Friday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2023 156 Comments

It's Friday, plus National Sandwich Day and World Jellyfish Day. Birthdays: Walker Evans, Anna Wintour. We're off to Japan for Culture Day...our community project: wear a perfume that is named for a place in Japan, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Japan, or that features a Japanese ingredient, or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki.

Reminder: 11/10 is Neil Gaiman's birthday. If you read (or watched) Good Omens, maybe scent Aziraphale or Crowley? Or scent some other favorite Gaiman work, or just wear a fragrance that you think fits any fantasy, science fiction or graphic novel or movie/show of your choice (it doesn't have to be by Gaiman).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is old vs new [cropped] by Rick Finster at flickr; some rights reserved. [I failed to keep good notes, but I think this shows Himeji castle.]

I forgot the CP-it’s Coromandel EDT again, because there is something about frost and crisp air that makes me want to wear this.

I did get out to bike last night and when I came out of the yoga class my bike seat had a tick layer of frost. It looked really pretty but was it ever chilly. Then you get home and get warmed up and I had some soup and it felt so good. Best of all worlds-bit of adventure, bit of cold, followed by some warmth and the traces of Coromandel in the air.

Hope everyone has a good weekend, maybe with some small adventure.

The only thing I own that’s Japan-adjacent is SL Feminité du Bois, which I bought at the Narita duty-free on the way out of Tokyo in 2012, so that’s what I’m wearing today. Can’t smell it very well: the COVID is lingering, though I’m almost out from under it, and my sense of smell is a shadow of what it was. But it does seem to be improving: I still stubbornly wear a different scent every day, and at the beginning of the week I almost no sense of what I had on but today I can more or less identify FdB for the cedar monolith it is. More of a cedar matchstick right now, but it’s definitely cedar, and that’s a relief.

You smell fabulous. And how lucky that Narita Airport still had Shiseido FdB as late as 2012. I have scoured Little Tokyo and Japanese shops in L.A. looking for it, but pfft it’s long-gone, they say. You smell marvelous!

Sorrry COVID got your nose! I read somewhere, sorry no reference but it seemed fairly reputable at the time, that stimulating your sense of smell by digging a set of well known scents a couple times a day helps. Line up 6 or 8 very different but simple smells and tell yourself what you are sniffing – this is vanilla! This is black pepper! This is almond extract! This is a freshly cut clove of garlic. This is peppermint oil. This is my good doggy. Etc etc. Shouldn’t take long just definite sniff of definite things with which you already are familiar. Hope it all comes back soon. COVID is a nasty bug. Wear masks in public! Stay current on vaccines! Rah rah rah – end of PSA/ personal opinion.

When I had COVID and lost my sense of smell, I would get out my Fendi Fendi EDT (my most 80s powerhouse) and my vintage Coco and try to smell them every morning. When I could finally smell them, I knew I was getting better!

I feel fortunate to be fully vaccinated and boostered — in fact, we got our latest boosters the day after we got back, last Wednesday, when I guess the virus was already percolating in my system preparing to wreak havoc. I hope to get back to normal soon, but if I never do get my sense of smell back the way it used to be, I won’t be happy, but I’ve made peace with it. If you can’t fix it, you have to stand it, as Annie Proulx said.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is my favourite Shiseido, Saso. It suffered the same tragic fate of many beautiful creations and had been discontinued. Nowadays I only apply it very sparingly on special days (CP is one!). Somehow in my mind if it turns before I ever finish it, it will seem like I had an abundance and I’d feel better than if I drained the bottle? I feel conflicted.
Any who, I smell gorgeous today and that’s all the matters, right? 😉

*Scribbles furiously.* I’ve never even heard of that one. Someday as I walk through an outdoor antique flea market, I will find a box full of d/c Shiseido perfume bottles that some retired sales rep for the brand is getting rid of. That is the dream, at least.

SOTD is one of my HG perfumes, Shiseido White Rose. It really is the most perfect rose scent I have ever encountered. Not too sour, not too sweet, and with the rose front and center. There are other notes, I am sure, but they serve only to enhance the rose, not cover it up. It is not the longest lasting perfume–I get a good two hours and then, poof! it is gone–but while it lasts it is lovely. I am contemplating the “need” for a BUB, as I really do not want to ever be without this one.

Do you know, is that an expensive or reasonably priced perfume if you’re buying it in Japan? Or is it discontinued? (Sorry if you’ve already said and I’ve forgotten.)

