Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-April 2026

Posted by Robin on 11 April 2026 168 Comments

PSA: the splitmeet and the spring reading poll are coming up on the 25th of this month.

Meanwhile, our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you hope somebody will split (or you're thinking of splitting), whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

We’ve got rain headed this way, the cool air has already arrived, and I’m hoping the rain is sans hail and lightning since we’re perched atop a bluff and completely exposed. 😬

Wearing several sprays of Shalimar l’Essence today. You can’t overdo this one and it’s just straight up pretty. Great all around scent for any occasion.

For those interested, here’s the spot we’ve been in for the past week. An absolute stunner and so glad to be here. Every once in a while I have to step back and thank my lucky stars that I’m able to experience places like this on the regular. 🥰

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy weekend!
Sotd is Louboutin Oud Fetiche. Reviews mentioned being similar to Bitter Peach and I agree, but OF is less fruity and with noticeable clean oud. The golden stiletto cap and facetted bottle is so pretty it’s almost a shame not to display it.
Tea at the moment is Fortnum & Mason’s Rose & Violet Creams. It’s 110% floral but don’t worry it doesn’t taste like lipsticks! Lol. It is also quite tart, due to the hibiscus and rosehips but once you add sugar or sweetener it is deeeelicious. Think Parma Violets or Pastiglie Leone.

      Tea lemming!!!

Meanwhile I will start with brewing some Rose Black Tea (Art of Tea) with Kusmi Violette and cacao husks tomorrow, and I suppose I could add a bag of Traditional Medicinals Rose Hips & Hibiscus?? Must experiment!

Forgot on Sunday, but this morning did 1 spoonful black tea, 1/2 spoon each rose and violet, 1 spoonful cacao husk. Did not add the rose hips & hibiscus. I don’t use sweetener but I do add milk or cream.

This would be a lovely afternoon tea and I wish I could still drink tea in the afternoons! But next time will add 2 spoons of cacao, and then will try with the hibiscus.

Yep the FM is a herbal infusion. I would probably love it more if it’s black tea based and more cocoa heavy like your version!
Do you skip afternoon tea because of caffeine? TWG has some decaf choices maybe you’d like them?

I used to drink black and/or green tea all afternoon, but now I pretty much have to stop by noon or it affects my sleep. And no worries, I have tons of herbal teas…I am pretty much drinking tea straight through to bed.

But something about the rose + violet is delicious but not quite right for morning…I find the same is true of Earl Grey, I used to drink a cup almost every afternoon and now I just don’t drink it as much.

One more bird for today: the great blue heron, because they nest nearby and I often see them out our windows. I’ve watched them stand completely still for eons looking down into the water while they hunt (fish) their prey. And one magical morning I was out for an early walk and saw a great many of them (25 or 30) bathing in the water nearby For the Seattleites, this was at the locks, near where they nest. I’m trying to find my photo to add to my instagram.

Today’s fragrance is Lost Alice by Masque Milano. It is gently herbal at the opening, then lots of orris and tea with a nutty/earthy drydown. It always feels like a morning fragrance to me, and so that’s my connection with the early morning bathing blue herons.

The Heron rookery at the Locks is a thing to behold – all of those huge birds (who weigh so little) perched on tree limbs. It’s so fun to see the babies and how awkward they are.

We have them here in Vancouver, too. I’d seen them along the beaches, one or two at a time, so I knew they were here. But then I took a photography lesson and there’s an area right at the edge of Stanley Park where they nest. It was pretty incredible to see so many of them in the trees!

I think they are fairly common where there is water nearby, but I didn’t grow up with them and it’s fun to watch them. It is amazing to see them up in their nests.

The other bird who I adore is “Wren Wren,” our Bewick’s Wren. They have the most melodic song this time of year.

    https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bewicks_Wren/id

I thought about the fragrance L’Wren Scott, a collaboration between the designer and Barney’s but my sample has gone missing. I didn’t realize until now that it’s a Ralf Schwieger fragrance. It was quite unusual, maybe the wormwood opening.

So instead, I grabbed Olympic Orchids Carosello, a fragrance that reminds me of carefree summers at my grandma’s house, where the scent of flowers was enhanced by the heat and even then, I was entranced by watching and listening to the neighborhood birds.

Post shower I am going with Vanilla Nomad from Sana Jardin. I think this house has closed down; this fragrance is kind of great.

My goal today is to listen to NO news, just deep house music as I do chores and laundry.

Then I am going to start a new white board with wants/needs for looking at houses in Santa Fe.

