Friday scent of the day 7/14

Posted by Robin on 14 July 2017 294 Comments

Happy Bastille Day! And yes, I know the French don't say Happy Bastille Day, or anything like it. Which makes it an even better fit for our community project: see if you might possibly have anything French in your collection that you could wear today? Plus extra points for extra-French-ness, or for silly perfume Frenchification.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I did not plan well for this project when I was packing for vacation. I am not going to be accruing any extra points, but I am wearing French: Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil body lotion.

Reminder: 7/21 is Ernest Hemingway's birthday. Do what you will with the theme, and tell us why you chose your fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My favorite French perfume house for the past year has been Berdoues. So today I am wearing Scorza di Sicilia, Selvo di Brazil and Somei Yoshino…the originals from the Grand Cru Collection that I still don’t have in full bottles (yet!!!)

Berdous is on my to try list. I found an upscale pharmacy that carries a line (about 40 minutes drive from where I live), now I have to find an excuse to go perfume sniffing :)

Because it’s a mouthful of French: shalimar – parfum initial – l’eau (eau de toilette)

Bastille Day means parties so I am in Fête de Molyneux, a bright joyous sixties floral chypre, heavy on the oakmoss.

If you’ve smelled chypres from the sixties through the eighties, Fête isn’t particularly novel or revelatory: the classic citrus-oakmoss-labdanum structure with a flower bed in the middle, no surprises. But it really is perfect, a delight.

L’Artisan Parfumeur L’Eau de L’Artisan for me today, partly because it sounds incredibly French, but mostly because it’s the only one of my French scents that I can handle in the oppressive humidity and heat we are having.

    Happy Friday everyone!

Happy Friday! Yesterday I got my partial e bay bottle of Mito Voile de Extrait (spell check changed “Mito” to “amigo”) and this perfume is my friend! The first spray was similar to vintage Safari, although more intense, and I was sooo excited. Five minutes or so later it moved to something that made me think oh no, then it settled into the most beautiful creamy scent I have ever experienced. Two sprays yesterday around 5pm, and at 8 am today before showering Mito is still present. This is the most amazing perfume I’ve ever smelled. The bottle says “made in France” so half points for French day! NST’s review of Naja, and Deva also with Onda, steered me towards Vero Perfumo, so thank you!! ❤️

I’ve only tried Rozy EDP but it’s actually my favorite of the Vero Profumos I’ve sampled. The others I’ve tried are all Voile d’Extraits; of those my favorite is Rubj. I don’t know if the passionfruit makes the other EDPs too similar, but I like the greater projection and the touch of lightness.

Wearing Guerlain Sous le Vent (reissue) today. I could see it being beautiful on someone else but it’s not for me. A good thing considering how hard it is to find.

Although the passionfruit note runs like a thread through all the EDPs, it doesn’t make them similar. It adds to the pleasure of Onda and Mito, but cannot redeem Rubj from its orange-flower awfulness, or Kiki from its lavender lethargy. Rozy was just okay. (OBVIOUSLY if you love orange flower or lavender or rose, your response will be different to mine!)

Frah-cah Robert Piguet, continuing my tuberose/hot, humid weather connection.
I prefer my 3 Stooges taught pronunciation Fray-kiss.
    Extra long workout.
The sleepover was earlier this week, and rocked !
No electronic devices, save for 15 minutes before French Toast/Bacon breakfast we prepared together.
Acrylic Painting Art Class, 7 rounds of Dance Contest ( I won 3!), Pizza and Ice Cream Sundaes dinner ( spinach salad with Gorgonzola dressing for Uncle Bear) , and Perfume-opoly.
20 years ago their Mother and Aunts customized Monopoly as a Christmas present for me.
Boardwalk and Park Place are Shalimar and Samsara, etc.
Cards modified “You drop your most expensive bottle, go back 20 spaces.”
Good times and circle of life.
    :D
    Carpe Diem. Peace.

You modify with the houses you enjoy.
Mine has Cacharel, Chanel, Boucheron, Guerlain, JPG, Dior, Mugler, etc.
        Railroads become stores.
Card spaces are mini and factice.
They printed and glued photos of perfume bottles on the spaces.
You do the banking, try to obtain monopolies, and build hotels to bankrupt your competitors the same.
Quite clever, and one of the most thoughtful and valuable gifts I’ve received.
        Thanks for asking johanob!

I love Fracas, believe it or not wore it frequently in middle school.

But boy did I over apply, had no idea at the tender age of 11 that I was choking out my family and school mates! I appreciate it on others but I think I over did it a bit… :)

I’ve recently pondered the pronunciation of Fracas. I’ve always said “FRAH-cuss,” but have heard Americans say “FRACK-ass.” Is this a regionalism, or is someone in the wrong?

