Friday scent of the day 5/6

Posted by Robin on 6 May 2022 228 Comments

Happy Friday, and happy National Nurses Day and International No Diet Day! Birthdays: Sigmund Freud, Willie Mays, George Clooney. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Cartier, if you have one.

What fragrance(s) did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I suspect I will not be the only one in Cartier Baiser Volé.

Reminder: on 5/13, there will be a community project, and I'll announce the theme on Monday. (sorry! always behind!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is a 1924 Cartier nécessaire / vanity case in gold, platinum, mother of pearl, turquoise, emeralds and enamel. The piece is included in the exhibit Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity, which was at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and will run at the Dallas Museum of Art from May 14 through September 18.

I’m in my favorite Cartier, L’Envol. I pulled Carat, and Zeste de Soleil, but I almost always choose L’Envol.

I’m wearing my only Cartier, a mini of Le Baiser du Dragon. I’d forgotten how much I like this with all it’s almondy goodness.
It was hard to stick to the CP with new swap perfumes floating around!

I somehow forgot that I have a bottle of Le Baiser du Dragon tucked away somewhere (there are still untouched boxes from the move), but today I’m in vintage Panthère parfum, a floral oriental with a *lot* of mentholated tuberose. It’s very languid and opulent, very late-eighties aspirational. (And here I am doing housework in it. Those boxes aren’t going to unpack themselves.)

I got nuthin over here — not a Cartier scent in sight. I used to have a bottle of Baiser Vole, but I swapped it away a few years ago. I’m smelling vaguely like a barn anyway, so any scent added at this point would probably be ineffective. The five little feline fur balls are currently sleeping like logs, thank goodness. Been up since 5 am, when they started getting a little hungry and restless. I suppose I should be thankful that they allow me to sleep that long. Despite all of the poop-scooping, feeding every three hours, being completely covered in micro-scratches, and feeling a little overwhelmed, all is well. Turtle, Easy-Peasy, Billy Idol, Laser Beam and Braveheart all say hi!

Your updates have been making me long for a kitten. More than once this week I’ve looked over at my 17-year-old chocolate tortie and thought about how she used to be so tiny that she fit in my hand!

There’s a tortoiseshell one over here, temporarily named Turtle. She wants to be a mountaineer when she grows up, given the way she tries to scale every vertical surface in the bedroom!

I’m the opposite to Vee. Love reading about the kitties, but definitely am not tempted to get one. 🙂 There’s a reason the last few cats we’ve adopted have been about a year old. But thank you for fostering them and getting them ready for forever homes!

This is why I’ve decided to foster, instead of adopt. I’ve had cats (and dogs) my entire life, but after Otto Mi Gato died last year, I just couldn’t face taking on another long-term commitment right now. So instead, I’m just going to be crazy busy, for a shorter amount of time.

The joint is jumping, but it’s just as much fun as it is work.

Living for your kitty-kat updates! How old are they now? I really hope that they soon need feeding less often so you can get some well deserved sleep. Now that you’ve named them all, does it mean you’re keeping them all? 😻

I think they are about 4 weeks old. Their eyes are still blue, but they can eat wet food and use the litter box (providing me with many moments of gratitude, though I am scooping multiple times a day).

I expect there will be a load of crying on my part when I take them back to the shelter for adoption. I’ve decided to foster instead of adopting, but you know it’s going to be difficult to give them up…

Wow, I can’t imagine doing that for 5 😻😻😻😻😻little ones! I found my last kitty in my back yard when she was 3 weeks old and went through all that stuff with her. It was exhausting with just 1! You are a saint!

Laila, you’re right — it’s exhausting! They’ve got me hopping from one task to another, when they’re not climbing up my pants leg……

But, when they fall fast asleep — two curled up on my lap, one cradled between my shins, and the other two pressed up against my hip — it’s pretty happy-making.

FIVE little furballs?!?! I missed this! How wonderful! I’ve never fostered because I’m fairly sure I’d foster fail and end up with five permanent kittens…but also, that is a lot of work. So glad you’re doing this 🙂

Happy Friday. I noticed that my rhubarb is starting to come up (turned an old canoe into a planter for rhubarb and strawberries) so it will be pie and cake season soon. Sipping on tealish Queen West blend – a berry infused black tea.

The kevlar and wood veneer canoe had multiple long cracks and missing bits running the length of it when we found it on the property. We didn’t think it feasible to repair and didn’t want to throw it out so my brain went directly to let’s make it a planter, lol.

I don’t have any Cartier, nor do I think I’ve even tried any of their fragrances so I am a complete fail for this cp.
Instead I’m in Samsara. This is my favorite auntie’s scent and today is her birthday so I’m wearing it in her honor. From a bottle she gifted me.☺️

I thought about the promo, but since my shipping address is in CA, I have to pay 8% sales tax, so the discount is only 7%, much less tempting.

Twin! And that bottle is spectacular. I had a mini back in the eighties and when I stumbled across a quarter ounce of the parfum about a decade ago, I snapped it up, of course. Even the box is gorgeous: you can tell it’s from a jeweller.

