Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 15 August 2007 23 Comments

Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur perfumeTom Ford is preparing to launch Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, the new Eau de Toilette version of last year's Black Orchid fragrance:

Black Orchid Voile de Fleur offers a new twist on the iconic original, blending the essence of textured florals with a sexy and sophisticated sensuality in a sparkling eau de toilette.

The alluring potion of Black Orchid is given a warm effervescent modernity with this new entry.

Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur is said to be a lighter scent, with additional white flower notes. It will be available in 50 and 100 ml, and can be pre-ordered now at Neiman Marcus. (quote via neimanmarcus, additional information via vogue.fr)

Also coming soon from Tom Ford: Tom Ford for men. Tom Ford Extreme for Men is to follow in November, then a new fragrance for women in 2008.

Update: see a review of Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur.

Oh dear, can't they just keep their hands off the white florals? There are plenty of giant white bouquet fragrances around to jump into the faces of the unwary… grumble…. Black Orchid is gorgeous and unusual, why make it mainstream and forgettable?

You may have noticed – I'm no friend of the tuberose and gardenia fraction….

D, I love white florals myself, but sorry to make you grumble :-)

I assume they're trying to reach an audience that didn't love the original — and I would say the original was kind of a love-it-or-hate-it. Certainly many people found it too strong, so if they've in fact lightened it up, perhaps it will find some new fans? I'm just hoping it is at least a bit less sweet.

Ah, designed for all the people who almost choked to death in the original BO miasma! (hey, why doesn't Tom Ford hire me to write his ad copy?!?)

Now see, I thought you'd be offended if they lightened up your beloved BO!

I would've been, but you said, additional white flower notes :-)

I liked the first one a great deal, and did not get any of the XXX factor that TF was apparently aiming for. He seems to be great at developing perfumes, just kind of icky-poo when it comes to talking about them. Anyway, the original just struck me as being very lush. You know how the blurbs always say “for romantic wear”? B.O. is definitely it, for me, so this new one might be the warmer weather version of the original, maybe? Less sweet and lighter (kinda like “tastes great AND less filling”).

They should have left it alone!

Or instead released this under a different name. Grey Orchid?

Oh boy, Tom Ford Extreme for Men? I can't handle any more extreme-ness!
BTW, I love the fact that Black Orchid reduces down to BO. Obvious, but still entertaining.

I'm hoping for a lighter, less sweet, warmer weather version, but then why on earth they're releasing it now (actually, think it comes out in Sept) is beyond me!

the thing is, what i didn't like about the original was just how mainstream and bland it became after the first couple of minutes. now they've lightened it? wrong direction, folks!

I was wondering about that too. Perhaps aiming for the southern hemisphere market?

Maybe the whole seasonal fragrance thing is “over” — there almost doesn't seem to be any correspondence any more between when a fragrance is released, and when it would be appropriate to wear it.

The awful, horrid Black Orchid hasn't been around long enough to be 'iconic.'.

    Reminds me of this:

'When asked by a British TV presenter how it felt to be working with fellow “legend” Kidman, 79-year-old Bacall replied: “She can't be a legend: you have to be older.” '

I like BO, but completely agree you can't be “iconic” after 1 year on the market.

And trying to imagine saying such a thing to Bacall, and can't. That takes some gall…

Saw your comment in my Inbox and read, 'I like B.O….' LOL!

It was terrible on me. Sharp, acrid, ugh!

So I was lucky? On me it is the ultimate comfort scent, warm, unusual, cuddly and sexy, all in one

I really thought it was just terribly well done, but it is a wee bit too sweet for me personally, and I wished they had done more with the dry down — I thought the top notes were more interesting than the base. But that's just me. It has some avid fans too :-)
