Thursday scent of the day 10/10

Posted by Robin on 10 October 2024 117 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Mental Health Day! Birthdays: Lilly Daché, R. K. Narayan, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Thelonious Monk, Harold Pinter, John Prine. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Maria Candida Gentile Lady Day.

Reminder: 10/11 will be FOMO Friday...wear the perfume you bought because everyone else was buying it and you didn't want to miss all the fun. Suggested by SarahN.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Bonus video: John Prine and Kurt Vile sing one of my favorite John Prine songs, How Lucky, at the Grand Ole Opry, New Years 2020.

    Hello.
Sotd is Aerin Rose Cocoa. I took too long debating whether I should buy it when it came out a few years back, then it was sold out. Major regret. So after seeing it coming back this year so I immediately bought a bottle. It’s a light rose water with a very light dusting of cocoa powder and faint generic sweetness. Quite Jo Malone-styled. I think it needs to be layered with something with more body.

It does sound as if it would be a nice layer to something. A deeper rose, perhaps? Hope you enjoy it, and let us know if you hit on a good combo.

My SOTD is Ambre Russe —a bit more than I intended to apply as I forgot the decant I was spraying from (almost empty and already replaced with a full bottle) had an over-forceful nozzle. I think I’d better try to tamp it down a bit before the grocery store trip I need to make! Thanks for the John Prine video; the day he died I remember listening to one after another of his songs and weeping every time. That stupid virus took so many artists from us who still had so much to contribute.

It’s Au Delà Narcisse for me this morning. I bought it blind based on several people’s comments here at NST, and a bit in fear that it might be discontinued sometime soon. I could not love it more — it’s the most successful blind FOMO buy I’ve ever made.

Twinning with Priscilla above in Ummagumma. As soon as I saw the news about this one I absolutely knew it would be mine. As a HUGE Pink Floyd fan, it was a no brainer no matter what it smelled like. But, one fateful day I met up with Foxbins and we traveled to The Fumerie where I sampled and immediately fell in 100% love. (If you’re reading Foxbins, I hope you’re having a blast in Japan!) I could list an entire page of positive adjectives about this one but I’ll spare you.

I’m a bit west of Flagstaff out in the woods. Still feeling like summer here with highs predicted in the mid 70’s, but will probably go a few degrees higher. Just finishing coffee and will head out for a walkabout with the doggo. So happy to see the back of Milton. 🌀👀

    L’Eau for me today.
My mom has a doctor appointment this afternoon that’s supposed to be a routine checkup and flu shot, but her caretaker called me to tell me mom took all of her meds at once this morning, both day and night. So she’s doubled up on some 🤦‍♀️ Waiting for the doc to call me back.

Thank you springpansy. The office did not get back to me so I dragged her to her appointment – she’s mainly just sleepy – and after I got home, I saw that the doctor’s nurse did try to call me, while we were at the office 🙄 At any rate, mom is ok now.

Le Labo 55 Myrrhe! I like this very much, not quite enough for a bottle at this point, but we’ll see how I feel when this sample is gone….my auntie and her friend ride out the storm far from the worst of it, but they did leave her car behind. No word on the state of their condo complex, which sits almost exactly 100 miles south of Sarasota. Time will tell. So much destruction.

Oh, I hope they won’t find their condo in bad shape.
I bought Myrrhe 55 this year (about 2 weeks ago) and have been wearing it constantly. I love it, and when I wear it although it doesn’t seem to have much sillage, I occasionally catches wafts of myself and think it smells grand!
So far I am commando after a very grueling morning getting two fillings done at the dentist. I am still very numbed up and even though I”m hungry I am not in the mood to eat with my lips swollen up to my nose (or so it feels like). After that and getting two vaccines yesterday (Covid + flu) I am feeling a mix of pride in myself and self-pity. 🙁

Everything you mention sounds eminently sensible! I’ll keep those ideas in mind for the next time (I still have two more to get done). I managed to while away a few hours on my laptop and then decided to go to my neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant for chicken pho. It’s got lots of nice soft vermicelli and the chicken is pretty thoroughly cooked too and the flavors are so great, I was very happy.

Six degrees here (42F) in our eternal winter, but at least the sky is clear and we have had a few auroras this week and tomorrow there will be a comet swinging by, last seen 80 000 years ago. So, how lucky! Love the song. I heard of John Prine through Robin and NST , so thank you.
Big day of editing ahead but next week I begin my three month residency ( again, lucky) so looking forward to that. Wearing Fils de Joie as it was mentioned earlier this week. My bottle is almost empty and I’m wondering about replacing.

