Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, New Year’s Day 2022

Posted by Robin on 1 January 2022 243 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, and Happy New Year! Welcome to January and welcome to 2022. It’s also the 8th day of Christmas (maids a-milking) and the last day of Kwanzaa (Imani: faith). Plus, Public Domain Day, Euro Day, and (hair of the dog that bit you?) National Bloody Mary Day. RIP Betty Marion White. PSA: Donatella will be dropping by on Tuesday to clear out last year’s damage.

We're marking the dawn of the New Year with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, any resolutions you're considering for 2022, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: the Rabbit Wonderball Snow Globe by &Klevering ("This Wonderball is home to a cute white bunny surrounded by golden snow") is $15 at Gretel Home.

    Happy New Year everybody! ???
I made it to half-past midnight yesterday and had only 1 cocktail. I remember when I used to party till sunrise but now I rather sleep.
Very sad news and RIP to our golden girl Ms. Betty White. I always thought she would make it over 100… I loved seeing her on TV, always brings a smile to my face.
On the perfume side of things I am wearing No.5 extrait. Elegant and pretty.
Currently drinking coffee, black and eating the last 2 of the macaroons I made.

    Happy New Year NST friends!
SOTD for me is Honeysuckle & Davana by Jo Malone. If you know me, you know I an always wearing a JM scent.
I stopped doing Resolutions a few years ago and changed it to a word that I would live by for the year. My word in 2921 was “empowering”. I wanted to empower myself and those around me and felt I lived up to that. This year, for 2022, my word is “positivity?. I want to have a positive outlook for myself and others this year. My goal is to spread a little positivity each and every day.
Happy New Year everyone, and here’s to a fantastic Year!

    Happy New Year!
I’ve missed participating on NST for the last couple of years, although have caught a moment occasionally to read some of the threads. My first resolution is to connect to this wonderful community more frequently in 2022.
We were with people last night, but this morning I’m wearing POAL because it’s just for me.

Happy New Year! Sotd Diptyque Tempo – I’m near the end of my second sample, and in reading some reviews on Fragrantica, I finally figured out that it is not sweet enough for me. Today it is seeming quite the aromatic and minty patchouli to my nose. I need to re-read the NST review of Tempo. I remember Kevin thinking it was good but not his style. Looking forward to Beef Stroganoff for lunch. I have not made it in years and it just hit the spot of being festive and comforting. It is so simple, most any recipe works, and if you don’t eat beef, I seem to recall it is excellent with only mushroom in the creamy sauce.

Diptyque Tempo was one I bought upon first smelling it. I was at a Diptyque event and the GWPs were a strong pull as well. Also, you can’t tell from the bottle but the juice turns a neon green. I asked Diptyque why and I got a not very convincing “it’s the quality of the raw marerials” answer.

“Quality of the materials??” OOOkay, LOL! Tempo was a strong like at first sniff, but every now and then I do the rational thing and test something several times. I don’t think I have found my true love patchouli yet, instead enjoying in most in the drydown of some of my vintage favorites.

It’s always interesting to me how differently we can perceive the same perfume. I found Tempo on the sweet side! It’s lovely, but I have my patch needs met with Angel EdP, Angel EdT, and Reminiscence Patchouli.

Yes, that’s how it often is. Who knows, on another day I might pick up more sweetness! You’re an Angel fan, eh? I am still testing Angel; it’s one I find a bit much though in no way unappealing.

Happy New Year! May we all bring good things to the world and each other this year. I thought I would wear Ormond Woman today but instead, Bois des Iles called out to me. I’ll wear the OJ tomorrow.

I baked another stollen for breakfast today and that seems like a great start to the new year.

BTW, I just realized I never responded to your comments from a few days ago:
      – no dull note that I detected in Tapestry, but my nose cannot be trusted as I typically cannot tease out notes unless they are prominent.
      – And the owl in Tears of Iris – noticed it upon first opening the box. I did not know prior to purchasing!

Wearing Russian Tea again. Oh and with a small amount of L’ombre dans L’eau on one wrist from my solid compact.
Last night I ordered a super cute travel spray of Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo – wanted to try something from Jul et Mad because all their perfume’s notes sound so amazing!! Lots of cloves or ginger or pepper etc. They all sound like some masterpieces!!
This morning I bought a travel spray of Mancera Wild Cherry.
I love anything cherry/cherry blossom but… wild cherry? You mean like the one native to Europe to? The one that grew in my Greatgrandma’s/Grandma’s yard? The one that maybe even a little tangy or used mostly for jam but we still ate it as kids and generations before us did as well? Oh yes yes and yes!! Cannot wait for it to arrive!!