But note, you’re saying that way because you’re saying it in French. If you’re saying it “American”, it’s really closer to your first, like FRAY CUSS. I don’t think FRACK-ass is correct in any language, but I could be wrong.

Robin, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is great in any shape.

Serge Lutens day. I chose Un Lys – a beautiful lily soliflore – because of fleur-de-lis symbol. Only now I realized that because of its obvious ties with monarchy maybe it is not a good choice for Bastille Day. Oops. :D But it’s French! And it’s lovely.

We always celebrated Bastille Day because it is my dad’s birthday. He would have been 94. He was a very happy and kind person with an amazing quiet wit.

I’ve been experimenting with an ELDO exploration set, and so far the only one that isn’t dreadfully sweet on my skin is Jasmine et Cigarette. Wore that at bedtime last night, but TODAY am in Malle’s Eau de Magnolia – hat tip to lovely Laura who introduced me to it. Vive la France! :)

SOTD is Serge Lutens “Vitriol d’Oeillet”, in a nod to the niche French perfumes I’ve been enjoying since joining NST.

Notes: nutmeg, clove, pink pepper, black pepper, paprika, carnation, wallflower, lily and ylang-ylang.

Well, I plan my week to try new samples Mon-Fri and to build up to the best at the end. Of course, as they’re all new to me, it doesn’t always work out that way. Today is one of those days. I could barely smell this one, and it didn’t survive a 35-minute stroll into work. The only vitriol is mine, reserved for this incompetent perfume. :^D

Back home and keeping with the French theme in Parfumerie Generale “Querelle”.

      Top: citrus, black cumin and cinnamon;
      Mid: myrrh, cinnamon and incense;
Base: vetiver, oak moss and ambergris.

This is a properly-executed bitter (but not green) perfume. What I wanted Caron Anarchiste to be, or what Romeo Gigli “For Man” should have been. Sadly, it doesn’t last very well (a common problem with Parfumerie Generale stuff in my experience).

Went to the dentist wearing Andy Tauer’s Au Coeur de Desert and was a hair’s breath away from a root canal. The best thing is that the dentist said I smelled good and my mother said that it suited me. Got up this morning and paid some bills wearing the extreme dry down of it. Now I am about to take a shower, put on vintage Bal a Versailles. I haven’t figured out the concentration yet, though.

Either your dentist is a real bargain, or your insurance beats the pants off mine. I can’t even get a cleaning for that price – and that’s after insurance.

I am wearing Mitsouko. The more I wear it the more I love it. I find that it is great even in 90+ degree Texas heat. So far, Guerlain is one of my favorite perfume houses. I have decants of Jicky and Chamade, both of which I love and plan to buy full bottles. Bearing in mind that I don’t like prominent vanilla notes (couldn’t deal with the Shalimar edt that I bought and gave it away), are there any recommendations for my next decant purchase in a Guerlain fragrance?

This one was hard because there were too many options. Most of my collection is French. I loved the idea proposed by someone at the beginning of this week to choose a fragrance from a French perfume house that you have the most bottles of. So I chose Parfums de Nicolaï. I think I have full bottles of most of her fragrances, at least the older versions of things. I’m obviously very partial to her creations and finally chose New York as my SOTD. Luca wrote an exquisite and heartwarming review of it in The Guide: “….New York’s exquisite balance between resinous orange, powdery vanilla and salubrious woods shimmers from moment to moment, always comfortable but never slack, always present but never loud. It is one of the greatest masculines ever, and probably the one I would save if the house burned down…….”.

Last year, I discovered TDC for the first time in a perfumerie in Toulouse, France. “Where are they from?” I asked the SA. “France, of course,” she explained with a grin, “as the name suggests.” Soon afterwards, she showed me the ELdOs and pulled out Putain des Palaces, giggling with the other SAs to watch me do a double-take at the inappropriate name.

So that’s why I know that they are French :)

I went with Black Jade by Lubin not so much for it’s name but more for the backstory about Marie Antionette attached to it. Not to mention the altercation between a perfume reviewer and Lubin around the debut of Black Jade where everything was blown out of proportion.

    Le Quartoze!

    1) Was ill the past few days-and stayed home in my cool house. Horrid menstrual related migraines. My house cleaners are made with vinegar, citrus essential oils, borax and lavender, so the with the fresh air from the mountains and black out curtains I was to take in very healing aromatherapy.

    2) Am in a combo today: Terre d’Hermes applied after shower and then spritzes of Molinard Jasmin. This is a perfect and light combo for summer for men and women! :-)

    3) At the end of the day I am gonna share some Champagne and cookies. I think of the great Napoleon, the doomed ancien regime, the hardship, pain and endurance of the French people and the beauty and ugliness of French culture, so admired in the Western world- and the world in general.

