Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late September 2024

Posted by Robin on 28 September 2024 182 Comments

The swapmeet is open for business through Tuesday! Then Donatella will be dropping by on Thursday.

Meanwhile, we're marking the last days of September with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're most excited about trying soon, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Today for fun I’m in Tom Ford Lost Cherry.

Went to the mall, peeked into Lush, and to my great surprise they had the Sticky Dates body spray. Dodged the insistent salespeople, gave it a try along with Yog Nog (never smelled it before because they never have it), liked them equally and couldn’t decide between them, bought them both — probably the last thing on Earth I needed but the price was right and when am
I going to get the chance again? (Actually, the last thing I needed was lip balm but I got a couple of those too, Key Lime Pie and Rose Lollipop in their little metal tins, because they smell delicious and instantly melt into oil on your lips, which feels so good.)

Curious if they had any of the new push-up solids?

I didn’t see them, but I wasn’t really looking. Beeline for the body sprays, quick look at the fragrances ($240 is a lot for Lush, it just is), grabbed a couple of lip balms, paid for them, out the door.

Post shower am testing Day Three La Tacita de Cafe.

Yesterday was scary waiting to hear from my sister and everyone else in Florida.

She and I were able to talk yesterday and she was asked to go work at hospital. One of the no fail generators failed and she spent 12 hours moving elderly patients to a different building.

    What a woman.

No damage to her home. Kids in Tampa all good and family in Brooksville good. Trees down and power loss.

So many others not so lucky.

One year ago today we were in Nairobi visiting the ellys at Sheldrake Foundation. That was way more fun.

Glad to hear your fam is all safe, but probably very exhausted. I contacted a good friend of mine in Asheville, NC yesterday. No power, no landline, extensive flooding, trees down across her driveway and yard. Thankfully, everyone was okay. Never thought I’d use North Carolina and Hurricane in the same sentence…🌀

My grandkids are about four hours from Asheville and they do talk about getting storms from the hurricane and seem to lose power quite a bit.

Oh, sure, many bad storms/hurricanes in the central and eastern half of the state, but Asheville is in the extreme western mountainous area that is not typical hurricane territory historically. My first travel contract was in Jacksonville NC (better know for Camp Le Jeune) right on the coast. Had a few wicked storms when I was there. Hope your family made it through safe and sound.

Before we had cell phones, my then husband and I lived in San Francisco when the 86 earthquake happened and the bay bridge fell down.
We couldn’t call anyone to let them know we were okay. I can remember my mothers’ terror after we were finally able to connect several days later.

It’s the start of our daylight saving time, so I’ll be here earlier than usual for a little while until the US changes back the other way.
I sniffed the new release from Hermes, Barenia. It seems to be just a light citrus to my nose, but I need to give it a more indepth sniff.
I also sniffed some of the Maison Crivelli range. The best I could say at this point is that they seemed pleasant but inoffensive, which is very faint praise, but again I need to give them a proper try.

Since you mentioned your new bottle purchase, I decide to try Myrrhe 55 while I was at the mall today. Very nice! Quite a complex fragrance, I think my favorite part was when I could really catch a whiff of what smelled like licorice. Hope you’re enjoying it!

Oh, I’m glad you agree with me. I also do notice the licorice aspects at times. It is so floral at first, and I love that stage too. It doesn’t seem to have much sillage but it’s got staying power, so I can enjoy smelling it on myself!

My daughter and dog and I went to the pet store today. They were having an adoption event with the same people I adopted my dog from. For the first time since his adoption he saw his foster lady and he was so scared! She was trying to say hi and pet him and he just stuck himself between my legs and shook like a leaf! I wonder if he thought we were going to return him? He was friendly with some of the customers there so idk.
I’m wearing TF Fleur de Chine today. It’s such a beauty.

Maybe the foster family had more than one animal at a time, maybe several dogs and cats? My ‘Number 2’ dog is much calmer since her older brother died earlier this year. She was never bullied by the older dog but the older dog was a bit hyper and super vigilant ( border collie mix) which exacerbated the younger dog’s nervous temperament. Now she is a lone dog she is much more relaxed and happy. Could be the same with yours? Just needs to be an only dog, and maybe ( without knowing details) the foster home was too noisy and active, which scared her? The foster woman might have been kind to her but the household vibe was wrong.

Opened my camper door at dusk last night and was startled by a buck right behind my camper. We both jumped about 10 ft! Hope he’s still enjoying his deer life because it’s hunting season and I heard a couple of shots this morning. Relaxing with a glass of wine with ice after a good bout of housework. Dust bunnies banished for a few days, floors scrubbed. I need to do some outdoor work but it is 90+ degrees and I am going to try that in the morning, tomorrow.

