Thursday scent of the day 3/9

Posted by Robin on 9 March 2023 172 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Barbie Day. Birthdays: Vita Sackville-West, André Courrèges, Ornette Coleman, Keri Hulme. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Guerlain Après L’Ondée, which smells like it was made before I was born, and of course it was. I would be just fine with a trip to 1906 Paris.

Reminder: 3/10 will be Time Travel Friday...be as creative as you like with the theme. You could wear a perfume that reminds you of a trip you once took, or that brings you back to a prior period of your life for any reason, or that calls to mind a place you'd like to visit in the past or future.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Un Jardin a Cythere again.
I ordered a 4 pack of the travel sprays to split. Hermès did not charge shipping but did charge tax. Each 15 ml travel spray will be $39 plus shipping. Call dibs here and email me at p k wisdom (one word) in the yahooland. I have room for 2 more splitees.

After a terrible night of sleep Tuesday, I slept like a rock last night! It felt great. Strange dreams though. I was back on campus, a recurring dream for me, and living in the dorm. At my current age! Ha!😆

Woot, count me in on a travel spray! Will email shortly.

I also had a college dorm dream last night. It was a weird one.

OMG fine, twist my arm then. I can’t believe nobody else took it. I said I wouldn’t buy it unsniffed too, I hated Lagune.

I’m not even an enabler usually so I don’t know what you into me. I sure hope you’ll like this one. I wasn’t a fan of Laguna or Monsieur Li, but the description of Cythere sounds more promising.

SL Feminité du Bois, or, as I always think of it, Cedar Augustus. Nothing feminine about it: I have to assume the name was given so it wouldn’t scare women away from an overwhelmingly woody (and resolutely genderless) scent. It’s every inch a Lutens release — dried fruit, mysterious spices, a touch of weirdness. And it even fits the theme, because I bought it on my way out of Tokyo in 2012, a trip I look back on wistfully: I sort of wish I could go back, not just to the city, but to the time.

I have some vintage EDCs that are definitely the olfactory equivalent of an EDP. I’m thinking particularly of Eau de Courrèges from the seventies, which for a cologne is just amazingly multifaceted and durable: still light, not un grand parfum, but a real fragrance rather than a splash.

I’m in a little spritz of Coco EdT this morning. My mom wore it on special occasions and I remember, as a child, watching her while she got ready to go out. I know many of us have those sorts of memories. She passed away six years ago today. ❤️🌹

Dear NSTers, thanks so much for all of the kind birthday wishes yesterday. I had a lovely day doing simple, fun things. I did make out like a bandit at the consignment store – scored a pair of Chico linen pants (and they’re long enough!) and a linen blouse to match. Ready for summah! 😎

Ted Lapidus Creation (1984 according to basenotes). It doesn’t remind me of a time, but it does remind me how much my nose and appreciation of perfume have changed. I was just a kid in 1984, and of course would have shouted “old lady perfume!” if I had smelled this then. Now I love it so much. A sweet violet chypre. Guess I’m an old lady ;)

Wearing a few drops of Chanel Cuir de Russie parfum today — I picked it up yesterday as a birthday gift to myself <3

I am surprised at how good the parfum is! I had only tried the EDP before this. The parfum takes all the best parts of the EDP, smooths it out and amplifies it. The aldehydes and florals are smooth, the leather incredibly buttery. The EDP is still very good, but it has a roughness to the edge that the pure parfum does not. So incredibly elegant.

Currently in Bath and Body Works Dream Bright and it’s not really my deal. Found out that my federal refund will be in my bank account on Monday. Just trying to decide if I want that ginormous bottle of Infusion d’Iris, Au Couer du Desert, PHI Une Rose de Kandahar or Gris Charnel. Can only get 1. After my shower, I think I will wear Infusion d’Iris. But have to vacuum first.

The oud oil from Marrakech. Someone on here asked me what perfume it smells like? I am still thinking 🤔

I am missing Morocco so much.