Beach sounds super nice..in the driest of deserts here..not a drop really unless it’s monsoon season. Usually a flash flood, then poof, all over. But amazing to watch a monsoon storm pass through. Quite powerful at times, many lightning strikes, dramatic scenes..beautiful. The last time I saw one, I was just in awe. Last time I was at a beach was San Clemente like a year ago..lovely jasmine flowers were about and had to sniff all I could lol.

I’m debating signing up for Netflix streaming. I believe the first tier, which is all I will ever need as long as there is no restriction as to which shows one can watch, is $9.99 (+ tax) per month. I want to binge watch the Old Enough shows (Japanese toddlers assigned to perform tasks, mostly shopping), the Great British Bake-off and Hoarders (I want to be horrified), among others. I will have to set limits because life. Does anyone have the most basic streaming subscription? Is it worth it considering that it has a lower bandwidth and may quality issues?

I buy a Netflix gift card for 20 dollars every couple of months. So I can stop and start it whenever I want. I like Netflix and use it to watch comedy specials. I have not had any problems.

It takes the whole 20 and gives me how ever much time is worth that much.. generally 6 or 8 weeks I think. Then when the time is used up I can either buy another gift card or not. This way I don’t have money taken out every month for service.

I just recently signed up but forgot what I’m paying. I think I’m basic, too. I’ve been binging on 2-3 episodes of Seinfeld almost every night. I’m planning on watching every season, for as long as that takes. I just can’t get enough of George! I just love his character so much.🥰 I have branched out a bit by watching movies (or partially watching certain movies, specifically Power of the Dog), British bake-off, and schitts creek, which I can only take in small doses. I’m just not used to watching a lot of tv. I think the basic subscription is definitely worth it, and when you get tired of it, just cancel. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I spent about three hours in hospital yesterday and all the nurses were great. They are striking for better pay and conditions over the next two weeks and I wish them well. Many of the younger nurses I have spoken with over the past year want to move to Australia where the pay is so much better. The older, experienced nurses talk about leaving nursing all the time. I treated myself to a walk home from town via the Botanic gardens and was amazed by the number of camellias already in bloom. A beautiful display of fluttery white flowers ( not sure what variety but very loose, open flowers) on one tree, and then pinks. Also cyclamens in flower on the sunny hillside. A beautiful day again as I chugged up the hill quite slowly. Feel so lucky to be able to spend time loitering in nature. No Cartier perfumes but I am wearing Jicky which has a classic elegant Cartier-like vibe if that counts.

I do hope you’re ok. How strange, here camellias bloom in the spring, not the fall. They are beautiful flowers but always disappoint me because they lack scent. I consider them pretenders. And here, cyclamen are often planted in masses in gardens in the winter. The red and white ones are popular around Christmastime.

Just in case you’re still awake. I always thought all camellias were spring blooming so was equally surprised that there were autumn and winter ones. The ones I saw were less densely packed than the “Chanel” type camellia. They were more like mini magnolias

My camellias are blooming here too.

I really don’t understand the poor pay and working conditions for nurses and other essential workers. The people who are most important for the things that really matter to our daily lives seem to be the most poorly paid – teachers, nurses, food workers, etc. This was quite obvious during the pandemic. Meanwhile we have grossly overpaid administrators, government officials, entertainers, athletes and CEOs. Of course many of these low-paid jobs are held by women. This needs to change, but after the events of this week in the US Supreme Court, I have little hope.

I spent years wearing Declaration, although I’ve recently lost interest in it. I’ll spray it on and be charmed for a few seconds, then wish I was wearing something else. Strange when that happens, huh? That was also my only Cartier, although I’m pretty sure I have a mini of L’Envol kicking around somewhere (not even with a gun to my head could I tell you exactly where).

The closest I can come to participating is by wearing Eau d’Hermès, which was Declaration’s main inspiration anyway, and in some ways is a bit of an upgrade. The spices aren’t as demure (yes, I consider Declaration demure, call me crazy), the citrus is juicier, and the leather is richer.

Robin, I hope your son is feeling better and you and Mr. Robin can avoid getting this. The same day of your post Mr. Laila also tested positive for Covid after a couple of days of mild symptoms. Thus far, I have no symptoms and am trying to follow the CDC and DPH/IL guidelines for someone who was in close contact. Supposedly, as long as I’m negative I can go about my business masked but need to test periodically. Yesterday I picked up a library book and a few grocery items but am erring on the side of caution and not planning on going anywhere for now, masks notwithstanding. Very frustrating, as we have played by all the rules and have only begun to venture out a bit (still masked) but still avoiding crowds and many activities we used to enjoy. I was really looking forward to this weekend – seeing both of my grandtwins in a rare local rowing event, my favorite volunteer activity (our library’s book sale), and a special concert to benefit Ukraine from my favorite cellist. All scratched for now. 🤬

For today’s cp, I’m wearing an old favorite, Le Baiser du Dragon, although I certainly don’t feel like kissing anyone today nor much like a fiery dragon, more like a sleepy dragon seeking peace. Our weather continues to be absolutely abysmal, cold and rainy ad infinitum, which mirrors a number of sad and disappointing events this week, including my beloved yoga teacher – the one who often gently reminds us to be grateful not only for what we have but for what we’ve escaped – losing her daughter to metatastic breast cancer. What cruel karma trick is that?