I’m in L’artisan Caligna, just the body wash because tomorrow was supposed to be a quality audit day. I got out of the shower to a text from coworker saying auditor is here-a day early. There was a problem with their scheduling and he’s a day early. I nearly fainted. I was 40 min away. What can you do but hit the road and do your best. Got through it, and when I went to the mail there was a huge envelope opf Byredo and guerlain samples from my SA-there’s a Byredo event coming up, and so he sent so many cosmetic and fragrance samples.

So glad this day is nearly over-thanks for listening 🙂

Trish McEvoy n9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk. This will be the first full bottle I have finished from top to bottom in forever, or maybe ever. I have too many perfumes and rarely use above 3 or 4 sprays…except this perfume fades quickly and I go through maybe 12 to 15 a day! Which is kind of satisfying. I work from home so I can spritz away.

And I already have a backup just waiting for me to cruise through the last 5 ml.

I put her away for the summer, so now I feel like it is officially fall. I have a blanket on my lap and n9 in the air. Now to apply myself ot the pile of work I’ve built up for these last couple days of the week. Smart of me ;/

Thanks for the JP video. He was a true balladeer. I was just thinking about Steve Goodman this week and found out about the JP/SG/Jimmy Buffet connection. Bob Dylan was a fan too. Ha,ha I blush to admit that my collection is mostly designed by FOMO. Commando right now but will join in with Angle Muse later. Muse is a positive FOMO purchase because so many NSTers enjoy it and it was still around cheaply when I got it.

In more other news, my brother-in-law’s back surgery was postponed yet again. There’s no new date and my sister said it will be after my cousin’s son’s wedding in early November. His diabetes number is still too high EVENTHOUGH he has a device that keeps track of it. I always see him giving himself the jab before every meal (every meal). I try not to say anything bad (really 🤣) but while he eats in moderation, he has not met a cake that doesn’t like him back. Also, quite frankly, he needs to be more selective in what he eats.

Yep. In my experience, diabetics who go cold turkey sugar withdrawal do better, but I know people who crave sugar like heroin, and they resist the idea that they should just stop. I know one person who clearly has the worst case of insulin resistance- he has the impulse to eat candy constantly while doing any exercise “to keep his energy up” he says. It is like his body can’t switch from burning sugar in the bloodstream to stored fat at all.

I’m joining Gaynor in the Patou Heritage scheme, mine is Adieu Sagesse which has mellowed into something lovely. Think classical perfume.
I’ve actually bought most of my Patou’s at a discount or at bargain prices. Stumbled on a small bottle of Yoy extrait on eBay some 15 years ago, got 1000 there for a song as well. Paid full price for Vacances (my favourite of the Heritage Patous) and then this spring I discovered that a Dutch etailer was selling HP at a good discount, so I bought Que sais-je?, Adieu Sagesse and Deux Amours.
Rather an impulsive buy (although I had smelled these three from samples), but the house no longer exists as such and I was feeling sorry for myself for some reason, so there you go.

Godspeed to Ethel Kennedy. What a life.

The good news is my sister never lost power or cellular service.
Trees down but she is fine. Along with Miso the cat.
My nephew, wife, daughters and in-laws, horses, dogs and one hedgehog all good in Tampa. Never lost power. Just a mess to clean up.
Family near Crystal River good – no power but they have their generator.
I feel so lucky and blessed.

Got Covid and the over 65 flu shot yesterday – one per arm and whoa,
my ams won’t work today. Got up, checked on everyone, went back to bed. A shower, a real coke and two tylenol and now I can function.

Fragrance free today just to be on the safe side as I woke up with an awful headache. Gone now.

Hey, how are you? Smelling marvelous, for one thing. 👍🏻
Just when I had decided to buy that one over another frag I was dithering over, they closed up shop. Darn! Well, it’s not as if I can’t live without it, lol!

Great community project this week. I look forward to people’s choices.

Unrelated, I’m in ALOF’s Made in Heaven, which I tested and loved and then never ever felt like wearing–for like over a year! But recently I have been craving it and wearing it almost daily. The nose is fickle, or at least mine is.

