It's Tuesday, National Caramel Day and Star Trek: First Contact Day. Birthdays: Booker T. Washington, Bette Davis. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Lalique Encre Noire for the Jacques Brel song Amsterdam. Tea at the moment is Dikom Estate Assam brewed with cacao husks and cinnamon.
Reminder: 4/8 is Jacques Brel’s birthday. If you like, tell us about a favorite Jacques Brel song and wear the fragrance to match. If you don't like, wear whatever you want.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Bonus watch / listen: David Bowie doing a cover of the English version of Amsterdam, released in 1973 as the B side to Sorrow. I adore the song and I adore Bowie but this is far from my favorite version and I am including it only to attract innocent bystanders to Jacques Brel. If you have the time, do go watch Brel sing it live in French, or watch Mort Shuman sing the English version for the 1975 film adaptation of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.
Note: the Bernardaud Tout Paris Teapot ("Bernardaud's Tout Paris Collection captures the spirit of France's capital city in a charming pattern that mixes iconic monuments with cafés and gardens") is $595 at Bloomingdales.
Caramel Day! I should have worn Demeter Caramel but no, I’m committed to French Week, so I’m in L’Artisan Parfumeur Eau du Navigateur, aka The Entire Contents Of An 18th-Century Cargo Ship Including Sweaty Sailors: coffee, leather, rum, spices, tobacco, a bit of mustiness, a lot of wood. It is deeply wonderful.
Gonna have some caramel popcorn later.
Your perfume sounds awesome!
Ooh, that sounds fabulous!
I’ve got a twofer today. I thunked a discovery set sample of Bruno Fazzolari Unsettled.
I like that one, you smell great!
That was one of the winners from BF for me.
Good Morning NST friends! I need to do better with posting. Life has been so chaotic for me. I miss you guys. My SOTD is Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone. It is good!
Hi, you smell great today.
Thank you!?
Nice to hear from you!
You too!!
Thank you! ?
Hey scentfromabove! Hope some of it is good chaos 🙂
Some is and some isn’t. ?
Ah, sorry then. Hope things get better.
OMG haven’t seen you in ages. Glad you are back.
Not that it is my business, but a few years back you had a new boyfriend. Still in the picture?
And you smell great. Still JM fan I see. Me too, but not as much as I was about 10 years ago. Too many other goodies out there.
Hiya!
Sipping Low Country from August Uncommon.
Got another sample pack as a gift for my birthday.
I the spirit of poetry month
“There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar..”
Commando at the moment. Going to the department store later to sample.
Nice poem! Enjoy your sniffing expedition.
Didn’t result in anything good to sniff.
Because of the damage poll yesterday , I was reminded by a NST reader of Jersey so I sprayed 4 giant sprays from the Chanel counter
You smell good tho!
Oh I used to love this as an edt, it was one of the first exclusifs I ever tried. I was given a sample when I bought too much make up and that then made me a very loyal Chanel customer for a long time-beautiful make up, accompanied by those samples! Is it still lovely?
Yes! It’s lovely ?
I also for the first time smelled Sycomore
What is that poem? I’d love to read more.
Lord Byron!
What did you think of Sycomore?
I liked it but not as much as Jersey or the other exclusifs
Wearing my sample today of Lazarus Douvos 1845, inspired by hajusuuri. Will report back later with my thoughts when it’s into the far drydown.
Are you still on the road?
We drove to San Francisco yesterday and are spending a couple days here with my parents. Back on the road Thursday, another night in a hotel, then we should arrive at the house in BC Friday.
Good then. Hope the rest of the trip is as it should be.
I hope your travels are going smoothly.
Thanks for the good wishes! In SF for two days then will continue north.
So far it’s a really nice rose scent, I can smell the immortelle and herbal notes, but not much patchouli.
Wearing Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions today, it’s a good transitional scent.
Bette Davis! My favorite actress ever (until I watch Barbara Stanwyck, then it’s a toss up.) I wish I had time today, I’d watch Now, Voyager and eat caramel corn.
Bette Davis is so amazing. I watched All About Eve last week on the Criterion Channel, and she’s magnificent: the movie is over two hours long and not one second of it is wasted. I’ll watch literally anything she’s in. (Joan Crawford is my toss-up: she’s always hypnotizing.)
All About Eve is Bette at her best.