If you download the app Radio Garden you can tune into live radio stations in Casablanca or Marrakech and hear some of the sounds you might be missing. It is great fun for ( foreign) local radio stations and language learning. Maybe a few Moroccan novels will keep you going until your next trip.

Ignoramus that I am, I was unfamiliar with every single person in the first paragraph. So. I looked them all up and almost spit out my coffee when Holme was described as “a very definite and determined child who inherently hate[d] assumed authority.” Go on with your bad self, lady! Now I feel I MUST read her because she’s my spirit twin. 😀

I bought a pizza stone and oiled it as per directions, tossed it in the oven and 10 minutes later had smoke billowing out every window. All the fans were on high to exhaust the fumes/smoke but I still managed to set off the fire alarm. 😬 Does anyone have any knowledge of these things? Do they smoke like this all the time?! It doesn’t make sense because the smoke is ridiculous and I imagine the odor would penetrate anything being cooked..?! Anyway, averted disaster by taking it out and leaving it on the picnic table to smoke and cool to it’s heart content. I was attempting to season it as multiple videos on YouTube directed. None of theirs smoked though…🤔

Still wafting a bit of Vanilla Flash on my hoodie, but I’ll switch it up as soon as I finish my coffee. We had two beautiful days of blinding sunlight (but still very cool/cold temps) and it was SO welcome. Back to gray, cloudy, and rainy again today. Bah! 👎🏼

Listening Alison Weir’s book about Anne Boleyn last night on Audible. Wowza! 😳

Do read The Bone People, it is fantastic.

Never had a pizza stone but now you’d convinced me not to bother, we do not have a good exhaust fan in your kitchen and we already trip the smoke alarm regularly.

The only reason I bothered with it is 1) very cheap kitchen item and 2) the most important- RV ovens don’t cook ANYTHING evenly as residential ovens do, so most RVers recommend a pizza stone on the lowest rack to more evenly distribute heat so your items aren’t burnt in the bottom and raw in the middle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I will go check out “the bone people,” thanks!

          Ah, that makes sense.

Well, when my husband seasons our iron pans he tends to do it outside. This says do it with a window open, which means maybe you are also better off doing it outside if you have a way to do that?

Thanks for that link. I did it correctly for the stone that I purchased, but apparently I should have left in the oven and let it “bake off” the olive oil until it stopped smoking. Honestly, I thought it was going to go up in flames. I should have followed your husband’s lead and done it in the fire pit yesterday instead of the oven. Oh well. It is now sitting on the picnic table getting rained on…😄 That book sounds very intense! I’m not opposed to violence in books and films when it’s appropriate and necessary to the scene, but I CAN. NOT. handle abuse and violence towards children and animals. Just can’t do it. I stopped watching The Power of the Dog as soon as Benedict Cumberbatch started whipping the horse. Nope. Nada. No Way. I’ll have to find something else by Hulme to read.

Back in the day when I still ate pizza I LOVED our pizza stone. Nothing else can get a crust properly crispy. You do have to season it, but once that unpleasantness is done, it’s done forever: you just wash the stone with a little plain water and it’s good for the next pizza.

I am time travelling to just a month ago when I went to Okarito, where Keri Hulme lived for many years. It is a beautiful place, a windswept shingle beach facing the Tasman sea on one side and an amazing lagoon, and views to the alps on the other. At one point in history it was a flourishing gold mining centre but now is small and quiet, home to many birds. Wearing ganja.

I love this CP! Missed the cue this AM as I am just logging on. So I am in the final dregs of my small bottle of Baiser Vole. I have enjoyed this one, and Cartier gets extra points for making a 15 ml bottle of thick, heavy glass and an elegant design–feels timeless in the hand–but I won’t be replacing it.

Also, Vita Sackville-West! Happy Birthday. I have a first edition of her “Twelve Days” floating around upstairs somewhere. When I have time I would love to make it a project to read everything she has written. She is someone who inspires thoughts of time-travel perfume for sure.

