Humiecki & Graef Clemency ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2009 35 Comments

Humiecki & Graef Clemency fragrance

Niche line Humiecki & Graef has launched Clemency, a new fragrance "inspired by a the pride of a mother":

As the name suggests, Clemency expresses the exaltation of the mother figure: regal yet highly feminine, she exudes an authentic and justified pride and stature - with a status so naturally lofty and well deserved that she never dwells on it. Clemency displays a complex of contrasting characteristics as only a mother can: it is at once tender, generous, glowing and forgiving, proud, serious, stern and inscrutable.

Clemency was developed by perfumer Christophe Laudamiel; notes feature rose, linden blossom, cassie, milk, sandalwood, leather.

Humiecki & Graef Clemency is available now at First in Fragrance in Germany, 149€ for 100 ml Eau de Toilette. (via first-in-fragrance)

“Clemency”…makes me think of those old gangster movies, when the governor calls the Big House right before the execution.

The name is awful, but the notes sound nice. I guess if it’s fantastic, one could always pull a Kevin and rename it. :D

That was pretty much my reaction, except I forgot about the “Kevin strategy” option. :)

Why not? Except my mind is blank — can’t think of a single good name.

The milk note wouldn’t be breast milk would it?? Wow, that’s some of the goofiest ad copy yet. And kind of creepy, too.

Didn’t they already do one with breast milk? Somebody must have, it sounds so familiar.

Not at all sure this is even the goofiest ad copy from H&G…they’ve done some pretty darned goofy ad copy.

I wasn’t even familiar with H&G. Guess I haven’t been around long enough yet.

Ha! OMG! At first I was excited that it had a Polish name, being a Pole myself. But it went downhill from there. (And as Polish words go, that wasn’t exactly a beautiful, poetic one.) Wow. Ok, I remember the “how men cry” thing mentioned in The Guide. :) Nice. Ok, you’re right, this wasn’t nearly as ridiculous.

Not a Pole here, Ms. Kitty, but of Polish heritage. Skarb is actually a very strange scent; very vegetal (the copy didn’t bother me much on that one either! I found it poetic). Cześć!

Couldn’t agree more and it’s quasi-offensive… as a Mother I don’t define myself as “tender, generous, glowing and forgiving, proud, serious, stern and inscrutable.” Sounds like a Mary Poppins figure.

I don’t get offended by H & G copy anymore, since it’s all so gloriously goofy that I can’t possibly take it seriously as a comment on feminity or motherhood or whatever. And since it’s more from the super-fabulous Christophe Laudamiel and adding to my favorite series of scents of the year, I say “Yippee!”

Oh, good, I was starting to think that I was the only one not offended. (Surprising when you know how much ELdO irritates the life outa me.)

Notes don’t appeal to me much, though.

I’m starting to change my mind on ELdO, Mals, since my infatuation-of-the-week is Vierges et Toreros and I find it amazing. Fat Electrician was nice too; nothing special, but nice.

My, what must these guys’ mothers be like? Adjectives to describe my mother status would be…anxious, inconsistent, guilty, exhausted and covered in chocolate stains. It’s hard to fit a perfume round that, I guess.

This is just proof positive that men do idealize their mothers. As we gals know, real women aren’t like that. We’d love to be Super Woman, so serene and regal and far above all the minor annoyances of life…..but unless we’re blessed with a housekeeper and a fleet of nannies, it’s pretty unlikely.

I agree – what an odd name. It DOES bring to mind Edward G Robinson in an old b&w movie, being strapped into the electric chair as the clock on the wall clicks inexorably toward midnight.

ooookay…. crawling out from under my rock here to say I think this sounds GREAT. If they want to do a fragrance exalting the mother figure, I’m all for it. I could use some exalting. Also I think the notes are completely bizarre and I would love to smell it. I’m not sure I’d want to wear it (between the linden and the cassie it would probably smell like pee on me) but it doesn’t sound dull. A dull mother fragrance would have disappointed.

I’ve really liked what they’ve done so far at H&G, so absolutely want to smell it, and in the end couldn’t care less either way what it was inspired by. The prevailing (and widely accepted) idea in the fragrance industry that we need “stories” to be attracted to new fragrances strikes me as a bunch of hooey.

Wow. I don’t find that copy “idealizing” at all and it even states outright “complex of contrasting characteristics.” Oh well.

I still have several H&G samples from their last batch of scents that I haven’t even touched yet. Eau Radieuse, etc.

Agree that the name reminds me of the governor making a last-minute call to the big house. LOL. Maybe the French cognate connotes something very different… (and yes I know it’s a German house).

Am I the only person who is so glad that her mother is nothing like that ad copy?

I mean, wow, “regal yet highly feminine, she exudes an authentic and justified pride and stature – with a status so naturally lofty and well deserved that she never dwells on it.”? LOL! My mom is down-to-earth, highly opinionated, and super intelligent. She doesn’t give two hoots about appearances and isn’t conventionally feminine at all. Thank goodness!

The scent sounds like it could be interesting, but man, that ad copy is too funny!

My mom would have laughed her head off at that copy and gone on to create her own riffs on it to provoke further hilarity.

For some reason I immediately thought of Premier Jour by Nina Ricci.. Didn’t they have some reference to milk in their add copy at the time?