Trying a sample of D’Orsay LB. All I get is orange blossom suntan lotion and I swear I had a little glass bottle of Mexican cologne I got at Walmart that smelled almost the same. So not making the full bottle cut.

I have a promising rose candidate from my samples: Rose Ardoise from Atalier Materi. This is described as floral, woody amber and I think if Glossier You and a rose perfume had a baby, this would be it. I was getting a similar effect from layering Henry Rose Sheep’s Clothing and Solinotes Rose. Still auditioning candidates for rose perfume purchase 2025. Delina remains in the running.

My rose sampler fragrance sampler pack had Acrasia from BeauFort London which was almost exactly L’Air Du Desert Marocain to my nose. I love the website.

Can I complain about something that in the scheme of things isn’t that bad? Oh, and I’m wearing Trayee from a generous NSTer. Why did I get a FB of Pichola instead of Trayee???

I was trying to get my stamps dot comm account to print labels for the swapmeet and it refused. I tried turning off my computer, refreshing the account, everything. I read their Help guide which suggested that I delete my Cache and Cookies. I did.

When I tried to get back into my Gmail account, using my email and password, I was told that I was being sent a recovery code. Long story short, I apparently didn’t have a back up email or phone number (which seems impossible) and therefore, I cannot access my account on my computer. Thank heaven I can still access my email account on my iPhone! Everything I’ve read online says there’s nothing to be done if I didn’t have “recovery options in place” and of course there’s no customer service access to Google.

If any of you have experienced this before, I’d love to hear your experience. I know I’m not alone in this because there are a lot of disgruntled people online.

Again, very small potatoes in the scheme of things but setting up a new email for my business is a BPITB!

I mean, has anybody ever heard of a company with that much client information totally unwilling to engage with their customers to help retrieve an account of this importance!?! And I know my password!

And if that is the case, then we shouldn’t be able to sign up for an account in the first place without providing all of the information they need to retrieve the account up front.

Go to the My Google Account page.
        Click on “Personal info.”
Add your phone number and recovery email under the “Contact info” section.
Save the changes to ensure they are applied to your account.

Maybe if you did that over your phone ( which still works) you could set up the recovery , and then access your computer as you still have your password??

Since I can still access my account via my iPhone, I’ve been trying to find a way to do it there. I will definitely try your suggestion to see if it’s different than what I’ve tried already.

And I haven’t found a way to call Google for support with this but maybe I could try another customer service number for them and throw myself at that person’s mercy!

HAPPY UPDATE: The kind SA at T-Mobile diagnosed the problem. Google hadn’t been able to update on my old phone and somehow the authenticator messages were trying to alert that phone, not my new phone. Crazy! It was epic but I’m SO relieved!!!

Yeah these tech headaches are so frustrating. Years ago I got locked out of my email account and the security questions they sent me were useless because I had set up the account before they required them. It was maddening to get questions like “ your father’s middle name” wrong when I knew the answer. I do make sure I have backup as much as possible.

A few months ago my elderly mother’s email was hacked. It took my brother most of a day to get it fixed up.

That makes me feel better. I’d hate for anyone else to go through this. As far as I understood it, Google states that if you don’t have a back up email or phone number, your account “will be lost” – no customer service, no recourse. And I had a password and both of those! I just had the bad luck of getting a new iPhone this summer and an old version of the Google app on my old phone such that I wasn’t receiving the “Authenticator” messages. When your account is lost they instruct you to set up a new account. Cold comfort.

The protest March for the hospital was attended by more than 25% of the city population which was a great turnout (35000 protesters) . There was a strong sense of unity and purpose, and most people were enraged by the politicians who have backtracked . It’s a medical school, teaching hospital and it’s pretty rundown. Four-bed or six-bed rooms, sometimes mixed, tired operating theatres, no PET scan etc. Pretty hopeless really…and the foundations for the new build are already in the ground. Anyway, glad I went and I found it quite cathartic to chant along with the others, and make noise.. Took my camera for fun. Quieter today. Rewatched Decision to Leave ( great movie, fourth watch) and tested Gaynor’s samples which I like. Armani Prive Magenta Tanzanite . Tempted if it was half price!

I’m glad the protest march was a success in terms of turnout, at least. Do you think it will have any effect?

Although I’m a huge fan of Park Chan-wook in general, that is one of his films that left me kind of cold (though you can’t help but feel something at that ending!). I recently found a YouTube commentator who had some really excellent remarks on it, and helped me appreciate it more. I can try to track it down again if you’d like, as I am sure I subscribed to his channel. (By the way, I am writing something now on his Vengeance Trilogy. Lady Vengeance is my favorite.)

