It's Tuesday and Simplicity Day (Henry David Thoreau’s birthday). What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm commando at the moment because I'm hoping for an hour at the pool later this morning. If I had any, I'd be in Comme des Garçons Kyoto afterwards (it's been on my buy list for years), but instead I'll be in Ouarzazate, the one I did buy. Tea at the moment is Upton Dikom Estate Assam.
Reminder: 7/15 will be FBW Friday...wear a full-bottle-worthy perfume that you have not yet bought, but would like to. (This is probably a repeat.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the 19th century Wedgwood Tri-Color Teapot ("This charming Wedgwood teapot is crafted of tri-color jasperware, one of the firm’s rarest creations. The teapot’s classic form displays beautifully applied figures in lilac and sage bas relief in a neoclassical motif that was highly popular during the late Victorian era.") is $3,850 at 1stDibs.
I love jasper Wedgwood, those muted colours and especially that matte finish. I don’t know why I don’t own a small piece — it’s not expensive. Probably because I’d fondle it so much it would get discoloured.
Today I’m in Grès Cabochard, probably nineties, not super vintage but old enough to have a healthy slug of oakmoss. It’s one of those terrific chypres that really means business: it’s what you wear when you mean to square your shoulders and not take any guff from anyone.
Gres Cabochard does have that effect
You smell great!
I like jasperware too, this one is lovely.
I love Wedgewood too. No idea why. Not sure if you can access my Insta, but here’s a photo of my Wedgewood wedding cake, in all its electric green glory! https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf7ZjbaPUh9e7PtEbvBVC_B2B5zEV-dmv4s6o80/
I’m CP compliant in Trefle Pur, one of my favorite Atelier Colognes. I would like to own a bottle of this.
I’d like a bottle, too.
That was my mistake purchase that I fell in love with.
Sounds more like serendipity than a mistake!
“Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” Happy Birthday Thoreau
This morning I am listening to Philip Glass “Opening” the song repeating over and over while I eat breakfast. This one and Dance VIII are my two favorites from Glass.
I as going to make tea today but the kids already had my coffee machine on this morning when I woke up and insisted on making me a “double espresso latte cappuccino”
Yesterday when I popped into the pharmacy I saw they were carrying Nuxe again. I sprang for the bottle of Huile Prodigieuse. I have missed this line so much and it was harder to find here on the local pharmacies. They also had the matching fragrance, which I didn’t try but let me know if I should.
SOTD: TF Neroli Portofino for the CP
Would be happy with a FB of this one.
Oh, I worship at the shrine of Philip Glass! “Opening” was one of the first things I learned to play when I got a piano about ten years ago, and I still play it often: it’s so meditative. (It has three repeats but you could play it for an hour straight, no problem.) “Dance VIII” is also something I love to play, and “Helen’s Theme” from Candyman, and “Metamorphosis Two”, which I play on almost a daily basis — I’ll never be able to nail those arpeggios but I keep trying.
I figure if you have a bottle of Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, you probably don’t need the perfume: the oil is so richly scented that I often wear it as a fragrance all by itself.
Good to know about the perfume, the oil is so good. My routine is to put on a nice unscented lotion and apply the oil on top.
Since you mentioned Metamorphosis Two, I put it on.
Its funny that you say meditative because usually on Monday I do my “mindfulness Mondays” and before I start a meditation with my little group on zoom, I usually put on Glass to get myself in the headspace. Yesterday I didn’t have time so I felt I was missing something.
I had the privilege of hearing Glass play in Carnegie Hall many years ago…
Bravo for you playing the piano. My daughter is learning and just had her recital last month. She has a keyboard, that is the best we can do for NYC living. But she played on a grand piano for her performance. Chubby Buddha (who isn’t chubby anymore) is learning the violin.
So happy for you that the LTSG kids are interested in music! Our family did not care so much, but Mr. Mossy got so much happiness from playing his trumpet throughout high school and college.
Thank you for reminding me of Philip Glass. Just added to my playlist! My daughter also plays the piano and when she complains (not very often) I tell her it is for her sanity and that she will thank me later in life :). I tell my children that if we have music, books, ballet (or dance) and friends in life, then we are OK.
