Chanel Coco Noir ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2012 69 Comments

Chanel Coco Noir

Chanel will launch Coco Noir, a new oriental fragrance for women, in August. Coco Noir is meant to be sophisticated and elegant; and is a flanker to 1984's Coco.

Coco Noir was developed by perfumer Jacques Polge; the notes include bergamot, grapefruit, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla, sandalwood, incense and white musk.

Chanel Coco Noir will be available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

Update: see a review of Chanel Coco Noir.

The scent reminds me of shalimar parfum initial…I know ill get butchered for that comment, but there are similarities to me there. In Canadian $, 50ml is $112, 100ml is $152. It’ll be their most expensive fragrance of their bulk market stock.

I’m not usually a bottle tart, but I may have to make an exception here. I’d be so very happy if the juice managed to be a faithful reflection of the original Coco, but felt less stridently ’80s — I admire the original, but there’s something about it that’s just a bit much (and I usually have no problem wearing perfumes that are a bit — or a lot — much).

As soon as you see it you realize it’s the most obvious update to that iconic bottle. I can’t believe they didn’t do it years ago.

I don’t often buy things just to have the bottle but this could be the exception.

I love opaque bottles! I display them with much less worry. I am so far from even using half of the juice in almost all of my perfumes, I can’t imagine getting low enough to wonder how much is left will be a problem in the near future. Exception – my Rive Gauche may just be less than half full now. But it will still last for years.

More shopping has ALWAYS worked for me (my husband not so much)! As an aside, some opaque bottles are clear on the bottom so you can tip the bottle and see how full/empty it is. I too prefer the opaque to block the dreaded scent morphing light rays. All my current bottles are safely hidden in drawers or kept in their original boxes. Love, love, love the notes listed for this and can’t wait to try it. Truly hope it isn’t a wishy washy compromise like 19 Poudre was/is.

      • 50_Roses says:
        26 July 2012 at 7:49 pm

It is difficult to tell from a photo just how opaque it will be. I have the original “black bottle” Zen, and if you hold it up to the light, you can see that it is not totally opaque, that it is in fact a dark green in color, and it is easy to see the level of the perfume in the bottle. In any case, I like “black” bottle for perfume as they protect their contents so well.

Coco is already pretty noir. Crossing my fingers that they’ll treat it with respect and actually deepen and darken instead of cleaning it up. Totally agree on the bottle lust. And I want it in extrait! (Which is how I like to wear my Coco…)

I feel as if it’s going to be a ‘noir’ version of mademoiselle and not the original coco. The ingredients make me think of Narciso Rodriguez “for her”, but with and incense tone, minus the honey flower.

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a whole lot of Noir scents coming around? And what makes it Noir? Is it just a general sense of “darker” or are there usually a few notes that regularly get added–like “sport” usually has that ozonic feel?

The bottle for Coco Noir is drop dead gorgeous! I love the original Coco, it is my favorite Chanel.

Though, for some reason the notes listed for Coco Noir remind me of a cross between Coco and Coco Mademoiselle. Kind of like a cleaned up version of Coco, instead of and even deeper version. I enjoy Coco Mademoiselle, a lot, but it cannot hold a candle to Coco.

On a more positive note, I will definitely be smelling this when I see it in stores.

@Marjorie Rose, agree, there’s a whole lot of noir going on. Noir means nothing. See Dahlia Noir.

Does the “Chanel” on the bottle make people lose their critical capacities? No peach, no clove (isn’t it banned anyway?), no cinnamon, no leather? PATCHOULI AND WHITE MUSK, people?

    Repeat, PATCHOULI AND WHITE MUSK.

    PATCHOULI AND WHITE MUSK
    PATCHOULI AND WHITE MUSK
    PATCHOULI AND WHITE MUSK

This sounds promising. The original Coco is one of my favorites for winter. Even if I don’t end up liking it I hope this is a sign that a revolution against fruity florals is in the near future.

OH JOSEPH MARY THE APOSTLES EPISTLES ALL THE SAINTS AND THE THREE WISE MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOUNDS GORGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D Cannot Wait to smell! Seems like it’s a new Scent in the Coco Range, just as Mademoiselle is it’s own scent with little relation to the original Coco this seems like another take on that! I generally HATE Flankers, but this sounds too good to be true, although of course, it cannot even COMPARE to Coco Itself… that is just too much a masterpiece to ever topple or recreate! :-D But it sounds like it will have it’s own identity and may be a classic in it’s own right! :-) Polge has never done me Wrong (As some feel he has with Bleu and with No.19 Poudre) Except with Chance so my hopes are WAYYYY Up on this one!

Agree the bottle is beautiful. Agree the scent sounds good. But if Chanel has a Noir “suffix”, it feel like it’s a sign of the (flanker) times. I don’t think Coco would approve. I know there are other Chanel “flankings”, like Poudree, Mademoiselle, etc …. but everyone does NOIR!

I really hope it is a darker Coco. You know, a perfume aimed on us, people who like perfume. We are a slice of the market too, a slice that buys (and wears) a lot of perfume, by the way, even though we may not be that many. Serge Lutens is doing pretty well. As someone said above, a girl can hope. That would actually be clever, to decline Coco first in a light, pink patchouli version for the teen market and then in a true dark version, albeit contemporary, for grownups/hardcore Chanel perfume fans. And isn’t that a nice bottle! But if the (more likely) thought of a washed down, Coco Mademoiselle-like version turns out to be true, I’ll pass, and deeply miss the nice bottle.

I wore it … Secretly? Something vague was said when the bottle was handed to me but I’ll forge ahead… the bottle is lovely and I don’t care if I can’t see the juice. It should be held enough to gauge the weight: not a hardship. The patch is beautiful. Grapefruit – not a fan – lends brightness to offset that patch (I don’t detect any sharp citrus). Simple, deeper than Coco. Not as warm, definitely sexy. Not a lot of sillage. I think patch groupies are going to squee all over the frag boards (sigh).

My local Saks counter had one sample! They did not give it away but let me spray on a blotter.
If you are hoping for NOIR, well, I did not find any.
It opens very citusy and dare I say ‘fresh’. There is a very close relationship with Coco Mademoiselle which I do like.
I missed most of the middle part (having a impatient toddler) and 24 hrs later I am only able to speak to the dry down. The relationship with the original Coco is definitely noticeable, but it feels like a cleaned up version.
I have a decant coming and I am sure I will enjoy it, but if I am in the mood for dark, I would reach for the original instead of this one.

Guerlain did a black bottle for Shalimar and Lolita Lempicka did a black bottle in 100 ml for its midnight flanker. Personally, I never wear black unless it’s under duress from work, so I don’t like the bottle. Coco has never been my scent but I have great respect for Chanel fragrances.

I think I tried this. ( I will explain) and didn’t like it AT ALL.

The Chanel SA at Holt Renfrew in Toronto last weekend was offering sprays of a secret new launch (which I can only assume is this) and I smelled it and said “orange blossom and white musk?” She said “bergamot” and “yes, white musk”. Way too synthetic and young-smelling for my taste. Did not smell like a Chanel to me.
