Posted by Robin on 10 January 2014 25 Comments

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid

Tom Ford will launch Velvet Orchid, a new fragrance for women, in March. Velvet Orchid is a followup to 2006's Black Orchid, and will join the Tom Ford Signature line. Other recent fragrances from Tom Ford Signature include Sahara Noir.

Notes for the floriental fragrance include rose, jasmine, and a purple orchid from Brazil.

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid will be available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

(via parfumerie.nl, e-breuninger.de)

Update: The notes for Velvet Orchid include bergamot, mandarin, honey, vanilla, orange blossom, rose, jasmine, narcissus, magnolia, Cattleva leopoldii orchid, heliotrope, suede, labdanum, sandalwood and myrrh. The fragrance was developed by perfumers Antoine Maisondieu, Shyamala Maisondieu, Calice Becker and Yann Vasnier.

I don’t get it, wasn’t Black Orchid enough? Perhaps it will be good, who knows.

You mean that he should have released Black Orchid and then nothing else, ever?

No, just was wanting a different flower I guess. I didn’t notice the bottle was purple, that is kinda cool.

Not a fan of his sig line really, another orchid scent doesn’t seem to grab my attention either..that’s kinda what I meant.

I am looking forward to it too… I do like the TF signature line. And that bottle should look stunning in purple.

Is the bottle, purple? May I just say, gorgeous!

From the listed notes…. it sounds like Velvet Orchid will be more traditionally feminine, than the original Black Orchid. Honestly, when my father smelled Black Orchid, on paper, he assumed it was a men’s cologne. He was shocked that it was a women’s perfume, due to its heft.

Yes, although hard to tell in the picture.

I can’t remember where I read it now, but there’s an article somewhere online where TF states that his only direction to the perfumer for Black Orchid was to make a fragrance that smelled like a man’s crotch. So, yeah…I’d agree it is masculine. No idea who they used for the test subject though. :)

HA! What?! That’s some great trivia, though I think Black Orchid smells like good soap. Maybe a crotch that just got out of the shower.

Strange because I find it somehow too rich, but not particularly animalic. Perhaps I’v forgotten how the dry down smells…

…wish he’d resurrect the Black Orchid Voile de Fleur. Loved that one, can’t bear the original. (On me, anyway. Somehow I like it much better on men.)

This is not a flanker to Black Orchid, is it? “Follow-up” sounds to me more like a related-but-different idea. And TF does seem to keep using the same names – Black Violet, Black Orchid, et cetera…

I don’t know. The sources I’m using are Dutch & German, will have to wait til it gets an official announcement in English, but they imply it has similar notes as Black Orchid with some variations…which to me says flanker no matter how they do the name. But also this came up recently — the difference between a flanker and a series — and I admit that it doesn’t make a whole ton of difference to me, it’s just nomenclature, and since brands almost never use the word flanker, it’s hard to ever be sure. But “followup” was my wording, so really means nothing.

Wasn’t a huge fan of Black Orchid, but it always interested me. It’s one of those scents I keep trying to love because it’s fascinating…but I don’t think it works on my skin. I completely missed the Voile de Fleur version that Mals and so many love.

I’m really excited to try this one. It sounds right in my wheelhouse :) Yea! A mainstream release to lem! Be well.

I have liked most of the Signature Line (the notable exception was Sahara Noir which smelled like my father’s woodworking workshop on me) and this sounds great. I look forward to trying it.

I like Sahara Noir, especially enjoyed it on Christmas Eve, didn’t have to go to church anymore! The one I like least from this line is probably White Patchouli.

Oh, I really like it on others. But on me, it smells like pine, oak, and maple sawdust. I actually like that smell, but not as a fragrance on me.

White Patchouli was great on me, but not enough to buy it.

I liked both Blonde Violet and Sahara Noir – but not enough to buy them:) Perhaps this will be the one!

Merlin, tag me in the sample swap. I have a huge bottle of Violet Blonde and am happy to share. I love it but can’t wear it to the office often, a little too assertive. It also just don’t feel appropriate in our typically weird New England winter.

I bought Santal Blush for the new year and I am obsessed with it . I heard that even though it is a unisex fragrance, it was more on the masculine side. I totally disagree. It is extremely sweet smelling. If this new one is anything like that, I will be in heaven!

I saw Tom Ford Velvet and I immediately thought that he was bringing back Velvet Gardenia, only to have my hopes dashed. Oh well. Will still try it when it comes out though
