Happy Friday and happy Veterans Day! (Plus, a handful of literary birthdays: Carlos Fuentes, Kurt Vonnegut, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mary Gaitskill.) Our community project for today: wear something simple and comforting. Thanks to Cobrarose for the suggestion.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Aftelier Ancient Resins body oil. If the afternoon calls for more complication, I might add a layer of Tauer Rose Delight Body Oil.
Reminder: on 11/18, wear a fragrance with a peppercorn note...pink (aka schinus molle or baies rose), black or white.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Canada every November 11th is Remembrance Day, a national statutory holiday. The weather is pleasant today (in advance of a tropical storm bumbling up the coast which is going to dump a *whole lot* of rain on us tomorrow) so we’re going out for a nice long walk a bit later.
I have a number of scents in the simple-and-comforting category, because it’s nice to have something you can just tuck into without having to think about it much, something you know will feel good (and not offend anyone). Today I’m in Yves Rocher Orange et Chocolat EDT, from their 2010 Christmas collection: it’s exactly what it says on the label, vanilla-laced Terry’s Chocolate Orange, a little burst of pure joy.
Speaking of Christmas limited editions and theoretical simple pleasures, I got to smell The Body Shop’s Spiced Orange EDT while I was away and I’m afraid it wasn’t very nice, a bit harsh and synthetic, so that’s $20 saved.
I like the name Remembrance Day better than Veterans Day, although I think the goal is the same.
And also, you smell wonderful!
I love Terry’s chocolate oranges. I bet you smell amazing!
I also prefer ‘Remembrance Day.’ You smell great! I wore the Orange & Chocolate last week for the candy theme; it’s a favorite of mine as is the Neonatura Cocoon you wore yesterday. Two of my very YR favorites!
I’m early today.
My sotd is Chanel Chance eau Vive. It’s pretty simple. Chanel + grapefruit. I find Chanel comforting because it smells traditional. It smells solid and well made. It reminds me of good furniture, like my grandmother had. Not the cheap stuff made today.
Today is my last good weather day. I have snow in the forecast for the next week. Let my whining begin!🌞
I’ll be whining with you. Did you have a beautiful day yesterday?
It was gorgeous!
So sorry about the snow! But you smell great in one of my favorite Chanels.
It really is so good! I think it gets overlooked.
I hadn’t thought of Chanels in that way, but you’ve articulated how I feel about the house perfectly.
Sorry about the snow. You can send it to me if you like!
Thank you sistine. I struggle to articulate my thoughts when writing so I am very happy that it came through alright.
It would be so great to be able to swap weather like we do perfume!
We are having a little snow today and the temperatures have plummeted. I am afraid it is going to be cold now the rest of the season.
I completely agree with you regarding Chanel. I picked Chanel today too.
Hi there house twin!👋
Snow!!
I will be soaking up your summer travels and observations!🌞
House twins! I have on Chanel 1957 ^^
I think we are triplets now!👋
Begin? 🤣
You smell good!
Lol! I was hoping nobody would catch that!
I will change it to let my whining continue!🤣
I’m house twins with you as well today!
We are in good company!
Happy Friday, NST! Today I’m wearing Sonoma Scent Studio Incense Pure, which I find comforting. It’s simple, I only smell calming hot incense.
Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous here, 74F and sunny. Took my mother out for a long ride, then sat on my porch with the windows open, in shorts. Supposed to snow tomorrow, boo.
Shorts! I’m in my warmest sweater (see below)
It’s much cooler today and it’s supposed to snow tomorrow so yesterday was the last time for shorts!
Rather than 74, we are at 47 this morning – not in shorts!
That’s great you got to get out with your mom🌞
I took her to see the house where she grew up and the current owners were outside so we stopped and met them. It was an unexpected treat. 😊
❤️
Aww!❤️
I have the feels for this – ❤️❤️❤️❣️
So awesome!
I’m just getting up as I had to wake up and worry for a while during the night. (We had a rain leak with damage to walls and floor on one side of our house. It’s not terribly bad, but you know, there’s always something to deal with.)
