It's Friday and Bastille Day. (It's also Shark Awareness Day. Birthdays: Gustav Klimt, Ingmar Bergman.) Our community project for today: See if you might possibly have anything French in your collection? Extra points for extra-French-ness, or for silly perfume Frenchification. (This is a repeat from 2017).
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm taking bonus points for extra-French-ness, in a little dab of vintage Guerlain Jicky.
Reminder: on 7/21, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". (This is a repeat from 2014).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Shalimar 👑
A generous NSTer sent me some older Shalimar bottles awhile back and the one I am wearing today the cologne
Extra points!
Totally French!Love Shalimar edc!🙌🏻🙌🏻😉🤗
I’m in Chanel No 5 body powder and vintage edt. Mmm.
No 5 is perfect choice
So is Shalimar.
Smelling good Ringthing!
So are you, house twin!
Another house twin for me!
As Paris is so important to France and being French, I’m wearing Paris YSL, my trusted sidekick for nearly forty years.
It still smells so unbelievably good and comforting!
Twins!
I almost went with Paris!
Bon jour!
Today is Paris – Deauville. plus I have the body lotion.
Lovely picture, Robin.
PSA – 20FRAGRANCE at Beautyhabit. I just snatched up a bub of G&B Ingenious Ginger.
Oh boy…😬
Must be over because it didn’t work for me. 😭
oh no!
I think the total has to be over a certain amount. It didn’t work for a travel spray, but when I added a $130 bottle the 20% came off.
Ahhh, that explains it. I was wanting the travel size. Money saved!
Ingenious Ginger is fabulous!
Wore that earlier this week. I may have to look into the lotion now that you mentioned it. I did not even know there was a lotion.
yes, all the eaux have lotion excepting Paris Edimbourg.
And a shower gel.🤩
That too? Not very often do you see the body products too.
How are the Chanel Eaux lotions?
Wafting Champs Elysees, from a thunk of a vintage mini edt. CE is one of my top five Geurlains so I have FB’s of edt, edp and extrait. I think I like the edt just a bit more than the others. Wearing Cristalle edp yesterday made me think of CE – there is a link in the peach/melon notes.
Great pick MossyBerry.
Yay for a perfume thunk! Good thing you have plenty of BUBs for that one, though.
So far I see a lot of people wearing Paris-themed perfumes.
I am joining you in YSL Paris EDT.
Hi dear twin, I hope Paris gives you as much comfort as it does me.
I really love that scent. You smell pretty. (I don’t often use “pretty” as a perfume compliment, but it really applies here.)
To me what could be more French than Chanel 31 Rue Cambon? The address of Chanel in Paris on top of it. That’s what I will be wearing today and I love it ❤️
Ah! 31RC is so sophisticated. You smell great
Thanks. You are right. It is so sophisticated.
You do smell great! I almost went with that one today.😊
Well, I know there is a lot of love for Dune here. I cannot remember ever smelling that. I must look into it.
yay for Dune!
I think Dune is so great. Would you like me to send you a sample to try?
Sure. Thanks. Do you still have my address?
I do have your address! I’ll email you tomorrow.👍
Hiya scent twin!
Today I chose Un Jardin Sur Le Toit, which is my favorite of the Jardin series. I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of a rooftop garden on the Hermes building in Paris.
You can find videos of the garden!
I visited Nordstrom’s today and smelled the new Jardin from Hermes, the one with a pistachio note, and it is surprisingly nice! It’s hard to describe. It’s definitely on the gourmand side and smells like a fancy and delicate crumbly cookie. Nordstrom has an anniversary sale offering of several, maybe five?, small sized bottles of various of the jardin scents for $99, which seemed like a good deal if someone is interested in them.
But I meant to say, I like Jardin Sur le Toit, and own a bottle of it. Very nice in summer!
I looked it up, and it’s four scents, not five. Here is a link for it: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/jardin-nomad-eau-de-toilette-travel-set/6840482?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=000.
Ack! I’m going to pretend that I didn’t check out that link!
While going through my collection for this week’s daily wears I was genuinely surprised at how many French things I own. (It doesn’t hurt that I have so many bottles of Comptoir Sud Pacifique and Serge Lutens.) Today I decided on Mugler, and I couldn’t resist A*Men Pure Coffee, which is more or less the original, only supersaturated with coffee, a great morning pick-me-up.
I always meant to get that one for Mr. Ockeghem, but was too slow to get around to it. You smell great!
