Marc Jacobs Lemon Splash, Tom Ford Private Blend Italian Cypress ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 23 February 2009 37 Comments

Marc Jacobs Lemon Splash perfumeTom Ford Italian Cypress perfume

Marc Jacobs has launched Lemon Splash, the latest in the brand's limited edition Splash collection:

MARC JACOBS Lemon captures a slice of summer with the fresh, bright scent of sun-drenched citrus. Deliciously vibrant and sophisticated, lemon revitalizes the senses with its crispness and vitality. Fragrant, light and refreshing—a burst of sparkling sunshine comprised of the finest, most elegant ingredients. At the heart of the fragrance is iced Italian lemon orpur, the purest form of oil hand-pressed from fragrant Italian lemons. This crisp citrus note mingles with mandarin and honeysuckle to create a sweet radiance. Cotton musk, white vetiver and spring-water amber round out the balance of notes with smooth sensuality.

Marc Jacobs Lemon Splash is available now at Nordstrom in 300 ml ($68); Rain Splash and Cucumber Splash have also been relaunched.

Other recent additions to the Splash collection: Fig Splash & Gardenia Splash

Tom Ford has launched Italian Cypress, the latest addition to the Private Blend collection:

A distinctive fragrance that blends tradition and innovation.

Notes of vibrant Citrus, verdant Basil and Mint meld with radiant woods and resins before the refined Cypress heart ignites to reveal an earthy warmth.

An aromatic botanic-rich fusion designed for the contemporary fragrance connoisseur.

Tom Ford Italian Cypress can be found now at Neiman Marcus, in 50 ($180) or 250 ($450) ml Eau de Parfum.

Other recent additions to the Tom Ford Private Blend collection: Champaca Absolute.

Update: another description of Italian Cypress, via Selfridges ~

Is a perfume dedicated to a gentlemen of the 70’s, “the kind of man that’s not easy to find anymore” Tom Ford. Italian Cypress is an elegant fragrance achieving the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Vibrant top notes of mandarin and bergamot blend with galbanum and Moroccan spearmint. While clear accents of clove buds and basil, labdanum, Icelandic moss create the robust essence of Italian quality and luxury for the refined individual.

    Italian Cypress sounds ok
    Have you tried Japon Noir?

That Lemon splash sounds lovely – I hope it lasts longer on me than the Basil, but then I never really got to “splash” that one.

Not being a snob, but those splashes (at least the pear one) turn into nasty, vile things on me. Seriously… gag-worthy.

I might sound a bit strange – but how do you manage to handle this 300ml bottles? My hands are too small to hold them and to do anything with them.
Lemon with cotton musk sound like a must-have, but the MJ packaging scares me.

    I think that's one of the few I haven't gotten to yet…

None of them last one me. I mean, they're supposed to be summer splashes so I guess that's ok, I just haven't really loved any of them anyway.

I haven't had that experience at all, but none of them were interesting past the top notes either.

I never bought one so don't know! I suppose if you loved one of them, you could decant into a spray atomizer.

Maybe you could decant into smaller bottles. Once in a while I find perfumes that are bottled so oddly that I have to use two hands, like those rectangular Prada bottles.

I've been curious about the MJ splashes and I can't resist the description of this lemon one. I think it has to do with the fact that Winter has become SO tiresome and I'm craving warm weather and long days. This scent sounds so bright, summery and refreshing! I can't wait to make it over to Nordstrom's and check it out.

This can't be worse than the DK Delicious Night bottle! Love the scent – HATE the bottle – I always feel like I'm struggling with it when I apply the fragrance.

I love combining the MJ Amber, Violet & Ivy splash – usually in that order. For me it's the perfect Indian summer/early fall scent. I found all three at TJMaxx. Luckily I also found an MJ Splash travel set with four glass atomisers to interchange with the black metal sleeve-protector. Those are much easier for me to handle than the big bottles but I love how that big chunky glass looks on my bathroom counter. :)

How is the Basil one? Is it a “kitcheny” type basil or more fresh. I'm kind of afraid of smelling like an Italian restaurant…although if I smelled like a Thai restaurant that might not be so bad. lol

Sorry, one correction. The set had three atomisers plus the sleeve. Ooops!