    Question–seeking advice:

My mom likes to buy me perfume for my birthday and she has been very generous in the past with bottles I have requested. My birthday is in a couple of weeks and she is waiting for me to give her a list. This year, things have been so wonky at work and other things that I just haven’t really tried very many perfumes new to me, or amassed a wish list. I have a small packet of samples on my desk that I have collected over the past 10ish mohths, but none of them are really bottle-worthy to me. I feel like I will disappoint her if I say I don’t have any perfumes I want just now, and a trip together to a perfume counter would not work for us for all sorts of reasons, so I am not sure what I should do. I was thinking of blind buying one or two things (asking her for them), or maybe just one, with other options in the perfumed lotion and soap variety–but I am not sure of what to ask for. So, any suggestions? Slam dunks or at least lower risk perfume products you love?

Also, I am very curious about Hiram Green’s Tryst. Anyone tried it? I could ask her for that one–but it would be a blind buy for me.

Re Tryst. It is carnation, but also has the ragged herbal edges of some all-natural type perfumes, if you know what I mean? I like it but had just bought a bottle of DSH’s Oeilettes Rouge, and I don’t need both. I hope it is still in production when I am done with OR.

Ooooh. I thought it was a neroli-centered frag! I like many carnation perfumes, but definitely would want to try before the buy on a “natural type” carnation. Thank you!!!!

Oh, if that is the carnation one yes, sorry. I got a sample of Tryst at the same time but it did nothing for me.

Hi OF, I have a bottle of Tryst and would be happy to send a sample. We’re both on the West Coast so it would get to you in the next couple of days.

It’s a sharp orange blossom to my nose with green and honeyed facets. Some say that the dry down is indolic but not enough for me. I like it but prefer L’Artisan Histoire d’Orangers for a lighter orange blossom and am also still looking for a more indolic orange blossom.

Maybe? I’m not a back-up, or use and miss kind of perfume consumer. I’ll think on it though!

How about Chanel’s No 5 body oil? Saw it’s $125 on their site, far more reasonably priced than the Les Exclusif oils (didn’t even know those existed till today).

ooooh excellent idea! I didn’t know about the exclusive body oils. I had the No. 5 a few years ago and it was fabulous.

Does one of your favorite scents come in either lotion, soap, or showergel? How about that as an option?

Oh, hooray for my CP! Although I don’t remember what perfume I had in mind when I suggested it LOL

I bought a vintage Aliage (and spent way too much on it) when the recent Estee Lauder re-releases came out. I was so sure that I would love it, and I just… don’t.

EL fan that I am, I’d say Aliage and I have never clicked. It grew on me after several wearings so maybe you’ll find something in it?

Aliage is one of the classic Estee Lauder scents that I haven’t tried yet. I figure I did all right with Cinnabar and Azuree.

I dabbed some Le Labo Another 13 on my wrists and it’s nice, although a bit too linear for my taste. After reading the comments, I am interested in trying Myrrhe 55, and the new Osmanthus 19 sounds promising. Hope they get available worldwide soon 🙂

I am always up for an osmanthus, if that is what it turns out to be. Given their naming rules it is hard to say!

Let’s see. I’m wearing Safran Troublant today – but this is one I *did* miss out on and I won’t pay the outrageous prices now. Thanks to the generosity of a perfume friend, I have a nice decant (perfume lovers are the best). I’m going on a trip tomorrow with an early and long flight to see our son who lives across the country, so I’m thinking about a couple of my FOMO buys today.
    – Theorema was a FOMO buy after everyone on MUA and NST talked it up. I bought it a bit later, split it here and have been very happy I bought it when I did. I think it was one of the last bottles that BeautyEncounter had. I’ll be wearing it during our cool and rainy winter.
    – Lost Cherry was a FOMO buy (but only a travel spray). I’m not sorry I bought it, but don’t wear it that often. I’m putting out in front on the perfume tray so that I will remember!

Took a friend to a doctor’s appointment today and thought I had gone commando. I realized I hadn’t when I caught a whiff of PMC Santal du Pacifique on my wrist. For something so seemingly lightweight, it certainly has staying power! What a nice surprise; it’s usually the other way around.

I went to the Doctors today for a physical. I updated my pneumonia vaccine.
I didn’t wear any perfume until I stopped at Lush this afternoon. I’m now wearing Chelsea Morning. It’s toffee, vanilla but still smells like a perfume. I’m digging it👍

Yes. They only had 2 or 3 of the new ones. This was the only one I tried on skin. I think the physical went ok but I am always nervous until I get test results back.

SOTD = Au Dela Narcisse, from The Sample Stash. Every time I wear it, I am amazed at how good it is.

If you like old school green floral perfumes, it’s definitely worth trying. I get a nice big dollop of narcissus in it.