    Have a good Saturday, all!

I’m wearing Pictura Fragrans Kopi Lewak. It’s a decant, and I know I didn’t buy it so I must have gotten it in a swap. It has a massive coffee note at the beginning and then gets a bit muddled. I certainly don’t need any more. I am going to Istanbul in three weeks so it’s time to start looking at wardrobe choices. I only bring a carryon for 10 days so I have to be judicious in my picks, but over the years I’ve learned what works. I just need to make sure everything fits and is in good repair.

I was there with a teen, so I didn’t really get to any perfume shops, unfortunately. We did like going to the Kiliç Ali Paşa Hamam. And the ferry trip up to (almost) the Black Sea at Anadolu Kavağı is very relaxing, on a nice day, but can be hard to fit in since it takes most of a day. If you can get out to Chora, the church there (now a mosque) allows you to get a lot closer to mosaics than you can at Hagia Sophia, and you can stop off and see the old Roman aqueduct on the way there.

We ate well! We did a shorter culinary tour with Culinary Backstreets, and it was amazing. Sounds like you’ll be well served on that front.

The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the giant cisterns, and another less-well known but truly gorgeous mosque, the Sultan Pasha Mosque (a bit harder to find, but well worth the visit). The very best thing is all the cats everywhere, sunning themselves and enjoying life!

The cats! SO many cats! And yes to everything mentioned above,. The key to doing Hagia Sophia & Topkapi are to get there absolutely first thing in the morning. We walked right into Hagia Sophia at 8 a.m. and it was quiet, with few people there. Then we went over to Topkapi right after. By the time we left around noon, there were huge lines at both places. But I figure the tour will have those covered! The Sultan Pasha Mosque is not far at all from the Blue Mosque, but a bit hidden away.

Beautiful 😻, Pretty 😽, and Adorable😸asked me to remind you to please celebrate National Pet Day with your special ones today!🥳

Another favorite bird is the tiny plain brown bird, the house wren. Though it may look nondescript, it is anything but. With its uptilted tail, it flits around and sings all day long – morning til night – in a very loud voice for such a tiny bird, a cheery, trilly, uplifting song 🎶 that brightens my summer days. I first discovered the wren a few years ago when I heard its song repeating and repeating; it hadn’t been here in previous years but now it’s an annual visitor. I learned that the male arrives first and literally whistles while he works, preparing as many as 9 nests for his mate to examine when she arrives! Then it is she who chooses which one she will raise their broods in! Cheer and joy are what the house wren brings to me, and I’m pairing it with BBW’s Forever Sunshine, the scent I wear to honor all my past and present furbabies and now will wear in the spirit of this special bird on National Pet Day 🐱🐶🐭🐰🐢🐡🐧🐦

    Happy weekend!

Beautiful day here- sunny and breezy, just cool enough for zip up hoodie over my shirt. Perfection!

SOTD was obtained in a swap a long while back. Had never heard of it but ended up falling in love with it after the initial wearing: Korres Saffron Amber and Cardamom. Over on Fragrantica, the men have claimed it as “clearly masculine” but I dispute that. I don’t care for “clearly masculine” scents on myself, so think again men! It’s a soft lovely spicy amber with low/moderate sillage and good staying power. I wouldn’t mind having a bunch of bath products in this scent…Can’t remember who I swapped with to get this but Thank You! 😀 Off to walk the dog…

It’s Sunday morning and I’m basking in CdG Red: Palisander (thanks to a multi-part swap with an extremely kind NSTer) while sipping my first-ever London Fog. I discovered that my favorite tea merchant, Murchie’s, offers an Earl Grey tea with added lavender, so I used that for the London Fog and oh my! Delicious and aromatic, and its aroma blends so well with Palisander’s rosewood that the combination is making my eyes roll back in my head. Literally!

Hi SG, my Sunday tea-enabler, I went to Murchie’s site to find the blended Earl Grey with lavender and couldn’t locate it. Are you combining tea leaves of just both? I have a Harney’s Super-blue Lavender loose tea I could combine with a regular Earl Grey, but I’m looking for something already blended to make life a little simpler this spring while my attention and energy are directed elsewhere. If you could attach a link, your London Fog sounds like a beautiful wake-up team for me. Thanks!

Im not familiar with your scent but I bet it blends beautifully with your libation!