Twins with Kris in 31 rue Cambon. Well, at least I had it on this morning and it’s long gone now, along with what little makeup I put on this morning before it melted off. It’s hot hot hot in Athens right now; we tried to go see the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion, only to get there and find out they’d closed it due to the heat. The Acropolis is also going to be closed midday tomorrow, but here’s hoping the tickets I had for 8 a.m. are still good. At least now the high for tomorrow is supposed to be only 40C, rather than 41 as originally forecast. (Both are just pretty darned hot). We’ll be museum hopping after that, looking for air conditioned spaces.
I will reapply the Chanel when we get around to taking Mr. Ockeghem to dinner tonight for his birthday. Until then, I’m hunkering down in our somewhat air conditioned apartment and doing some much needed laundry.
On the front page of the journal this morning they showed Athens and mentioned how tourist are in the heat wave.
Happy birthday to Mr O. Enjoy your dinner!
Sounion was closed? wow.
Find a nice taverna and have iced coffee.
You smell fantastic! 31 Rue Cambon is just such a gem – especially in the EdT version.
Actually, this morning I did think of it, too, but then decided on another Chanel Exclusive …
Happy Bday to Mr O!
Those temps sound crazy, even to me!
Stay cool!
✌🏻🌞🌹
More birthday wishes, and stay cool, both of you!
Wow! That is very hot. Well, you sure smell good. Just reapply tonight before your nice dinner.
Happy birthday to Mr. O 🎂! Stay cool and have a lovely dinner to celebrate 🥂!
Happy Birthday to Mr. Ockeghem! Hope that you both found a way to cool off today.
I was saving No 5 L’eau for today, but at the last minute decided to go with Dune. Perfect choice for today’s weather. More needed rain overnight bringing sun and blue skies this morning.🌞
The painters finished up this week and now the house is done! I mean really done, every square inch both inside and out has been competed over the last 2 years and it feels and looks good! Now off the Home Depot to shop for new light fixtures.
As someone going through what seems like endless house upgrades and/or repairs, I envy you, and congratulate you! It’s funny though that you say it’s done but then that you’re going out for new light fixtures. Seriously, this home-tending process can be endless!
Oh, yes, I just meant that all the painting has been done. I hear you, there’s always something that needs attention. We’ve lived in our house for 12 years and in the back of my mind there’s always been the thought that the living room really needs to be painted, or the entryway really looks terrible, etc, etc. For the first time ever, there is no looming painting project. I finally caved and just hired.
Yay for done! I’m still waiting to find out later today if we will have a working toilet and shower when we get home next week.
Oh gosh, I sure hope so!🤞
Great to get all that done at your home. Have fun shopping for light fixtures.
Thanks Kris!
Congrats on the painting Done and smelling great in the Dune! One of my very favorites👍.
Thanks Laila! Dune is definitely one that I should wear more often.
It is so worth paying someone to paint, rather than going the DIY route. Good luck finding the right light fixtures!
I agree! Kind of like movers. My h is an excellent painter but simply doesn’t have the time. I was really happy with the job this company did on the exterior 2 years ago so brought them back to do the interior. Money well spent.👍
I chose Chanel Eau de Cologne for the CP. It’s so classically elegant and beautiful that it makes me think of the way French women always seem to effortlessly exude elegance — think Juliette Binoche or Christine Lagarde, or (of course) Catherine Deneuve — and wish I could do the same. Ah well, maybe in my next life. 😉
Maybe it’s time for me to rip open the package 🤣. Mine would be vintage by now besides the fact that it is an EDT.
Yes! Doooooo eeeeeeet. 😆
This is the prefect weather for Eau de Cologne!
ARGH, that should be “perfect”!
I’m wearing Pierre Bourdon’s La Fin d’un Été and claiming bonus points for extra French-ness. Plus, I bought this now discontinued beauty in a cute shop in my favorite Paris neighborhood. This should cover all the bases 😉.
Plus you smell beautiful! Such a shame those fragrances no longer exist.
Plunged my hand into the sample sea and lifted out a handful. First French perfume I spied was AG Nuit Etoilee which I then proceeded to dump down the neck of my shirt. Not a favorite but good for what will be a hot, hot day.
Finishing my coffee then will pack up, hit the laundry and post office before finally making our way back to the town I’m currently working in. Slept well, woke early, then had some REM sleep with a lot of dream activity, one of which indicates to me I have finally resolved some issues that have plagued me for a long, long time. At least that’s how I’m interpreting it. Pretty literal, but I closed the door, locked it, and then walked away without looking back, so I think that means something! 😁
Happy friYAY!
Congratulations on the healthy dreaming!
i like those kinds of dreams.
It’s good to pay attention to your dreams!
Happy Friyay!