My SOTD will be VC&A Bois d’Iris. Technically it may not be simple, but I find it so. Iris and vanilla woods, wonderful.
Ooh, you smell lovely. I hate leaks – they cause me such anxiety.
Oh no, good luck with the leak! At least you smell great.
Oh dear, I am so sorry!!
Leaks and water damage are the PITS to deal with. Major load of suck.
Was 19° when I left the house this morning so I’m in the warm, comfortable Lattedoro. Love this one
Don’t know the house, but that sounds quite warming.
Good morning all!
My SOTD is Shalimar MVP. I’m starting to regret not buying a back up bottle. Oh well.
It’s going to be a rainy day as the remnants of the latest hurricane/tropical storm pass through GA.

Tea is Mary W. Shelly from Simpson & Vail tea, a fruity green tea
Wonderful perfume, ltsg!
In the comfy Ambre des Merveille. Needing its psychological warmth, as our building woke up to no heat, again, despite the furnace guys pinky-swearing that everything had been fixed.
Oh no, no hear!! Brrr. Hope it gets fixed asap!
Oh no, I hope they can get it fixed for real ASAP!
You smell amazing.
Ack. Best wishes!
Oy vey! I hope that you have heat now!!
Simple and comforting had me thinking until finally remembering I’d picked up a little bottle of Love’s Baby Soft for like $2.00 a few years ago so wearing that today. Powdery musky simplicity and what memories it brings up! I was obsessed with this stuff as a kid (what, me, obsessed with perfume?!). I had a little shrine on my dresser with my Love’s Baby Soft collection, along with my Strawberry Shortcake dolls and Peanuts mini pencil crayon set. I can see it all wearing this today, like it was yesterday but clearly it was not 😉
I wore that in early junior high. My mom hated it and bought me a bottle of Exclamation, then “accidentally” knocked the Baby Soft into the garbage can and took the trash out without noticing.
I love my mom in many ways, but she can be shady as heck. Good thing I really liked the Exclamation!
Your mom and mine must be related. “Shady” is a mild adjective for mine…
Yeah, I had to think for a while to come up with an NST appropriate way to voice my thought.
Add my mom to the family reunion! Lol
I still have a scent memory of Love’s Baby Soft, though I think I was just a few years too young for it (I started high school in the mid-’80s). But I loved my Strawberry Shortcake dolls! Someone bought me a Jean Naté set with perfume and powder when I was in middle school, but I never really wore it.
My dresser shrine was Benetton Colours & Liz Claiborne in the triangle bottle. And of course I had a bottle of Primo! 😀
I ❤️ the word picture you painted.
I wore and loved Love’s Baby Soft in junior high, and went thru at least 3 bottles of it then.
I’m wearing a favorite combo for the cp: Demeter’s Honey with their Beeswax. This always reminds me of La Via del Profumo’s (aka AbdesSalaamAttars) Honey Bee. Speaking of which…
PSA! 30% off at their website November 11-30. The code is 22-black-friday-22.
Happy Friday, all!
Ha! You smell good! I originally thought that the 30% off was for La Via del Profumo.
It is! Their website is now
naturalnicheperfume.com – I almost sent it to spam. Anyway, you know who I’m talking about!
I have so many comforting scents, it’s a category I gravitate to, so hard to pick. I think I will wear Guerlain SDV, a longtime favorite.
Same here with the comforting scents. SDV is among them so I may join you later on after my MVP fades away.
You smell beautiful, love SDV.
I love SDV!
Just topped up with another favorite, Cuir Beluga!
I just found a forgotten decant of that one last night, cazaubon! I know what I’ll be wearing today…
Wearing April Aromatics Calling All Angels, from a sample that I am about to finish. It is a beautiful incense perfume and I find it simple comforting to wear.
At home today for Veteran’s day. Having my first cup of coffee with a pumpkin waffle and feta cheese. We are expecting the remnants of Nicole to arrive this afternoon, so it will be a quiet, rainy day watching the Thanksgiving Challenge on Food Network.