Sorry to be so negative today. Tomorrow the sun is supposed to shine and the temps warm up 🤞and I anticipate feeling more like my usual self. Mr. Laila feels better today and, for what it’s worth, I’m glad I got my second booster shot 2 weeks ago.🤞.
Wishing everyone a nice weekend ahead and a Happy Mother’s Day💐

P.S. The good news is that the White Sox won both games of part 1 of the Crosstown Classic with the Cubs! 🥳

      Oh no, I’m so sorry!!

So far, my husband and I are fine. We are lucky we have a basement where my son hangs out anyway, with his tv and his computer…so mostly, he is in his room upstairs or in the basement, and when he is on the first floor, we all mask. When the weather was nice we could go outside to talk, but now it’s raining…boo. Anyway it is not a perfect system so we’ll see how it ends up.

If it was my husband, I could not put him in the basement and so I would probably have it by now.

Meanwhile, doing the same as you. Limiting trips, wearing a mask.

Condolences to your yoga teacher, that’s awful.

I fully intended to wear La Panthère today but on a whim decided that it might actually be a good occasion to spend a day in Déclaration. Somehow along the way I ended up wearing HdP 1740, and am now basking in its beautiful and luxurious drydown. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Which La Panthère do you have? I’m thinking about getting a bottle now that I’ve tried the EdP Légère and liked it so much.

Gaah! It was The Enabler with a decant.
Wonder of You is a grapefruity, zing of citrus.

        I’ve enjoyed both.
        There’s always others, too.
Like Labdamum oil from Le Labo. 😁

Friday at last. Or maybe I should borrow JadainGA’s “FriYAY”!

Got a bit of a scratchy throat today. I suspect that it is connected to all the sneezing I have been doing lately, thanks to the airborne pollens as of late. If it doesn’t go away in a couple of days I will use one of the COVID tests I have.

Many, many thanks to the NSTer who posted yesterday about Smell Bent. I went back to their website today for another sample pack… and ALL the samples are GONE! Wow, that was fast! So at least I have some of their goodies on the way.

SOTD = Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon. Love the gorgeous bottle this one has! Today there is something in it that reminds me of Kenzo Flower, oddly enough.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I have no Cartier perfumes. But, I went to the mall in search of a pair of espadrilles and thought it would be a good opportunity to achieve CP compliance.
I tried La Panthère EdP Légère and I like it so much I’m now contemplating acquiring a bottle.
I wonder if there are significant differences between the current formulations. Maybe I should go back and try all of them.

I liked several ( from J. Crew, Tory Burch, Coach, Kate Spade) but I found most of them to be too loose (causing gaping at the sides and top of my feet). I like mine to have a tight fit and that is proving a bit challenging.

    Happy friday!

I’m in La Panthere Parfum. It’s not actually a parfum concentration, just the name of another flanker. This one has notes of apricot and osmanthus that differentiate it from the others. It sounded better than it smells on my skin… oh well, at least I just got a travel spray.

I recently bought a bundle of decants/samples that are vanilla heavy. Can’t wait to sample more this weekend!

No Cartier here. The next time (when and if) I”m going to go shopping at Neiman’s or Saks I’ll make a point to try some of the ones I’m hearing about here. Instead I am wearing Amouage Love Tuberose. Which I do.

We have heat and humidity, gahhh. I’m going to try a friend’s recipe for turkey meatloaf tonight. Not much else is going on here, except that I’m a few episodes into Outer Range on Amazon Prime (Josh Brolin) and it’s pretty weird. It’s like Cormac McCarthy meets the X files. Huh?

Hope y’all have a nice weekend. My salute to all of you nurses. I got so much care and help from so many during my various hospital stays.

SotD Estee Lauder Tender Light. Reminds me a little of Sensuous/Sensuous Nude. I may have missed something in the sample stash, but no Cartier here. I’ve had my eye on LBdD and Must over the years, but never added any. Rain, rain – doing inside work, and listening to the birds who are busy singing and nesting in spite of the rain and cool.

I’ve been in Herba Fresca off and on all day today. I’m thinking I’ll be in it a lot over the next few days of scorching weather here in Houston. 🥵
I say “few days”; I don’t think the weather folk know when this unseasonably hot weather will end. Okay, I’ve done enough whinging!

I haven’t read any comments yet but I’m guessing I’m the only one wearing vintage Panthere, not to be confused with La Panthere, though I haven’t tried the latter. It’s lovely and I kept smelling in my sleeves and collars all day. It’s a fruity but balanced late 80 tuberose over a furry, ambery backdrop. I can’t believe I’ve had this mini from a swap a few years ago for so long and have somehow never worn it. It’s definitely my favorite Cartier from what I wore this week.
