Thursday scent of the day 9/12

Posted by Robin on 12 September 2024 112 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It’s also National Chocolate Milkshake Day and the National Day of Encouragement. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am never going to be able to figure out my oldest bottle bought new. I do remember all my very early purchases, but those bottles have all been drained and replaced at least once. So today: a fragrance I know I bought early on and never drained: Guerlain Vetiver.

Reminder: on 9/13, wear the fragrance from the oldest bottle in your collection that you bought new (in other words, not counting any vintage fragrance purchases, etc). Suggested by Gail.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is JM Nectarine Blossom & Honey.
Last night I was thinking about my chocolate perfume that had gone missing. If I knew where it was it’d be perfect for today. I am talking about Musc Maori (anybody remember this perfume?), the most delicious hot chocolate scent.
Robin, I have a question about the CP: If my “new” replacement is from 2018 is it still “new” and points-worthy?

I remember it. I did not like it as much as you did, but it had a strong chocolate note for sure.

Gosh, sorry I am here so late. I guess it’s really a question for Gail, but I understood it to mean the earliest purchased fragrance in your collection…so if you started buying in 2003 and replaced that first bottle later, it’s now gone, so the second bottle you bought in 2003 is now the oldest, unless you replaced that too…

so unless you did not buy any fragrances prior to 2018 that you still have, that can’t be your oldest bottle bought new? Does that make sense?

Thank you Robin. I think I understand. It means CP is the oldest bottle of perfume (which I still currently have) that I recently have bought a new one/bub of…? 😵‍💫

No…the actual oldest bottle. You can’t count vintage that you recently purchased if you have an older bottle (bought new) in your collection. So whenever you started buying, it’s the first one you bought then, IF you still have it. If you since got rid of that bottle, it’s the next one you bought. (If you drained it so it’s gone, it doesn’t count in other words.)

All moot since I was working all day and now it’s 4:41 ET.

Comme des Garcons Series 1 Leaves: Lily. A pretty green lily-of-the-valley perfume with an interesting blend of sweetness and sharpness.

On Friday, my UPS battery started acting strangely—it drained too quickly and then recharged too fast. Twice. I sent the UPS for warranty repair. Hopefully, it turns out to be a warranty case… Winter is going to be tough, and I need a reliable power supply.

But there’s some good news. REKA, the game I tested and proofread a few months ago, was released in early access today, and my name is in the credits. hajusuuri, this is the witch game you asked about.

I was also offered another game for proofreading. I’ll receive the text later this month, but they’ve already given me access to the game itself. It looks interesting, but the issue is that it’s a very creepy survival horror, and I don’t handle that genre well. I managed to partially desensitize myself by watching a Let’s Play of the game, but I’m still nervous about playing it. I’m such a wimp when it comes to creepiness and jump scares! Well, I’ll just play during the day with the volume down.

Thank you! Actually, I was in a bad mood for the first couple of days because of this new problem and only later calmed down and recovered my patience.

Sigh. It does not help that we get multiple air raid alerts daily, and staying in the corridor until things get quiet again became almost a nightly routine.

        But perfumes help a little!

Woohoo on getting credit for your translation work.

Didn’t you just purchase the UPS? Here in the U.S., warranties could range anywhere from 30-60-90 but more commonly at least a year. I hope you get it sorted out.

Technically, I was credited as a localizatrion tester, while the translators were uncredited for some reason (different agency handled the translation stage). Thank you.

The warranty is 24 months, so time is not the issue. The issue is there are exceptions not covered by the warranty, and current operation conditions we have in Ukraine are not exactly normal.

I’m in one of my earliest FB purchases in the Rabbit Hole Era, SL Cuir Mauresque. Still saving my very oldest bottle for tomorrow, and hoping I can find it — it has a leaky sprayer and the leakage burned a bottle-bottom-shaped ring into the finish on my dresser top so it had to be banished to a ziplock somewhere.

I still remember my first sniff of CM. It wasn’t a positive experience! By the time I realized what a fabulous scent it really was, it had been reformulated (to my nose anyway) and was a shadow of its former self. I have a bottle, and when I wear it, I love it, but also feel deep seated regret I didn’t buy a bottle before reformulation. Ambivalence, defined! I have the tall black tippy bottle…you smell fabulous and I’m straight up jealous of your gloriously aged bottle. 🙃

Oh wow. My bottle is undoubtedly the refo’d version since I didn’t discover it until about 2013 and it was (to my surprise) originally released in 1996. I guess I’m happy that I love it without knowing what it used to be.

Another beautifully cool morning here with lots of sunshine! My goal for today (before I head into work) is to deep clean and discharge to the dumpster some accumulated junk. I bought a magnificently compact bead/craft storage unit so last night I got that all organized.

I didn’t see the new Shalimar flanker on the US website this morning. Because it’s jasmine and not rose I’m much more tempted, although I need another perfume like I need a hole in the head.

Because it’s chocolate milkshake day I was going to go with Amour de Cacao but my hand decided to keep the coffee buzz alive and grabbed Café Vanille or Vanille Café (I can never remember…🙃)

    Happy almost friYAY!

For the CP, EL Tuberose Gardenia from 2012, which got a compliment from Mr. Mossy!! I bought it at TJX, $50 for 30ml with an adorable mini. That was very expensive for me at the time, but I loved a 15ml bottle of current Jungle Gardenia I’d bought (used every drop so no points there) and hoped for something similar.

