Thursday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2024 154 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and Free Slurpee from 7-Eleven day, plus World Population Day (that would be a little over 8 billion). Birthdays: James Abbott McNeill Whistler, EB White, Jhumpa Lahiri. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Mandarin Basilic.

Reminder: on 7/12, we're doing Cologne part 2: wear a modern citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) new wave summer colognes.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I think Mardarin Basilic sounds wonderful!

I’m in eau d’Hadrien, both the EDP and EDT, and I love this scent. Works for so many occasions. Slight break in the heat today and supposed to rain later.

Our shop dog is in residence today! His name is Alfie, and he’s a French bulldog. He runs up the ramp to get in the door, and wriggles with excitement. Then he finds his raw hide bone, and starts his shift. He’s great!

The weather’s not nearly so hot, which is nice, though the ragged end of Hurricane Beryl is bringing us rain rain rain, not so nice, but i’m in Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon, delicious amaretto, very nice indeed.

    Hello.
Sotd is Opium Over Red. Another anti-cologne but it sure is delicious.
I recently got a bottle of Vacation’s SPF Baby Oil. I am sure it does work protecting my skin but there is just something dubious about rubbing on a transparent liquid instead of the traditional milky white.

I keep *almost* caving on a Vacation sunscreen…eventually I will get one! Maybe the orange gelee, although the baby oil sounds fun too.

Hello all! The heatwave continues, and the worst days will be apparently July 12 – 15. We had running water nearly all morning and then in the afternoon till 3 pm. No power for the last four hours, and apparently there is some sort of failure they are fixing. So no water and power at the moment, but we stocked up with water and the battery and UPS help with power.

I am wearing Acqua di Parma Mirto di Panarea and a wet towel. As much as I like Mirto di Panarea, I am enjoying the towel more. 🤣

We are heatwave twins! Roughly the same duration for mine, too.

If you have reusable ice packs, another way to cool down is to freeze some and wrap a few in a pillowcase. Then use them to reduce temps in your bed. Kind of the opposite of a hot water bottle.

IDK about you, but I can’t sleep worth a darn when it’s too hot at night.

We seem to have the same sleep problems
It is 4 am now – I woke up because it is so hot. Sprayed myself with water and turned on the fan. We do have reusable icepacks. We take them out of the freezer and put them in different parts of the fridge during blackouts, to protect food. Interesting idea, thanks.

Off to walk the dog nice and early – we’ve got another scorcher in store for us today, so the pup needs lots of exercise before the sidewalks get too hot.

I’ll be trying to stay cool by wearing Guerlain Homme EdP.

So, in the wake of Hurricane Beryl, I’ve been without electricity for a few days, and so have not posted. Neither have I been wearing any fragrance, just weltering in my sweat. The problem with being a Texan with no electricity is that few of us are used to Texas summer without air conditioning. Anyway I’m wearing 4711 AC Green Tea & Bergamot, because it was handy.

I’m in Eau d’Hadrien edt, partly inspired by carole above and partly because it was what I intended to wear yesterday before the hand went elsewhere. Have to say, it’s amazing how much happier I am with mid-80 degree highs than when it gets almost to 100. Fifteen little degrees and the whole world changes. Humans have a relatively small range of suitable conditions, don’t they. 🤔

From a sample: Heure Exquise by Goutal
I almost went with Ninfeo Mio-but will save that for tomorrow.

Went to the Chanel counter yesterday to find out what is going on with the vitalumiere aqua foundation that has been discontinued. They have no idea -and so they fit me to another shade (mine is all sold out) that they had in stock. I really love this one for travel. oh well. This new bottle will last me for a long time.

I extend fragrant hugs and heartfelt well wishes to everyone enduring power outages or facing uncontrollable world events, whether due to weather or other circumstances. Stay strong.

Will be wearing CdG Kyoto today after I empty out all the household garbage since garbage day is tomorrow. Yesterday was supposed to be just checking on my grandmother’s house but had to throw out a bunch of stuff from her bedroom. It was really gross. You have no idea how bad some of it was and my dad and I were doing dry heaves the whole time.

I’m still wafting Angel’s Share from bedtime last night. Worked perfect in my ice cold igloo all cozied up under the covers! I keep the A/C on the lowest temperature setting and the fan on the highest. It sounds like a nonstop jet engine inside. The noise it produces is probably more damaging to my hearing than any rock concert I’ve ever been to, but who cares, it’s COOL! Not sure what I’ll wear for the day just yet…something light for sure.

Feeling for all the folks without power and water, especially if you’re in a high heat area. Hope everything comes back online ASAP!

LOL, hearing aids aren’t so bad. Most models fit so that no one can see them, unless you actually point them out to someone. The only downside is they’re $$$$$, and the insurance honchos are dragging their feet to get more people covered. But they do help. I’ve been wearing mine for almost fifteen years now (I’m Gen X, for context).

SOTD is Eau Sauvage, which I have always felt is badly misnamed — what’s so sauvage about strolling through a lemon grove with a sprig of basil in your hand? But it’s such great stuff, especially in this heat.