Just FYI if you like basil, The Thymes had lotions and body sprays in a “Fresh Basil” scent that I really liked — more fresh than “kitcheny”. Sadly, it's dc'd, but I've seen it on ebay. Used to be one of my favorite lotions.

I just found my Basil sample. It is quite fresh and green, definitely a true basil, but it has a bit of that watery accord I never care for much. It fades quite fast but I am not getting any of Joe's rotten pear at this point – it still smells good, just weak. Not something I need to have, but not bad. If someone gave me a bottle I would put it on as a refresher or as a base for the “real” perfume I was wearing that day. ;-p

I think I know which one you're talking about. I used to find it at a card & gift shop I used to frequent. I smelled it but never bought it. I'm going to definitely check it out on fleabay! Thanks, Joe! :)

Thanks, that is basically what I needed to know. It sounds like it has the same to less lasting power than the other MJ Splashes, but I think I may just have to have a bottle. *sigh* What recession?

You know, I just noticed on ScentSplits that the same woman from whom I bought my LARGE decant (like 30 ml or so) of Pear Splash also has the Basil. It was a really good price, especially if you don't think you want 300 whopping mls.

I take it that the Lemon Splash is some type of giant, after bath splash thing like Jean Nate (but more upmarket)?

I like the idea of a lemony summer scent, but I'm not sure about this cotton musk business – what is that? Is it musky or is it that horrible burnt sheets in the dryer smell? What's white vetiver? Is that an actual thing? or do they mean a “light” vetiver?

sigh – I guess the only way to know is to go smell it.

Exactly what the Splashes are. And “cotton musk” to me means a very clean musk that smells sort of like cotton drying in the sun, you know? And no, there's no such thing as white vetiver so far as I know. Except that the vetiver in perfume comes from the root, which is probably whitish to begin with, right?

Guessing I'm happier with my Carthusia Mediterraneo for lemon :-)

I am such a sucker for Cypress… This sounds Utterly Promising, as i have found mostly all of the TF Fragrances INTOXICATING! (TF for Men, TF for Men Extrem, Black Orchid, TOBACCO VANILLE, AMBER ABSOLUTE, VELVET GARDENIA, CHAMPACA……. OOOOOOOOOO) I need to roda bank to afford all of them but i must have them! and will! this sounds delcious as well! YUM!

I have amber, basil and orange. These are not outstanding but they are ok for casual weekends. I find that the best way to handle these ridiculously huge bottles is to decant it into smaller bottles and give most of it away to friends. I find 30ml decants are about right.

I haven't tried that one yet – but I may have to get a sample. I really want a good lemon for the summer, but I don't want to smell like Lemon Joy dishwashing soap.

Tried the TF Italian Cypress last night – it is definitely masculine on me. Nicely done though. Smells like what you would imagine from the notes listed.

Have you ever smelled Aqua di Parma's Cipresso? Does it compare? I love the scent too, but it definitely wears to masculine on me.

It doesn't smell like cleaning product to me, but some people have trouble with lemon that way. Worth a shot!

I'm in love with the Marc Jacobs Cucumber Splash, and the Rain Splash as well, but I've had the bottle for so long and it's not half through yet! I'm afraid it'll lose it's pretty little punch if I don't use it up.
I love to eat lemons but I can't wear them, unfortunately. Citrus gives me horrible stomach aches and goes sour on me eventually.

It's not easy to use up 300 ml of anything! Oh well, it wasn't dreadfully expensive, right — if you can use up 150 ml for that price, it won't be a total loss.

I sampled the Tom Ford Italian Cypress in Selfridges on Oxford Street yesterday and was blown away by it.
Utterly fantastic, striking and majestic. A wonderful rich and heady fragrance that will turn heads for all the right reasons.