    Happy weekend!
I just got home this evening. My mum and uncle are holding up strong and well so I feel okay leaving them.
I finally got my Shalimar Jasmin from the post office. I sprayed it on the minute I got home. I couldn’t wait any longer!
Might be late on the train but here’s my take:
Shalimar is unmistakably her but taken on a sheerer approach. She my be less extravagant and opulent but no less beautiful.
The jasmine is not as sweet as I anticipated. It has a touch of greenness and a strong note of rice steam, much alike the jasmine one can find in Southeast Asia.
The bergamot opening is also dialed down, giving this iteration a softer, more gentle personality.
I like this but I will not be getting a bub. I still prefer richer Millesimes of past years, especially Tonka and Iris. (The best vanillic Shalimar is still Ode a la Vanille Madagascar)

I have a question, and it’s a true question not a snark. But I should admit I am not someone who is generally taken by Shalimar. Why do they issue so many of these versions of it? I mean, is it something about the scent itself–that it’s so complex it lends itself to having various facets explored? Or is it more about its fans, that the fans will be pretty endlessly fascinated by variations on it? I am trying to think of some other classic that has similar “development” possibilities. Mitsouko, for example, just doesn’t seem like it would lend itself to many versions. Or L’heure Bleue. Thoughts?

I reckon Chanel 5 could have potential for similar limited edition/ marketing/ scent iterations: a boosted iris version, or a jasmine version, or citrus version, or vanilla. Like Shalimar, Chanel 5 has a lot of notes to pick and choose from. And I bet they could make money from producing Chanel 5 Vanille, or some such.

This completely makes sense to me. They are both extremely popular scents and they both have many notes.

Also, maybe it is a way to try to entice others that do not particularly care for the original scent to try something a little different by amping up one of the notes. I used to dislike Shalimar and then loved Shalimar MI and now have three iterations of Shalimar.

I’m sure there is some marketing scheme in there somewhere.

I suspect it is not about development opportunities so much as sales. I think Shalimar outsold Mitsouko by miles, so it makes sense for Guerlain to keep finding ways to reach more (and younger) people with it.

Chanel sells tons of Chanel No. 5 but despite the fact that there are women who adore it, I suspect LOTS of those bottles are sold as gifts and given to women who rarely wear it. Makes more sense for Chanel to concentrate more resources on other fragrances that are worn by a younger audience…Chance, Coco Mad, etc.

Just my guesses! I know nothing!

It looks like the sun will be shining today ( sunrise has been ‘ pushed back’ an hour due to daylight saving but it is getting light outside). I have a novel to edit but will go for a walk first and see what’s happening in the graveyard, rabbit and flower-wise. Lots of freesias in my garden now. Wearing A La Nuit. Funny thing yesterday. I sprayed the CSp Vanille Banane and both my son and his girlfriend liked it, and commented on it BUT they both thought it was a licorice scent. I think that it wasn’t so much that the perfume smelled like licorice but that they didn’t think of banana as a possibility. As soon as I identified banana as the note they went ‘ yeah, banana!’. They’re both chemistry students but my secret hope that they’ll be perfumers is diminishing.

I was a bit under the weather Friday evening, nothing respiratory, just a mild fever and aches that went away after 24 hours. It got me wondering, I’d love to hear what scents you like to wear for comfort or to bed? I used to be apprehensive of putting anything on too close to bedtime, but found that something powdery/clean/soft, not too stimulating works. I’ve had success with Bvlgari Au Thé Bleu and (surprisingly) Mitsouko. Any suggestions?

I sometimes wear scented body oils e.g. MFK Oud Satin Mood or BR540, TF Soleil Blanc, NUXE…
But what I wear the most is Chanel No.5. Because I shower at night, the soapy aldehyde of No.5 prolongs the cleanliness comfort (and of course, it smells so good!).

Scented body oils are such a great idea for post-shower/bedtime! I recently tried the newish Coromandel one and it would be perfect for this. I would buy it in a heartbeat if not for the price!

And Chanel no. 5 also sound perfect, cleanliness is key for bedtime.