A good motto to teach at a young age
Your kids are adorable.
Coffee goes everywhere, but they have fun
😹
I should also mention the coffee never makes it to the table full 🙂
Enjoy it. It´s so much fun when the coffee doesn´t make it to the table full. My children are away this week with their grandparents. The house is so tidy and clean and Iam thinking: this is so boring, where is the noise and colour? But anyway, got 5 books from the library, meeting friends and listening to music.
You have fabulous children!
I’m in Smyrna by Le Couvent, Jean-Claude Ellena’s take on a velvety rose in a cloud of black pepper. Very nice work.
Very glad to hear it is nice work, I miss JCE.
I am wearing YSL Baby Doll and back at work after a long weekend at the cottage.
Even though I love cottage life, I really miss the city , happy to be back.
On another note I am trying some skincare I ordered from Dore, loving it so far. Simple three step skincare, made in France .
I love playing with new skincare even though I tend to just go back to my easy routine 🙂
You smell great today!
CP points in a good-sized (but not Hajusuuri-sized) sample of Ummagumma (thanks to a lovely NST perfumista). It’s definitely a cool weather favorite on my buy list and would not normally be my choice for a very warm day here in the PNW, but I still love it anyway.
I love LTSG’s Thoreau quote above – books are the wealth of the world. George Will recently had a very thought-provoking (whether you like him or not) post about the rise of screen time and lack of reading / books in younger folks. If you’re younger than I am, and most people are, please don’t be offended — I think we could all benefit from reading more books.
I would love to read that post if you don’t mind sharing the link.
I try when I can to take my kids to the library so they can pick out or request books and I always read a physical book, not a kindle or anything from my phone.
Also in the basement of our library we have a used book store. My oldest likes to browse and I let her pick what she likes and we buy to support our local branch.
Here’s the link. I don’t agree with all of it—for example, I wouldn’t call out only the millennials; it’s all of us— but it was interesting to think about the ways that books stretch us (and social media can shrink us)!
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/07/08/millennials-dumbest-generation/
I totally agree with you on reading more books. Even though I am 63 I can still get caught up in social media and too much screen time. I will admit that I started reading at an early age and have never quit. I bring a book with me everywhere I go in case I get somewhere that I may have to wait for a while.
I do the same with books. I even bring one camping. It calms me to know I’ll have something to do even if it’s pouring rain or I have a long wait at the doctor’s office.
That said, I’ve rarely read while camping. But that sounds relaxing!
I am wearing something from a random sample but I will apply something different later on, maybe Dryad from a sample.
Has anyone else watched the film Another Round? Very interesting, it makes you think about letting go, celebrating life and getting older. Brilliant.
Dryad is so beautiful.
I haven’t seen it, but I just watched the trailer. It looks very interesting!
I enjoyed it a lot as it passes from straight comedy to something deeper and more complex but I think I prefer his movie The Hunt, also with Mads Mikkelsen. But that is much darker.
I loved the scene in Another Round when the coach puts his hand on the ‘specs’ kid . It was so gentle and protective.
The Hunt is also excellent, you are right. My favorite scene in Another Round is when the children start singing. Also the dance part is amazing.
Love the dance
I liked the film though I guess I found it a little dark at times.
And I really liked the dancing by Mads Mikkelsen. Another good movie of his is After the Wedding. I have been to Denmark once and as I was watching the movie I was thinking how similar the hotel in the movie was to the one in which we stayed and then I realized it is the SAME hotel.
I wore LeLabo Musc 25 today.
I watched it earlier this year… loved it. It’s the first time I had seen MM in anything and I was really impressed with his acting plus the colour of his eyes, an olive/brown… just stunning!
I’m wearing Narciso white cube from the swap meet. It’s a partial bottle and I already fear running out, so I would love a full bottle. Also, my Hypnotic Poison bottle has just a few sprays left, I thunked another bottle of it. Has anyone smelled the newest version?