Now Voyager
All About Eve
Watch along the Rhine
All This and Heaven too
Dark Victory
The Petrified Forest
Mr. Skeffington
finishing up with The Letter.
perfecto day.
No Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Love them all!
baby jane, not so much.
Wonderful list, I have seen some but need to see them all!
I cannot tell y’all how many times I have seen All About Eve. Half a dozen, maybe? She was also fantastic in Jezebel, which was a part given to her in recompense for losing out to Vivian Leigh as Scarlett. Oscar win for that one.
Speaking of Old Hollywood, I just finished Elizabeth and Monty, which detailed the deep friendship between La Liz (Taylor) and Montgomery Clift. And then I watched A Place in the Sun, the first film they starred in together. Shelley Winters really stood out in that one.
Commando today, but wore Burberry Body yesterday, and can still detect faint whisps of it.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/jul/29/bette-daviss-20-greatest-performances-ranked?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
A pretty incredible line up of movies. What a force.
Did you know she made a guest appearance on Perry Mason? She actually filled in for him as the defense lawyer when Raymond Burr was ill They were friends and she was an admirer of the show. She’s good in it! Other than her, I don’t recall any female attorneys, though there is an occasional female judge.
Gucci No3 today, from a vintage bottle i found at*bay for cheap. Sad that they dont make this any more.
My favorite singer Marc Almond ( from Soft Cell) made a whole album of Brel songs, called Jacques. Some are really good cover versions, maybe i will listen to it later.
Thank you, I will look for Marc Almond videos!
Oh I didn’t know Marc Almond had done that (he is such a fine singer) so thank you for this recommendation.
Looking this up right now!
You smelled wonderful today.
Made 1 online Sephora run this morning. Got that large bottle of Coco Mademoiselle Intense for me and Light Blue Intense for my mom’s birthday gift. Right now she is looking at Sephora to see if there is anything she would like. Will use my 2 other gift cards a little later in the week. Wearing the original Coco Mademoiselle today.
Yay for Sephora run!
Chanel house ? twins
LAdDm for me today. Wanted to make sure the nose still works, and is just stuffy. (It does.) I’m feeling better today, thankfully. Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes yesterday.
So glad you can still smell!! Fingers crossed that it stays that way.
Missed it yesterday but glad you’re feeling better. You smell great too!
I’m glad to hear your sense of smell is intact and you’re on the mend!
Pleased to hear that you are feeling better and that your sniffer is still intact!
I’m six essays away from submitting third quarter grades, and I’m smelling awesome in Le Labo Jasmin 17.
I forgot to confess to Donatella yesterday, but I so enjoyed reading all of your posts when I couldn’t sleep last night. I bought a set of Diptyque travel sprays, and they’ve been getting considerable wear. I also bought one of those huge samplers from Ulta, which only makes more apparent how similar so many mainstream perfumes are these days. I liked a few of them, though, and it was fun to try!
Go irisjasmine!! Finish those essays and get some sleep.
Hope you feel well and happy enough to really celebrate the end of this term/semester, you’re very nearly there!
I know too well the end of quarter grades feelings. You’ve got this!
Almost there! You can do it!
Hello!
Caramel day! It’s only fitting that I wear Candy.
I just saw this video of a parrot imitating a, well, you’ll see. Apparently they don’t just copy humans ? https://youtube.com/shorts/scZ0ATey_UQ?feature=share
Candy is perfect for Caramel Day. And the white bird – !
Love the kookaburra
Thanks for the video link! That was great!
My German shepherd ran over to investigate when the white bird started barking. Too cute.
That moonwalking bird was pretty darn funny!
Another lovely teapot! I would like some out of this cup please…!

Currently sitting in urgent care trying to get my prescriptions refilled. Ugh. But smelling good in Guerlain SDV from my itty bitty teeny weeny manufacturer’s sample.
Smell well, y’all!
Oh goodness, that cup is gorgeous! The peach glaze and the flower trim are really pretty.
Are you okay? Is it typical to get prescriptions filled in urgent care? Hope I’m not being nosy, just concerned and probably ignorant of the process.
No, I’m fine. Lol. It’s my regular maintenance medication and I have no refills left on my prescription, so I have to go to an UC to get a new Rx. Annoying, time consuming, and expensive, but since I travel I don’t have much of an alternative. ??♀️
Oh, I see. Yuck, I’m sorry you have to hang at a UC. At least you smell elegant!