My understanding is that when it was first released it was VERY expensive, but it seems the price has not increased as fast as inflation. I don’t know what it sells for in Japan these days, as I have never been there and probably never will be, but there are a number of sellers on ebay et al selling it for around $250 for a 32mL bottle, which I do not find unreasonable for an extrait. My main reason for hesitating has to do with concerns around international shipping and commerce (customs issues, difficulty in tracking international shipments, etc.) If I could walk into a store here in the US and buy it for that price, I would have done so long ago. I take it that it is still in production, but I don’t know for sure. Information about Shiseido perfumes is frustratingly hard to come by–what is in production, what is discontinued, what is being sold where, etc. There is an article on Fragrantica, an interview with perfumer Tomoo Inaba (the nose behind Moth and Nightingale for Zoologist) that has some good info.

Great article. Very informative. I think most of us in the West will never see these rarities, which seem to have been produced often in very small quantities. . I wonder if Tomoo Inaba is related to Yosie Inaba, a Japanese designer who also had a perfume in the 80s/90s I think.

Robin, you smell wonderful!!! I have only ever tried a sample of CdG Hinoki Laurel Monocle but it was instant love and one day a bottle will be mine. Bonus: my sister loves it too so maybe we’ll split it.
I totally forgot about the CP today and instead grabbed a verry partial vial of D.S. & Durga Pistachio that I just received in a swap. Do pistachios grow in Japan? Are they popular? At any rate, I love pistachio gelato and this is the pistachio fragrance I’ve been waiting for, nutty and only mildly sweet due to the cardamom and slight dark vanilla pod note. The other one I’ve tried, Kayali Pistachio Gelato went way too sweet on my skin. So the D.S. Durga has now migrated from my “Test” list to my “Wishlist.” Their perfumes are hit or miss with me. I’m still kicking myself for selling their LE Siberian Snow, with all its deep resins and spice, but this is a new fave.

I realize I *do* have a perfect Japanese perfume I can wear this evening post-shower. It’s Annayake Miyako, which is tucked away in a box at the back of my closet and that I haven’t worn in forever. So thank you CP for reminding me of this beauty. The box is its own lovely presentation with sliding panels. It’s a gorgeous spicy woodsy incense fragrance with a touch of vanilla. I wore the heck out of this bottle back in the day and when a friend complimented me on it, I got her a bottle too. I’ve tried several of her others, Tsukimi was more fruity/ambery and good too, though not as memorable.

It’s Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotic spf50+ pa++++. However, I have just looked at the reviews and list of ingredients and found out it is fragrance free and essential oil free. But it has a rather high concentration of rice extract (30%), so maybe this is what I smell. Apparently it smells of nothing to a lot of people. 🤔

I’ve been travelling for the past few days, and haven’t been much on CP. Yesterday I put on Apoteker Tepe Brother Night in honour of Day of the Dead at an ungodly hour of the morning on the way out of the house to the airport. Today I’m in ELdO You or Someone Like You, which is in my travel bag and sort of fits…I or someone very like me (the old historian version of me) used to live in Philadelphia, which we’re headed in to visit today.

I love Samsara. I still have a packet of shower gel, and body cream. There used to be some very special samples given freely. Even the paper it’s attached to is heavy duty and pearlized. And I was remembering back to 1995, when I saw a pyramid almost as tall as me, of Guerlain miniatures in a beautiful gold coffret. It had perfect tiny bottles of Shalimar, Samsara, and Chamde EDP. Two perfect miniature bottles of Cologne Imperial, and Eau de Guerlain. And the EDT of Jardins de Bagatelle. It cost $60 cdn.

ELDO Fils de Dieu today. Got very warm yesterday (77F) and is supposed to be even warmer this morning. 🫤

I made coffee cake muffins in my air fryer yesterday. So that, along with two cups of steaming coffee, was breakfast this morning. Have I said how much I love my air fryer? It does everything and it does it quick! Dinner last night was salmon and acorn squash. Can’t tell you the last time I had any kind of squash because it takes forever in a conventional over. Tonight is Italian sausage ravioli with a side of balsamic Brussel sprouts and maybe some roasted sweet potato chunks. Yum! 😋

    Smell well, y’all!

