Bruno Fazzolari Unsettled ~ fragrance review, with an aside on Jean Patou Colony

Posted by Angela on 10 June 2019 31 Comments

It was an emergency. A few weeks ago, I was decanting the last of my Jean Patou Colony Extrait into an atomizer, and the atomizer toppled. I managed to save most of it, and I mopped up the rest with my forearms, but the writing was on the wall. Before long, my beloved Colony, a pineapple chypre as goofy and glamorous as Carole Lombard jumping on the bed in My Man Godfrey and as gentle as goose down in a breeze, would be a memory. (Sob.)

I was lamenting this to Tracy at Fumerie, and she asked if I’d ever tried Bruno Fazzolari Unsettled. The Nevada Museum of Art commissioned Fazzolari to create Unsettled — the fragrance, plus a uranium glass bottle shaped like an atomic bomb’s mushroom cloud — for a 2018 exhibition on Western art…

Frederic Malle Music For A While ~ fragrance review & quick pineapple poll

Posted by Kevin on 16 May 2018 61 Comments

Allure irrésistible. At a party on Paris’ rive gauche (where the ‘intellectuals’ with black AMEX cards study…party and shop) a woman’s fur coat (SO 80s, SO démodé) is lifted from her bare shoulders, exposing her neck to the candlelight (what about her face?…tiny candle?) Aware of many eyes upon her (“What a NECK!”), she pauses, smiling to herself, before emerging like a conqueror from the shadows. (Doesn’t take much! Sounds like Kim Kardashian, doesn’t it?)

Delete the bold type and this is how Frédéric Malle PR describes Music For A While,* the brand’s latest perfume. I grunt and roll my eyes as I read the fuddy-duddy copy, but as often happens with this brand (its backstories annoy l’enfer out of me), the fragrance makes me smile and present my (non-black) American Express card at Barneys New York…

Jean Patou Colony, Ma Collection & Heritage Collection ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 7 September 2015 14 Comments

Jean Patou Colony Heritage Collection

There is now an uneasy feeling in France. The sky grows dark and rumours of war are abroad. There is a longing to be somewhere else. People dream of a warmer sun and wider horizons. As if in answer to these dreams and longings, Jean Patou produces a new scent, Colony — a scent evocative of sun-ripened fruit, the melting aroma of spices and the blue-black manes of Creole girls.

This is the description of Colony, launched in 1938, from the booklet that accompanied the 1984 Jean Patou Ma Collection set of minis of old Patou fragrances, including Colony. To me, it’s a good description of the Ma Collection Colony (assuming that Creole girls’ hair smells like pineapple, of course). I’ve never smelled the original Colony, developed by perfumer Henri Alméras.

The press release accompanying this year’s Jean Patou Héritage Collection reissue of Colony informs us that “The new fragrance will be a modern adaptation of the historic Colony scent.” Reading this sent shivers down my neck…

L’Artisan Creme d’Ananas: scented body products

Posted by Anjali on 11 March 2007 13 Comments

L'Artisan Creme d'Ananas body cream

Robin has already made a brief mention of how lovely she found Crème d’Ananas, the matching body cream to L’Artisan Ananas Fizz, but I couldn’t help writing more on the subject. Not being a fan of the original Ananas Fizz (too little pineapple, and far too much grapefruit and cedar for my tastes), I hardly expected to warm to the lotion. I probably wouldn’t even have tried it had I not decided to buy a jar as a Christmas present for a friend. Once I idly sampled the contents of the jar at the countertop while the sales assistant was ringing up my purchase, my friend’s needs suddenly receded to the background and I decided that perhaps the cream should be my Christmas present instead!

I’m not sure that I can adequately describe just how wonderful this product is…
