Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 30 March 2009 52 Comments

Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte perfumeChanel will launch Cristalle Eau Verte, a flanker to 1974's Cristalle fragrance, this April (although it will not reach the US until July).

The new fragrance, by perfumer Jacques Polge, will  retain the "original honeysuckle accord" and add magnolia. I will update with more detailed information when I can find it.

Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte will be available in 100 ml Eau de Toilette. (via cosmeticnews)

Update: additional notes include lemon, bergamot, neroli, jasmine, and white flowers. (via glamourparis)

Another update: see a review of Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte.

Second that–Chanel wouldn’t bring out two fragrances that are mirror images of each other. The new interpretation is well done but I urge everyone to try it first before buying it. Magnolia is not one of the most perfumista-friendly notes out there.

Good point. I’m not terribly fond of magnolia but I love both Cristalle edt and edp and Chanel usually doesn’t screw up their flankers…too much. Does anyone know if this is a limited addition? I just remembered about the LE re-relaease of Jo Malone’s Dark Amber & Ginger Lily and that is definitely at the top of my Must Have list.

I don’t think so. Last time I heard the Chanel fragrance specialist said I would be distributed along the line of Eau Premiere–they actually have very similar price points so this doesn’t seem like a limited edition.

(And remember Les Exclusifs were tagged as limited editions back when they were launched? ;-p On the other hand the same specialist flat out denied the release of Les Exclusifs in parfum edition. Either that or she hasn’t received any info.)

I curious about Cristalle now, and after perfumeshrine’s recent post about this. I confess I’d never heard of it until recently. Is it more sweet or green?

The original Henri Robert EdT from 1974 is green & crisp, the later Jacques Polge EdP is more floral. Neither are overly sweet.

This will be an unsniffed purchase for me. I love Cristalle, in all it’s forms, edt, edp, whatever. Making it a bit greener sounds wonderful – I’m hopeful it will be like Bel Respiro ‘cept it will last for more than 1 hour. That would be dreamy.

Totally agree with you. Bel Respiro was lovely, but too fleeting. Cristalle, the original at least, is tenacious and gorgeous!

I didn’t ask the price (there wasn’t anybody at the Chanel cornor today) but it should be around the ball park of Eau Premiere–Les Exclusifs is “top du top” in terms of pricing so I don’t think anyone will charge that much for a fragrance with such a wide distribution.

I just sampled it today (you can read about my crazy day from my blog Les Tuileries) and it is VERY long-lasting: I sprayed once on each side this afternoon and it’s still going (albeit a bit fainter now) after about 9 hours. I find the drydown to be similar to Bel Respiro, although the opening for a moment reminds me of Eau Premiere. Over all I think it’s pretty well done–whether you can use it as a BR substitute I am not sure (it’s up to the individual) but it works for me.

an enthusiastic SA talked me into the Cristalle EDP unsniffed as they were out of stock of my beloved EDT, saying the only difference would be the longer staying power. sadly, i found Cristalle EDP to be a completely different scent, one that i did not like at all. so….by making this flanker “greener” perhaps it will smell more the original *scratches head*

“why” is all i can ask. ah, yes, the incredible success ($$$) of Eau Premiere….

one would think that would teach me not to buy unsniffed….lol t’would seem not :-)

I agree, the EdT & EdP are quite different scents. Hoping this is more like the EdT.

More similar to EdT to me (can’t use EdP) but the drydown to me is different and infused with a bit of musk / amber element with some green herbal aspects. Definately minus t the oakmoss & narcissus edge in the original. For the lack of a better word I think it’s less assertive in terms of verdancy and tang.

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I was a starving student and felt constrained to use up the bottle, so a daily unhappy perfume experience. My faith in SAs, and possibly Chanel itself, was shattered that day. Will definitely try the new version, but in person and with caution.

I’ve bought them both unsniffed and luckily like them; too bad we don’t have Cristalle stocked locally so that I could give it a test.

I’m hoping the new Verte falls in between the edt and edp.. I’m eagerly awaiting reports.

Woman, I can’t wait to get my hands on this.

I agree with the other posters…this one will be an unsniffed purchase. Or, because it looks like this one may be at department stores when it comes to the states, more like a quick “sniff and sell”!

    Hugs!

Dior has the light green lilly of the valley Dior Cherie so they had to counteract.

Dior Cherie Eau Verte disappeared from my wrist in 10 minutes. Hope this one’s better. I adore honeysuckle, in fact add jasmin, honeysuckle and orange blossom to a fragrance and it may be one floral I’d actually wear!

Perhaps, but I think it’s more about the overall trend–freshness is the buzz word right now. As far as I know Chanel doesn’t counteract everything out there unless it’s a phenomenon. But anyhow to me it’s very long lasting on my skin so hopefully it will work for you!

cristalle is one of my favourites, the edt for the hot weather and the edp for autumn and spring. the edp and the edt are a perfect example of what a difference the concentration makes, and i guess, the new one will be totally different, with the magnolia. looking forward to it!

I’ve been wearing Cristalle EDT since 1981, I am not a happy kitten…. The original is a marvelous crisp green scent. Perfect for a warm humid summer day.
When I read the news of reformulation on perfume shrine, I promptly bought two bottles. Which blew my numbers for Q1 fragrance purchases…..

The “adding magnolia” part doesn’t sound like it will make it more green than Cristalle EdT, but no matter. . . I’m powerless to resist.

Considering that the original Cristalle was unbearebly green for me, I definately don’t feel like I need a ‘vert’ version. I probably shouldn’t mention that the original smells like sperm to me, but there you go :-)
Still, I must admit I’m a bit curious.

Cristalle is a wonderful scent. I can’t quite “picture” a green, magnolia-ish Cristalle, but I’m interested!

Cristalle is one of the Chanels that smell like some soapy cleaner on my skin. I love magnolia and honeysuckle, so I will give it a try.
EP works also really nice on me while No.5 just stinks (only the extrait is okay).

But I am very very happy with my Coco Mademoiselle Extrait. The lasting power is not overwhelming, but is not as fruity as the EdP and much nearer to Coco itself. Imho the extraits from Chanel are not easy to appreciate for a beginner.

I helped myself to big spritzes of this at The Bay Queen St. in Toronto (SA claimed that no samples were sent). I absolutely loved this. Fresh, sparkling, crisp. Walked around all day sniffing my wrist. This was the way I wanted Bvlgari Green Tea to smell on me vs. the overwhelming old cigarette butt scent that emanated from my skin when I tried it, repeatedly. To me, Cristalle EV is a quintessential Spring frag.

I’d describe it as a cross between Bel Respiro and Eau de Cologne. Since they are 2 of my favorite Les Exclusifs, Cristalle Eau Verte is a winner with me. Impatient me bought this unsniffed from eBay and sprayed it on in the car after picking it up from the post office. Between No. 5 Eau Premiere and Cristalle Eau Verte, I’d have to say that Chanel’s re-imagining of the classics is a good thing indeed.
