Friday scent of the day 3/6

Posted by Robin on 6 March 2026 159 Comments

Happy Friday! It’s also the European Day of the Righteous, plus The Day of the Dude. Our community project for today: Take it easy, man. (This is a repeat from 2020.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

For letting the world's troubles melt away (and for appropriately low mental effort) I'm wearing what I wore on the Day of Dude in 2020: Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate.

Reminder: on 3/13, we're doing ink. Wear something with an ink note, or that is described as inky, or was inspired by ink, or that you think is inky, or interpret this project in some other creative way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2026, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Love this picture – the Dude blissfully listening to the sounds of a bowling alley (and about to lose his new rug).

I layered Lush Karma (solid) with Tam Dao. The former is the hippiest fragrance I have, and the latter is a very zen scent.

    Other connections:

    1. Dudeism is supposed to be a form of Taoism/Daoism, so yes, I am making a pun with “Dao” in Tam Dao.

    2. The concept of karma was adopted by Taoism.

    3. Tam Dao is a place in Vietnam.

“And what was all that s*** about Vietnam? What the f*** has anything got to do with Vietnam?”

    Hello and tgif!
    Cp sotd is Shiseido Zen.
My skin should definitely take the hint and take it easy, I have been getting some huge pimples here and there! I thought those puberty troubles were light years behind me! What sucks even more is that other than being unsightly, they also hurt. Ugh. Sorry bout the mini rant guys.

Good morning. I have two opposite end of spectrum fragrances on:left wrist is Coromandel Eau de Parfum from my now-low sample, weight wrist is a dab of vintage Gardenia – not the Les Exclusifs but I found a vintage small bottle that is definitely older than Les Exclusifs.
Gardenia is a beautiful fragrance, I am surprised at how fruity it is. No matter how I try it just doesn’t “click” with me the way my other “dramatic” florals do such as 1932 or Beige does. You all know well too well that fragrance liking depends so much on personal tastes and preference. Some perfumes are so beautiful but something in it just makes it not the best choice for me such as is the case of Gardenia with me.
I cannot wait for the swap meet, part of me wants to part with my unicorns and part of me doesn’t. We shall see.
Does anyone know where I can find (and yes I will pay accordingly, I know the reality) where I can find a pure parfum bottle of Beige, 1932 or Jersey?
The only ones I can find are Sycomore, Coromandel, Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles. My SO wants to gift me an extrait bottle as an early birthday present – so I can open it and use it. I refuse to open my so beloved and treasure bottle of pure parfum Beige until I find another bottle I can actually use. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I need to look around, as I think a lovely NST’er may have send me a sample of Gardenia and I can’t remember what it is like! Actual gardenias are probably my favorite scent. Let it be whispered that Coromandel has yet to reveal its special magic to me. I am a patchouly fan, but somehow we don’t connect. Maybe you and I will be Gardenia/Coromandel Evil Perfume Twins! 🙀😹

I love Les Exclusifs but for some reason I absolutely love browsing through the internet and looking, contemplating and admiring the back then “special” Chanel perfumes such as Gardenia, Bois des Iles and Cuir de Russie and #22 are the ones I can think of right now. I remember as a child the ubiquitous #5 or Coco or Even #19, the “usual” ones in the lineup. And I remember that seeing a bottle of #22 or Cuir de Russie were like the “unicorns” in perfume shops. This is all pre-Exclusifs of course. The aforementioned perfumes have somehow felt so special when spotted in between the regular, always available standard ones. Looking back at the history of Chanel, and throughout all these decades and generations there are many different bottle variations on these pre-Exclusifs #22 or Gardenia perfumes. Such is the case of my little bottle of Gardenia. I bought it because that little bottle seemed to be a rare find.

No CP points for me: I’ve been working extra shifts this week to fill in for employees on vacation, so on Sunday I picked five work-safe Serge Lutens scents and have been wearing those. Today it’s Écrin de Fumée — tobacco and cocoa powder, how could you not love that?

My own collection: for about ten years I was obsessed with the line and bought at least a bottle a year, so now I have 15 or so. It’s not what it used to be, but there were a lot of amazing scents that aligned perfectly with my taste.