Wishing you more sweet dreams ahead; Nuit Etoilee seems like an appropriate scent to follow!
YAY for having good dreams instead of bad ones!
I chose from my samples to wear today solely based on the total amount of French words, L’Artisan Parfumeur Mûre et Musc Eau de Parfum. Maybe I’ll wear Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celestia Forte Eau de Parfum later for extra credit.
That’s a good strategy!
Major points!
Claiming points in vintage Le Galion Sortilege.
Just used the BH coupon, too! Small bottles of Nicolai Bois Belize and L’Eau Mixte will be coming soon…
Nice! I’m curious about Bois Belize.
I wore Chanel No. 19 yesterday. Today, I decided to go another direction… found my little samples from Jolie Laide, whose perfumes are named after various Nouvelle Vague films. So…tribute to French cinema. Truffaut.
Jules et Jim on one wrist. Baiser Volés on the other.
They won’t last, since they’re natural. So, I think later will be a PdN scent. Likely Riviera Verbena. Very rich French history…roots of Guerlain, top niche perfumer, classic French location.
No. 19 is always right when perfume is called for. 😉🥰
Spent most of yesterday without WiFi and this morning I don’t have it. A lot of people are without their internet access and quite mad. We should have it by sometime this evening. I am hoping that work has their’s because I don’t want to burn through all my data. Wearing no 5 edp today. What could be more French?
Scent twins!
Of course, you smell marvelous!
I think no 5 and Shalimar would be top contenders for most French, imo anyway.
Dawn, hope you have internet again by now!
Was all set for Cristalle Eau Verte this morning and then went with Petrichor, instead. It just smelled so terrific yesterday, all day, and today will be a long day of travel (if all goes well, we will be back home around midnight), so I may as well smell the way I want to smell.
Safe travels! I’m sure it will feel good to be home.☺️
Hope that your travels today are uneventful!
Thanks! The bad news is that our flight (second leg, from LGA) was canceled. The good news is that we found out about this before we headed to the airport, and even better is that we didn’t get stranded in LaGuardia overnight. Delta rebooked us almost immediately, although that wasn’t clear to us from their initial communications. We are scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning — fingers crossed!
BOO Hiss for a canceled flight! 😭
SOTD = Maison Violet Sketch
😍 and points for sure! Not sure if I’ll have any house or scent twins but the day is still young.
France – I haven’t been in 7-8 years and if I were to go with my every decade visit, I will be going there again in 3-5 years, discounted by when we couldn’t really travel much. I’ve enjoyed every visit, each with a different purpose and different engagement without and with perfumes.
Has anyone here signed up for Threads? I have not and may never. I understand that to sign up is easy but to remove it one has to also deactivate Instagram. Thoughts?
It’s a NO from me regarding Threads.
I’m happy to use Instagram and Twitter. That’s enough “social media” for me.
If you are on IG please connect
Hi!I am,but not posting at all!🌹
So true!
Yeah, no threads (or twitter for that matter) for me. Just not the kind of platform I enjoy. Even Instagram is more of pain than pleasure for me. I’m slowly losing any interest in almost all social media. 🤷🏻♀️
I agree.
Many actresses like SJP promoted Threads as a place to have conversations about books, libraries, being kind etc etc.. But are we really seeing it??? Is this world living up to its social media-driven ideals? Not really…
I was flabbergasted when I looked at my Insta feed – I’ve slowed down quite a bit!
I didn’t know it was hard to remove threads or else I would have never joined. I prefer Twitter and IG
I’m thinking about doing a digital detox in August. This isn’t a complete shut-off of tech, it’s more of an exploration about tech habits and how to make them more wholesome.
I’ve considered it as recently as July 1st but I think I will get stressed out with a digital detox.
Another NO vote here, but I also never had a Twitter account. Good to know about the removal consequences though, yikes!
Yep – how is this even acceptable?
I like Maisoin Violet! I have travel sprays of Tanagra and Pourpre d’Automne.
I did start a Threads account, but I’d left Twitter a while back. Instagram is my “go to” but I rarely even check Facebook anymore.
I just started using Facebook again, more so for Holland America posts than anything else.
Threads is a hard no for me as well. The only social I’m on is insta. And my other half told me the caveat about the insta stipulation if you sign up but then want out. Pass.
It looked like a pilot (at least from the rudimentary you have to delete your IG account if you want to get out of Threads).
Never was on FB or Twitter, so Never will be on Threads.
And yes, if you dump Threads you will also have to kill off your Insta.
🤦🏻♀️ and this from a tech company!
I posted a pic of my SOTD which I hope won’t be taken down. Come to think of it, my post of MY OWN bottle of Chanel just got swallowed up into the ether.