They just call it lavender tea, but it’s on a base of Earl Grey. I’ll try inserting a link: https://www.murchies.com/product/lavender-tea/

Hopefully that will get you there. 🙂

I haven’t been posting much lately because honestly, I really have no news or different perfumes to report on. I am pretty satisfied with my collection right now. Today I am wearing Eau D’Italia’s signature scent. It is going to be 82 degrees here today so thought I should go with something light. This chypre scent fits the bill.

Did you see the bbw sale? All body care $5.95 through today. I picked up the new peach one.
I tried the Gingham Fresh but couldn’t decide.
It’s going to be in the 70’s here for a few day’s, with storms.

Kris, I enjoy seeing your posts and please don’t think you shouldn’t post unless you have a ‘different perfume’ to report on. Some of us here are always trying new and different things, and some of us, like you and me, are satisfied with our collections but that doesn’t mean we can’t report on our favorite oldies but goodies we enjoy wearing a lot. I enjoy the wide variety of posts here from all NST’ers.

Happy Sunday! And Happy Orthodox Easter to those who celebrate (two of my friends, do)!

Woke up to a gentle rain and the air smelled amazing. Trying to decide between Encens Mythique and Angeliques Sous la Pluie, with the former winning out. Even layered frankincense oil, although its really cool outside – very temperate. EM has felt very healing, calming and restorative, regarless of the weather.

Honestly I don’t think I have such a thing! I tend to smell things from my little arsenal of essential oils (right now, I have frankincense, hinoki, lavender, sweet orange, ylang) but not wear perfume if I’m not feeling great, although sometimes I’ll also mix oils into lotion and wear that, and I keep premixed lotion with ylang & orange in my bathroom and that’s my basic daily lotion, so I always smell like that at least.

I have a couple of perfumes I keep around for chest colds if I am in the mood for perfume: vintage Opium and vintage Cinnabar. Of course, I have been known to wear vintage Opium when I just feel like it, too.

But a lot of times if I am unwell, I skip perfume. Don’t want any negative associations….

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. It’s gray and rainy here in L.A. and I’m in Eau de Protection from a very generous NSTer to ‘protect’ me from the weather. Last night I wore L’Occitane’s Fleur d’Or Acacia from another generous NSTer, which is so pretty and smells very natural. Bonus is that it fulfills a two-week old CP. Is anyone else looking more closely at birds after the latest CP? I know I am, and spring was the perfect time to do that CP. There are so many more birds around us that I could have done: blue herons, snowy egrets, Canadian geese that migrate each year and stop over in the Griffith Park golf courses. They are so big that my dog is very intrigued and cannot figure out what kind of creature they are. Not that I let her get close.

Me too, Denise. I thought it was the robins singing here, but it’s the finches right now. It looks like they set up a nest in a close-by cedar. They have access to one of my hummingbird feeders too; that’s pretty smart.

We also gave blue herons up here but I haven’t heard their song in person. The first time I saw an egret was in Hawaii; they’re a pretty cool bird. With Canada Geese, keep your distance if there’s babies around. When I was young, I had an “experience” with big daddy getting a bit upset with me. I must have gotten a too close.

Scary! I’ve heard geese can really bite. Guard gueese. The ones the dog and I see are on the golf course (along with coyotes and deer and golfers moving blithely among them all) and we are on the other side of a chain link fence running along a bridle path. When we move into the hillside trail, there can be rattlers. A guy hiking down warned me going up that there were two crossing the trail and I got to see the tail end of the second one disappearing into a rock crevice. Counted 7 rattles (one for each year). The dog was very interested but the tone of me screaming “NO!!!” stopped her cold. I was already holding her leash pretty tightly.

Happy Orthodox Easter to those who celebrate 🐥🐰

Our Sunday morning dip in the hot tub was graced with the presence of a ruby-crowned kinglet, who came very close to us so we could admire his handsomeness! Temps up to 80 all week here, too, with rain every day and, of course, severe storms possible. We just planted our ‘cool-weather’ veggies! 🥕🥦🫛🥬Crazy!

SOTD is one of my favorites, the first scent I bought as an adult, only available for a few years in the mid-70’s, and the first scent I bought BUB’s of when fragrances became available online and on eBay, vintage Nina Ricci Bigarade. Bitter orange + oakmoss = ❤️.

Headed back outside before the storms come . . . Enjoy the evening!

Testing Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere against CBIHP Room With a View today. I pick up the hay scent so much more in the latter when I smell it against Viole Nere — against Epona, Room With a View smelled much more like a straight-up violet, though the hay is always noticeable.

I think the next matchup will be Viole Nere against Bois de Violette. Trying to decide if I have enough classic violets in my collection, so I don’t have to spend the $$$$ on Viole Nere. It is lovely, though. Epona is FB-worthy, I think.

