Thursday scent of the day 6/6

Posted by Robin on 6 June 2024 164 Comments

It’s Almost-Friday and the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Birthdays: Diego Velázquez, Alexander Pushkin, Thomas Mann, Marian Wright Edelman. What fragrance are you wearing?

For dancing to Little Red Corvette back in the 80s, I'm in Yves Saint Laurent Paris.

Reminder: 6/7 is Prince Rogers Nelson aka Prince aka The Artist's birthday. Scent a Prince song, or do whatever else you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Assam of India this morning. Not my reason for wearing it, but I think Prince would have loved the little elephants on the bottle.

Continuing my sampling of Roja Dove:

    Mischief is my SOTD

The inspiration from the perfumer: “I wanted to create a scent that reminded me of the flowers of spring: the flowers of my childhood, when nothing was too serious and everything was like a game that had no end.”

Smelling like an expensive spring flower

I’m wearing Chanel Egoiste today, it’s actually cooler and sunny and Egoiste smells just perfect. I’m claiming partial CP points because no one can get to be so famous and influential as Prince and not have a pretty strong ego.

Cooling myself with Guerlain AA Herba Fresca,

Yesterday blackout lasted 26 hours for most people in my town. Then power went back on at midnight and was off again at 2 a. m., this time till morning. Today the power was on for half of the building (I was among the lucky ones) and off for the other half. They finally turned it on for everyone about and hour ago, although the voltage in the building is still low.

I started a new game localization testing project today but ran into some technical difficulties. Finally, with the client’s help, the issue was solved. But my laptop barely handles these gaming tasks, and I have another testing assignment next week, and that game’s requirements are a bit higher than the current one’s. So now I need to quickly choose and buy a new laptop and then get some kind of charging/backup power solution for both the laptop and the external monitor. Oof.

I hope everyone’s week is less stressful than mine so far.

Sotd is EL Beautiful Magnolia L’eau from another sample. I am sorry but got nothing nice to say about it. Very generic watery floral mall scent with barely any personality. I am glad the staying power is also l’eau (low).

Great! I have taken some special workshops for caregivers of people with dementia. It is as so helpful. I’m sure your talks are much appreciated. I am finding that done of the younger nurses here where she’s in the hospital could use more training about how to deal with dementia patients. When it comes time to write a review I will suggest that.

Definitely tell them. I am a former gerontological nurse consultant so worked with this a lot in my 40 years of nursing. It is a very difficult disease to watch, and I have had to see my grandmother and mother suffer with the disease. This is one of the reasons I like to educate people as families have no idea what to expect.

All I can smell right now is the gobs of sunscreen on my face and neck, but earlier I was gently wafting Shalimar body crème from last night. Will probably go with Ninfeo Mio in a bit. Currently enjoying rocking in the shade and watching T-Rex try to levitate the prairie dogs out of their holes with her intense focus and concentration…I’m wishing I had half her energy. Also watching the HUGE boats go by and OMG! I can’t imagine the purchase and operational costs of these beasts! 💸💸💸

Yes, high desert but there is a river and a HUGE lake/reservoir. The big draw for most campers is the world class fishing here. So, many come with RV’s towing boats trailers. Also, a lot of local folks are getting their boats out of storage and into the water for the season. I’m right around the Flaming Gorge area.

I’m in no 5 L’eau. The humidity lifted over night and this morning there was not a cloud in the sky. Absolutely beautiful.🌞 I’m a little annoyed with Chanel that the LE is simply a different bottle. To me a “reinvention” or new “creation” as was their wording, means new juice not just a new bottle. Hmpf.
Oh well, I guess that’s marketing.

Terrible insomnia last night. My brain could not stop thinking about all that I have to get done in the next 48 hours. Have you ever seen one of those plate spinners? Well that’s me right about now.🤪

I’m back at the hospital. Thank you so much everyone for your concern about my mom. It’s very comforting and kind. She’s very sleepy today, probably due to all the stress yesterday. No more seizures and so far no terrible test results, but they’re planning an EEG for later today. I’m wearing one of my new Arquiste samples that I like a lot, with a good orange blossom. I can’t remember the name!

I sampled the new Abel Laundry Day yesterday and liked it. It is a washing hanging on the line scent (and so there is no white musk element, not a clothes dryer in sight). It has quite a noticeable fresh lime opening and then gets grassier and spicier ( closer to Pause, if you know that one). Stayed on my skin for a couple of hours as a pleasant grassy spice skin scent. I think the notes also have passion fruit and vetiver. I would put it in a pleasant/ safe/ wearable load, eco-cycle .

It’s expensive for what it is (NZ$270 for 50ml). It’s not a complex perfume but it is nice. It is also safe in a mindful/wellness way, like, good for a weekend retreat. Lacks a bit of personality. If it was cheaper it would make a good ‘ filler’ for in-between days, when you just reach for something.

