Happy Almost-Friday! Birthdays today: Alex Haley, Steve Wozniak, Inès de La Fressange, Joe Jackson. What fragrance are you wearing?
Today, I'm not really noticing the magnolia in Arielle Shoshana Saturday.
Reminder: on 8/12, wear a fragrance with a magnolia note, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning!
Sotd is MFK Pluriel.
Yesterday afternoon I was testing out The Body Shop’s Gold Addiction and surprisingly it smelled exactly like the inside of a Lush store! I find that quite amusing.
Currently drinking Marco Polo tea.
Oh, you smell great!
And that is so funny. I forgot about that whole TBS series, had to look it up. For anyone curious:

I’m wearing Herbae, which I found in my box of minis while searching for something else. It is sweeter than I prefer and not really herbal, but it is pretty.
Another I still have not tried!
In Chanel 19 EdT. I have not worn it in a long time and it is always a delight when I revisit it.
Happy Thursday! 🌞
Such a great perfume 💚
One of my big favorites for all seasons and a must have in my collection!
Happy Thursday!
👋
It’s such a great perfume,I recently thunked a 50ml edp!
But somehow not quite “me”,and that’s OK too.I enjoyed it while it lasted.🌹🤗✌🏻
It is! I prefer the EdT, but the EdP is also amazing! A staple in my collection!
You smell lovely! I love the edt version.
Thank you, Gail! I also love the EdT, which is my favorite version!
Like you, I prefer the EdT. But the EdP is no slouch!
Both are wonderful classic scents!
I’m in nineties-ish Grès Cabochard and it is terrific.
It is indeed — you smell marvelous.
You do smell marvelous! Even the newer version is good.
Made it back to the house in BC and am very busy cleaning, sorting and preparing for the move at the end of the month. Yesterday I wore Chanel No. 19 Poudré, which lasted all of 15 minutes. Will wear Hallucinogenic Pearl today.
Best wishes on your packing! And short-lasting perfume is the bane of my existence:)
Bon courage.
Good luck with the packing!
If all goes according to plan, next year June I’ll finally be moving as well!
Good luck with the sorting and packing!
I’m so excited for you!
Good luck with all that sorting and packing! 🍀🍀🍀🌈
Yay for getting out of there!! (Boo, obviously, for having to pack.)
Yay! Hope your packing goes well!
No magnolia here right now — the hand went straight to the tiny bottle of Paracelsus. Mornings yesterday and today have been cool and overcast, with the promise of afternoon sunshine. Yesterday’s morning hours were greyer and its clouds denser; this morning the light is almost silvery through the cloud cover and the air feels dewy. One of my favorite kinds of mornings.
Sigh. Still too hot for Paracelsus here.
It is here too, except for early morning. I’ve been in Eau d’Hadrien EDT the bulk of today. 😁
Scent of the morning is Azman Where We Used to Live with top notes of Honeysuckle, Magnolia and Blackcurrant bud from the August Indigo sample pack.
I’m going to sample some of this brand. There was one in particular that caught my attention.
What do you say about this fellah, allo?
I appreciate that it’s a well done fragrance but for some reason it doesn’t stand out to me personally. I’m not familiar with the line at all but I would be interested in trying others.
I’ll be curious what you think of the ones you sample.
Thank you. Its a savings for you, then.
Does the honeysuckle stand out?
Not to my nose.
Just a drop of Black Orchid today. I thought it might have magnolia but it’s gardenia. Life in the Louisiana tropics is good but hot and steamy. It will be nice to get home next week.
That is one part of America I’d love to visit one day!!
The food is especially wonderful 😊
I have been twice, both times in high summer, so hot & steamy is exactly how I think of NO. Hope you are eating well anyway!
Sigh, eating all too well!
Glad to hear it, even if I understand the sigh 🙂
August is whizzing by! I’m wearing Cedrat Enivrant this morning.
It really is!! I like September but after that it’s all downhill for me…I wish we would have a few more weeks of hot but not crazy hot weather.
Downhill for you means uphill for me – wahoo!
🙂
I’m not sure if I have any perfume with a magnolia note, and as usual, I’m too lazy to find out. 🙂
SOTD is Calligraphy Rose, a long time favorite and consistently reliable choice.
The kittens are back home and doing well!
I’m glad to hear the kittens are back home and well, you are an extraordinary cat mama!
Love Calligraphy Rose, you smell fabulous.
