sur la route de Madagaskar.
I see quite a few have chosen Shalimar flankers but I seem to be the only one wearing Madagaskar so far- was that one more limited than the Mexico one?

Indeed, the Madagascar one is older and much more difficult to find.

Don’t have a ton of flankers… Shalimar Light, YSL Paris Pont des Amours, and TF Black Orchid Voile de FLeur.

Felt like white flowers today, so it’s VOile de FLeur. I smell good. :)

Today’s flanker is Stella Nude (I think it’s the only flanker I own), but I cheated and tried layering it over L’Eau Ambree. I like the results quite a lot.

Wearing Gaultier2 Eau D’Amour! Love the scent even though it’s very much a feminine style of scent it smells really awesome on me and I get a compliment every time I wear It! :-)

I only own 3 flankers. Omnia Crystalline, which I kind of like on certain days. Azurée Soleil, which is out, since I wore it last week, thinking it was flanker day then. Gorgeous scent, but as it is grey and rainy not the best match.
I chose my third flanker which is Eau Première. Great fragrance, easy to wear and suitable for most occasions and weather.

I started out the day wearing the first (?) version of Shalimar Light (yummy confection take on Shalimar with lots of vanilla and like wearing ice cream) and then put a bit of Love, Chloe Eau Intense on after coming inside for the day when the heat got to be too much. It was a tough decision but I really do love these community scent of the day posts. I haven’t worn Shalimar Light in quite a while and it was fun to dust it off again.

I’m wearing Lancôme Magie Noire, which I think counts as a flanker of the older Magie. This one can be over powering, but I spritzed lightly and have been enjoying its green-ness all day. MN is a long time love of mine and I’ve always felt like men could wear it too.

    Dior Hypnotic Poison Elixir.
    Flanker of a flanker! Cha-ching!
Licorice and original HP EDT for the first 15 minutes, licorice fades and HP EDT remains. I love HP so it is great for me. YMMV ;)

Yesterday was Friday for me so I wore L’Ambre des Merveilles, which steadied me through a busy and rather stressful day. In the evening after a shower I got out my Caleche Soie de Parfum but discovered AFTER I had dabbed it that finally it has turned almost completely, and is basically unbearable. I don’t wear it often but like its feel of luxurious guest soap, as an after-shower experience. It was just a mini, but still … :(

Anyway, today is a new day and I’ll be in Bottega Veneta.

About three years, an eBay purchase, and it was slightly off when I got it so I can’t really grumble too much. I should have used it up faster. ..

I forgot. Went to an Abba tribute concert this evening and felt like a true Dancing Queen… wore Truth or Dare and enjoyed it. Maybe a dab or two of Organza Indecence after my shower will be nice to go to sleep with and that counts as a flanker? One of my favourite bedtime scents anyway.

I’m revisiting Givenchy Amarige d’Amour, which notable mainly for being one of Bertand Duchaufour’s early efforts (2002, with Emilie Copperman).

It starts out very nice, if rather cheap smelling, and then basically falls apart before too long.

I only have one flanker (a sample) so I wore Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue. I MUCH prefer the original. This one turns instantly into powder, powder, powder and more powder. It lasts forever (yuck), although by the end of the evening it actually smells OK on my shirt–the powder dissipates somewhat. Looking forward to going back to the original. :)

Wow, powder! I don’t get any powder at all (thankfully!!!), on me it’s got more vanilla and sweetness than the original, but not a grain of talcum in sight. It’s interesting how different a perfume can smell to different people!

Wore my favorite flanker Samsara Shine for the sync. Tested Pleasures Flower and Pleasures Delight at the dept store . I know they are both flankers too so triple points for wearing three ? Or do I have any bonus for a foaf?