Back in Shalimar l’Essence again today from the never ending bottle. I swear, every time I spray this I think, “Well, that’s a thunk,” but no. There’s still an infinitesimal bit at the bottom and that amount never seems to change. It’s the exact opposite of my gas tank. That first quarter of a tank lasts forever, feels like it could take me cross country. But that LAST quarter of a tank might only get you a half a mile…

It’s also camper cleaning day. Joy. 🙃

This week’s CP will be easy for me … or hard, since Hermes is by far the most represented house on my shelves. But this morning I’m testing vintage Jardins de Bagatelle edt, courtesy of a lovely NSTer. White florals are often difficult for me, but apparently when they’re this well blended with yellow florals they work wonderfully. Spring in a bottle! (Or vial, as the case may be.)

Today is the last day of my violet comparison testing: Viole Nere against Bois de Violette. They’re probably the closest, although Viole Nere is less linear than Bois de Violette. The opening of Viole Nere is like Bois de Violette and Iris Silver Mist went away and had a love child. They’re converging now in the far drydown. One thing I’ve gotta say is that Viole Nere has fabulous staying power and uses quality materials. But nearly $400 CAD…I think Epona is higher on the list and less $.

Yesterday I checked my work inbox quickly just after I sprayed. When I opened my laptop again this morning, it smelled beautifully of violets. There are worse ways to start a Monday morning!

    I shouldn’t have much of a problem doing this week’s CP. 🙂

Getting a heavy hitter out of the way before the Hermes/JCE/CN week starts. So it was Loree Rodkin Gothic I today, from a tall bottle that says both ‘ambiance” and “eau de cologne.” Works fine on my skin. This is an intoxicating blend of amber, resins, patchouli, spices, boozy vanilla, and woods. It is a descendant of the Tabu school of perfumery – loud, sexy, spicy. Rodkin is a jewelry designer, I think she may be based here in L.A. but not sure.

Guerlain’s Shalimar Millesime Rose has popped up on their site in the “email me when in stock” category. Am not blind buying–the longevity rating on Fragrantica is mostly in the eternal category. I may be an outlier, but much prefer shorter-lived scents! Any time something’s rated eternal, it makes me think some heavy duty fixative (that may stab me in the sinuses) is in play.

I’m with you on the fear of very long-lasting fragrances, but I think we are in the minority.

I hear that. I like a little of everything, but really need to be in the right mood/weather/situation for a long laster.

I am excited to try this rose scent, probably will go for a decant since I love rose scents in theory and only a small slice of them in reality 🙂

Very warm – near 80 degrees – and very humid here today. I planted pansies in my front flower boxes as I always do in April and I felt like I couldn’t breathe it was so close. Pansies are cool-weather flowers that can withstand cold temps, but can they handle our unlike-April temps? Truly bizarre!

Lots of flowering shrubs and trees here. The magnolias are finally waning and I am honoring their beauty today in EL Sensuous edt. The edit version is light and airy and I smell a prominent magnolia note – that’s why I ❤️ it in the Spring.

There’s threats of severe storms over the next 3 days + rain the rest of the week. 🤞for the best! Stay safe to all!

It was 76 degrees here yesterday. It felt like the middle of May!

Watching clouds creep across the sky this afternoon. Rain is rumored for tomorrow. Sure hope that is the case.

Pre-construction demolition continues in the vacant lot. I saw more bushes and shrubs getting torn out this afternoon. There’s also a road closure nearby to keep “civilian” traffic away from the construction equipment. IDK how long the road closure will last.

SOTD = Agent Provocateur Eau Provocateur EdT.

Oy! Did they say how long the construction will last? Way way back when I was working in NYC and had no qualms about taking a nice walk uptown, I stopped by an Agent Provocateur shop and to my dismay, there were no perfumes!

No idea how long the construction will take. But if the weather cooperates, it should go fairly quickly, all things considered.

Back about 15 years ago, Nordies used to have some Agent Provocateur perfumes. Now the only place I can reliably find them is on Evil Bay.

Trying a sample of Goutal’s Un Matin d’Orage EdP. I thought i might like it more than the EdT, but nope. There’s something rounded with a slight warmth (vanilla) in the EdP – it is pretty but loses the cool, watery thing I love in the EdT.
    I adore a watery floral.

Adding Un Matin d’Orage EdT to the Wish List.

It is really pretty rare that I like an EdP better than an EdT…