Yay for the kittens!
I saw you were looking at options other than cones for your girls.
My little one had an inflatable ‘donut’ from petsmart/pet Co.
Love how you love them, Lisa. Have you seen the kitten ambush video on Instagram?
Keep ’em all!💜💜💜💜💜
Yay for happy kittens!🥳🥳
Good to hear that the kitties are back home and doing well!
Good news that the boy kittens are back with you and doing fine after their neutering!
Diptyque’s Eau des Sens for me today.
Also have the soap which I’ve put on a shelf in our main bathroom because the smell is so powerful it works well as an air freshener.
Their soaps are amazing 🙂
Are they worth the price? You all have turned me into a mini soap collector.
Well, it’s nearly a philosophical question — is any soap “worth” $35? But the 2 I have used have been amazing…first, unused, they scent a space for ages, then when you finally use them, they still smell great.
But the best soap I have ever experienced was a Frederic Malle, a very kind gift. If I was a rich man, I would just buy FM soaps, if they even still make them (I am not sure).
I have yet to try a Hermes soap, one day I will buy one.
Then again, Nesti Dante bars are around $10 each, and they are huge and amazing.
It’s been a busy week for me with my parents visiting and lots of back-to-school preparation for my son. He’ll be attending a new school for the first time since pre-school, and this new school will be 10 times larger than his old one! I guess all the activity is good for keeping me from being anxious for him.
I’m going to wear Serge Lutens l’Eau today, the magnolia note is quite prominent on me.
I hope some of your son’s friends make the transition to the new school so he has some familiar faces. Good luck.
Back to school time already? Wow.
Wearing Theorema today. It’s been so long since I’ve worn it, I forgot how gorgeous it is.
You smell wonderful! I love Theorema.
What a beautiful choice.
Wearing a sample of Miller Harris’s Peau Santal. To my nose it is a delicate, transparent sandalwood, that reminds me a lot of Santal 33 minus an trace of pickle (which is very pronounced for me in S33).
At the office today, drinking Tazo Chai tea.
Interesting. Wish Miller Harris had not become so hard to find here.
They have a US website now. Hence my haul of samples…
Seriously? 😲
Thanks, forgot that. But I used to be able to try them in several stores near me, which was nice!
Done with the visit with my perfume-“allergic” (more like “phobic”) friend, so SOTD is Byredo Pulp, a scent that would send my friend into a tizzy 🙂
You know, sometimes I wear the “difficult” perfumes on purpose…haha!😉
Difficult perfumes would be a cool Friday project
YES to this.
Pulp is so great!
Pulp is the only Byredo I have tried that really rang my bell.
Happy Thursday kids! It’s my Friday so yay for that!
I was in a rush out the door this morning,so no SOTD,which is TRULY rare…!
Lillyjo you asked about my latest hobby:Gilding is when you use gold leaf/other metal leaf(reallllly thin sheets of metal, thinner than the finest paper) to cover things like frames or furniture, even ceramics and glass. There’s a technique called water gilding that I am trying to master, they use it to restore really old frames and antique gilded furniture.a new(ish) passion, besides perfumes!
Hope everyone is having a good day!
I sure did.
XO’s
Oh gilding! Got it. I had read gliding. Lol.
That’s a cool hobby!
No my darling,I’m super-afraid of heights so I’m not gliding anywhere anytime soon!Haha!😉
Have a great Friday evening. Your hobby sounds interesting.
Thanks Aurora, hope your day was splendid as well!
What a cool thing to learn!
Yes!
It’s gonna be “J B-The gilded age”….
🤣🤣✌🏻
Ooh, that sounds like a wonderful hobby! Somehow relaxing.
Absolutely! And teaching me that patience truly is a virtue.😉🤣✌🏻
Never heard of water gilding, so thanks for teaching me something new today!
I spent this hot for the UK day in LL Thé Noir but now I’ve applied TF Fleur de Chine for the CP.
Swoon Aurora 😍
You’ve been smelling wonderful all day!
😃Thank you Lillyjo, FdC blooms in the heat with a very prominent note of plum, delicious.
That TF is a 🦄 perfume now.
I got it when it was released after reading Victoria’s glowing review.
Smart purchase!

For the past 25 years there’s been a tradition of marking the day the magnolia at the university blooms. It’s a bit like the Groundhog Day tradition. Last year the first bud was August 9. It’s been trending towards an earlier date , but it usually falls between the first and the twentieth. I will go and have a look today, just in case, though it’s usually reported in the paper. The tree was planted in 1965.
