Wednesday scent of the day 2/14

Posted by Robin on 14 February 2024 120 Comments

Happy Valentine’s Day! It's Wednesday, and there are 34 days of winter left to go. Birthdays: Frederick Douglass (maybe), Jack Benny, Florence Henderson, Gregory Hines, Terry Gross. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking points in Marni Rose.

Reminder: 2/16 is National Almond Day! You know what to do.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today’s Alkemia perfume oil is called Soma. It features absinthe, opium, cannabis, and a couple of other interesting scents. I thought that it was very green when I put it on, but it’s developing into something else.

Hi NST! I’m gathering CP points for Jo Malone Myrhh & Tonka, which Fragrantica says has almond in the base although I don’t smell it.
My knee surgery is agreed upon, said to be the best way to fix the problem, and I had all my questions answered on Monday but now I’m waiting for the scheduler to call me. I wish they would hurry, having made up my mind I want to get this show on the road!

If asked, I’d probably say that almond is not a note I seek out (and while I love the actual nut, I am not fond of most extracts/flavors, and only like marzipan if it’s not too sweet and is surrounded by chocolate). My perusal of the Fragrantica database suggests that “not seeking out” perhaps should be edited to dislike — I apparently have zero perfumes with an “almond” note (but haven’t gone through “almond flower”/ etc.), and the ones listed that I’ve tried were all a big “no.”

Still commando. Maybe Dzonghka again later on.

LL Sweet. ‘Nuff said. Hope you East coasters are digging out from the snow. I did not look at the news yet today, so maybe your skies have cleared. We are on day 3 of cloudless, 30’s mornings that move to partly cloudy 50’s afternoons. I am sure Winter is just biding his time before giving us a nice blast.

Happy Valentine’s Day, fragrant friends! I’m in Rahat Loukoum — forgot about the CP so I’m inadvertently on theme, but this felt like the most Valentiney of my fragrances. Biscuit and I partied hearty last night with our friends and we’re both a little bleary this morning, and the weather is bleary too, and I’m off to a most-of-the-day team retreat thingy at work, which, sigh. But I smell like a heavenly box of confections!

According to the internet: Blonde chocolate is white chocolate that has been cooked at a low temperature for a fairly long time to caramelize the sugars and milk solids in it.

The garden is shrouded in mist and the only sound is a rooster, somewhere and it’s a grey pre-dawn start after yesterday’s burning sunshine which left me seeking shade. Valentines Day, yesterday, led to a heated debate over the “ best” version of My Funny Valentine: Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Costello and then I threw a spanner in the works with a memory of Rickie Lee Jones singing a great version . I don’t use Spotify because I hate the way arguments like that one wind up, with 15 second snatches of every version, until you go insane . Wearing Tresor this morning .

Well IMHO it’s Chet Baker by a mile, but Rickie Lee’s version was wonderful (and I had it on colored vinyl that also had a fantastic version of Just Walk Away Renee, gosh, had almost forgotten that) and I do like the Elvis. Love Frank but that was not his best, did not think it was a good song for Ella Fitzgerald either.

In other news, let’s talk about Tooth Fairies per the WSJ. The most outrageous gift for a first baby tooth loss listed was £60 + silver fairy necklace + Louis Vuitton bracelet (bought not eh day the child was born). Seriously, what is a child supposed to do with this largesse? I was lucky if I got a nickel! In a more “realistic” note, inflation also hit the average price of a tooth – from $5.36 in 2022 to $6.23 in 2023 – quite modest compared to some of the more outrageous gifts. In any case, for other ideas, which I haven’t perused and never will, you can search Pinterest for “first tooth parties”, “potty-training rewards” etc.

It’s almost like they’re trying to normalize luxury. Personally, I’m into normalizing cheapness, no surprise to anyone here. And I always thought the reward for potty training was not having to spend time in a wet or poopy diaper?! 🤔

So true with the not wearing a wet or poopy diaper! My brother and SIL tried to reward my nephew with being able to wear big boy underpants when he hit 10 days of no accidents. Well, the poor guy got to 9 days then relapsed 😂

I believe the going rate in our house 5-10 years ago was $2 CAD, £1, or €2, depending on where we were. She did have a special tooth-shaped pillow with a pocket in the back for the tooth / money, but then I knitted that myself after seeing a picture of something similar. She definitely didn’t lose interest — she wanted that money, right down to the last tooth! I still have the note she wrote to the tooth fairy from the time we were travelling and we lost the tooth itself.