You smell lovely ?
Thanks!
I hope you were able to get your prescriptions refilled without too much hassle!
$75 copay for the urgent care visit and he would only give me one month with no refills. These are maintenance medications, no pain meds of any kind and definitely not any narcotics. I’ve never felt so ripped off in my life…?
Argh.
That cup is beautiful!
Isn’t it just gorgeous?! Of course, I want one…?
I’m in Aedes Musc Encensee.
You smell fabulous and I’m going to join you in Aedes – Iris Nazarena for my week in iris scents.
The 7 Virtues Middle East Peace on my left arm and Noble Rose of Afghanistan on my right. Falling in love with the rose all over again, but the early 7 Virtues line seems to be unavailable unless one lives in Canada. ?
Ah well, I’ll use what I have and then fall in love with another decant of wonderfulness later! ?
Really? I do still see them on Sephora’s site here.
(But just checked, it’s just the new series. That’s too bad.)
I think they are clearing out the older series – they are four bottles for $116 on the 7 Virtues site. Really good deal.
Are you getting some? Is it four of your choice or four of one scent?
I’d like to order, but it’s a Canadian company and doesn’t ship to the US. The site allows for ordering four of any scent, including four of the same scent. Are you interested in any of them?
Their newer Rose Amber is pretty good, though! Maybe worth a try?
Hmm, it sounds like it has potential. I’ll try to test it next time I’m in a big S. Thanks for the tip! ?
It’s been a while since anyone has mentioned 7 Virtues here.
I have 5 from the traditional line that I purchased in a panic when they were discontinuing the original line. Did I need 5 full bottles? Probably not since I have yet to make a dent in any bottle. I can make you a decant of the Rose and any other you want to try. I think I have everyone except the patchouli. I also have Vetiver Elemi from their contemporary line. You can email me at:
dark magician grl ZERO in the land of yahooligans.
No spaces and use the numeral at the end.
Thank you so much! Emailing you now.
Sampling the final 3/5 of the Marissa Zappas I have. Lilac Dream is the stand-out for me, fbw. I’ve discovered a few perfumes I’d like to own more of in the last couple of months – a rarity for me! Happy Tuesday, all!
Which ones are your favorites?
I disliked Violet Hay, liked Anabel’s Birthday Cake, and Flaming Creature and The Sun Card were meh on me. Lilac Dream was the big win for sure. What are your favorites?
Thanks! I like Anabel’s Birthday Cake but have not tried anything else.
This one sounds really nice.
It really is! On me it’s a pure lilac soliflore.
Going for a FB of Lilac Dream?
Well, it’s on my short fbw list but I’d rather have a decant. Who knows, my two samples could last me forever! That has proven to be the case with a lot of things.
Just back from a trip to Vancouver Island, the first in maybe three years. Wearing work-friendly Bulgari blue tea and Douceur de Siam on left and right respectively.
Nice, hope it was fun!
I am wearing Acqua di Parma Magnolia Nobile today.
Yesterday I went shopping and smelled the three new Jo Malone fragrances from their blossom collection. Out of the three I really enjoyed Bitter Mandarin. I had it on all day and kept getting a delicious smell every now and then.
I don’t recall if you are in the US, Barqs, but Sephora just added Bitter Mandarin to their website, so you can get during the Spring sale. Ask me how I know…..
Oooooh, you bad…
Thanks ! I will check it out.
In Iunx Talc. Happy Tuesday!
You smell divine!
Thank you! ?
Smellin’ mighty fine!
Thank you! ?
I’m wearing Chipmunk today and I should stop postponing the inevitable and just buy it. Since the Splitmeet is coming soon, would anyone else be interested if I decided to split a bottle?
Buy it please. It sounds such a good perfume and it would be worth every cent.
Count me in for a split!
I bought Chipmunk last year, love it!
Me, too. Wearing it today!
I’d participate in that split!
I’ll participate too!
I’d be in for split.
10 hours sleep.
Arm pretty sore from second booster but that’s all so far.
Caramel – well Dzing! might be the SOTD.
Big heat coming to SoCal so going to take long walk along the end of the cliffs by Lunada Bay today while it’s still perfect out.
Have this week till new project starts.
I’m enjoying your good sleep! It’s makes a world of difference for me, attitude wise ?———>?
sleep is everything Deva.
Congrats on your jab!