I sprayed HP the other day from a tester at Ulta. I think it smells pretty much the same. Perhaps lacking some depth ( but I am going by memory of having it when it came out) 2 sprays stayed with me for the rest of the day. From what I have heard White Cube is being discontinued. It’s gorgeous.
Oh no, that’s a shame about white cube.
White Cube discontinued?! Yikes, I better get a bigger bottle while they are still around!
How does white cube compare to white cube Poudree, anyone know? I have absolutely nowhere to smell perfume!
I’ve tried it and remember thinking it wasn’t very Poudre smelling. To me, there is something magical about White Cube that the flankers lacked.
Thanks for answering all my questions, lillyjo!
I had the oil version of the white cube Narciso. The gardenia note was ridiculously good. Notice I said “had”? It was borrowed and never returned. 😭
Oh dear, looking into another travel size of white cube right now…thanks for the heads up.
Ack now I need to find a bottle of white cube! Thanks for the update about HP, I put it on my Ulta wishlist.
Does this smell anything like the Narcisco Rodriquez for Her. I have never tried it, but sounds like it gets a lot of love here.
It’s totally different. Robin wrote an awesome review on it when it came out.
Thanks. I will go back and read that.
I wanted to wear Cuir Cannage, which has been on my FB list forever, but it’s just going to be too warm for that one today. Instead, I’m wearing SMN Eva, a favorite no matter the weather but especially good on a sultry day.
Oh, have the cutest manufacturer’s mini of Cuir Cannage–will have to find it and perhaps apply a couple of drops this evening. Too hot for it right now here too.
Do it! And I will too — we can be future twins. 🙂
SMN Eva is on *my* list 🙂
Smelling violet-y and iris-y in Guerlain Apres l’Ondee today 🙂
You smell fabulous! Has anyone tried the new release of Apres l’Ondee? I got the new release of Nahama, but it was a hard choice between the two!
I just ordered a bottle based on all the positive comments on Basenotes.
Do let us know what you think😸
2nd!
Thirding!
Yes, do report back! I recently watched a video on Youtube by Persolaise, where he tries a few of the new releases – Nahema, Apres l’Ondee, and Liu. He reviewed them quite positively.
oh! that’s good news. 🙂 I adore Apres l’Ondee and hope to try the new Liu and Nahema, too.
I thought: oh, today’s tea pot is exceptionally pretty – huh, guess I was right, LOL! Sotd Kenzo Flower. I am a vintage-chypre-kinda-gal, but Flower is, for some unknown reason, a top 20 for me. I sometimes look at my perfume collection in terms of “contemporary” and “classic” scents. Classic means something along the lines of what would have scented the temples at Luxor; contemporary means…hmm…Flower??
1st Dibs is not the cheapest way to buy old things…would not surprise me if you could find that teapot at a much smaller price!
Ah-so! 🤔
That teapot is gorgeous. The price nearly knocked me off the couch!
My SOTD is the always glorious California Reverie. Perfect choice for a hot day spent inside relaxing with the dog.
See my comment just above 🙂
Relaxing with the dog sounds perfect!
Hey all! I’m so relieved to have a day off today. I worked overtime last week and am doing so again this week, and I was exhausted yesterday. You know those days when it’s non-stop interruptions and urgent questions and you wish you had an office where you could spend at least an hour with the door closed so you could concentrate? It’s been like that for a while.
Today I’m sampling Teo Cabanel Je Ne Sais Quoi. My initial impressions were, “huh, kinda gourmand, kinda salty, kinda smoky, but what is that exactly?” Turns out it’s based on genmaicha tea! I like it but it’s already going a little faint on me. We’ll see.
Hope things improve soon. It’s hard to work at that level of stress for long.
Thank you!
Hope you catch a break at work soon!
Thank you! Me too.
Here’s hoping for a break in work pressures!! 🤗. Oh, and kinda gourmand, kinda salty, kinda smokey, sound intriguing! I’ve not tried anything from TC yet. Hang tough, Socks!
Thanks Mossy! I like TC, they’re (comparatively) reasonably priced and interesting. I can send you the remainder of my samples if you like!