Totally agree with you re: too HOT! I’m pretty sure that’s air temp and not surface temp, which is even hotter. Even T-Rex is not interested in lying in the sun today. As for the air fryer, I’m a total convert! I just had pizza for lunch. So simple and fast! One tortilla, cheese, and whatever your brain can come up with as toppings and five minutes later- shaZAM! 🍕

Happy Friday all! I completely forgot about the CP, despite setting out my bottle of Shiseido FdB. *smacks forehead*.
Today’s SOTD is Halston Couture EDP. If Aromatics Elixir and Knowing had a love child, this is the closest comparison to me. My bottle is from my college days some 30-odd years ago (I’m fudging the math here…) and the spritzer is wonky. I wound up overapplying so I am wafting big time!

No points for me this entire week. I’ve been alternating between comfort scents and random samples. Yesterday was sampling Maison Crivelli Santal Volcanique — it is as gorgeous as J B said a while back, but somehow just not me. Wish I could smell it on him! Today is Indult Rêve en Cuir, which has been in and out of my LS cart several times and is the closest thing to Hermes Doblis (😍) that I’ve encountered so far. Today ReC is a love, but I can’t help feeling that owning a FB would ruin it for me. I’ll guess I’ll finish the current sample and perhaps acquire another, and continue the LS cart dance for a while longer.

Totally understand. I was talking to a friend on the phone last week and she asked when I was going to start back to work…and I almost started to cry! I told her “I don’t want to go back!” And she said “Then don’t!” And I felt very heard because she is an MD who also does not want to “go back” and had decided she’s not GOING to go back.

I remember a nurse in the VA ICU showed me his trick for getting tight rings off. It involved winding a string around the finger starting at the ring and moving dismally toward the tip. Genius. I still remember 20+ years later.

I have a minimalistic silver wedding ring that is a thin hammered silver band. Never liked having much on my fingers.

For today’s cp, I chose Mitsouko edp, a perfect choice for today’s cloudy, gloomy, chilly day. Mossy, earthy, and just a little bit peachy, I feel warm and comforted. 🤗

A bittersweet day ahead tomorrow. My ex-DH passed away a few weeks ago out of state, where he’s lived for many years with his long-time partner. I’ll be attending a memorial service for him here hosted by our son, whom I’m immensely proud of for graciously handling his dad’s complicated posthumous affairs despite being abandoned by him for many of his growing-up years. I’m trying to follow his lead and focus on the good rather than the bad times, forgive and forget and join in celebrating his life. Hope I can succeed!🤞

But I’m looking forward to Monday, which is Mr. Laila’s birthday. Depending on the weather, we hope to visit either the Arboretum or Botanic Garden followed by dinner at Bob Chinn’s Crabhouse and ending with a performance by a local jazz trio. Can’t wait!🥳

    Wishing everyone a nice weekend ahead. I can’t believe it’s November!🍂🍁

I am still wafting last night’s Velvet Rouge, it is the complete opposite of a gentle restrained perfume, so I probably get some negative points. Arte Profumi has some very nice perfumes that I’d be happy to own, but they are not cheap.

I’m in J-Scent Yawahada (Soft Skin) for the cp. I tried this one a few years ago, so decided to revisit it. Skin scents are some of my favorites, but I’ve decided I don’t really like this one. It does remind me a little of Missing Person, but that one I like and went through a travel spray off. Oh well, money saved.

My daughter and I went to see the movie Priscilla this morning. We practically had the theater to ourselves, which is exactly why I like to go Friday mornings. The actress who played her was very good. Chanel No 5 made a brief appearance in one of the scenes as she was unpacking makeup and beauty products and setting them on the counter. I wonder if she really wore No 5, or if it just seemed like a good perfume to use?

Like others, I planned to wear Kyoto today but the hoodie I wear around the house smells strongly of yesterday’s Jungle l’Elephant so I am wearing it again. Yummy.

I have never heard of Neil Gaiman before and science fiction/fantasy is not my favorite category of books or films, so I will try to think of a theme for myself for next week. The theme will probably be wearing whatever I want.

SOTD = ELdO Fils de Dieu…, from the Sample Stash. This one is definitely a fall/winter perfume for me. And today there is something about it that is reminding me of Kenzo L’Elephant. I am trying to figure out what it is that they have in common.

I struggled with this CP but in the end I chose TDC Osmanthus. The reason being that although Osmanthus is not exclusive to Japan, it does grow there and I wanted to do a JCE. His paired down style reminds me of Japan.