Fruit-salad-of-the-day is bing cherries, Santa Rosa plums, and blueberries, all grown within a few miles of here and all as luscious as they possibly could be. The next few days are going to involve some baking, freezing, jamming, and syrup-making to cope with all the bounty. Plus fruit salads with every meal!

Yesterday my dog ate a cherry plum, which can be lethal. He has never jumped on the counter before but he probably thought it was a ball. I took him to the emergency vet so they could induce vomiting. ( $200.00!) The vet said he barely even chewed it. He’s fine now.

It’s a hybrid of a cherry and a plum. I bought some the other day because it sounded like it could be good. I didn’t even try one before my dog did. Then I was so distressed over it I just threw them away. ( overreacting, I know)

Glad your pup is ok – and I too panicked once and threw away a fishing pole and line cat toy when our kitten got tangled. Later I realized I could have cut off the cute catnip fish. I am curious whether it is the seed that is dangerous, or the fruit (which sounds delicious) itself?

My sympathy and compassion to all those suffering the weather extremes, especially in Texas. Without power there’s not even fans, it must be incredibly miserable.
My news is that my mom is in the hospital with a blockage in her esophagus that’s preventing her from swallowing. We spent yesterday in the ER and she will be here for a few days. I feel so bad for her, she can only have nourishment through her IV, nothing to eat or drink, and she’s so confused. Her 97th birthday is next week. I’m wearing a dab of Stash since it’s one of her favorites.

SOTD=Gallavant Bukhara, my summer Iris. 🙂
Escapist book on tape at the moment, “The Keeper of Happy Endings”, a little magic, romance in occupied Paris and modern day New York, kidnapped Doctors without Borders physician, trust fund artists, like I said, total escapism, read in the Audible version by somebody with a charming French accent for the historical parts! Tension and grief moderated by interludes of espresso and lovingly described pastries. Lesson of the book- All you can do, is keep doing the best you can, in the circumstances with which you find yourself! Perfect!
The rain has stopped here and the total heat wave has not arrived yet, good day to go to the grocery store and enjoy the sunshine.

A moderately more summery day here, I’ll take it. No smoothie as dessert will be fresh blueberries. Carrying on with the EA Green Tea project, in the honeysuckle flanker and tonight Berdoues Vanira Moore, a green vanilla I really like even though it isn’t very highly rated on Fragrantica but I don’t care very much about that.

      What’s your favorite flanker?
I really should stop reading the fragrantica reviews. Sometimes I skim them just to look for certain words if I am thinking about blind buying. ( ambroxan, masculine,Cologne, lavender)

This honeysuckle is very pleasant but I think my favorite is Lotus, green, very zen-like, I have the Exotic too , all purchased pre-perfume obsession. I like all three but then I stopped trying the new ones as I didn’t want to buy more, I also have a little 30ml of the original.

I do check Fragrantica too still for warnings, like you said ambroxan, cumin too is a big no for me but am not much swayed by ratings

Same. I use it track my collection, things I want to try, and to take notes, but I don’t trust the reviews. I do think the “reminds me of” can be helpful if there are enough responses.

In other news, I like to simplify festive meal accounting by just splitting the bill based on the number of people. I felt very confident about doing this unless some people decide to order way more than they normally eat or drink, which, BTW, had happened before. To this end, I’ve half-way successfully had separate checks. In any case, the Wall Street Journal recently published an article with Venmoing someone for $4 (no missing zeros) for the time it took to drive a friend to the hospital. $4. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Note: There may be a pay wall.

I’m breaking my journey as I knew I’d be tired. Wearing Melbourne Muse ( Glasshouse) vanilla, coffee, orange blossom. Basic , and a bit like Black Opium but slightly more floral. Keep warm!

Another CP that reminded me of unfamiliar scents in my collection: Clementine California today. I am enjoying my sample after liberally splashing it on. It would not be FBW for me, that is unless something changes on my evening walk to our favorite Mexican restaurant. It’s 81 and a bit humid. Cologne, do your thing and refresh me! 🙂

I thunked a sample of Lush Super Unknown from the generous AnniePerfumes. Far from a cologne, but I’ll take a quarter point for the strong lime note.

    Drinking F&M Queen Anne tea.

I finished season 1 of My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime last night. If you took the Tudor storylines of Becoming Elizabeth, the irreverent voiceover narration of Bridgerton, the anachronism of The Buccaneers, and added a fantasy element à la ACOTAR, you get My Lady Jane. It’s fun.

No. The Let the Good Times Roll shower gel is calling out to me, but I got the Trader Joe’s shower gel dupe for the Brazilian Bum Bum cream scent and it is similar enough to the Lush that I can’t justify having both.

98 degrees for the high temp here today. Tomorrow and Saturday are expected to be even hotter. Glad I got my “outdoors” tasks taken care of before noon! 🥵🥵🥵

Humans aren’t the only ones trying to cope with the temps. I caught sight of a tiny bat in the corner of my hallway, hiding out from the blazing sun’s light and heat. 🦇

Had occasion to use my mini screwdriver set this afternoon to repair a towel rack due to my klutziness. Some swearing on my part, but the fix itself was easy-peasy.
