Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late January 2026

Posted by Robin on 24 January 2026 293 Comments

January can't last forever! (Let's not even talk about February.) While we're waiting for it to be over, our usual lazy weekend open thread. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the perfume that says "I don't mind being stuck inside because the weather is too awful to leave the house", whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Blanche. But I do mind being inside because then I can’t walk like I did today even though it was 3 degrees F

I walked this morning too and it was -12. Granted it was just the 2.5 blocks to get my latte🤣 but still!
      Stay warm!

I walked two and a half miles. I wanted to do more but the skin on my legs started to hurt so I hightailed it back to my car after 50 minutes.

Honestly, I hate the cold and snow as much as you do. But I have made such great health strides in the past seven months that I don’t want to backslide so I get myself out there!!!

SL Rahat Loukhoum. Staying inside because of the extreme cold. I invited a friend over for brunch. Finishing my book, There are Rivers in the sky by Elif Shafak. I think this one is one of her best. I love her!!!
The story line is very interesting and she is an amazing storyteller, I highly recommend.

Hi Hera, first of all you smell wonderful. I don’t see Rahat mentioned that often anymore, but it’s one that I’d love to own in a bell jar someday. Perfect as a cozy winter day fragrance.

Second, thanks for the book rec. Like LTSG, I have added it to my library hold queue.

Thank gosh January can’t last forever! This is the time of year where Christmas is over, my birthday is over and I am just ready for spring already! At least the days are getting longer. 🌞
After my shower I think I’ll go with Coromandel. I haven’t worn it yet this winter. Have been seeing lots of comments with love for Chanel lately, so it’s inspiring me to revisit those that I have on hand.
We are supposed to hit a high of zero today, which is an improvement from yesterday’s high of -7.
Got some exciting news this week. I will be teaching nursing students back on my old unit starting the end of March. Although I have zero desire to go back to inpatient nursing. Ever.😈 I think (hope?) it will be fun to back on the unit seeing it from different perspective.

    Wearing L’Artisan Saffran Troublant.

Brutally cold here right now. It feels like minus 7 degrees. The snow storm is arriving tomorrow morning and temperatures will be in the low 20s for the next couple of weeks. I just declined an invitation from my sister to go ice-skating with my nieces this afternoon. There is no way I would leave the warmth and comfort of home to be freezing outdoors for hours. I am sure they will have lots of fun.

It has been a very tough week, because Kito kitty is sick. I rushed him to the vet on Monday because he was peeing blood and crying in pain. He was diagnosed with crystals and sediments in the urine and bladder. He is now on pain medication and a new forever diet for the urinary track. He barely drinks water and he is totally ignoring his new water fountain. I am very stressed since he is not improving much. His vet asked me to be very patient because it is going to take a while for him to feel better.

    Happy weekend! 🌻

Not sure what kind he’s on. Both of my cats had urinary issues and are now on prescription Hill’s c/d Multicare Stress Urinary Care for about a year or so and are doing well on it. They both like the dry and also eat the wet food ocean fish version once a day.

Kito was initially given Royal Canin Urinary Track SO dry and wet food, but he did not like them that much. That was changed yesterday for Prescription Hill’s and Purina Proplan Urinary Care wet and dry food in different flavors for him to try. So far he is eating the Prescription Hill’s more than the other brand, so I am sure he will be on the Prescription Hill’ from now on.

Oh no, poor kitty! Male cats seem to have a poorly designed urinary system, in general. I haven’t had a cat with this problem but had one who couldn’t pee (a “blocked tom,” as they called him) and it was a matter of GET TO THE EMERGENCY VET HOSPITAL NOW. I do know how horrible the pain is for (human) men to have kidney stones, also requiring an ER visit, and so I can imagine how bad your kitty’s pain was. I really hope he settles on a food he likes and that he quickly improves.

After all the pomegranate talk I decided to look for one in the supermarket. They were $8.99 each so I bought fresh apricots instead and am subsequently wearing Daim Blond. Because the summer has been so rubbish (11C and raining ) I have been going to a few movies and saw Is This Thing On? yesterday, the new Bradley Cooper film with Laura Dern and Bill Arnett about a couple adapting to divorced life. It was a good, solid movie and quite tender. Hope everyone stays warm and has a happy weekend.