For handwashing dishes, have used regular Dawn for years. Now it’s marked “new clean scent,” and I hate it–smells like a powerful Axe spray. Just purchased Dawn Platinum in wild jasmine, which I hope will be an improvement…we shall see.

I’m wearing a sample of Goldfield &Banks Sunset Hour and it is supposed to be inspired by a sunset over the Indian Ocean, but all I can think of is the smell reminds me of the Nestea my grandmother would make me when I would come over to visit. I am probably not going to be buying any more samples this year after this. There is so much hype around certain perfumes (not on on this website to be clear, but other places) and when I try them I’m surprised I’m smelling they are same perfumes that others gush about. It’s all subjective, I know.

Interestingly, every time I go to Scent Bar in Los Angeles, the sales assistants always push the Goldfield & Banks line, telling me how much the staff (and others) adore them. To my nose, they’re just okay. Pleasant, but forgettable.

You’re right – it’s all subjective. But it’s fair to say there’s a lot of (unwarranted) hype out there!

I see fragrance youtube gets free bottles of G&B. Often from Twisted Lily , they hype the brand quite a bit.

Sunset Hour was nada, zip, zero.
I do love Ingenious Ginger for summer, it was a top fragrance for me last year. Even bought a BUB.
And of course the beautiful Silky Woods.
Todays’ SOTD was Cardinal by Heely and all of you who told me to try were enablers of the worst…oops I meant best sort. 🙂
      What a gorgeous incense.

Smoothie was a fresh mango instead.
I went to see the hygienist in the West End but ended up not doing any shopping because it was coldish for this time of year and rather grey. Glad to have clean teeth at least. Typical British weather these last few weeks, very uncertain. I was in a few discreet sprays of Hiris for my appointment but tonight I sprayed Prada l’Eau Ambrée with abandon because I haven’t worn it in a while and it’s so good, lovely, juicy citrus, very natural and the drydown is just as good with its opoponax and patchouli.

Every so often I see Prada l’Eau Ambree pop up on the discounters’ websites. Don’t really see it in brick & mortar stores anymore.

Also thinking of the young men who made it back from D-Day, and built much of the world we now live in. Greatest Generation, indeed.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

On our way to Isafjordur, Iceland!

Today, we were in Akureyri, Iceland. We took an excursion to the Botanic Garden, Nonni Museum and Santa’s House. It was quite cool and damp but thankfully no snow, sleet or rain. I don’t think we’ll be so lucky tomorrow! I will have more photos to share at some point in the future.

With this said, here are two pictures. One is of a clearer picture of snow-capped mountains and the second one is of … an OWL!

Didn’t really get any grapefruit with Leather Jardin. Sometimes I amp perfume notes and other times I zap them.

But I am hoping the Vetiver Pamplemousse would be similar to the Jo Loves Pink Vetiver. That was a very nice citrus with woody notes on me.

Finally clapped my nose on Calvin Klein Reveal, a 2014 release that I’d not even heard of until Robin mentioned it during the CP where we did salt and pepper notes. It fits for Prince week as well, since the band Salt & Peppa were huge fans of Prince and even name-checked him in songs and he did covers of their songs in concert. So that’s my tortured logic.
Many 21st century designer perfumes have musk and woods aromachemicals that grate horribly on my sinuses, but Reveal is light, intriguing, and lovely. I can also understand why it was d/c, as it isn’t a fruity or overly sweet or aquatic or musky or powerhouse scent. It’s subtle. I don’t think I need a bottle, (just as well cuz it’s d/c) but I’m really glad to have discovered it, so thanks, Robin.

I am wearing 4711 Jasmine today.

A friend of mine, who works behind the scenes for concert venues, told me a story a few years ago. He said that when Prince came to our town to perform in concert he needed some items for his dressing room. My friend had to walk across the street to Saks to get one of the fragrance items Prince requested to get ready for his performance. I, of course was very curious what product he needed. So I asked him. It was Jo Malone Red Roses body and hand wash. I always thought that was so cool to know what scent was going on while Prince was performing that night !

I think it got up to 91 here? Not sure.

Got another day of 90+ degree temps, then the heat wave breaks. Unfortunately, the cooler temps come with a big serving of unsettled weather for several days. I haven’t missed the hail storms one bit.

I appreciate the same cooldown at night!

I went with Raspberry Beret for the song today paired with Guerlain My Insolence for the raspberry note. I haven’t worn this in forever, and it smells great and very much like the year it was released, 2007. Fruity floral notes over almond, musky, powdery base. I still have a few ml left in my decant so I’ll continue to pull it out from time to time to enjoy it.
