Friday scent of the day 5/23

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2025 122 Comments

Happy Friday and happy World Turtle Day! Author birthdays today: Carl Linnaeus, Margaret Fuller, Pär Lagerkvist, Scott O’Dell, Margaret Wise Brown. Our community project for today: celebrate World Turtle Day with your fragrance, in whatever way you see fit.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm doing turtle habitat, again, in L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau de L'Artisan.

Reminder: 5/30 will be Rainbow Friday...wear something that makes you think of your favorite color. Bonus points if the color is in the name! Suggested by pyramus.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I wish I had some vintage Hermès Bel Ami in that tortoiseshell cocktail-shaker bottle for community points. Nothing turtlish about Guerlain Samsara but it’s what I felt like wearing today — it has a glow to it that will help fight off the weather, beating down rain and a shocking -1ºC with the windchill. In late May! This time last year it was 27ºC with an actual humidex.

We are definitely not as warm or sunny as we should be at this time of year either…I’m in a sweater for the start of memorial day weekend in the US. Ugh.

    Happy Friday everyone!
I’m continuing my turtles on a log woodsy theme in Memoirs of a Trespasser.
My bottle is about 8 years old and I’m now smelling a sharp sourness in the drydown that bugs me, after having it in my top ten for years. It’s very disappointing and makes me reluctant to order another bottle.

Oh NO! I’m sorry to hear this. Memoirs of a Trespasser has been one of my favorites from Imaginary Authors.

Turning perfumes are a sad part of our experience. I have perfumes I notice something a teensy bit off and then I’m torn between wearing them a lot before they go or so scared to wear them and find they are gone. It’s not so bad when sample or decant is off, but our full bottles… Perfume is ephemeral art. Love ‘em while you got ‘em

    Hello and tgif!
I am wearing Jimmy Choo parfum today as the bottle looks like a turtle shell.
I’ve always hated watching documentaries of baby sea turtles because of the brutal and heartbreaking nature of them being preyed on by seagulls. It must be so hard for the camera crew to resist helping those poor babies out to sea.

I don’t like animal documentaries in general…they are rarely happy. It is amazing there are sea turtles left.

    Turtles on the Beach- Songes

I am on the couch after a horrible night sleep binge watching sirens on Netflix-
It reminds me a little bit of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurie , with a comedy twist. Honestly, I love anything with Julianne Moore in it…

I couldn’t sleep last because my building turned on the heat in the middle of the night – it is cool here in the north east. And I woke up super hot.
So today I am in my pjs binge watching. But I am saving the last episode for another day.

She did some potent vetivers. It’s actually because of the CP and because I was reminded of another Les Nez scent earlier this week, that I remembered the Turtles. I have three small samples left.

Bright 🌞 for the first time in days + wrens and robins singing & nesting in several spots in our yard + lilacs still in bloom + the fragrant hanging white blooms of our nearby black locust tree getting ready to join the lilacs soon + amidst all this, a dip in the hot tub = Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!🎶

My SOTD for the World Turtle Day cp is JM Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Perfumer Christine Nagel commenting on fragrantica notes its ‘sea air, salty and mineral texture of sand and stone, scent of driftwood, and essence of woods and sea.’ To me, this says ‘turtle!’

Memorial Day weekend is when we traditionally bring out our summer lawn ornaments, so today the first ones out will be our 3 turtle ornaments that love to summer by our little waterfall.

Hope everyone can enjoy a nice lo-o-ong weekend! 🐢 🐢🐢

In Hiram Green’s Vivacious for the shape of the flacon and because I can imagine a tortoise happily munching on violets. I haven’t worn this in ages. The scent has somehow both mellowed and grown more complex. While there is still plenty of carnation, it’s playing more nicely with the other facets. Anyone else have an old bottle of Vivacious?

I can still handle only lighter scents, so I went with Un Jardin sur le Nil — a great “green summer dress” perfume, in my opinion.

I imagine my turtle is old and green. It took a dip in the river, swimming among lotus flowers. Then it hid in the bulrushes to snack on mango and carrots.

I didn’t know what to wear today until I saw the today’s picture. I immediately thought of Deseo by Jennifer Lopez. It’s a fruity aquatic. The bottle is what I associated with the picture. It’s doesn’t match with my heavy green knit sweater though. It’s still dreary and cold here. One more night of work and I am off for the weekend!

Happy Friday. I am extremely fond of turtles.
    Deep vintage Diorissimo parfum today.
I feel like there out to be a way to retrofit for the CP applying the philosophical concept of “infinite regress” (turtles all the way down) – only it’s perfumes all the way down.
    or not.
Also, I have an early memory of my grandmother having a perfume in a turtle shaped bottle. I can absolutely remember the scent. And of course I was fascinated by the turtle! A quick online search tells me it’s Avon Bird of Paradise cologne in the “treasure turtle” bottle.

I got nothing for the CP. It did make me wonder if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had fragrances… lo and behold they did! According to fragrantica, Leonardo’s was a chypre, Michelagelo’s a citrus aromatic, Donatello’s a woody aromatic, and Raphael’s an aromatic fougere! I’m cracking myself up!

SOTD is Dans Tes Bras. Very grateful to a NSTer for sharing this sample, I love it so and might have to get more.

SOTD is Bombay Bling! because foxbins mentioned it the other day. My turtle is happily munching on some mango in a garden.

Tea today is Black Gunpowder from Clipper Ship.

This has been a particularly long week at work and I’m looking forward to being outside in the garden all weekend. There are tomatoes that need planting, moss that need propagating, weeds that need pulling, mulch that needs spreading, and hydrangeas that need pruning. And lilacs that may need reinforcement after all of the rain we have had.