Happy Friday! ☕️
Happy Friday to you PL67! You smell lovely.
Thank you, Adanst! 🌞
Very nice perfume and comforting!
I went to Costco this morning despite the rain, trying to be a little productive. I also need to finish decanting the splits so I can mail them out tomorrow.
We have had light rain on and off so far. I ran a quick errand early this afternoon and back home. Not looking forward to the 40’s next week!
Am I missing out on waffles and feta? Do you put syrup on it?
Yes, you are! 😀. I put on it either syrup, butter or cream cheese!
Very wet here today! I had a couple of heavy downpours this afternoon that looked almost tropical.
It started raining hard already. According to the forcast it is going to be wet until very early in the morning and then we will have a gorgeous warm, sunny day tomorrow in the 70’s. Last warm day of the season. After we will be freezing here!
It’s pouring, the ravens are croaking. I’m drinking a cup of Earl Grey tea and wearing the uber simple and comforting Wood Sage and Sea Salt. It’s nice to have a lovely scent cocoon in heavy times.
You smell serene.
No points for me, I’m afraid — I chose Dryad to blend with the outdoors while I direct the arborist later this morning in pruning a coralbark maple away from the eaves and (sadly) removing a very deceased flowering cherry tree. It’s the second casualty of the horrible heat wave we had two summers ago — I was hoping the cherry would bounce back this year, but no go. Ah well. Anyway, happy Friday to you all!
Happy Friday SherriG!
I’m sorry about your tree.
Yeah, me too. I always hate to see a tree go.
You smell great! Will you plant a new cherry tree, or something else?
Well, there were three of them in a row, perpendicular to the house, and the one that died was the one closest to the house. Probably when they were first planted enough light filtered down to them, but now it’s very shady in that corner of the yard, so we’ll most likely leave that spot empty. The tops of those trees were the view out my bathroom window, and since the other two trees have spread out a lot the view really hasn’t changed much. I’m still sad about losing a tree, but it could definitely have been worse.
I just paid our arborist bill, so you have my sympathies!!
Ah yes … it’s helpful that they’re all such nice people. They sent out a crew of four guys, and every single one of them was so polite and so willing to take instruction and answer questions. It’s why we keep using the same arborist company.
I’m in my all time favorite comfort scent: Chanel 1957! Powdery white musks, lightly abstract floral. It’s my second skin.
The atomizer started to get faulty though — it squirts a stream rather than a nice spray cloud that it usually does. Any tips on how to fix this?
Might be a sign to buy a backup bottle!
Happy 11/11 aka Singles Day aka Pocky/Peppero day!
You could try running the spray nozzle under some hot water and rubbing gently, or use a qtip dipped in a little alcohol to clean around the tiny hole in the nozzle. Those methods have worked on wonky hairspray sprayers I’ve encountered.
thanks!! gonna give that a shot
I’ve adulted all night and now I’m ready to be completely irresponsible! 😀
Sometimes I get this wild hair like maybe I’ll buy a diamond bedecked tiara, or a gargantuan statement necklace with a 3 karat tanzanite. Maybe even a huge spendy floral arrangement. Like almost touching the ceiling BIG. The ones that are a living work of art. Of course, I don’t do any of those things because I’m so boringly responsible. I just pay my bills, pay my savings account, and look like the homeless person I am.
Now that the warm weather is behind us, I’m back to baggy jeans and flannel shirts. No more summer maxis and midis with a crop Jean jacket and cute platform sandals the make me look like I’ve got it together. I made the sign of the cross over my warm weather clothes as I packed them away. Too bad I don’t have access to some holy water to sprinkle on them.
Anyway, all that nonsense aside, I’m wearing SB Smoked Ambergris which is quite comforting indeed.
I love having flights of fancy like that!
‘And oh- you smell incredible.
Very comforting! Nothing wrong with the flannel shirts, either.
I’ve been eyeing a flannel shirt or two the past few winters. Maybe this year I will finally get one.
They are so soft and comfortable, especially as they age.
