Tuesday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2023 137 Comments

It’s Tuesday. Birthdays: Benjamin Franklin, Anne Brontë, Betty White, Eartha Kitt. RIP Gina Lollobrigida. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm copying Dawn's choice yesterday, in vintage Guerlain Jicky. Tea at the moment is Rose from Art of Tea, mixed with random black Assams.

Reminder: 1/20 is David Lynch's birthday. Pick a favorite Lynch work or character and wear a scent to match, or pick a theme (split roles? doppelgangers? surrealism?) and work with that for your fragrance choice. If you don't know (or care about) his work, you could just wear something a little weird or off-kilter.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: With apologies, in honor of David Lynch we are substituting coffee for tea this week. (Bonus reading: David Lynch's Philosophy on Drinking Coffee at Vice.) Top image shows cherry pie and coffee from the Double R Diner in the David Lynch series Twin Peaks.

Drinking a cappuccino for David Lynch and wearing Samsara for Blue Velvet since they are both from the 80’s.

I had never heart of that movie until I was living in San Francisco many moons ago, and they had a theater near my apartment on Fillmore that showed movies at midnight. A friend of mine said let’s go to see Blue Velvet, I can’t sleep and you are awake. So spontaneously we went and she knew all about this film, and was shocked that I had never saw it before…and this was discussed after the film was finished when she saw the look on my face…

Samsara really hit the spot today. I thought I had lost my precious parfum bottle and rediscover while I was organizing.

Such a shocking movie. I watched it with friends for the first time during the lockdown (we were on the phone). I knew it was David Lynch but even still it surprised me.

Yeah, I found that movie pretty disturbing and I don’t think I’ve seen it since the ‘80s because once was enough for me. You tied your sotd in perfectly! Plus you smell great!😀

I have never been able to bring myself to see it. I have a lot of respect for David Lynch but that doesn’t mean I’ll watch everything he makes!

I think Bruno Fazzolari’s line FZOTICA is an apt match for David Lynch. They both have a sense of skewed reality, the erotic, and saturated color. From the FZOTICA website:

“Fah-ZA-tic (pronounced like exotic and erotic) is the place for all things Fah-zolari. I’m a painter by training, and scents have always made me see colors in my mind (synesthesia). For years, I experimented with making perfumes for myself. I first put a perfume in an exhibition with my paintings in 2010. I loved how it transformed a cold, impersonal gallery into a lively place of conversation. So for each of my shows, I started to include a scent.

“To my great surprise, my scents developed a cult following. In 2013 I added bottles for sale through my artist website labeled simply with my name. As sales continued to grow, I quit my job as an art professor. In 2017 I rebranded as FZOTIC, my first foray as an entrepreneur.”

My lemming of the day is FZ’s Ummugumma throw:

You smell wonderful. Estée Lauder is my favorite house. I have a vintage-ish PC that I love to smell In the bottle and in the beginning when I splash or spritz it on. But this is one of the few EL’s that does not play nice as the wearing-hours go by.

Good morning, all! I am wearing a slightly tweaked classic, which is David Lynch – esque right there, yes? Shalimar Ode a la Vanille Sur la Route du Mexique…..This is something Lady Jessica would have worn for her Duke, on their migration from Caladan to Arakis. When she has donned the Bene Gesserit role, she would wear something else, maybe a mix of protective aromas and beautiful but dangerous odors – oleander, foxglove, lily of the valley??? That would be a perfume that David Lynch might show an interest in. All right, now to shopping…

Lacoste Pour Homme. A bag of fruit-flavoured Skittles up top, then spices and woods and vanilla. Despite the obvious presence of apple (my sworn enemy), I love this. It may start with candy, but underneath, it’s sophisticated.

So David Lynch directed an advertisement for Opium in the 1990s so I’m going with that ( sadly not 1990s Opium). I’ve just been outside to see if I could spot Sagittarius and Mercury . It’s not quite 5am and it turns out it’s misty and raining but it’s warm and I wish I could post the bird call this morning, the back and forth of tui – clear, bell like, loud – cutting through the dark.

My son has a job interview today, and I’m excited for him, but, it’s 120 miles from home.🥺 I knew when he moved home 14 months ago it would just be “temporary,” but I’ve gotten quite used to him being around. I wished him the best of luck anyway.☺️

Finally getting the Moby attended to this morning and I’ll be so happy to NOT see the “check engine” light. SOTD = Honore des Pres I Love Les Carottes

    Iris – lovely!

My drawer clean out is not done, but I took a look at the contents and did an initial purge of plastic utensils. This week, I will sort out all the other items. Other than a few items, everything else is going to be donated. Why? Do I need 10 sharp knives? No. Do I need 20 wooden / plastic / metal chef mixing spoons? Again, no. If I didn’t know they existed prior to yesterday, do I need them at all? Nope. It will be done this week and I will take them to the donation center. I did clean out location 2 (tiny, in the whole scheme of things) so I am pretty happy.