We are home from our first camping trip of the season (5 more planned!). For our 40th anniversary, we bought ourselves a new bigger tent and new incredibly comfortable (4″!!) sleeping pads for under our sleeping bags, and new chairs to hang out by the campfire. Had a great time.

I’m now showered and wearing Mediterraneo. My connection to turtles is that I wore it when we went to Hawaii for a week (right before COVID), where we stayed in a condo on a beach with many sea turtles. They were so wonderful to watch.

When my father died I kept hold of his wrist watches ( because I love watches even more than perfume) and the one he wore daily was a Certina which, since the 1960s, has carried an engraved turtle as its symbol ( strength, robustness etc). It’s not a particularly attractive watch and the turtle is probably the nicest thing about it but it has sentimental value. So, I’m wearing it and my father’s Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood perfume. Nice that turtle day and Linnaeus’s birthday fall on the same day give that Linnaeus described so many turtle species. For a nice weekend watch, try The Turtle Diary with Glenda Jackson and Ben Kingsley (1980s) about two people who rescue a turtle from London zoo.

Did I mention that I pre-ordered a Pope Leo XIV bobblehead? For some reason I thought it was coming in November 2025 (yes, I can wait); however, I have received a text saying I have a package. I don’t usually click on any links in text messages and I did not this time around either. The package has not yet arrived so … Anyway, I am not Roman Catholic even though I attended a Catholic school for most of my life.

I actually have a pet turtle story. A turtle appeared in the backyard after a particularly nasty rainstorm. Since turtles move very slowly, Oone may assume it had been traveling for quite a while, unless the wind actually picked it up and deposited it in a particular spot. Anyway, so as not to lose it, we tied a string somewhere on its body. I don’t believe we fed it anything because it was outside in the yard with plenty to eat. It lived for a while (don’t ask how long) and then went poof 💨.

Pope Leo bobblehead! 🙂 I, too, went to Catholic school though I am not Catholic, and same for my kid (though she’s in public now). Fun Leo fact that we laughed about in my household: Given Mr. Ockeghem’s professional interests, various news outlets kept calling him asking for comment on the papal conclave / Leo. (But, he is an historian, not in religious studies.) He had to keep telling them that if they wanted to know about Leo X, he could help, but not Leo XIV, and that all he knew about the conclave he’d learned from the movie.

For the CP Kenzo l’Eau, a 90’s classic, I must have replaced three or four times, a watery fruity floral and lightly spicy scent but I usually wear it in the heat of summer, the bottles is all transparent and like an aquarium. Tonight it’s RP Visa extrait which resembles Nirmala I find.

I’m not very creative and went with another Zoologist scent from the general turtle neighborhood, Chameleon. It’s pretty tropical and maybe goes with sea turtles more than the pond and marsh turtles I’m used to.

No turtles for me today, unless they are sitting amongst lilies of the valley. I’m in PdN Odalisque again. Busy week and the sample was out on the counter. Still only lasts about 2 hours on me; I like it while I can smell it, but money saved.

I don’t see why they would not enjoy sitting amongst the blooms!

Teflon kitty had her follow up vet appointment around lunchtime this afternoon. No more ear infection! However, she still has some fluid left inside her ear canals, which might be the source of the recurring infection. So a new medicine has been ordered to try and dry things out. Should have it sometime next week.

    Turtle time! 🐢🐢🐢

Another story about turtles and tortoises. This one takes place in St. Augustine, FL several years ago. It’s high summer, so ungodly amounts of heat and humidity. I’m doing the tourist thing and walking around the Castillo de San Marcos, which is an old Spanish fort built out of coquina. It sits right on the edge of the beach.

At one point, I look into the ocean and see a little sea turtle swimming around. Hard to tell just how big it is, but it looks to be basketball sized in my estimation.

SOTD = Vetiver Pamplemousse EdP Emotions collection by Zara & Jo Malone. A crisp, refreshing scent which would have worked perfectly in the horrid weather of that Florida summer when I spotted a sea turtle in the surf.

Teflon also got a hairball remedy this afternoon, but that was a FAIL. She wanted nothing to do with it, and opening the tube made a nasty sticky mess.

It is hairball season. My Void Boy grooms himself and his two siblings, and with all of their shedding lately he is a hairball machine. I should look into getting him a hairball remedy

I was back in Dune today, this time the parfum, from a great garage sale.

When I think of Turtles, I think of a long ago protest march where we chanted, “Up with turtles, down with greed!” 🐢💗(Hope that passes the comment policy, ’cause who doesn’t like turtles and who likes greed?)

Someone on Fragrantica said that the parfum has “aged into a creamy soft delight” which fits my experience of it.

I actually prefer the lighter EdT with its aldehydes and lily.

I never got any floral notes at all from Dune. Personal chemistry counts a lot with that one. I get a bunch of woody notes.

Margaret Wise Brown wrote my favorite book, The Color Kittens. I hope everyone has read it. I was going to say, my favorite book as a child; but I am not sure that qualification is true 😸. Reaching for CP points in Amouage Lilac Love. I happily see box turtles around my neighborhood several times a year, and I think they would like turtle-ing about under a lilac bush.

Dang, posting and running again but I wore Blue Marble by St. Clair for the cp today. It’s a perfume inspired by all the different elements that make up the earth. It has a really prominent dirt/soil note up top that especially makes me think of where a turtle would live. Then airy aldehydes and mineral aspects.
