Thursday scent of the day 6/23

Posted by Robin on 23 June 2022 110 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, Let It Go Day and United Nations Public Service Day. Birthdays: Alan Turing, June Carter Cash, Frances McDormand. What fragrance are you wearing?

Unless our flight is cancelled again, it's going to be a travel day for me — we are off to Montreal for our belated anniversary trip. I'll be gone until Monday; posting will be sparse until Tuesday. And, I'll be mostly commando because we are traveling light. At the moment, though, I'm in a little spritz of Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles.

Reminder: on 6/24 we'll celebrate Midsummer 2022. (The solstice is on the 21st, but traditional Midsummer, in some countries, anyway, will be celebrated on the 24th.) Wear what you'd wear to dance around a Maypole or light a bonfire on the beach, or whatever you think fits.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I hope the travel goes well and that you enjoy Montreal, Robin!

I’m doing Arctic Jade for the CP as today’s scent. I thought of Agonist because I associate midsummer festivals with Scandinavia. For whatever reason. This is a difficult and controversial perfume. I just put it on and the opening is quite pungent. A real mix but I’m definitely picking out the orange, cranberry, and ylang ylang. I like it. The “Arctic” doesn’t really get expressed as coolness here but as something perhaps icy and distinctive. I only have had it on for 10 minutes and might report back later on how it evolves. Not many people mention Agonist on here, I’m not sure why. Does everyone dislike it? I like their distinctive aesthetic, but their Isis is by far my favorite.

I was hoping to get my arm cast off yesterday but didn’t. X-rays (through the cast) showed my wrist is healing well but the doctor wants me to keep the cast for another two weeks. Ugh. The good news is, I won’t need surgery. Last week he said I might because it was looking crooked.

We’re forecast to hit 102 today! I’m lucky I don’t have to go out at all.

Good news you are healing and won’t be needing surgery!
Last week my mum went to the doctors to examine her broken foot and the doctor said it’s healing but needed more time in the cast also.
I think the estimated heal time by doctors are shorter than reality. So many factors come into play. 🤷‍♀️

So glad you don’t need surgery! I don’t ever want another orthopedic surgery. Glad you can stay in, too. Houston is so miserable in crazy high temps.

I am glad you don’t need more surgery but wearing a cast in summer heat, and all that pfaffing around with showering etc. Ugh. Poor you. I haven’t ever seen Agonist perfume so am no help there. In case you are looking for more tv / police shows :

Excellent news in that you won’t need surgery! Sending you more healing vibes.

I broke an ankle as a kid and had to have the cast on longer than the initial estimate, too. It was a summer bummer!

Safe travels and enjoy your time in Montreal Robin!
Its been almost 3 years since I last flew! I miss flying, even the horrible in-flight meals and tiny seat space.

Our flight got canceled again, this time after spending the whole afternoon in the airport as it got delayed over & over…I think it will be awhile before we fly again!

We went home, redid our suitcases and drove to the beach :-)

Montréal is lovely. I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Finally saw the Coen Macbeth. Visually astonishing, and Frances McDormand is positively terrifying as Lady Macbeth: there’s no depth she won’t sink to in her lust for power.

Wearing Todd Oldham today, just the cheeriest oriental scent in know of. It always puts me in a good mood.

Too hot here for perfume but will try Alaia as someone mentioned it yesterday. For now, just the Rosemary and Sage soap from Loccitane. Quite nice.

Robin, you smell absolutely lovely. I’m in Eau d’Hadrien, a favorite for summer weather. Our area is supposed to really heat up starting tomorrow and through the weekend, so I plan to get some gardening done today while it’s relatively cool-ish. I have a couple of good-sized decants from the 4711 series and might put them in the fridge for the next few days.

Since official summer arrived in concert with official summer weather, I’m in AG Le Chevrefeuille today, to my mind (and nose) the most perfect summer scent of all.

I did the traditional Swedish thing of putting seven different kinds of flowers under my pillow on the night of the solstice, in order to dream of my future spouse, but I guess I’ll need to re-do this for the 24th! Since some of said flowers are things like black sage and coyote mint, my bed has been smelling wonderful…

Robin, I’m crossing my fingers for your flight.

I’m wearing the remnants of my bedtime fragrance, Amouage’s Ashore. It’s a pretty floral but this base is especially nice.

Anyone else see the news about the newest Malle, Uncut Gem? If it was online already I’d be in trouble.

I think it’s a 4711 Acqua Colonia White Peach and Coriander day for me. No lasting power or projection, but a very nice summery scent. Perfect weather here. Hope it holds during my day off tomorrow.

Disappointed in Amazon. I ordered a bottle of Eau d’Ete on June 12, and they seem to be still looking for it in a warehouse. I called and got nowhere. The seller, who relies on Amazon for shipping, should not be happy but there’s no way to contact them. Maybe I’ll write a comment that lets them know.

I’m in Ex Nihilo French Affair this morning. I’m kind of proud of myself: after I sprayed it on, I wondered if it was a chypre. Checked fragrantica and sure enough, it’s described as a chypre. I guess I’m trainable! 😂

Waiting on the pest control guy to arrive. He was supposed to be here earlier. I need to get to the grocery store and could have gone and been back by now, before the heat got too bad. Ah well, I have plenty to keep me busy here.

Enjoying whiffs from my SotD Jill Sander No. 4, current version, as I stay indoors for laundry and other dull household chores. It’s been hot and humid here, and though I’ve acclimated, I’m feeling “entitled” to a day inside! I’m s-l-o-w-l-y beginning to appreciate freshness in perfumes. Some samples from NST friends, and several weeks of outside work gave me insight! I think I have my CP choice for tomorrow. But, Jill Sander might work for the evening’s bonfire after the Maypole Dance!