One of our sons recommended One Battle After Another and I really liked it. In honor of Leo, I have fished out an old men’s flannel checked bathrobe from the closet, washed it, and will offer it to that son, who has a bit of a Dude-esque wardrobe and already likes big wool cardigans.

I watched One Battle After Another last night with husband and adult daughter. My daughter and I quite liked it, husband liked it less, as he has a tendency to point out flaws in the plot and the political slanting was not to his liking. (Just to say, some of the stuff in our real world surprises me that it even happens so I can suspend some disbelief for a movie.) I also thought Leo’s character reminded me of The Dude.

$8.99 NZD? That is not very different from what they cost here, and sadly, I would have paid it…I buy a grapefruit and a pomegranate every week until the poms disappear from the stores, and the pom at least will probably last me through the week if it turns out to be a good one.

Actually grapefruits have gotten expensive here too. It’s all expensive.

We have a grapefruit tree. Wish I could send some your way. We also have two neighbors with gf trees who don’t eat them (it can interfere with some medications) and a lot of them fall and rot. I have gotten permission to pick them and I hand out bags but I can’t get them al. There is a group called Fallen Fruit in L.A. that you can call and they’ll come pick your fruit and distribute it to the needy. I have told my neighbors about that.

How nice to have a tree! I tried to grow a calamansi and did keep it alive for two years, but it is hard without a greenhouse. I might try a kumquat tree next, but it’s probably hopeless.

Like Springpansy said, it’s quite cold in the PNW so for the moment I am batch cooking. The oven’s on and I am roasting some chicken thighs, and making rice and soup. Later I’ll go for a walk all bundled up. SOTD is Twilly.

You know that phrase, “I’ll do that when hell freezes over”? Well… it’s cold enough that I think we’re officially there. ❄️
I skipped the farmers market this morning and helped out at the soup kitchen instead—when it’s this cold, half the vegetables tend to be frozen anyway.

Today’s plan: stay toasty, retreat into my books, and rotate between hot chocolate, tea, and coffee.

If you’re in the snow belt too, sending warm wishes your way.

Smelling especially good in Chanel No. 22. This could be one of the longest lasting Chanels I own!?

    Busy cleaning house today.

SOTD is Eau des Merveilles Elixir. I thought the amber flanker was coming in the mail today, but that won’t be here until Monday. Anyway, Elixir is good too.

I mentioned it earlier this week, but I must recommend the book I just finished. It is Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. In short, it is about an elderly man that moves to a small town in Georgia and no one there knows why. He meets people by giving them portraits of themselves that he buys at a local coffee shop. He soon becomes friends with many from the city. By his acts of kindness, he feels he is giving them a taste of what heaven will be like. Wonderful book.

I like that entire Hermes line! Good stuff and great execution on all the flankers too. They retain the DNA of the original but present a different facet to the limelight each time. I owned the original Merveilles but gave it to a son’s girlfriend because I didn’t wear it enough. But that salty herbal vibe…really nice. It also reminds me a bit of Bronze Goddess, which I still do have a whopping bottle of, thank goodness.

That’s funny that you say that because I don’t really care for the original Bronze Goddess, but I love Bronze Goddess Nuit since it has some floral in it. I sampled the new one this year when I was in Macy’s recently and that was okay.

Had a 2-day internet/cable tv outage. It was cold (-13), but no snow or ice storm. Ventured out today since the temp got up to 7, and service was restored during my absence.
The outage was good for reading: started & finished Seascraper by Benjamin Wood (163 pages…a novel or a novelette?) and definitely recommend. Then started Ferrante’s The Lying Life of Adults, which I’m motivated to finish.
Feeling relieved in Porter Sa Peau.

I’m thinking of blind buying a travel spray, so the stakes are pretty low, but I’d love to know if anyone recommends it. I love powder but musks are hit or miss for me, can’t do anything too sharp.

When I first began reading about fragrances online years ago, one of the most talked about scents on all the boards was Escada Collection, a soft musky gem with caramel and plum topnotes, floral in the middle, and tonka bean and woodsy base notes. I never hear about it anymore but that is my SOTD, a great choice for a very cold winter day.

