His mind would never romp again

Posted by Robin on 30 November 2010 9 Comments

David Lynch directed four commercials for Calvin Klein Obsession and Obsession for Men in 1990. One of them featured Lara Flynn Boyle (of Twin Peaks!), but that one doesn't appear to be on YouTube, unfortunately. Here are the other 3:

First, Heather Graham and Benicio del Toro; the passage is from F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. More below the jump...

Next, actor James Marshall (also of Twin Peaks — he played James Hurley) reads a passage from Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.

Last, the late actor Rodney Harvey and an unknown actress; the passage is from DH Lawrence's Women In Love.

Then she married someone else; Then, after he looked her up years later, he let her drive his car and while doing so, she intentionally killed a woman, and then she left him to take the blame for the vehicular homicide.
    But she smelled great!

My favourite is this one for Obsession for Men: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYAFI-EJBQA&feature=related

Forgot to add, I remember being surprised when the boy really cut the front of his hair! Ah the innocent ’80s…….

Oooh, I’d forgotten that one entirely! Fun.

There was a great SNL satire of this ad, with the line if Obsession Compulsion is a Sin, Let Me Clean, with an ultra chic woman obsessively cleaning the (already architectural minimalist) set and all the ultra chic (and already ultra sleek and clean) models.

I never noticed the hair cut before.

Ha, ha – unfortunately that was rather prophetic as to what later happened to perfume!

Beautiful – crazy – beautiful! I can’t think of any recent perfume videos over the last year that were this interesting – aside from the Old Spice man, in a completely different genre, LOL!

    Thank you, Robin and Bear!

The second one was definitely the most Lynch-y, with that resonant soundscape he is always so good at. Fun! Thanks.
