Friday scent of the day 1/23

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2026 142 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Pie Day! Birthdays: Stendhal, Édouard Manet, Derek Walcott. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a pomegranate note, if you have one. Thanks go to Laila for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Pomegranate is my favorite fruit, and other than grapefruit, the only fruit I still eat regularly. But, like many of you, I do not have a pomegranate fragrance that I love. I'm in the only one I could locate: Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir.

Reminder: 1/30 will be Play Nice Friday...wear a fragrance which, while it still bears the stamp of the perfumer’s art, is more or less guaranteed to offend no-one. (Suggested by pyramus.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2026, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
Like Robin I am in the only pomegranate I could locate and from a tiny sample too, CK Euphoria.
This week was a hard one! But it made me give my collection a good throughout look and saw some things I forgot I had so that’s great.

I love pomegranates and your SOTD, Robin. I chose an old favourite-Annick Goutal’s Quel Amour! It brings me right back to the time I bought it which might be half my lifetime ago. I bought it off e bay, and it had a spelling mistake in the title. I remember how excited I was to win it. I hade the matching body lotion too. It’s a nice memory.

I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else is wearing. Hope you all have a good day.

Yes, it is! One of their classic bottles. I remember the story-it was composed by Camille Goutal, and her husband had strewn her staircase with peonies and roses. It’s a beautiful scent. I feel like it’s too young for me know-it really reminds me of a certain time of my life. But I still love both peonies and roses.

Pretty sure I don’t have any pomegranate scents, so I’m in the only red-fruit scent I own, Tom Ford Lost Cherry. I think it’s just delightful — not sweet cherries but sour ones, a refreshing change of pace.

Pyramus have you ever tasted Luxardo cherries? Very different from regular maraschino cherries. If you like a more sour cherry the L ones may be something you enjoy.

I’m thumbing through the paper and scrolling the BBC’s list of anticipated book releases for the year. Half His Age has caught my eye—I’ve read her other book my mom died or some title like that—and Yesteryear is firmly on my list when it’s released.

I couldn’t find my Jo Malone to twin with Perfumelover67 today, so I’m switching things up. Since Robin mentioned it’s Stendhal’s birthday, I’m pairing a Stendhal novel with a perfume instead. Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) feels just right with Chanel No. 19: sharp & ambitious. Passion is tightly controlled.

Like many of us, I’m in the only fragrance I own with a pomegranate note, PdE Aziyadé. I only have a one ml sample, and I ordered that many years ago while exploring tobacco scents. The pomegranate in it is very evident in the opening blast, but is gone in less than five minutes, leaving behind a really nice, very PdE-esque pipe-tobacco-and-light-incense blend. Fragrantica calls it sweet, but it isn’t particularly on me, and I never sussed out any of the other notes listed (orange, almond, plum, dates, caraway, cinnamon … the list goes on). If a bottle appeared suddenly in my life I’d wear it occasionally, but I don’t plan on acquiring more.

Sadly I cannot even remember if I tried that one, and now I’m very behind on PdE.

    https://poetrybyheart.org.uk/poems/how-to-cut-a-pomegranate

I was taken by how many writers have referenced pomegranates ( Edith Wharton wrote a ghost story called Pomegranate Seed ( which doesn’t actually include any references to pomegranates. It’s free, online if you’re interested) ,Oscar Wilde a short story collection called A House of Pomegranates, D H Lawrence a poem called Pomegranate and many other poems( some related to pomegranates, others to mythology). But here’s a poem by Scottish/ Pakistani writer Imtiaz Dharker that is very fruit focused. If you drop down to “ resources” you can hear her read the poem. I’m matching the poem with Un Jardin apres le Mousoon.

I like pomegranates but they are so much work. And I don’t have anything with pomegranate so I’m going fruit-adjacent and wearing Delta of Venus by Eris Parfums for the guava note. I didn’t grow up eating guava, pomegranate, passion fruit or even mango. They all seem exotic to me still.

Having spent my youth in Western Pennsylvania, I had never even had avocado prior to moving to So Cal at age 14. But I learned to love those fruits you listed all starting with avocado! Have you smelled LP’s SPeachless? It’s got a long list of fruits in it including peach regardless if its name as well as lychee (which I only tried this summer in a lychee martini in a Chinese restaurant). Have you had a new discovery like that?

Ditto on the avocado, even though I grew up directly north of California.

I have not tried any of LP’s fragrances. SPeachless sounds interesting. I often like lychee! But the base notes include patchouli and cannibis neither of which I usually appreciate in a fragrance.

Cozy today in Silky Woods. Not in the mood for JM Pomegranate Noir.
We used pomegranates in lots of food in Iran.