🇨🇵Bastille Day!🇨🇵
And Happy Friday!
SOTD!
Extra-french in “vintage”(circa 98/99)Guerlain Mitsouko edt.Fresh as if it was bottled yesterday.Oakmoss!Peach!Just dreamy.
Classic french perfumery to me would be Guerlain,Caron and of course Uncle Serge!
It’s going to be a very good smelling day at NST!
🇨🇵✌🏻🇨🇵
You smell great!
Merci!
Lucky you, having that version of Mitsouko!
Closing out this week’s CP and the Long Lost L’Artisan Archive project with L’Eau des Merveilleuses.
I’d have loved to be able to participate in your project! It’s just so sad that the Long Lost L’Artisan list seems to be growing ever more quickly in the last couple of years.
Yeah…pretty much all of my favorites are a thing of the past.
I followed the lead of so many others today and also went for what I’m sure must really be the frenchiest of all French brands, i. e. Chanel.
For added frenchness I then not only chose a scent from their Les Exclusives collection which somehow feels like a whole different level of French, but also opted for one with a name that – try as you may – can’t even be defrenchified. I’m talking of “Beige”, of course, which, if translated in basically any other language, just ends up as … well, “beige” :-).
I love Beige. You smell great!
Commando for now because I’ll be spending some QT with niece tator tot this afternoon, but once I get back I’m planning to indulge in a cloud of Lubin Grisette for the CP.
Drinking Chocolate Puer again today. It is funny how I want to wear different perfume one day to the next, but with tea I will get in a groove and stick with the same one/type for a week or more.
I went to the movies for the first time since 2020 to see the new Indiana Jones movie and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was significantly better than Crystal Skull and at least as good as, and maybe better than, Temple of Doom. The good air conditioning at the theater was nice bonus too.
Enjoy your niece time! And thanks for sharing some chocolate puer!
I also really enjoyed the new Indiana Jones film – he’s doing great at 80!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It’s on our list as well, but we’ll wait til our daughters are home from summer camp and go as a family. We’ve raised our kids on all those classic ‘80’s movies, so of course they’ve seen all the others.😆
Missed the 4th Indiana Jones movie… I’d heard it was terrible. Nice to know the current one is decent!
Enjoy hanging out with your sweet lil niece!
Banana, strawberries and yogurt smoothie
This morning picked Charles Jourdan Vôtre, a designer of shoes originally and tonight it’s vintage Caron Parfum Sacré, very baroque perfume.
WAY too warm for Parfum Sacre here! Phew!
It was only around 20C hère and raining:
I chose my hardest-to-pronounce French perfume, Oeillet Bengale. 😆 Might be a bit too warm for it today, but I had to do it.
Happy Bastille day, and have a great weekend ahead, hopefully the weather is nice where you are.
I just realized that the name is only French thing about this scent. The brand, the perfumer…. not French!
It counts because you Frenchified!
Guerlain French Kiss
Great choice!
It’s a heat wave here and I’m taking a break from my samples. I am in the French perfumer (Giacobetti), house (Malle), and scent name En Passant, six sprays. It’s so nice!
En Passant reminds me of my childhood walking around my neighborhood (without the watchful eyes of a caregiver) and stopping to smell all the lilacs on the trees. I use to stick my whole face in the tree and remember the feeling of the warm softness
Lovely!
I’m wearing L’Heure Bleu today, I suspect many of us reached for Guerlain this morning.
Hey Cousin!
Starting the day in Le Dieu Cerf (Saint Eustache) by Ralf Schwieger in conjuction with Etienne de Swardt, the ELDO founder. Very French indeed!
I went on a “pilgrimage” to find this fragrance at Saint Eustache church in Paris and also had a lovely conversation at the welcome desk when I bought it. I enjoy the citrus, aromatic notes and wood. It’s been a perfect summer fragrance. Here’s an interesting article about it –

conjunction
Happy to say that Ettienne was born in South Africa, and the ELDO brand is named for one of our provinces! But YES to your pick for today!🇨🇵✌🏻🇿🇦
😊🇿🇦
Ooooooh, that perfume trek sounds fantastic!
In a surprise move went with ELO’s Bendelirious!
This makes me happy.😉✌🏻🇨🇵🇿🇦
Wearing Parle Moi de Parfum Orris Tattoo for the CP.
Happy Friday! 🌻
Hope it was a good day pl67!
Guerlain Lights of Champs-Élysées! This was a limited edition and I believe it was only available through duty-free, etc. I swapped another MUAer for it, years and years ago. I think the fact that it was named for a Parisian landmark and created for export gives it extra-Frenchness!