So cold here, but frosty again. Wearing Ambre Extreme.
Oh, that is a very pretty tree!
That’s a nicer tradition than the groundhog thing.
its still hot here, so i biked again to work. Scent was Pour la Belle from the decant stash, sadly a discontinued Chypre from a Stuttgart perfumery shop.
This year the biking is really going well, i put in 2000km this year already and hope to do at least 500km more before the end of the season.
Wow, very impressive biking tannina!
I think the weather will be improving today, we’ve had a long run of wet and cold weather, I’m thoroughly sick of it. Warming up with amber, Fort and Manle’s Amber Absolutely.
Send some over to the northeast U.S. We’re parched!
SOTD is No 5 L’eau. Always good a good choice.
No. 5 is always a good choice. 😀 You smell wonderful.
Yep!
👍 on No.5 L’Eau!
sotd = Vol de Nuit
From an STC sample labelled “vintage edt”
I love it! 🙂 VdN always makes me smile the way so many other lovely florals do. Still feeling Guerlain love today.
It’s been hot here in SoCal. Last night a baby possum dragged itself up on my front lawn. When I went out to look of course it played possum for a few minutes then started blinking at me.
He was panting pretty hard, so I went and got a little dish of water for him. Pretty soon he was up and drinking then scurried away.
If you live in a hot climate with neighborhood wildlife, please think about leaving fresh water out for the birds and furry critters who are feeling parched.
Stay cool a fragrant, perfumed peeps! 🙂
How lovely to interact with a baby possum.
This might be controversial, but I think baby possums are cute. Jealous that you got to see one up close. It was lucky to encounter a kind human.
Never seen a baby opossum, but the adults creep me out! Glad to hear that you were able to help the poor thing.
Inoui!
How is it? I looked it up and it sounds fabulous!
It’s a favorite since the 70’s! It’s a very well-blended green scent with no bite, very smooth and perfect for any season or occasion. Fabulous is right!
I had a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. Got a couple of tests that were firsts for me including a “step test” (aka a stress test) and an EKG. It was being offered thru Mr. Jalapeno’s employer at no cost, so heck yeah, I’m taking advantage. Going to be 3 or 4 weeks before I get results.
SOTD = Eau de Neroli Dore EdC, sprayed after the appt. I think I have maybe one more wearing in my sample, and then it will be thunked.
Hope you will get good results, it’s a long time to wait.
I see a bottle of EdND in your future
Thanks, Aurora. I will also be waiting for results from blood tests and a urine test. Hoping that there aren’t any unpleasant surprises for me! 🤞
Good for you! As to your perfume, I believe you can get a travel size of it although you may have to get a mix-and-match set of four.
There are very good deals for the 100mL bottle at a couple of online discounters. I may or may not have done some exploratory research on this topic… 🤓
Good luck with the results!
Thanks lillyjo! I am at the age where those tests are probably A Good Idea. I remember my parents not going to a doctor unless they were sick. I’m trying to not repeat that.
PSA: Assam of India on sale at FragranceX.

I may or may not have bought a bottle. 😃 My SOTD is Eau de Hospitalé 👎🏼
Not going to look … I have a bottle!
I have loved all of the pictures you’ve chosen this week, Robin. And oh, that teapot was to die for, my goodness! I’ve become confused, however, and doing some quick on-line research hasn’t much helped. There are a lot of species of magnolia, but one of the main differences is between the pink kind I was used to as a kid up north, which my. mother called “tulip trees,” and the huge trees down south here, including Texas, with giant shiny green lives and plate-sized white blossoms with a sort of big cone in the center. These latter ones are more profuse in Houston, and bloom much later than the pink ones–May rather than January. The question is, do they smell different? I associate magnolia smells in perfume with kind of sweetish floral scents, whereas actual big white magnolia blossoms have a sort of super-light soft lemony gardenia smell–divine. I have not found THIS magnolia scent in any perfume (yet).
Yesterday I wore Armani Mania, said to have a magnolia note, and it seems to me to have the pink magnolia sweet note. It’s too potent and was still on my t-shirt today. But my bottle is very very old.
And another question, is Grandiflora also a subtype of magnolia?