Fessanjan with walnuts was yummy. Sharbat over ice was so cooling in the heat. And juice was mixed with yogurt and water for a cooling drink. We are lucky in Los Angeles to be able to enjoy these easily.

Gotta get some laundry going here and then English class later today at library.

    Good Friday, all.

Thank you for all your supportive comments this week. The situation is dire, and for the moment I don’t see it improving. There is some good news: it’s getting warmer (less power is needed for heating), and I also heard about some foreign generator donations.

I’m very glad it’s the weekend. It was our provincial holiday on Monday so it was only a four-day week, but the rest of the country wasn’t on holiday, so Tuesday was hectic and the rest of the week was no better.

I didn’t realize I had a fragrance (aside from my sample of Melograno) with a pomegranate note until I checked Parfumo this week. Traversee du Bosphore! So that’s what I’m wearing today. I tried really hard and just detected a hint of pomegranate in the opening – powdery tart and a touch of green.

Keeping my fingers crossed that anyone in the path of this ice storm manages to stay warm and with power this weekend!

Wearing the lovely Santa Maria Novella Acqua Di Colonia Melograno.

As I confessed earlier in the week, I did not know that Melograno is Italian for Pomegranate but I am thankful that it took me down a nicely scented path of SMN fragrances.

Also, this fragrance reminds me of Christmas candles from my childhood. As an adult, when I’ve recognized that scent, I haven’t taken the time to figure out what it was, until now, thanks to this CP😊

Allô, you made me wonder whether or most probably when the CP was to invoke a happy childhood memory. Delighted to read that the CP sparks such happy memories of your childhood Christmases!

When I think of childhood Xmas candles, I think of real bayberry, which is surprisingly difficult to find. Plenty of things say they are bayberry but don’t smell right.

That’s interesting…sounds like Bayberry has more woods and spices than the “Melograno” scent that’s more fruity and perfumey (is that a word?).

Me too – my mother loved them particularly. The real thing is very expensive to produce, so I think that’s why they’re rare nowadays.

I’m wearing the very beautiful La Ravissante from MDCI. It leads with a pomegranate note and includes other exotic fruits, musk, a marshmallow note, and many beautiful florals. It’s got depth and I adore it. It was love at first sniff when I was testing perfumes from that line at Fumerie in Portland several years ago. (Where I got to meet our delightful Foxbins!). I seem to have a taste for that line, but I can’t usually find anywhere to try it out in person here in Houston. That was a fun opportunity. It is sweet, one must admit, but I find the citrus notes moderate it and it’s just plain pretty. It veers very “feminine”, if that matters to you.

Tough theme! I checked and I don’t have any perfumes with pomegranate note, so I went for pomegranate-adjacent connection: I am wearing an all natural attar from Persephenie, specifically Parijata – Vetiver attar that they don’t make any more. They still have few other attars in stock: https://persephenie.com/natural-perfumes/
The one I’m wearing is very earthy and dark, appropriate for the pomegranate loving queen of the underworld.

    SOTD = Serge Lutens Chergui

Someone (Glannys ?) mentioned this this week and I thought why not. I have the older bottle, not the Palais Royale one; it is quite good!

I had my haircut this morning so I feel like a human being again. I was supposed to go in mid-December but my cousin & family were around and I just did not have time to go then. January was also quite busy even though I’m supposed to put a small dent in my decluttering (which I didn’t). The upcoming snowmegamagastorm kicked me into high gear (for the haircut) and so here we are!

I stopped by Panera to get my “free” drink. I looked over at Wegmans and the parking lot was FULL! It felt like it was a Saturday afternoon but in fact, today IS Friday! Oy!

For those who are in the path of the storm, please stay safe and do not drive when you don’t really have to.

I had my haircut in December (my 6 year old gets trims at the salon regularly – me – I usually don’t have enough time for me). But before I had my haircut in December I talked about needing it for several months.

