Burt!

Burt Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds. Two versions, one above and one below the jump. These were made in 1998; there were also ads featuring Kenny Rogers and Lorenzo Lamas.

What, no comments? Burt has man-growled the snark out of all of us?

I think everyone is commenting under the Brad post, that’s all!

I like Brad Pitt as an actor, but not for this ad. This ad is just not as good as an ad for Chanel should be. Burt is much better, just fun, and probably with a MUCH lower budget. I’m in my 50’s.

I’m boycotting the polling station! I disliked them both with the following provisio: I was able to watch the Burt ad about 3x and the Brad one, well maybe 1.5. I agree that the Burt one is witty – but he is so SMUG! And I know my eyebrows are too mobile, but his are worse!

I’m in my mid-30s which may be why I tend to like grunge styles so I ought to like the Brad ad! I like the concept of a restless, soul-searching male traveller liking, paradoxically, a classical premier fragrance BUT. Ok, well, this is the wrong part for Brad: he is not the kind of actor who can look introspective. Jeremy Irons could have done it and so could the younger Adrien Brody. Brad cannot pull off a dark and brooding look. Secondly, as others have mentioned, the script is SO faux-profound. A journey has an end, but we don’t? Does he think he is immortal???

I confess that a Kenny Rogers ad for White Diamonds is one of the photos in my screensaver rotation.

Kenny Rogers..he was cool..until that plastic surgery..he really didn’t need it! Face got better with age! Too bad really.

Burt and Kenny were both bearable – and let’s not forget times have changed since these ads ran AND, importantly, they were not for Chanel. However, Brad Pitt is SO toe-curlingly embarrassing and totally unconvincing that I could hardly bear to watch. Could anyone look LESS appropriate? What were they thinking over at Chanel? He has tarnished the brand in my opinion.

Got to be Brad over Burt… If only for the presence of wrinkles… But I’d like to see the Kenny Rogers one! But if it has to be Burt then I’d go for the second one. I’m 50. Well very nearly.