Our temps made it all the way up to 5 today and we had a wonderful afternoon at the seed swap at the Chicago Botanic Garden. In addition to lots of free seeds, the lecture beforehand by Peg Davis of Snow Spring Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, a grower of heirloom tomatoes, was fascinating and taught us how to grow plants sustainably using alternate methods. (You can learn all about her and obtain her Peg O My Heart tomato seeds at https://seedsavers.org/peg-davis-the-tomato-lady/.). Earlier this week we learned an equally fascinating and easy method for winter sowing of native plants from a local sustainability garden consultant. So, despite the cold that will last all week, I am definitely thinking Spring! 🥗🥕🌶️🥒🌻🪻🌺

Hoping ☝️and praying 🙏 everyone in the path of this nasty snow/ice/bitter cold storm stays safe this weekend!

Laila, you attend the most fascinating events!! Thank you for telling us about them!
I love Escada Collection and have gone through bottles of it over the years. I like it better than the original Escada Margaretha Ley, which is all spicy white florals on me. The Escada Collection, by contrast, almost smells like a Lutens to me. It should really be too sweet for me, but somehow its complexity makes it work.

I actually much prefer the bitter cold than the punishing heat. You can put on layers (and look good too) if you feel cold but when you’re hot and suffocating, you can only do so much. I also hate to sweat. Ick.

Thank you to Kanuka for mentioning literary pomegranates during the CP. I was reminded of the A. S. Byatt novel Possession which is a favorite of mine. It has a minor theme around Persephone.

I’ve decided to reread it again. I have a good cry at the end of story every time. Totally worth it. 🥺💕

Keep warm for those of you under snow storm advisory.

I didn’t get around to participating to the pomegranate cp, however I had three choices, AP TdB, Banana Republic Velvet pomegranate which had escaped a decluttering last year and I found it very enjoyable and Friday I used my trusted Elie Saab Le Parfum resort collection (2017).

The news continue depressing but I want to share that a bi-partisan law at the house of commons has banned cages for laying hens and mother pigs. I contributed to the humane society UK and contacted my MP three times. I didn’t even vote for him but his office assured me he was in favor of the ban. I’m a vegetarian but it’s of course a matter of choice, however, I’ve always wondered why animals consumed should have a miserable life.

A gloomy Monday morning after a wet weekend. I was suffering from cabin fever yesterday so put a coat on the dog and went for a walk along the river in the pouring rain, listening to the water churn as it flowed over the weirs. As I drew close to the Greggs factory I got a strong whiff of instant coffee ( where it’s roasted) – the scent blows over the neighbourhood in a strong southerly. I ended up gazing at tree trunks that were streaked with rain, almost like tiger stripes. Lastly, passed the hockey fields where the USA women’s team beat NZ 2-1 in the finals ( more a wet rivalry than a heated one). Wearing JM Nectarine and Honey Blossom as I haven’t worn it in a long time.

Sotd PG Indochine + BumBum Crème

Watched the Mel Brooks, age 99, documentary on HBO max last night and laughed out loud many times. I haven’t seen all his movies but have enjoyed the ones I have. I highly recommend it. Very touching commentary on aging especially when you survive your spouse and bury all your friends. A very moving way to go into the last 6 mos before he turns 100. Hope he makes it like Dick van Dyke.

Richard Pryor wrote a lot of the most famous gags in that film. They had an interview with him before he died in 2005 at age 65 where he reminisced. Ben Stiller and Dave Chapelle talked about that during interviews.

Gosh you should watch the second. It talks about Anne’s passing, how he and Carl Reiner used to eat dinner together every single night in front of Jeopardy on tv trays. I fact Mel was with Carl when he died at home suddenly and the paramedics could t revive him.

A winter wonderland here for much of the day as the Chicago area had snow early from the northernmost area of the storm that’s covering much of the nation and then lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan. I think we’re about done for now, but temps will be plummeting again tonight. Despite the snow, a short drive took us to our favorite local diner for a late breakfast- somehow this place combines warmth and coziness with an incredible sense of community spirit and energy; I think of it as a place for Everyman❤️.

Keeping warm with Trish McEvoy No. 9 Blackberry and Vanilla Musk. Blackberry is my favorite berry note, and I have a blackberry fragrance for every season. No. 9 is my winter one for its cozy sweetness.