Someone asked yesterday if the mystery drawer was intended for cutlery. I believe so but it was never used this way.

    Slowly but surely …

I did some number crunching over the weekend and updated my semi-fancy perfume-spending spreadsheet and it was quite sobering.🤣

In 2021, 70% of the full bottles I bought were bought blind/unsniffed and last year for 2022 it was 66%. That is probably quite high compared to others I am guessing and going to endeavor in 2023 to try to get down to 50% blind or less. ehaeheh

You may ask…why so many blind? My answer: some are cheapies from discount sites…it you can get an entire bottle for less than $50 for example. Others b/c I have a pretty high success rate w/ blind buys and it would be tough to get a sample otherwise. But my 2023 goal will be to sample first as the collection is getting too big and I don’t want it to become burdensome…mentally or space-wise. In 2020 I got rid of maybe two dozen bottles but I came back w/ a vengeance in 2021 and 2022. 😈

This week I am sampling (pats self on back) stuff from Luckyscent and tried Ambre Chromatique (a fresh amber that is unisex to masculine leaning), Tonka Bodykon (fruity, spicy tonka that I quite liked though note there is a bit of dreaded for some apple) and Dulce Diablo (holy apricot, Batman! plus vanilla which I also really enjoyed w/ the first wearing).

Congratulations on your sampling, I too sometimes blind buy, it’s the gambling aspect, but it’s the only gambling I indulge in 😃, so there’s that.

Yes, the gambling thrill for BBs is very powerful for me too. No interest in regular gambling but buying perfume blind has a certain exhilaration that buying sniffed doesn’t. 🎲 I am otherwise non thrill-seeking and risk-averse too. Behold the power of perfume! 😁

You are a lucky gambler than I am since I can count on one hand the number of successful blind buys I’ve had.

I’m sure I’ve seen more David Lynch films than I can bring to mind now. I’ve seen Blue Velvet at least twice and I’m completely blank on it.
Meanwhile, I’ll wear an easy option, ELdO’s Spice Must Flow. The 1984 Dune movie had a lot of faults, but some scenes were fabulous.

TOTM = Taylor’s Scottish breakfast tea with a little half and half to mellow it.

I had an optometrist appointment this morning which turned out to be blessedly routine. I’ve had some flashing in my field of vision in the last few days, so I got it checked out. My retina is fine; evidently this happens sometimes in older people and there’s no real reason for it. 🤓

I was commando for the appointment and am now chilling in Organza Indecence. Totally inappropriate for the cp, but the hand wants what it wants!

I spent the day in Shalimar Philtre; I’ve realized that I have numerous iterations of Shalimar and its flankers but I reach for Philtre far more than the others, it’s the lavender that draws me in, I think. Tonight, I was in the mood for sweet, so I’m in FS Insomnia, sweet but not sickly and one of the few coffee notes I enjoy because it reminds me of Irish coffee.

I rummaged around and found a small decant of L’Arte do Gucci that I didn’t know I had. Holy cow, what a stunner 🌹 Why oh why was it discontinued.
I don’t know anything about David Lynch beyond Twin Peaks, of which I saw a couple of episodes and recall nothing. I’ve got some perfume in mind anyway.

I’m wearing Sacred Scarab but not with anything in particular about Lynch in mind. He’d probably like scarabs though!

The Elephant Man is one of my all-time favorite films. I’m trying to think of a scent for it. There are options, maybe Dzing!, or something beautiful in honor of his mother, or a cologne like his doctor (Anthony Hopkins) might wear, or something for all those steam engines?

I’m also a big fan of Eraserhead but will NOT be trying for a scent to go with that!

Sacred Scarab I’d tie with one of the strangest movies I saw as a kid:Dr Phibes is coming alive.
Mad scientist killing off people in all sorts of exotic ways. The one scene I’ll always remember,is a person that was in this golden chair in the shape of a scorpion, their arms locked inside the chair’s arms, with a big urn full of scorpions next to it,holding the keys to unlock the chair. After much strangling he managed to reach into the urn, only for the scorpions to start climbing out, while Dr Phibes plays this eeerie music behind a pinkish-red sheer curtain on the organ…Lol!

It has felt like a Monday here today, too. Started out with drastically oversleeping, ugh. Was commando perfume-wise, which never improves my mood. But, thanks to reading NST, I’m coming out of it. ☀️

Tea today was a cup o’ joe in the car. I’m not a big David Lynch fan, so my only CP play will be Friday. Going to try Vetiverissimo from my new sample set. I’ve been in a vetiver mood again.