Shout out to irisjasmine who wore Gap Heaven yesterday. That was the fragrance I wore exclusively during my first year of dating DH because it was the only fragrance he complimented me on. It was also my weddings day scent.
As I said yesterday I will wear it and Un Ete En Provence and Nocturnes de Caron (wish I had bought the extrait way back when!) this week as they evoke such wonderful memories for me.

About to transform myself into a grown-up (good clothes, good jewelry, makeup), for what will be a very long, important, and taxing rest of the day and evening at work. I will probably go with 28 La Pausa, because it’s subtle enough not to offend people, but it makes me happy. No travel memories, although I pretty much always have it with me when I travel, unless I have run out.

Tauer Sotto la Luna Tuberose for me today, for memories of a lovely vacation in Switzerland in 2016. We stayed at a friend’s house while they were away, and it was fun to live like a local for a little while! We also did a day trip down to Italian Switerzland, where I’d never been before, and it was beautiful.

Fzotic Monserrat today. I went to a little one-off art class last night and Monserrat felt kind of appropriate for that. Still wearing today. I’m thinking about signing up for a further class: painting with watercolors, this time. I can’t even begin to say how happy I am that spring is here and the days have more light.

My tax refund hit my account last night!
I was so worried since I had to close accounts and open new ones due to wallet theft.
    Yay!
    Tucking away for Africa trip.
SOTD is the new Parfum d Nicolai Caravanserail.

It takes me to Iran from 1973 to 1975 when my then husband and I drove from the North @ the Caspian Sea to the south at Bandar Abbass and west from Iraq to east in Herat, Afghanistan.

The work was to build a telephone and telegraph system across the country. There were not many main roads or paved roads and many of the trails we followed often had the remains of a caravansary from the Silk Route.

We would jump out of the land rover and explore what we could.

This fragrance is really nice. and very much a reminder of so much of the middle east without drowning one in oud.
It’s not super original, there are others with honeyed and dried fruits, but the name and the feeling spoke to me so I got a small bottle.

SotD Beyond Paradise from an OG bottle. I’m only, err, accustomed to the opening, but I really like it after about an hour and it lasts most of the day. I spritzed again for a visit to our favorite Mexican restaurant later – looking forward to yummy pico de gallo and maybe a mushroom quesadilla or a tostado and some beans! I ventured into my vegetable garden today to worry over whether the rather thick leaf mulch I put down has broken down enough. We did not have a lot of wet, freezing weather this winter. I ran over some of it with a garden weasel to good effect. Also, discovered chives and cilantro “springing forward.”

My time travel for today is going back to Disney World trips as a child via Hiram Green Dilettante. It’s my favorite rich orange blossom perfume, and it evokes memories of the souvenir bottle of Florida Water perfume that my mom bought on our first trip there when I was 4. I so often would go smell under the cap of the bottle on her dresser and was just obsessed with the stuff. Years ago I gifted her a bottle of Ava Luxe Neroli Blossom, and she recently ordered a replacement bottle for herself. 😊

My washing machine broke today. I have someone coming out in the morning to look at it.
Fingers crossed for a cheap fix🤞

Also… why is it that we cross our fingers for good luck and also cross them when we ( well not me, lol) tell a lie? Is it to protect the liar from bad luck of getting found out? So many questions in this head of mine.🌞

    SOTD = Diptyque Kyoto

Love it! 💓. IG post may be a tandem one with my SOTD tomorrow!

This seems to be a week of perfumed and other packages! The new Francesca Bianchi Byzantine Amber, a package from pfsh, the sample of Poof! I also got a Ring-like doorbell (I have yet to figure this out). Oooh, and I’m expecting a shipment of mini-owls too. Life is good!

I have been participating in a daily novena (for 9 days) for the repose of R’s soul. Normally I wouldn’t as it is a pray the rosary ritual plus a recitation of very Catholic phrases but I wanted to support my friend. There’s drama with R’s sister, subject for another discussion.