Catching up on yesterday’s posts before taking the dog to the park. Very windy here in L.A. Hopefully no fires (shudders) get started. I don’t have any of these but…
I think Uli would wear Escentric Molecule 01 by Geza Schoen because it’s a German scent (and perfumer) and kindof revolutionary, which might be close to his anarchism, but he would steal the bottle.
Maude might wear Secretions Magnifiques because her art likes to shock people with its sexual references but it might fit The Dude too, oddly enough, since there is a milky quality to it. Arrgghh I don’t really want to go there.
So instead I’m going to hunt down a Kerosene sample that has a strong coffee note (maybe Follow or something similar) in a hat tip to Kahlua and White Russians. And you’re absolutely right, Lesliesse, the Dude mixed it with half-and-half, not regular milk.
This sure has been a fun CP and I look forward to reading everyone else’s choices.

      DH, both are inspired choices!

Also, I didn’t mean to get too precious. The grocery store scene with him in his bath robe and the check for under a dollar were quite memorable for me. Later at Maude’s when he’s told to make himself a drink, he specifically asks if there’s half & half.

I’m in Mona di Orio Dojima. I miss this house. This is an unusual fragrance that’s surprisingly easy to wear-rice with jasmin and clary sage. Wears close to the skin and has great longevity. Wish I could go back in time to the sale at Etiket, where they had all of these.

    Happy Friday!

I’m running errands today but otherwise, takin’ it easy, man in Tauer Incense Extreme from a cool first release bottle. It’s very 70’s looking, with incense rising on the label.

I’m also very happy about my Perfume Fort organization project with new spice racks that have a lip to protect bottles (somewhat) from falling. It’s also forcing me to simplify so the perfume is easier to see and hopefully more likely to be worn😊

The Dude is my hero. He has a stunning lack of ego and therefore needs no externals to prop it up.
He’s unfazed by opinions and meets the snarling criticism and judgmental dismissal by those in higher social circles with equanimity. He’s completely content with his life choices, his hobbies, and his friends. 99.9% of us wish we could say the same.

He’s uninterested in the standard trappings of success as defined by Western culture- the McMansion, the flash car, insider trading and financial gain, letters behind his name, getting ahead while stepping on others, published books/papers, awards, or the adulation of mindless minions and sycophants. He just wants to “be” in the most philosophically Eastern way.

It’s easy to overlook The Dude, to discount him as some nonsensical left over 70’s toking neerdowell, but his heart is filled with goodness, patience, and loyalty. His sweater/robe trail behind him like ecclesiastical vestments as he ambles along, loose jointed and at his rumpled ease, his jellies slapping the pavement, his long hair buffeted by the drama surrounding him. He stays true to who he throughout the film, despite temptation. In a mean world, he is an unexpected and welcome prize, and possibly the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

As for perfume, I’m focusing on the most poignant scene, which made me both laugh and cry, in which The Dude and Walter let fly Donny’s ashes from the Folgers can. Seems appropriate to wear CSP Café Vanille for the coffee scented ashes and the deceptive simplicity of the scent.

“The Dude Abides” in my heart and on the silver screen, forever and ever, Amen.

Spring Forward gives me a hopeful, spring-is-here feeling, and Fall Back reminds me that autumn is gorgeous annd I should enjoy it, and that winter’s rest will bring renewal to my garden.

I’ve never seen the movie but I chose an easy, laid back scent for the CP. Carner Barcelona D600 fits any occasion, offends nobody except those looking to be offended, and hums along quietly all day.

    Hello fragrant friends,
Back from visiting my sister and being her nurse and taking care of her senior kitty, Miso.

She is mending well if slowly. It was so cold in Northern Florida and so warm when I got home the other day.

Lab work early this morning, now showered and dressed and wearing Indochine for the day since I brought no fragrance with me.

It’s a vintage bottle. When I worked in retail many moons ago, I used to spray myself down at the drugstore before my shift every once in awhile.

My bottle has the blue wavy cap. I’ve seen other bottles online marked as pour femme or pour homme. Mine says Quartz by Molyneux.

I must watch The Big Lebowski one day. I vaguely thought I must have seen it, because I’ve seen most of the Coen Brothers’ movies, but with everything I’ve learnt about The Dude in the last few days, I know I haven’t. I wonder what I thought about this CP back in 2020??
I’m thinking about Neroli Outrenoir for today. I’ll be out in the evening and I might wear SL’s Rose de Nuit. It’s lovely, but needs the right occasion.