Was finally able to change the bandage today and used the last of the Vaseline for wound care. The dermatologist said no the the triple antibiotic cream and to use Vaseline only with a bandage. So off to the store to get more. My parents are home and they had a blast at the concert. They said John Mellencamp was excellent, Bob Dylan was bad but Willie Nelson was awesome. SOTD is Diptyque’s Kyoto, the gorgeous red bottle always makes me think of hajusuuri. I’m very tired from attending my son’s back-to-school night last night and not sleeping well. My introverted self was drained from meeting new teachers and re-connecting with many parents.

Twins with Kris in Mitsouko tonight, a bought new 2000 bottle of EDT, later I acquired a vintage Eau de parfum I favor greatly but this edt is peachy and lovely in its own right, I have just a quarter left of a 50ml. This morning I chose 100 Bon Mimosa et héliotrope poudré still faintly there, like my two other 100 Bon bottles it’s very enjoyable and really terrific value.

I am wearing one of my oldest bottles, which is Odalisque by Nicolai Parfumeur. I am not really sure when I got it but I do remember visiting their little tiny boutique in London, almost a kiosk size place really. It was somewhere not too far from Harrods. And it was in the earliest days of my growing more intense about my love of perfume. I suspect it was around 2001 (I had several trips to London in the early 2000s). I also bought their Eau Turquoise then and wound up really disliking it, though I do still have the bottle. For some reason I just don’t remember wearing this one much and the bottle is still pretty full (the Odalisque). It’s very chypre-like and has that bright citrus opening I love. With tangerine! I don’t think I knew back then how many perfumes seduced me with that wonderful smell of tangerine. That’s a case where I enjoy the smell a lot more than the actual fruit–they smell more tart than they taste.

Yesterday I visited Mom and we had a nice celebration of her birthday. I took cupcakes and everyone sang her “Happy Birthday.” She was clearly in a cheery mood with all the fuss over her, and balloons.

I’m wearing Cabochard for my Friday, I figure it’s one spray from being my oldest perfume. I bought a bottle around 1995, and thunked it only a few months ago. This will be the my use of the BUB that I bought a couple of years ago.

I am testing my Oakcha samples and wondering why the *&@% did I ever fall for this crap.

(Oh yeah, because I got suckered by the hype and thought I wouldn’t have trouble with the aromachemicals, since I generally don’t react badly to things like Iso E Super. Spoiler alert: two out of the three samples I’ve tried have given me massive headaches and racing heartrate. S*cks.)

My oldest purchased-new fragrance is not accessible to me at the moment. I’m in Richmond, and my Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Ete is at the farm, so I can’t wear it tomorrow. I’ll have to have a think…

      Nice to see you mals!

I have not even heard of Oakcha — the hype these days goes right over my head — but sorry, that’s awful.

I’m off today and haven’t done much. I went grocery shopping earlier. To cheer myself up after that, I went perfume sniffing at Macy’s. They are starting to put out the Christmas gift sets. I love gift sets! They are so pretty.
I’m testing out the new Dolce and Gabbana Devotion Intense. I don’t smell too much hazelnut and the lemon is barely there. I much prefer the original.

    SOTD = Tauer Sundowner

It is a downer of a name but smells so wonderful! 🤎🤎🤎

I saw my sister over the weekend and she mentioned that she thinks my nephew had been deployed again. Oy! Also, I did my “practice” of getting into their house without setting off the alarm. I just have to decide what reading materials to bring.

I am waiting patiently for my NJTransit refund for however much they are willing to give me. I mailed mine in the first day we were allowed to do so and on Monday (16th) it will be a little over 6 weeks. If I do not get it by sometime next week, I will call to follow up because, hey, $$$ is $$$!

I got an email about the new Tauer. A sample set sounds awfully tempting! And I can justify that expense, sorta kinda.

This is harder than I thought it would be –pretty sure my bottle of 1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire is one of my earliest that I bought new. So that’s today’s fragrance. I know that Chergui was also one of my earliest, ordered from Bergdorf Goodman way back when I joined MUA in 2004, but then I sold it and then finally recently bought another from a perfumista here. Who knew being a perfumista would be so complicated (and fun), LOL: buy, sell, re-buy, back-up bottles, swaps, splits, partial bottles, samples, decants, ebay, etc etc.

    Happy Almost-Friday NST!

Well, my suspicions were confirmed by the vet this afternoon: Teflon kitty has an ear infection. When the vet was examining Tef, she shook her head violently enough that some gunk flew out of one ear and landed on the vet’s arm. Kinda gross.

So Teflon will be on ear drops twice a day for a week. Then she goes back to the vet on Day 8 for a follow up.

SOTD = back in Fzotic Feu Secret. My spray sample is disappearing quickly…

I’m in what I believe is the second oldest new bottle I still own, Tocca Stella. This was purchased as NIB along with the shower gel on eBay in December 2007. My bottle has about 15ml left now. I still love this one. It’s blood orange, bitter orange, and musk with a bit of floralcy on me. It’s in the same vein as Mandarine Basilic and Jo Malone Basil & Neroli.

It’s good you have an older bottle. I recently sampled a current version and to me it has less orange and more musk.