Sorry, late to this. The Molinard seemed o last on me through a day at the office for 6+ hours. There is a white musk componnt that makes it both light and long lasting. Combined with the Terre d’Hermes this made a very nice citrussy/jasmine/rosey combo.

    I was wearing Azemour les oranges, one of my Favourites today, but now it has gone and, after much deliberation I plumped for Jubilation 25, obviously not technically French, but very much in the classic French style;
” .. Jubilation is Diorella revised by Jaques Guerlain, with more amber and woods than I thought could fit in there, and none of the spring in Paris freshness of the original. The result is luxurious and likeable from the start, and it is only later that one realises that Catherine Deneuve is speaking fluent Arabic”
I really like this review in The Guide, plus the perfume practically makes me swoon with pleasure!

I have spent all morning cleaning the fairly filthy upstairs. What I hate about cleaning isn’t the manual, hard work or time, it is knowing it will all be dirty again in short order.

The entropy of the universe is constantly increasing. I took AP Chemistry back in the day. ????????‍????

No matter how clean I get it or how meticulous I get (I’m a pretty good cleaner…I could go professional someday ;) ) it will all revert back to chaos. But one can’t live in filth and chaos overlong without repercussions and so I clean.

I just received a couple of the TF Vert samples in the mail and shall be trying those out this afternoon…as I attack the disorder downstairs.

I am also contemplating making a completely non-necessary Nordstrom order to take advantage of the sale and reward myself for persevering in such an unstable, disordered universe. ????

The struggle is real. My family thinks I’m silly because when we get ready to go on a trip I like to clean and tidy the house top to bottom. They say don’t bother, nobody will be here to see the mess. But when we return home it feels as if the house elves were working overtime. I get an extra week or so of feeling like I’m on holiday (from cleaning at least). :)

Ah, see I hate cleaning because of the manual labor and time but do it only for the (brief) payoff. And even then, I don’t do it very often. But I’m with tiffanie re: cleaning before vacation. Nothing’s worse than coming home to a dirty house after time away.

Every week when I clean my bathroom, I am amazed–and annoyed–by how dusty it is. (It’s like all the dust in the house collects there instead of going anywhere else. Why, Universe, why? The filter in the AC is fine, so what’s the deal?) But, as you said, it’s just going to revert to that state again, so I generally refuse to clean it more often. Really, there’s only so much cleaning one can do before turning into Monica Geller. ????

Still waiting on the doo-doo to hit the fan. I am hearing onimous rumblings, though. I have a feeling that this is gonna take months to shake out. Bleah.

I have been wearing vintage Dioressence. It smells like the definition of what I once would have thought of as “French Perfume”.

For me, that’s Chanel No 19. But I’ve never smelled Dioressence, vintage or otherwise.

When I woke this morning and briefly pondered today’s theme, YSL Paris seemed the obvious choice. One of my favorites, but one I wear seldom, so the impetus is appreciated.

Have shifted within the city to YSL Rive Gauche, a beauty that took me some time to appreciate.

    Happy Friday, all!

There’s a restaurant near me in CA called Left Bank that I consistently accidentally refer to as Rive Gauche. By now, my non-French-speaking boyfriend knows what restaurant I’m talking about when I say that :)

    Oops i am late.
My scent of Le Quatorze juillet was
Fou d’Absinthe, Olivia Giacobetti for L’artisan Parfumeur.

Perfume name + association (absinthe and creative Paris in the 19th century), nose and house are all pretty French.

I wanted to wear French Lover, Pierre Bourdon for Frederic Malle. Also very French. But it was cold and rainy today here in the lowlands and I craved something warmer.

So late to the party today…

I didn’t want to risk the ire of Madame Defarge, so I passed on all my Chanel and Guerlain options and chose Cabochard for today’s project. I think it’s a bit more up her alley. Or allée. ????

Have a yourselves a wonderful weekend, NSTers!

Wonderful week off — a staycation to be exact! Helped with VBS in the mornings.. 300+ kiddies. I was with the 4 years olds and enjoyed every minute. Well, maybe not the mini meltdowns. In the afternoons I did some city exploring, finally sent to Aedes new store which was very nice and ate out a lot.

Have mainly worn Fève Délicieuse this week as it’s an easy, don’t-have- to-think-much kind of scent.

They’re so dear. Had one set of identical twins that completely won my heart.

Hooray for VBS! Our theme was Arctic Express. The set looked fabulous when I saw it last Sunday.

Last to the party! Just a dab of Chanel No 5 parfum today for work and Chopard Casmir tonight for bedtime. Good night!

Chanel Cristalle! I still think of Chanel as the ultimate in French fragrance, in my heart. And as we know, “le coeur a ses raisons que le raison ne connait point!”