Vanilla Diorama today.
I commented yesterday that Shalimar Tonka was back in stock on the U.S. website and that I bought a BUB. It’s’ still in stock today 🧐 and I am wondering if it’s in error and orders might be cancelled like some experienced last month.
Work has been crazy the last few weeks and I haven’t posted as much but my goal is to carve out more time to do so.🥰
Hope you get a good break soon. How’s your sister doing? I hope she is back to full health and strength.
Hi Kanuka! Thank you for asking about my sister. ♥️ She is doing great overall but actually came down with shingles just a couple days ago. 🙁 She is feeling better though w/ some meds the doc prescribed. She finished her chemo back in Nov of last year (time does fly) and has two scans since and both have been clear!!! 🙂 Her most recent was just a couple weeks ago.
You smell great! And thumbs up on your ST purchase.
Not sure that Chanel Coromandel is a simple scent, but it is comforting to me so that’s why I am wearing it.
Thanks for your service for any veterans out there!
Not wearing it today but I think it is a comfort scent. I recently bought a FB of Coromandel EDP so I now have a FB (shhhhhortwo) of every iteration of Coromandel.
House twins with you today, Kris!
I’m wearing White Cube and trying to get warm. The past two winters I’ve had to increase the thermostat temperature despite wearing a sweater or a fleece. If the increases keep up at this rate, it’ll be 86F in here when I’m 75 🙂
At least you will have home grown bananas and pineapples.
Growing my own food will be a benefit, as the heating bill will be sky-high!
That’s no joke, my mother’s house is so hot. The thermostat is at 76F 24/7.
Same at my parents’ house, I had to block the heater vent in my room to avoid suffocation it was so hot.
My Mom’s room at the independent living facility was stifling hot. When I mentioned I was a little uncomfortable, she asked if she needed to turn the heat up! Gack! 🥵
It was Armistice Day yesterday (11th) and there was a few seconds silence at 11am on the radio. By chance I happened upon a memorial service by the Bridge Of Remembrance ,a monument in town, and listened to the “ sermon” and bagpipes. There was quite a big crowd though ANZAC day ( in April) is our biggest military Remembrance day. It was very moving and some very elderly returned soldiers seated at the front. I tried a few perfumes and liked Tam Dao which I hadn’t smelled before. The house is in deep mist this morning.
https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/armistice-day
I was just thinking of my great grandmother. Both her sons were killed in WW1, and then her husband died. When the govt. offered her a war pension she told them to get stuffed as there wasn’t enough money in the world to ‘replace’ what she had lost. She became a spiritual medium and lived off that. What a strange story.
What an amazing story! How incredible to have such heartbreak, integrity and inspiration in one sentence.
I think I would have liked your great- grandmother.
She raised two young daughters, but both of them started work in the mills at age 14. I would love to know more about her
Wow, that is a strange story!
Your great-grandmother sounds like she was a force of nature.
I am not participating because I tried so many scents this morning. I went to Guerlain Spa to try Musc Outreblanc as well as Cherry Oud, and then went to Ogilvy’s , tried Sl Fille de Berlin confit de parfum which I loooved and it was on sale.
Planning to wear Dovana this afternoon after I shower.
What fun!
Did you end up getting the SL Fille de Berlin confit de parfum?
Yes, I did !
Nice!
Ooh, I need to try that FdB confit de parfum!
I’m in Old Spice, in memory of my father, a thirty-year Army veteren, who served in three wars. It’s also very comforting. How many of us, as juvenile boomers, bought our fathers Old Spice for Christmas or birthdays?
What a great choice! My father did not wear scent, I sort of wish he had, it would be a comfort now that he is gone.
I pulled out my Scherrer EDT today, this is a scent that i could wear everyday and everywhere… A real no-brainer for me.
Sadly my BF mother died today on her 88 birthday, so he is a bit sad today. But she lived to an old age and died peacfully at home. Is there a better way to go?
I’m very sorry for your bf loss.
Condolences to you both.