It’s difficult to read the expression on a duck’s face but yesterday I watched all the ducks standing on the warmish, dark coloured , dry asphalt beside the frozen duck pond “scowling” as a bunch of toddlers excitedly threw all their scraps of bread and grain onto the thick ice surface. The day had started at minus 9 and despite the bright sun it was still freezing for my park bench catch up with my friend. I was surprised to see a lot of lavender in flower, along with rosemary, heathers, hebes, one sad rose, and a red flowering rhododendron. Today is a public holiday for Matariki and I’m wearing Silky Woods, sitting in bed and glad I’m not a duck.

Bought a bunch of samples to hopefully find something to update my collection. Test spritzed everything on paper. I’m mostly impressed with the by rosie jane line up (happy with 4, on the fence with 1, and 2 are scrubbers for me), but floral street discovery pack is predominantly a miss. :(
That said, SotD is by rosie jane Leila Lou – definitely a dance around the may pole kind of scent. :)

Took a quick walk around the yard and noticed that my overplanted frontdoor flower garden should have a bunch of zinnias blooming soon as the flowers are starting to form. I hope it’s an explosion of color in pinks, oranges, purples and yellows!

Zinnias are such happy flowers! I love them.

Lovely scent choice today. You reminded me to find my little decant of Paris-Riviera. Must use it up this summer. 🌞

A work-friend introduced me to zinnias; I probably would have overlooked them in the garden centre. They are so fun (and a reliable bloomer).

I also have and love Paris-Riviera. Hope you find your decant!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, maybe I should see if there are any zinnias around at the home improvement/hardware stores in my area this weekend.

I hope you find some! I started mine from seeds, just threw them in the soil; no babying plants here anymore!

I guess seeds are also an option, but I figured that I might be pushing my luck at this time of year. Time to get off my tuchus and just do something!

Yeah, I was just looking for another option when we were in the middle of the ‘ick’ wanting to avoid going to the garden centre. Now I’m so happy with seeds that I haven’t gone to the garden centre for a few years now.

I hope you can find some plants ready to bloom their heads off!

    Happy Anniversary Trip, Robin!

In Portrait of a Lady and pretending it’s Portrait of a Lady Dancing Around a Maypole.

    Perfume question:

Has anyone heard of Bohdidharma, a Black Lapsung Pure Tea Extrait or other fragrances from this brand/perfumer?

I was given this by a very generous NSTer in a swap and since it had been given to her by someone else (who doesn’t have more about the brand/perfumer), I thought I would reach out to you all.

I am really enjoying smoky/incense fragrances these days and would love to try others from this perfumer.

Internet searching tells me that the fragrance was made by Michael Boadi who, according to his Instagram, is a “Session Hairstylist and Master Perfumer”. Fragrantica lists 14 perfumes attributed to him but I can’t find any of these fragrances online.

Any help is much appreciated (and could also be used against you as enabling :) )

    sotd = Tauer Zeta

From a sample, Zeta makes me feel very grown up and put together, a perfect foil for the tank top and shorts I’m sporting today.

Zeta smells very woody and less flowery this wearing. I like it a lot. Makes me think Vol de Nuit and Beige got mixed up in a pleasant way.

I’m faffing about in the house while I should be out in the garden. There are lilies to deadhead and fading nasturtiums to be pulled up.

    Time 👏 to 👏 get 👏 moving!

Have a thankful Thursday, NSTers. You smell fabulous. 🤩

Faffing about twins today! I didn’t want to do anything while it was raining.

But I did do a load of dishes in the dishwasher later on.

go, Jalapeno! Let’s faff our hearts out. :D

I was feeling inertia due to the blazing sun in the sky, but I got out there anyway. Coincidentally, I’m going to attack the pile of dishes in my kitchen sink …. sometime …. soon.

Hoping that you are well on your way now Robin! Safe travels!

Heavy rain and cool-ish weather earlier today. But the sun broke thru late this afternoon and now it is way too muggy out for my liking!

SOTD = Smell Bent Prairie Nymph EdT, from the Sample Stash. This is quite possibly the skankiest perfume I have ever tried. And that is counting vintage Femme and Scheherazade! One spritz is plenty! 😲

No beeswax that I can detect in this one. There is a nuclear-strength honey note in this on my skin. It’s ginormous!

Oh, interesting! Nuclear honey sounds like it could be a good name for a band. Not sure about it on my skin though.

Prairie Nymph was no bueno on me. Skanky with something more nefarious was my unfortunate experience.

The honey has totally drowned out the carnations on me. And yeah, I’m getting a hint of something unnerving with this one.

So here’s something…. a coworker showed me a video taken of her barely toddling child at a family friendly restaurant. The kid was sitting (diapered) on the table and eating. Then another of the child standing ( with shoes) on the table and eating. I was thinking what on earth?! Where is the high chair? I didn’t say that though. Is this normal now? And I hope the restaurant uses actual sanitizer and not just a table rag. ( hajusuuri, I would love to hear your thoughts!)
My sotd is Fleur de Chine. Inspired by J B to thunk a decant by the end of the month.

Midsummer scent: I immediately thought of Feerie, but must find it in my stash first! Robin, I’m SO sorry your flight got canceled again. I hope you have a wonderful time at the beach instead! I feel lucky that the flights we took in May went off without a hitch; also glad that the rest of our summer travels are by car (and I drive a hybrid, so gas prices have less impact).

Speaking of summer scents, and Robin’s choice of Hermes, it’s time for me to move my Jardins to the front of the shelf! I love those in warm weather.