I wanted something chill and zen so I am wearing L’Artisan Tea for Two, the new version which I think like better than vintage..! Sadly I only have a small decant of it, have been hunting for a bottle with no luck, but it’s nice to have at least a little bit of it. It’s such a great cup of smoky black tea goodness, bottled up.

As a “The Big Lebowski” agnostic, I felt stumped as I surveyed my shelves with the character in mind. But then EL Tuscany per Donna caught my eye. I might claim some points for the sweetness (like a White Russian) and the musk-amber hippie vibe lurking beneath all the ’90’s peachy-florals. My favorite quote from the film: “Do ya have to use so many cuss words?” 🙉

After reading so many posts referring to scenes or quotes from the film that inspired this week’s cp, I wondered if I was perhaps the only person totally unfamiliar with this movie. Then, thankfully 🙏, I read Calypso’s post yesterday and realized I was not alone. 😅

Earlier in the week I had followed Robin’s link and learned about ‘dudeism’ and decided I would wear Barbara Bui Le Parfum for today’s cp, my favorite yoga fragrance, a skinscent with soft amber woodsy notes and a touch of incense.

Then yesterday as I was reading Robin’s post, I noted that this was a repeat from 2020. I had no recollection of this one before and decided to read the posts from that day to learn more. Well, lo and behold, I guess I did post that day in 2020 after all, and here’s what I posted back then:

‘Count me in the group of those who’ve not seen The Big Lebowski, so I wasn’t quite sure of the gist of this cp. I was going to go with one of my patchouli scents, but instead decided on Barbara Bui Le Parfum. A quiet, simple, easygoing fragrance that lies close to the skin, its soft and warm sweet amber is a comforting hug on a cold, windy but sunny day, and the incense note puts me in an Om frame of mind.’

This sure did give me my chuckle of the day and, yes, that’s what I’m wearing today, too!😆🤣😂

    Sending smiles 😊🙂😏your way!

Love it! What are you going to do about it?

I actually smelled the Peeps products on Monday when I was at the mall. There were A LOT of them! In any case, since I have coupons, I decided to buy a few items: shapeable soap, foaming hand soap, mini body spray and hand sanitizer!

The Big Lebowski is the favorite movie for my husband and for me. I still remember renting it ~1999 and we were completely mesmerized. I thought it was the funniest thing I ever saw. And we watched it over and over and for at least the first few times, I kept noticing nuances that I had not noticed before, like the date on the check the Dude writes in the grocery store (for his half and half) is 9/11 and that was before 9/11. (I just love the look the clerk gives him when he checks out, and the mild mustache.)

But there a lot of good themes in the movie. And the music is fantastic too.

I have never been to Los Angeles but the movie is in part a homage to the old film noir mysteries based in LA. I am working my way through my Perfumehead sample box and the themes of that company are a lot LA/California. Today, I wore Cosmic Cowboy in honor of the Stranger (Sam Elliott). Take ‘er easy!

No bowling for me, I am enjoying a beverage in my private residence.

I thought it was hysterical at the time, but don’t think I gave any thought at all to the broader themes until many years later.

One of the many articles I read on the subject this week:

I just watched the movie and finished right now, my second time watching it.
2 hours ago I literally watched the scene with The Dude writing a check for a mere half and half – and I did not look at what date He wrote. That is kind of crazy that He wrote 9/11 on it and the movie was made before the attacks.

I was telling my husband and son, who are huge TBL fans, about our CP, and for some reason they mentioned the scene where Lebowski gets in the bubble bath and fires up a doobie and pops in a cassette tape (remember those?) of whale song. The peaceful interlude will not last, but anyway, so then I thought, well, any perfume with ambergris would work for the CP, including, of course, Balmain’s d/c Ambre Gris. Or any marine note (hello Hermes Epice Marine) or with that crushed roasted seashell note called choya nak, or anything beachy like Bronze Goddess, or tiny beach flowers, or Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt. The Dude touches all points of the universe at once, it seems.

Just got done watching the Big Lebowski – my 2nd time ever watching it – because of the CP. So that’s the only way I am CP compliant is by watching the actual movie. Have been in a powdery-sparkly veil of 1932 all day. I cannot stay away from that poor bottle. The rich Lebowski’s house, the other Lebowski – not The Dude – had a huge house with all kinds of antiques in it. All these rooms and decorations were very grand. Maybe 1932 could reflect the riches of the other Lebowski’s grand house?