I’m sorry. But yes, going peacefully, at home, at an advanced age, seems like the best option as long as one has been able to stay mentally and physically active to a point.
Seriously yes, that is the way to go. But condolences to your bf.
My sympathies to your BF on his mother’s passing. But she seems to have had what my relatives would call “a good death”.
My condolences to your bf.
So sorry to hear this, but totally agree that is the best possible way to move on. I wish more people were able to die this way, and not in hospitals and nursing homes bereft of comfort and familiarity. 💔
So sorry for the loss of your BF’s mom.
I’m very sorry for your boyfriend’s loss. It’s lovely to hear that his mother’s death was peaceful and at home.
How sad, my condolences.
I am wearing Tom Ford Vert Boheme.
It is comforting to me because I used to wear Chanel Cristalle when I was in my 20s, and this is the closest that I have found with that glorious burst of galbanum.
I love that first sniff!
You smell great! I love that one too, I still love Cristalle (and many other green fragrances, especially with galbanum).
Happy Friday. Meant to spray some Gypsy Water, must’ve still been waking up because I sprayed Violette Volynka instead. I can’t say it’s comforting but it’s a simple fragrance and very pretty.
A belated good morning after more wrestling with Google’s password manager. I’m heading out for Saturday’s supermarket shopping in Un Jardin Sur La Nil.
I’m in Body Shop Smoky Poppy, my usual Remembrance Day perfume. It feels comforting to me, so I’m claiming CP points, too.
Some years back (just before we had Ockeghem Teen…ugh, don’t want to think about how many years ago back that was), we were in the UK over Remembrance Day and it was lovely to see how many people came out and went to church for the day. We were in Ely and people were flocking to the cathedral. We do all wear our poppies here, but I feel like it’s a bit more distant for us.
Nice tie in with poppies & Remembrance/Veterans Day.
Hi beautiful people!
1) Am in Fresh Cream- a perfect fresh, creamy yet light simple scent for staying indoors.
2) Watching blue bird go up in flames is WHOOSH BOY and I am glad I turned down both the FB and Twitter low level offers when I did.
3) My next door neighbor decided to sell his place- he has the same townhouse as me, but not updated in any way other than having bamboo flooring on the ground floor. But yet- his pricing is very aspirational for what it is, and it’s lingering on the market given the interest rates and lack of updates. Meanwhile, his front veggie patch has go wild and feral. Sigh- so this weekend I will be cleaning that up, because what else can I do?
4) Made homemade jam, chutney and hard cider!
5) Also I finished the wallpaper trim in the kitchen and added a brass rod for holding coffee mugs and kitchen mitts.
What have you been up to?
You smell cozy!
Re: #3 – I assume he no longer lives there?
CP points for me: my comforting scent, also a nice way to mark Veterans/Armistice/Remembrance Day, is Jean Patou’s L’Heure Attendue. It is just lovely, drying down to a soft, warm base of sandalwood, amber, and opoponax, with just a touch of patchouli.
That pairs nicely with the day!
That Patou sounds gorgeous.
I find iris perfumes very comforting, as long as they are not sweet, and as it happens I got my spray sample of Irisqué from Providence Perfumes in the mail so that’s what wafting from my left wrist. Very subtle and beautiful scent which melts into my skin. Not simple, but certainly uncluttered. Reminds me of Cartier’s L’Heure Fougueuse, in a very clean, all natural way. I also got a sample of the new Lapsang Lover, which also fits in nicely because I find tea scents very comforting. This one, as it develops on my right wrist, is dark, leathery, benzoin rich and definitely right up my alley. Will have to see if I need full bottles of one or both of them.
Both are excellent!
Robin, Happy Birthday + 1 Day! Wishing you all the best in the year ahead! 🥳
Today’s community project of ‘simple and comforting’ perfectly suits the day: after numerous unseasonably warm, 🌞 days with a record-breaking 76 degrees yesterday, November finally arrived with temps some 30+ degrees colder and falling all day, and snow predicted this weekend, so simple and comforting is most welcome! My choice is an old favorite, L’Occitane’s original (probably mid-late 90’s) Vanille edt, a warm, caramelly vanilla that’s like being wrapped in a warm, cozy blanket. This was my first purchase from my first trip to a nearby L’Occitane boutique, shortly after they opened; I’m halfway thru my BUB and I’ll really be sorry when it’s gone. I also have the tiny Parfum extrait, which is delicious as well.