Thanks, Socks, I am interested. And maybe we can do a swap. I’m still at kclberry in the land of nets cape dotty net. ✨
Enjoy the day! Hope you decompress for a little, at least.
Interesting choice of fumes!
Thank you!
Do you have giant headphones you can wear to make people think you’re in a meeting?
I do–good idea!
🤣🤣
Sorry to hear that work has been so frantic for you lately. Hope you get a break soon!
Thank you! I took a little nap this afternoon, which helped.
Sorry to hear it’s been so hectic at work lately. I hope today’s breather revitalizes you!
Thank you! Yes, it did help :).
Lovely teapot. I’m sipping on iced blueberry white tea. Made some strawberry sauce and rhubarb sour cream cupcakes (Martha Stewart recipe) to go with it.
Sotd is CP compliant, Hermes Osmanthe yunnan… definitely FBW in my books. Only have the small travel size.
I have the travel size as well — I wouldn’t say no if a full bottle fell in my lap!
Mmm, those cupcakes sound delicious, and the strawberry sauce!
Really yummy and easy to make. One of our favorite ways to use rhubarb beyond pie.
Wearing Robin’s Kyoto this morning. I have a bottle and find this CP hard as I don’t have samples of any of my FB cravings.
I saw a wonderful 1960s Spanish coffee pot in the thrift shop yesterday. I really loved it but it was $30 and I thought to myself, that’s far too expensive. Now, having seen today’s teapot, I am kicking myself for letting such a bargain go. I might nip back after getting my 2nd Covid booster. Strange virus. Two family/ household members have been positive these past ten days and I have stayed negative even though I am the least ‘ healthy’. We were very careful though. Torrential rain for the past two days, lots of flooding and it may turn to snow later as the wind turns to the south. I love the way street lights and car lights blur in the rain, how you see these bright streaks against the grey and black.
Strange virus indeed. Glad you’ve avoided it!
Glad you’re able to avoid it!
Here’s how NYC treats it:
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/12/nyregion/ba5-variant-omicron-covid-nyc.html
I think it’s probably similar here. We still mask in retail and transport but not in schools . Some people are still very cautious ( me ) but some are over it, and probably don’t do the full 7 days isolation. Our hospital cases are surging, and it’s mid-winter of course. Second boosters ( free) are for the over-50s and vulnerable who are being hardest hit this round. Before it was the younger people.
thank you for the link! It’s good to read what’s happening along with the experts recommendations.
Fingers crossed you stay negative, Kanuka!
I’m in Dear Polly.
After yesterday’s overcast skies, today we have a bluebird of a day. Not a cloud to be seen.🌞
My daughter is going to a movie this afternoon and my son is house/dog sitting, so this afternoon when I get home I will have a rare afternoon with the house to myself. I plan to enjoy the silence.☺️
I ended up with your overcast skies this afternoon. ☔
Oh no! Sorry, Jalapeno, but that means blue skies tomorrow!🌞😎
(shrug). It’s summer. I fully expect the 3pm thunderstorm to show up on a semi-regular basis. ⚡🌦🌧
On the plus side, the sky is now full of the most incredible golden clouds with the sun setting.
Nice!
Still lying low, will try a sample of the new Francesca Bianchi Libertine Neroli.
I hope you get better soon! Do let us know what you think of the FB!
Hopefully tomorrow will be better! Are you watching the Tour de France? Nice countryside.
No, too listless to watch TV, just following the results on Cycling news website.
Sending more healing thoughts your way.
Thank you, I’m getting very bored sitting in the house feeling crappy. Hoping I can kick it to the curb soon.
Sotd is CdG Avignon (house twins with Robin and Kanuka), a FB I just bought for my birthday. I’m loving incense fragrances lately and this is a good one.
You made a great choice!
🙂
I think I missed your birthday.
Happy Birthday!!!
You’re so sweet – thank you!
Happy Belated Birthday!
Thank you Jalapeno!
I love Avignon, it has a fizzy lemon-lime top note that makes me smile every time. 🙂
I really appreciate you mentioning the fizzy note – I can totally smell it now 🙂
Slept late today, but it’s good for my immune system so I’m not feeling guilty at all! Wearing multiple sprays Shalimar MVP today and smelling fine! It’s fine in the heat, where as the regular Shalimar would probably kill me.