Thank you for posting this, Robin. I scrolled down to the end of the comments in case you had. I’m a huge fan & very glad I saw him on his farewell/retirement tour a few years ago, as well as many other times in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh & Dublin. Also saw him with The Highwaymen – I travelled to London’s Wembley Arena to see them, rang my husband after the gig & he told me they had scheduled a gig in Aberdeen (where we live) three days later & his then employer was co-sponsoring the event – so having paid for flights, hotel & concert ticket I then saw them for free! The BBC broadcast the Aberdeen concert – something to do with a series of programmes marking the departure of a section of US military personnel leaving Scotland – & I have it on videotape, I really must get it converted to dvd. I was younger & thinner then (!) & had bought a red leather bum-freezer style jacket in an upmarket shop on the Brompton Road during the time I was in London which I wore to the gig – & there’s a moment when you see this red jacketed figure leap up & clap her hands above her head – that was me when Kris announced “we’re going to do a Guy Clark song now” – I’m a big Guy Clark (also sadly no longer with us) fan – at which point my husband, who of course was sitting beside me, cringes & pretends not to know me due to my exuberance! RIP Kris indeed, bless him.

Anyway, it brought back memories of watching these shows planted in front of the big console TV in our living room because I was blind as a bat and didn’t know I would soon be wearing coke bottle bottom glasses. Got a big lump of nostalgia in my throat and my eyes got a bit leaky. 🙃

Loved him in Heavens Gate, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Classics!

I spent the whole weekend doing a whole lot of nothing. Full disclosure- I didn’t even get out of my Jammies. Serious case of jalapeño’s 🐲 butt!

Texted briefly with my Asheville friend to conserve her battery as they are still without power and water. The photos coming out of there are just horrific, and still so many people missing. Really heartbreaking. She used to live in Biltmore Village several years ago and boy, was moving out of there a good choice in retrospect, considering the total devastation there.

SOTD is Au Coeur du Desert because it’s a bit complicated but just stunningly gorgeous. A bit like life.

I am happy to see that I am not the only one who didn’t do much this weekend 😆 (except a little bit of vacuuming, because two cats…)
Today’s SOTD is Hermès Vetiver Tonka.
Wishing you all a good week!

Yesterday, like NinaV, I did some vacuuming because I have 2 dogs. I did that in vintage L’heure Bleue. I think it was the wrong me for L’heure Bleue yesterday and this morning. I am debating on either Lyric or Infusion d’Iris today.

    Happy Monday!

My deepest sympathy for those recovering from Helene. The cleanup when the water recedes is going to be massive.

I am wearing Stash perfume and lotion today, it’s just right for a gray day in early fall. Starting to get lonesome for sunshine.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! October already and yesterday I noticed that a Christmas decoration section had been set up in our department store, for those who want to buy plastic trees and baubles. I tried Barenia but it was such a parsimonious sample spray from the SA that I couldn’t really form an opinion. Seemed nice but faint. Wearing Cristalle today, I think .

Here’s hoping that Helene’s aftereffects have ceased, and the recovery efforts will go smoothly. That was one huge storm. We were distinctly in its outer bands even in Southern Indiana. It was very strange with the wind from the North, and the light but steady-for-two-days’ rain. It is not the first time we’ve gotten Southern weather in a noticeable way over the 35 years since we moved here from Georgia! KellyC mentioned Sensuous Nude, and that is my comforting SotD. I finally tackled two banker’s boxes of my parents’ saved papers and photos that have been sitting under a table and in a corner since they passed away in 2019. Mr. Mossy and I also are doing a “reset” of many of our own old papers around the house. I know many of you will understand. Perserverance is the key. And happily, most of it was not too tough to let go. I started feeling that my parents would have said “toss” as I dug through. Bonus find was a certain photograph that I’d remembered and wanted. Happy and sad…

I have a box like that from my parents who have also passed away. It is a hard job to get to –I always put it off. You are inspiring me!

After this week’s cp was announced last Friday, I made my list of perfumes I have with a cinnamon note. And wow, some of my favorite perfumes are on that list so I started wearing them on Saturday. Today I’m in Organza Indecence. Over the weekend I wore Musc Ravaguer, the original dry oil version from back in the day called Huile a Tout Faire, and Papillon Bengale Rouge. It’s been a good smelling weekend and will continue to be a delicious smelling week.

Seeing lots of pics and video of Helene’s aftermath. SMH. That’s going to be a long and hard road to cleanup and recovery.

It’s about 15 degrees cooler here today than yesterday. Definitely a touch of Autumn in the breeze. I am also seeing quite a few honey locust trees turning bright yellow here. But those are some of the earliest ones to change. Almost everything else is still green.

SOTD = back in Alien Fusion today.

RIP Dikembe Mutumbo. He was one of the few NBA players that I took an interest in. Wonderful personality, fun to watch on the court, and he ended up doing humanitarian work after his basketball career was over.