I read that the International Space Station is due to fly directly overhead our town at 6.15 this morning ( our museum director is an enthusiastic astronomer and writes wonderful pieces for the newspaper, as well as taking amazing photos) . I’ll go outside in half an hour and see if I can spot it. Unfortunately it’s raining and stormy, with our first proper Antarctic southerly of the season so it’s unlikely the clouds will open. But you never know and I would get such a buzz , thinking about those astronauts way up there , wondering what they’re doing, if I see it. I still have my battered copy of The Home Planet. Wearing Ambre des Merveilles.
https://www.odt.co.nz/lifestyle/magazine/chasing-ultimate-image
Any luck? You smell great!
Cloud on cloud so I got rained on, heard the first aeroplane of the day pass overhead and saw the neighbours turn on the light in their kitchen. BUT it’ was up there so I stayed outside anyway, to “watch” them pass by. I am so sentimental these days.
https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2020/nov/10/gimme-some-space-inside-the-international-space-station-in-pictures?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
I like that.
House twin, I’m in EdM, so maybe siblings?
I hope that you will be able to see the Space Station at a later date. I remember getting a rush when I saw it for the first time flying overhead. ??
Kind of a Dealer’s Choice CP for me today. “Wishful Thinking”. Thus, I’m wearing Jour Ensolleille because we are in the midst of a string of overcast, wet days.
Planning to go see Belfast later this afternoon at our local cinema. Since my husband’s bowling league is done for the year, we can take advantage of $5 Tuesdays at the theater.
enjoy!!
Kanuka’s southerly will be heading our way, our forecast for tomorrow is a bit wintry. Meanwhile, I haven’t transitioned to warmer indoor clothing just yet, but definitely thicker jackets for outdoors.
Caron’s Parfum Sacré for me today.
That is a beautiful scent
I must have jinxed myslef last week when I said that rarely meet a cypress that I don’t like, bc I’m testing Tom Ford Italian Cypress today and it is a firm “nope” for me. I’m genuinely surprised that I don’t really like this, but something about the wood note — a licorice aspect maybe — is off putting to me. I’m embarassed to admit this here, but something in Eau de Mervilles turns my stomach, and I am getting the same reaction to this, just to a lesser degree. It must be some aroma compound that I am sensitive to. Very glad I decided against blind buying a FB when I had the chance.
Tea of the day is a russian caravan from McNulty’s Tea.
I’ve never been able to like EdM, even after trying it multiple times. I like most, if not all of the flankers, though.
It was lucky you passed up that blind buy then! Getting queasy from a perfume is not good at all. ?
Never be embarrassed to admit anything about perfume here, seriously!
❤️
Bowie:)
Commando on gusty day..it’s about the time where the winds really pick up here. Hopefully, no more gustnados for while. Lol.
It was not his finest, but yes, Bowie 🙂
Hello everyone and thanks Robin for all the musical links, wonderful! Someone-Jepster, maybe?-mentioned the Brel song “Jackie” yesterday and I have been grinning ever since with the Scott Walker version stuck in my head. Wore one of my new Masque Milano perfumes again today, Love Kills, which is a very lovely rose: rich, deep, and with some great movement and development, never heavy or cloying – it’s love alright! ?
What a fun song, I just listened to it. Thanks for sharing.
And your lucky Masque Milano purchases are making me so joyous!
Jackie was one of our favorites early on, and the Scott Walker is great fun.
Love the song “Jackie”–just a year or so ago, Andrew Rannells did a Live from Lincoln Center concert on PBS and he sang it!! Fantastic.
Oh, will have to investigate, thanks!
Songs of the Day:
https://youtu.be/hTWKbfoikeg
https://youtu.be/EPOIS5taqA8
The first one takes me right back to my college days. Sigh.
SOTD = still in 500 Years. Today is chilly, and rain has been threatening for most of the day. Nothing yet, though. ☔
Me too. And the second one takes me back to middle school! Double sigh.
I can’t believe it’s been 3 decades now! Tempus fugit indeed.
No rain yet but it is downhill from here on.
Yeah. And Mr. Jalapeno is planning on firing up the smoker for that pork shoulder tomorrow. Gonna be interesting.
Better Davis Eye’s plays on my work muzak. I love it!
Bette!
I guess that Muzak beats listening to a radio station that plays the same 10 songs on repeat all day.