Irrelevant aside: in my small, 11-unit townhome association, we’ve nearly come to blows about a huge beautiful magnolia that sits near one home but provides shade and privacy to two others. Recently one neighbor became convinced it was sending roots under his foundation, and an arborist said yes and offered a bid to remove it. Another neighbor objected vehemently. Nasty views were exchanged on e-mail. Then one day the first neighbor just went out in a fit of pique and cut off a bunch of branches from the beautiful huge old tree. !! Another neighbor who happens to be the landscape architect for the Menil Museum got their tree expert to come over and look, and he said the magnolia is NOT threatening the first guy’s foundation. Now Neighbor #2 wants to fine Neighbor #1, the angry guy. Moral of the story: do not every buy into a property with an HOA because you will regret it!
I may not exactly know what magnolia smells like. I was surprised at one of the ones that supposedly has magnolia, but what do I know? 🤷🏻♀️
I live in a development that has an HOA. I agree if there are only a few dwellings, and 11 is quite small in my opinion, an HOA may do more harm than good. My development has a 140 units and when we did not have a management company, the board did not do a good job; it got much much better with a management company that was put in place 4-5 years ago. They are not perfect but I share my displeasure when warranted.
One problem is that in the past we DID have a management agency, but it came out eventually they were bilking us of a lot of money. Then we got some better residents who were good board members, but at present we have two obnoxious alpha males + me, and I refused to get drawn into The Great Magnolia Debate, with the result that the poor tree got kind of decimated in a fit of ridiculous male anger/power display. No offense to the always nice, not peacocking, male/non-binary members of our lovely NST community!
My HOA is a PITA! It’s a sizable community, with at least 2 dozen buildings. There have been at least 3 property management company changes that I know of. They used to send out newsletters to residents, but that practice stopped several years ago.
Yes, grandiflora is a subset or species of magnolia. But not all big white magnolias are grandifloras — there are several other kinds with those big flowers.
There are no pink grandifloras, but there are obviously pink magnolias, and I think more than one kind although most of them are that tulip shape so get called tulip trees.
But tulip-shaped magnolias can also be white 🙂
That exhausts my plant knowledge. I don’t personally think any of it matters for perfume…they do what they want aesthetically and if it smells like any magnolia at all, it’s a win.
Not sure but I’m guessing a HOA is similar to a strata council. You can’t avoid a strata council if you live in a strata here (any multi-unit property). I much prefer small stratas to large ones, I have to say. We’re 14 units in my small townhouse development, and we all get along; those of us who care help out and do a lot of work with decorating, cleaning, gardening, etc. Those of us who don’t, don’t. Before this I was in a strata with one unit occupied by drunk unemployed lawyers. It was always fun (well, not) when they turned up at AGMs, but fortunately they never wanted to be on council. I’ve heard horror stories about large stratas, though.
Property managers, however, are a totally different story. I haven’t met a competent property manager yet. I’ve only met some that ignore women on council and some that don’t. Our current one is reasonably priced, appears to listen to all of us, but then terrible on follow-through. That said, our alternative is to switch to one that’s expensive and terrible on follow-through. Sigh.
SOTD = Chanel Les Exclusifs Le Lion
So good!

I ended up WFH today which means I will be going into the office tomorrow. I may go sniffing at Saks …
In other news, when you’re looking for feedback and don’t let someone speak, I will call it out and say that person x seems to want to share something before we move on to the next topic. The info solicitor comes from a group that does a poor job of facilitating meetings and lets people derail meetings when discussions should have been nipped for later discussion.
That person is a poor group leader, then. Good for you to draw attention to the problem. I was a department chair for nine years and ALWAYS tried to be inclusive at department meetings, while also aiming at some kind of efficiency. Kind of dueling goals, but you’ve got to try. Many folks in academia, and I presume in business too, are poor at reading people’s body language and facial expression. Ugh!
If someone asks for feedback and then cuts people off when they give it, that can make people wonder if they are really being sincere when asking.
You smell fantastic!
2 and a half hours until my day off! Tomorrow I will go to the big mall to sniff the new Kayali perfume and will report back.
Today I am wearing my Magnolia Charm body spray for the cp. I am not sure what to pick for tomorrow.
W00t w00t for a day off! Hope that you have either a bit of fun, or some relaxation.
Not sure what I will wear perfume-wise for tomorrow, either.
Thanks, Robin, for pointing out there’s magnolia in Saturday…it wasn’t listed on any of the magnolia lists. So it’ll be my only magnolia perfume for tomorrow.