Hello, everyone!! It’s finally Fri-yaaayy!! Thankfully I finished work… It’s been a long week. I am a landscaper and work a very hard job. The second I finish my work I run to pick up my child from school/after school daycare. But today I have a little leeway and finished work earlier so I’m drinking my coffee now – then I have to shower and run get my child.
This morning I wore the original Sycomore EdT. I was lucky enough to score an authentic pretty full 75ml at a low price. It was a find of a lifetime. When I bought it I had no idea I was buying something so rare and hard to find. I also own the new 75ml bottle of the EdP. It’s a beautiful fragrance in both versions. They both smell like…. Two different versions of variations on the same fragrance. Smoky vetiver + grapefruit on me. Or grapefruity note. The old EdT is dense, darker, fuller, smokier. The new EdP is more polished, lighter in color and overall composition but it’s also very beautiful just more airy.
I also own 1957 and never ever reach for it. I had two but gave one away. I keep one as a reference and just to keep in my collection. People seem to love 1957. To me the opening is VERY reminiscent of #19. It’s like when they were making 1957 they took #19 as a reference. There is no way that I am imagining this connection. It’s so evident.
I used to wear #19 and Coco Mademoiselle some 20 years ago as a very young person.
I acquired a large bottle of #19 and it is vintage but the bottle is not beat up or anything at all. The bottle is in perfect condition. The juice is as fresh and nothing in it smells like it turned. It smells as fresh as if I had broken the seal on it right now. But the juice smells very very #19ish… Not for faint hearted. You really have to have an acquired taste in order to enjoy vintage #19 (and I don’t mean because it smells dated, how could #19 smell dated to anyone? And I don’t mean because it’s rancid or smells old. It’s very fresh and crisp but the geranium smells strong).
After I finish my coffee I will take a shower and slap on my breath-taking Coco Mademoiselle extrait. I am absolutely crazy about it. It has lychee but You seem when I see lychee listed as an ingredient in other perfumes – I expect a synthetic and generic notes. Right away. But in Coco Mad extrait it smells soooo juicy, every waft of Coco Mademoiselle extrait is like an Angel’s literal breath. I spoiled myself – I can no longer touch the EdP. Also before I even got the extrait I realized today’s Coco Mademoiselle (modern, recent) EdP lacks… Just lacks, it’s like a shadow of it’s former self. No lasting power, doesn’t waft that special way. From the most recent versions I much prefer the EdT – it lasts longer, is rounder, has more depth and has the most juicy of orange notes. Super yummy and juicy. But my absolute favorite is the extrait. Ohhh how good the extrait is. It’s so good that when I wear Coco Mademoiselle extrait I think of Coromandel but when I am wearing Coromandel I think about Coco Mademoiselle extrait.

I don’t have any perfumes with pomegranate. One of the only 3 perfumes my fiancé complained about not liking was Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, so I stopped wearing it years ago. I am wearing three spritzes of Jo Malone Sandalwood & Spiced Apricot, again.

I eat all the fruits. I haven’t eaten dessert in almost a decade, but I do eat whole fruit and very dark chocolate daily. Supposedly the sugars in fruits get absorbed by the body differently than added sugars or sweeteners, because of the fiber in whole fruit, so I read…and there’s the antioxidants and vitamins.

Since we are all on here mainly and typically because we share the same hobby: we love/wear/collect perfume or at least are interested in mainly perfume:
Name Your Holy Grail perfume (or fragrant or fragrance related) object(s). In other words name Your favorite treasures that You own (and treasure). Name the crown of Your collection etc.

Well the cold came in sooner and hit harder than yesterday’s forecasts indicated. I started dripping my faucets last night before I went to bed. When I woke up this morning, it was 8 degrees F for the air temperature, and the Wind Chill was around zero. Yuck! It didn’t warm up much more than that; I think the high was around 14F. Snow has been nearly non-existent. Been making a batch of Green Chile Stew this afternoon.

SOTD = CK Euphoria. I bought my bottle shortly after it came out, so I have the original formulation. Been enjoying this!

Robin, I’m delighted to hear that pomegranate is your favorite fruit because I have absolutely no idea why I suggested pomegranate as a community project. I don’t dislike them but I can’t remember the last time I ate one, and it’s not a scent note I ever remember searching for!

The only fragrance I knew I had with a pomegranate note was BBW’s Midnight Pomegranate, but in researching this note I was surprised to learn I actually had several. The one I chose for today was a real surprise: DKNY Sweet Delicious Pink Macaron. Its notes are nectarine and kumquat at the top, with midnotes of marzipan, pomegranate and rose, layered over tonka bean, amber, and woodsy notes. I used YR Pomegranate Red Berries shower gel and BBW’s Pink Cashmere body products (no pomegranate in this) to add some coziness on this bitterly cold day. I wouldn’t normally wear a ‘pink’ scent in mid-January but it’s all working quite well.👍

The Sweet Delicious collection also had Tart Key Lime and Creamy Meringue. I have these, too, since I enjoy gourmand scents occasionally and these were inexpensive and delightful fragrant treats.

Sharing Kris’s bitter cold weather with below 0 temps all day; bitter cold all next week with high temps only in the mid-teens but I’m grateful we’re not in the path of that brutal snow and ice storm and ☝️and 🙏 all of you in its path stay safe!

I wanted to wear something that smells of contrast to me for the CP, because holding, seeing, opening, smelling and tasting a pomegranate feels like a strange and lovely surprise every time I do it.