I think so too!
I’m in Chanel Paris-Venise today.
Perfect.
For today’s cp I’ve chosen a fragrance that’s rarely mentioned: Jean Charles Brosseau’s Ombré Bleue from his Fleurs d’Ombre line. The Parisian couturier is famous for his millinery and fashion creations and the classic Ombré Rose, but the Ombré Bleue is my favorite. Built around Egyptian jasmine and orange blossom and enhanced with benzoin and musk, solar and sand notes, I’ve read it’s meant to conjure up the scent of tanned bodies on vacation stretched out on the beach in the shade of sandy pines. The bottle is exquisite, said to be reproduced from an antique mold; its frosted glass octagonal shape is chiseled with exotic flowers and reveals a liquid of blue as beautiful as any sea. I’m claiming extra French points because a. I bought it on my one and only trip to France; b. I layered it over BBW’s French Riviera body lotion; and c. and BBW’s Bon Voyage body spray. As close as I could get to a second trip to France (I wish!).
This the season for fests! And finally, it’s my town’s turn this weekend. I only have to walk 2 blocks to enjoy great food and bands and can even hear the music in my backyard. Last night’s high-energy band was a favorite of mine seen numerous times: They’re famous for performing 40 songs in 30 minutes and accompany the song snippets with video clips of the original artists/bands who performed the song. It’s so cool; everyone sings and dances and there’s such a wonderful sense of community and camaraderie that erases any differences between us. Hoping the prospect of rain stays away the rest of the weekend🤞 (we spent part of Wednesday night in the basement as 11 tornadoes touched down around us but luckily we were spared). My granddaughter is joining us for tomorrow’s Taste and I’m really looking forward to that.❤️
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!🎶🎵
I’m an Ombre Rose fan but I’ve never tried the Bleue. It does sound fantastic!
There’s also a Violette Menthe fragrance from this same line. Nice in summer with that refreshing crisp mint note.
Glad the tornadoes missed you! That made our news. Hope the weather holds out for you, have fun with your granddaughter.
Thanks! There were 11 confirmed tornadoes that touched down Wednesday. I read that Illinois has had more tornadoes this year than any other state. Yikes! 😱
The Ombre Bleue sounds gorgeous!
Always loved the Ombre Rose bottle, but the perfume itself didn’t like me one teeny tiny bit.
I thought of various options this morning but decided to wear Mitsouko, though not in scent version but in the body cream. I have an almost-empty yellow tub of it that I must have purchased around 15 years ago. It’s separated a bit but still smells wonderful and has the nicest non-greasy smoothing texture. My legs feel so soft. It creates a gentle aura without being heavy, which I was afraid the juice would in our current 100 degree weather. I’ve felt I was wafting elegant little scent breezes as I went about my business today, which included a fun trip to Nordstrom to buy some needed lingerie items and check out ]offerings on their Anniversary Sale. I did some damage there but will wait to report on it until tomorrow. Stay tuned!
House twins today!
Frenching it up today with Guerlain Cologne du 68, which is one of my comfort perfumes. I’ve had a stressful work week with a lot on my plate and needed this perfume as soon as I thought of it this morning. Finishing up my lunch now and then just a few hours left of work.
Hopefully you will have some R&R this weekend, and can chill out.
I think that a good mix of relaxing and having fun is definitely in order!
Joining the folks who are wearing 31 Rue Cambon. Confession time: I did not like this at all the first time I tried it, back around 2016 or so. Fast forward a few years, and it is lovely! Of course, the version I tried is now made of Unobtainium…
SOTD = 31 Rue Cambon EdT, from the Sample Stash. I figure it’s double points, because French address and French perfume.
You smell nice and I have a ton of it, just sayin’. We can chat further on email when the weather turns into Fall – I can’t wait!
Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind.
I was very pleased with how 31RC handled today’s weather.
I think we should definitely get double points for extra-French-ness with it being the same address as the perfume name.
For sure!
I didn’t get along with it either. I should resample.
Yep.
My tastes in perfume have shifted over the past 6 or 7 years. Some things I still like, some things I can’t stand now that I used to like, and some things I used to dislike I now like.
I am changing my previous comment to say that I am wearing my sample of Diptyque Orphéon in memory of Olivier Pescheux. I had not heard he passed until today.
A nice switch.
I wore Ysatis for the cp today. I’m glad I finally know how to pronounce it. Does anyone know what it translates to?
I have no idea what Ysatis means either.
Perhaps “the internets” can tell us what it means! I have trouble pronouncing unfamiliar words, and often seek help.