Here’s the latest info on the newest strain of Covid and some immune system boosting ideas. Stay well and keep smelling fabulous!
https://youtu.be/fcaJsygMdfs
Thanks for the info. I’ m keeping it playing so I fully grasp it.
Hope you enjoy your day!
Thanks for the link Deva!
good info! thank you for the link.
Went commando today; was hoping to try some South African perfumes but the clothing store I went to that was supposedly a stockist for one of the companies did not have any perfume. Ockeghem Tween got a nice sweater there, though. 🙂 Trying other stores tomorrow…
Are you in South Africa now?
Yes, for the next few days.
I’m wearing an old standby, Jacomo Art Collection No. 08. It never disappoints. Apparently, one of my favorite things is to smell like chai.
Say Chai?
I’m very glad that my sense of smell seems to be returning after a few days, it’s not quite full strength, but neither is the rest of me. A lot of people have commented that Covid leaves them very tired, and that’s certainly my experience. I’ve been working half days so far this week, and have barely left the house.
The weather has cleared after a couple of days of rain, so that perks me up a bit. I haven’t quite landed on this morning’s perfume, I think I might have a drop left of Camel, and that is on my list of possible FBs.
Take good care and rest all you can. 😀
My daughter still looks wilted to me on day 12 of covid. Her doctor cleared her to go back to work and school, and she wants to, but I wish she would take time to rest more.
My sister tested negative after 11 or 12 days, finally, but is still tired several weeks later. Luckily, the heart palpitations she had around days 15-16 or so did not last more than a few days.
I’m off to shower and have a few samples from luckyscent and ministry of scent to test. I keep reaching for Pacific Oak Moss.
For those who have lost someone in their lives, I heard such a beautiful song yesterday. It is meant for a mother, but I think the chorus and almost everything is worth relating to.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tijJ9rGxkBI
“Remember Me Beautiful” by Brandy Clark
Be well!
Pacific Rock Moss maybe? The notes sound great and seems like it could make a good summer scent!
Yay for getting a soothing shower in! (At least, I hope it was soothing.)
Dunno what is up with me, but I have heard a few songs lately that had me bawling. The most recent was “The Rose” by Bette Midler. Boy did that one turn on the waterworks.
sotd = Brin de Reglisse
Today it reminds me of those salty black licorice candies I see at the Dutch food store. Yummy.
Yes! to simplicity day. The simpler the better. Simple things are a gift.
My daughter is reading some of Thoreau’s work for a literature class. She said she finds that poetry “makes her brain tired.” Made me LOL.
Hope your day has some laughs, too, dear NSTers! 🙂
Well, your daughter and I may be twins separated by several decades 😵💫. Not all poems make my brain tired but more do than don’t.
heh heh, poetry can be a bit much. 🙂
I don’t mind poetry, but the dissection of, and discussion about poems sure was tedious to my college-aged brain eons ago.
agree! My daughter and I have wished she were reading these poems for enjoyment rather than dissection. 😉
It’s like taking apart a music box to figure out how it works.
Gorgeous teapot today Robin! With that price tag, though, I will be more than content to look at a picture of it. 🥴
MossyBerry’s post yesterday inspired me to do a load of out-of-season laundry today. One more to go, and then the blankets will be safely in a bin in the basement. Yay!
SOTD = Wrappings. Yep, I am on another week’s wearing of a favorite scent. But I do have a few samples that would work all too well for this week’s CP.
Woo hoo! I layer my clothes so anything I haven’t worn in a while may get the chop. As to seasonal stuff, I don’t switch them out.
It’s just too darn warm for blankets on the bed now. Especially those Vellux ones. 🥵🔥
I get so nervous washing heavy blankets. I’m always afraid I will break the washing machine. It doesn’t stop me though. Lol.
My blankets aren’t all that heavy, just bulky. Much prefer washing them in a front loading machine as opposed to a top loader. Easier to get them in and out.