Potty training was a breeze and didn’t require any incentive, mostly because she decided she wanted to be like the big kids at daycare and took care of it. 🙂

I like it but it’s not a love. My travel size will do me just fine. I don’t get cinnamon. I’m crap at describing fragrances but it’s a very fresh, clean vanilla as opposed to a deep, dark, unctuous vanilla. Vanilla is and always has been my first love, and almost every perfume I adore has vanilla in it somewhere. It may not be the star but it’s a very talented supporting player. This one is very mild mannered and work appropriate, which is why I chose it for today. Polite, inoffensive, and lacking any real personality but very serviceable. I have a few vanillas coming from CocoaPink, and I’m looking for ward to it!

Oh, totally! There are many that get rave reviews and then I try them and it’s no bueno. I like what I like and I’m fine with that. I may never “get” some of the old dames, and I’m fine with that, too. Different strokes for different folks.

And I wanted to add that I have found a couple people here on NST who have some similar tastes to me, so I follow what they say pretty closely. I’m much more apt to try something if they have given a positive review here. That has introduced me to some wonderful fragrances I probably would not have tried otherwise.

And speaking of both orange and hearts, I’ve recently joined OrangeTheory Fitness for the cardio/weights combinations. I’m still figuring it all out, but it was a good (and tough) workout this morning.

I’m enjoying Encens Mythique today. Will focus on almond tomorrow and Friday.

Speaking of inflation, what is up with shoe repair places nowadays? My wonderful repair guy retired and closed down. The three other places I contacted wanted $55 to replace the rubber heel pads on a pair of boots, which is ridiculous. My old guy charged $25. I did find a guy in a really bad part of town who quoted me $28 over the phone but when I actually showed up he only charged $19. The work was good and done very quickly, but I can only go there in broad daylight accompanied by my husband.

I am probably going to put my 1 oz bottle up for swap. I just don’t have a love for it like I thought I would.

Apple and yogurt smoothie. Eating mash potato.

Réminiscence Dragée today, it’s good and CP compliant but not as delicious as tonight’s choice for the CP, Réminiscence Tonka.

It’s a citrussy almond, quite bright, quite marzipanish.

Sending candied hearts to all of you today. 💖

I’m wearing Tonka Imperiale for the CP. It’s also a little Valentine’s for this scent since I heard it’s going to be discontinued.

Yes, it is indeed discontinued. Luckily I stocked up last year when the rumors started circulating.

Not on CP or on Valentine’s Day as I tried a sample of PMdP Cedar Woodpecker that came with my Christmas gift from Luckyscent. (I think they went with the “masculine” scents because Mr. Ockeghem placed the order.) I’ll do something else soon, though. Basically this was a huge cedar blast when I put it on, and then it was almost completely gone a minute later. Meh.

I’m wearing Frapin 1270 and smelling strongly of pineapple. I can’t seem to get going today, maybe it will be one of those that goes by without anything accomplished. I will be more ambitious tomorrow.

Mmm, you smell great. I love that Frapin 1270. It goes fruity raisins on me, smells almost like a wayward Serge scent.

Watching a BIG crane lift roofing supplies onto one of the buildings in the apartment complex earlier today. My building will be due for that next week.

Productive afternoon for me. I donated some things to a thrift store, and took the long way home to get better acquainted with the geography. Happy to get that stuff gone!

The song I usually link to here on Valentine’s Day.

SOTD = Estee Lauder Legacy White Linen, from their sample set. It’s quite pretty and much less austere than what I remember the parent perfume to be like. I get a lot of rose in the top notes of it.

I had such a crush on Peter Wolf. I just looked and he is 77!
Curious if the new White Linen smells of aroma chemicals at all?

I am not the person to ask if something smells of aroma chemicals. But I am now curious about the original White Linen and will have to give it a sniff.

Lorenzo Villoresi Donna for me today, it’s roses so fits the Valentine’s Day theme. It might be a little too straightforward rose for me, we shall see, I just put it on. Supposed to have a sandalwood drydown.