Hoping all in its path are staying safe from the storm. ☮️❤️☝️

Nasty weather here this afternoon. A front moved in around 2pm, bringing gusty wind and snow squalls. The temperature started dropping like a rock. Had been around 21F for the high. It’s currently around 8 degrees with a Real Feel of negative 18 degrees F.

Hung around with my brother yesterday for a significant chunk of the day. We decided that there was no way he was grilling steaks for my birthday, so he bought me dinner instead. Then we watched a bunch of anime.

SOTD = still in CK Euphoria. I am enjoying it, but think something like Kenzo L’Elephant would be more suited to the current weather.

Cold here in Texas though we are warmer than most of the USA, for sure .We had a frosting of ice over everything. Luckily, I planned ahead and didn’t need to go out. I am also off the weekend – I work the next one.

I bought a new iPhone since the battery on mine is dying mid-day. At least it has been 4 years since I bought a phone. One of the aspects of technology I dislike is that the charger design keeps evolving and I end up with charging cables and other accessories that do me no good. Had to buy new stuff on Amazon.

I did stop in Neiman Marcus when I went to the mall for my phone and browsed the perfumes. I successfully avoided buying anything. I rarely make decisions at the counter – too overwhelming unless I see something I already intended to purchase. I have to get samples and vet the perfumes over days, or even years in some cases. I do like making purchases at the physical store so they stay in business, though in Neiman’s case it might be not enough to help them.

Continuing on my weekend sampling, I am wearing Liis Bo on the left wrist and Perfumehead Canadian Tuxedo on the right. I may cave and buy Bo this year. I suppose if I have been going back to my sample for 2 years, it’s a sign. It has a “gerbil cage” cedar note but I like it. Canadian Tuxedo reminds me of something I already have or tried before.

I am looking forward to pulling out my cold weather scents for the next 2 workdays.

    Stay warm and safe!

Wearing Sylvaine Delacourt Virgile for the CP. It’s a vanilla, but a light one, with sage, rosemary and citrus notes. I think it’s a fairly safe fragrance.

I made it through my 4 day stretch of Cheirosa 62. Wore Narciso Rodriguez for her yesterday and now wearing no 5 edp. We got a foot of snow here and probably going to get a little more but not much. I think Lyric will be tomorrow’s SOTD.

About the same snow we got. It is enough 🙂

SOTM is Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile. The name is misleading, unless you want to consider this an iris chypre, in which case, be my guest! It was created in 2004 by that lazy layabout Francois Kurkdjian and Francoise Caron.
But it is a golden fragrance with loads of citrus and oakmoss and florals (I can’t discern the iris) in the Italian style and I find it warming on this cold morning,
A happy belated birthday to Jalapeno!

🥶Bitter cold today but very, very 🌞 ☀️, which made me think ‘yellow’ and made my hand reach for Creamy Meringue as my SOTD. This primarily lemony custard scent with soft midnotes of frangipani, passion flower and freesia, ending with a bit of cedar, is another of the DKNY Sweet Delicious fragrances inspired by recipes for creamy cupcakes. 😋😋

Happy to be home all day except for a quick (very cold) trip to the post office that told me I’d be very happy to be home all day! Homemade chicken soup for dinner will reinforce that choice. 🥣

    Happy almost February 💕!

Shalimar L’Essence for me today and this weekend! To me, it smells warm and cuddly. The ice we got on Saturday night has melted but it’s going to get REALLY cold (for us) tonight. Down to 13F. I’ve covered my roses with frost cloth!

Continuing with SMN fragrances this week in Aqua Di Cuba, a fragrance that ticks both CP boxes (my SMN week, culminating in Melograno for our pomegranate CP and a lovely/office appropriate fragrance given to me by a generous NSTer💕).

Had a wild ride on the weather rollercoaster today! It was a frigid minus 11 degrees F here for a low, but then the temperature shot up to around 43F this afternoon. No more dripping faucets here, whoo hoo!

SOTD = still in CK Euphoria and wearing Bum Bum Cream on my shins.

    super late sotd = Opium

A friend was cleaning out a drawer and found an ancient mini bottle with a few drops left inside.

The floral notes are glorious for a few minutes, then it smells (ahem) extremely (ahem) dirty (ahem) in the most wonderful way. 😁