Thinking of my dad on this Veterans’ Day and the 3+ years he spent stationed in England during WWII – he was drafted just a few months after he and my mom were married and she did not see him for those 3+ years – Imagine that! Though I was a young girl when he died, he is with me in so many ways, not just in his grandson whom he never met but who is uncannily so much like him, but in the young man who nearly 5 years ago decided to try and find descendants of those who had served with his grandfather during the war and tracked me down and visited me for the first time just recently, and also in my long-lost cousin with whom I was recently reunited because he had found several of my dad’s military artifacts he remembered my mom had given his mom when my dad died and he wanted to return them to me. There’s something so warm and comforting about these special remembrances, and the Vanille I’m wearing today really enhances that soothing feeling.
Wishing everyone a warm and comforting weekend ahead!
I have never smelled that Vanille fragrance but I can see how comforting it can be.
You’ve recounted a very special story. Thank you.
Claus Porto Tuberose body cream
Thinking about my family members who have served in the military today. A solemn remembrance fits the dreary, rainy weather.
SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau EdT. Lillyjo got an enabler pin for this one. I have a little bit left in the decant she sent me, but my FB is waiting for its turn.
Have you sprayed the atomizer yet? I love the way it sprays.
Thank you to your family members for serving.
My little bottle is still in its shrink wrap! I have decided that it gets opened after I thunk your decant.
I think any of my family members would be a little embarrassed by thanks. For some of them, it was the patriotic thing to do, especially during WW2 and/or Korea. For others, it was a way to better themselves.
Isn’t that one great. I am just finishing my second bottle of L’Eau. I have my third bottle ready but won’t open until spring or summer since I don’t wear much of this in the winter. One of my favorites.
I agree with you that L’Eau doesn’t seem to be a Winter scent. I pull my heavy hitters out for cool/cold temps.
One of my all weather scents!
Thanks to your family members who served.
My nephew marched in the parade in NYC. I did not see it myself but may be able to catch a video of it.
Wow, how cool that your nephew was in the parade up in NYC!
Turns out that my younger nephew is going into the Navy now. He wants to be an airplane mechanic. I wish him all the best with it.
Going for full CP points in Auric Blends Amber scented oil. You can get it at your local grocery coop. It’s less than $10. It’s warm and spicy and simply comforting. Busy day finally bringing in big potted porch plants, hopefully with most of the spiders and other bugs brushed or shaken off. Our yearling cat was wild with excitement and had to be taken out of the Norfolk Pine pot twice! They can be closed off from him, thankfully 😅
Oh oh, maybe there’s catnip lurking in there somewhere!
When I had orchids, the cats liked to hang out by them in the window. I figured they were entertaining “ferocious jungle kitty” fantasies in their heads. 😼😼
Almost forgot to post! 😱
SOTD = Providence Perfume Company Lapsang Lover
When Robin first announced this, I immediately got my large sample and it’s a winner for me, which is really what matters when it comes to perfume. 😍. I do need to give it a few more wearings to get the nuances but for now, it’s a cool / cold weather perfume.

In other news … I absolutely hate when drivers take stop signs as a suggestion rather than a traffic rule. No, nothing happened, but it is a shame that these drivers are allowed to still be on the road. 🛑
I totally guessed wrong on your sotd! I had a couple in mind but my main guess was Cuir Beluga. Lol
Agree about the rolling stop people.
That Lapsang Lover sounds great! I don’t think I’ve tried any Providence Perfumes.
I thought you might be in No. 19 EdP for today. Nope! 🤣
Crazy drivers seem to be everywhere these days. 😡
Very late in Diptyque Eau Lente – slow and easy.