Eau des Merveilles. I’m down to the last few mls of my travel spray and I had thought I wouldn’t replace it, but then I wore it and was reminded of how pretty it is.
Late today, but I did see a bit of blue sky when I left work!?
Sephora…
Oooooh, you bad… ?
Wore Wisteria Hysteria today because I couldn’t be bothered to dig the Dame Wisteria Soliflore out of whatever spot it currently is hiding in. In spite of the dark chilly damp days, my nose has declared it Springtime Anyway!!! and now I am getting all my spring and summer Florals lined up for daily duty. Tomorrow one of the several questionable lilacs I have – why is it so hard to do lilac? Or maybe Diorissimo. Or maybe… we’ll, we’ll just see in the morning!
I am likewise still waiting for the perfect lilac! Although En Passant comes close.
I love En Passant! If only the name were not so accurate!
Ha, it is not a powerhouse 🙂
My sotd is Cuir de Lancome.
I stopped at Sephora before work and tried the new Phlur line of perfume. I thought they were all very nice. I don’t care much for the names. I also sampled Elis Brooklyn Sun Fruit. I liked it too.
I got a call from my doctor yesterday telling me my daughter has hypothyroidism. She’s now on a medication for it.
Is that too low? What made the doc test for it?
Yeah it’s the too low one.
It showed up during routine blood work and he re-tested.
I will add she has gained quite a bit of weight the last 2 years. Originally thinking it was shutdown related. I’m sure it’s a combo of both though. I’m really hoping the medicine will get her metabolism back in check.
I hope so too!
Your SOTD is perfect for this time of year!
But, oy, Mom-ing has been a little difficult for you lately. Hugs!
It really has Jalapeno. Thanks for the hugs!
I layered up in Tauer Wowilla oil with Kiehl’s Musk. I’m needing the extra moisturizing factor with the oil so this seemed like a good combination.
Kiehl’s – so comforting!
SotD Miss Dior edt. I think it would go well with an evening in Paris (lower case “evening in”) that included a Jacques Brel performance, circa 1970.
Yes, perfect!
Late to the party in Diptyque Philosykos. I see many people wear this in the summer. I have always worn it in the winter, but I personally think it probably can be worn anytime. For some reason it just seems a little too heavy for warm weather. Probably just me.
Book of the week is The Midnight Library.
I like wearing Clinique Wrappings in the summer, and many people consider it a winter perfume. Vive la difference!
I will have to try Wrappings when the weather is warm! I find many woods and lighter incense work well for me in the summer.
Scent of the morning was Bois d’Armenie. But when it warmed this afternoon, I sampled Zegna’s Italian Bergamot and Mediterranean Neroli.
My goal this spring/summer is to explore more typical summery fragrances. I tend not to be drawn to them and they tend to not work great on my skin (all the freshies and citruses). But on the other hand, I also discovered this wonderful article by Claire Vukcevic on Basenotes, Summer Fragrances for People Who Hate Summer & Summer Fragrances.
https://basenotes.com/articles/summer-fragrances-for-people-who-hate-summer-also-summer-fragrances.3482/
It’s so wonderful and even the title had me chuckling!
Citrus is difficult for me, too.
Loved this article!
SOTD is Kelly Caleche. I’ve been wearing it a lot on work days lately.
Rain and a grumpy doggo. Must be Tuesday.
It was indeed TUESDAY.
Today’s SOTD was Cristalle, which doesn’t have much bearing on Jacques Brel, because M. Brel wasn’t even French! He was Belgian. I lived in Brussels for a while as a child, and I remember him being a BIG deal there. I’ve also always loved the title of the show “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.” I’ve never even seen the show, I just love its name!
But he seemed to see himself as French (he was not always complimentary towards his homeland) and the French adored him 🙂
SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDT
… continuing Iris week! ❤️
I haven’t posted pics on IG but may do a family line-up. Cable internet still not working but eh, DSL is.
WFH for the next 2 days so all is right with the world. The survey I mentioned last week was taken down pretty much immediately. I have not heard of anything negative happening to the person who posted it but perhaps I will never know ??♀️.
Perhaps best not to know.
No scent today….acupuncture appointment, but hope to switch out my fragrance tray with some spring selections. Seems late with spring here already, but I still have my heat on!!!
Rolling through my Jacques Brel favorites on YouTube, including the 2006 revival of JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL…. So many great songs.