This made me smile — my family is in the laundry business and for a variety of reasons I’m not a fan of front-loading washing machines, but I do admit that I have to stand on tippy-toes and expend effort to get some items out of my top-loader. Sometimes it’s more exercise than I really want. 😆
Oh that Bates bed spread…but yay for getting ahead on seasonal laundry!
Happily, looking at the picture was enough for me too 🙂
SOTD = YSL Tuxedo
… from a split decant. It’s pictured in my IG stories as my SOTD. Not so sure if this is still a available and it is a good one: violet, patchouli, pepper and vanilla. Of course my nose could be broken but then I love what I smell.
In other news, I succumbed to a Prime Deal. I bought an air purifier and it is supposed to be delivered to my nearest Whole Foods by Thursday. We’ll see!
AnniePerfumes asked what Harmonist Royal Earth smelled like:
powdery iris violet sandalwood. It is most excellent!
Tuxedo does smell great!
I’m still holding out on any Prime purchases, although I’m tempted to get another air purifier. Wildfires have become all too regular around California. 🙁
I didn’t see anything irresistible on Amazon today. Thank goodness!
Ha! I was searching air purifiers earlier. I bought one over the winter but I don’t care for it.
I bought a couple from Ikea and love them, but doubt they are as efficient as some of the more expensive brands.
[accidentally posted this on yesterday’s SOTD post; reposting here]
I got my Wright No. 100 in the mail today and immediately put it on! For those of you who don’t remember it, see here: https://nstperfume.com/2022/06/24/wright-no-100-new-fragrance/ I ordered it because I was really excited about a bacon fragrance…though I don’t really smell much (any?) bacon. It mostly smells like a warm leather oriental. Nice dose of vanilla and patchouli. The first couple minutes of it are pretty masculine (nice hit of bergamot), but then the citrus disappears and all the warm notes rush in. It reminds me a bit of MFK Cologne pour le soir, actually.
Anyway, since I don’t get any bacon from it, I really don’t need this bottle. **Freebie alert** Would anyone like to try this? The bottle is actually quite nice, wooden cap and a velvety matte finish to the bottle itself. CONUS only.
OK, I’ll bite if no one else has claimed it 🥓 🤣
It’s yours 🙂
Well drat!! Bacon *can* be done in perfume, so that’s really disappointing.
SOTD is Rose de Jamal. I would not object to a full bottle of this!
I’ve been sampling Les Indemodables over the past few weeks, and there are quite a few good ones. I might be wearing more of them this week for CP.
I have not smelled it but from the sound of it, I would not object to a bottle either 🙂
It’s late here but I have trouble sleeping for some reason. I wore the simple and discreet Yardley Lavender for a visit to the dentist and hygienist and tonight I am in VC&A Rose Rouge which indeed smells distinctly of rose I must say.
How did your dentist appointment go? Nothing serious?
Thank you very much, just a slightly chipped tooth, so not too bad.
Hope you are sleeping now.
Thank you Lillyjo, that was a short night, but I will likely sleep better tonight.
I put on some Chanel Gardenia this morning but I sweated it off some time ago. This evening I’m wearing Kilian Woman in Gold and kicking back with a pina colada.
Love the perfume & beverage combo!
Between work and home everything seems to be in disarray lately. I’m just very overwhelmed. I certainly can not complain about the weather though. It has just been perfect.
I’m back in TF Eau de Soliel Blanc from my travel spray. I think it’s fbw but only at the right price.
Hang in there lillyjo. The disarray will pass. I went thru a similar spot not too long ago.
Thanks Jalapeno. I know it will pass.
I’ve been meaning to tell you… fragrance net has a jar of Angel body powder in. I’ve been so tempted! As far as I know it’s been long discontinued.
Now that IS a temptation for a perfumista!
Those TFs are so expensive! I’ve avoided trying many of them because I don’t want to fall for them.
Every now and then Sephora will put a TF perfume in one if their Sephora Favorites sample kits. These kits will give you a redeemable certificate for a fb of anything in the sampler. It’s a great deal when they include the too expensive brands. That’s how I got my travel spray for only 25 dollars!
Oh that’s good to know! Thank you!