Acqua di Parma has a somewhat new cherry blossom scent you might like, if you haven’t tried it. It’s not too sweet, rather delicate, but not bland.

I’ve enjoyed a Mancera or two, and also love cherry scents. Do report when you get yours! Also, I like fresh tart cherries, too! There used to be a big cherry tree next to the street at a rental house near me, and few of the tenants ever bothered about the fruit. I and another family used to pick them. It would be covered in cherries – almost like a child’s drawing can look! But we had a bad drought one summer and the old tree did not survive.

Awww that is ashame the old tree didn’t survive… It had to be old though but You know what? Old and very old cherry trees will still produce great fruit. That is the kind of cherry I am looking for in Mancera… fresh and wild!!

I remembered to rabbit when I woke at 1-o-something, and repeated them for me, you, and everyone at 7:45 when I woke up for realsies … so if you forgot, I’ve got your back. Basking in small sprays of Champaca at the moment, and have decided to borrow scentfromabove’s resolution replacement idea — my word is “optimism”. I shall find as many things to be optimistic about as possible, as often as possible. Even if others find it insufferable. ?

SOTD is a lavish spray of Sandlesun. I had a good nights sleep, didn’t make it to midnight but I wasn’t really trying.
Like Scentfromabove, I stopped doing resolutions that just made me feel bad…lose weight, work out more, etc. instead I pick a fun positive thing. Pre-Covid it was get a massage once a month. Last year it was start learning Italian, just because I wanted to. This year it’s take quarterly trips alone. I travel with my hubby but I need alone time. This last years been very difficult in that aspect. So a nice weekend somewhere by myself is the goal. Nothing fancy, just time alone.

Happy New Year friends! I just love this day!

I was woken up by fireworks at midnight and thought about all the hopes for 2022 they represented and the incredible resilience they demonstrated. I said my rabbits and sent some out into the universe to work their magic.

I’m wearing Demeter’s Beeswax which smells of real beeswax with just a hint of honey and flowers. It’s a wonderful companion and very restful and grounding. It makes me happy.

    Happy New Year!

Wearing SL Iris Silver Mist after taking a shower with an iris soap that a wonderful NSTer sent me recently and that I was waiting for New Year’s day to start using it. Thank you!

Thanks all for all your beautiful New Year’s and well wishes to me and my doggie yesterday. They were so appreciated! I had a very quiet and relaxing time with my sleeping doggie last night, and I managed to stay up until midnight. Today, doggie is still in the slow recovery process , and I started my cleaning and organizing tasks for this weekend.

I made a quick run to CVS first thing early this morning to pick up a med for my mom, and all the Valentine’s Day stuff was already out for sale. I shouldn’t be surprised since that’s nothing new, but for some reason, it shocked me a bit. I was trying to look for some Christmas Peeps on sale, just to see the Valentine ones at regular price. Too early for that!

Have a happy, safe, and healthy weekend, everyone! ?

      You smell great!

Home Goods started with the V-Day stuff 3 weeks ago. It was kind of deceiving because somehow, gnomes are being repurposed from Christmas to Valentines.

I’m glad you chose not to join your sisters and family – you will see them in person at some point when it is safer for you to do so considering your concern for your mom.

      I hope doggie’s doing better!

Thank you, Hajusuuri! I really enjoyed having a nice and relaxing time for myself last night. I just hope now that mom gets unscratched from the family gathering.

It is so boring that we don’t have a visual gap between celebrations at the stores anymore. Everything gets mixed these days.

Happy New Year!? I happily ate more puff pastry than intended last night ? and may join cazaubon in VD (Vanilla Diorama) not venereal disease 😉 later today.

I was reading an article yesterday and it said something to the effect of…as we enter into year three of the pandemic…and I thought…year 3? It’s been two years, folks…not 3…but then realized, of course, we are in fact entering year three…and that thought was sobering and somewhat sad to sit with. But it also reminded me of the amazing resilience people have shown during this time and how we can find strength, hope and light even when things are dark.

I am so grateful for the vaccines and amazing healthcare workers like our very own Deva!?

Happy New Year and another lovely day here. Whatever else the year brings, at least it started with proper summer weather. Yesterday, we walked down to the waterfront and and icecream in the hot sun 🙂 . In the Wellington climate, that’s a real treat.
The cat is on the windowsill chittering excitedly at a pigeon on the neighbour’s roof, so she is also having a good start to the day.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2022 will be way better than 2021. I’m trying for optimism, but bracing myself just in case. I did stay up til midnight because I’m a night owl, and heard people in my neighborhood shooting off fireworks, so I’m glad some people were celebrating!

I have a bunch of work I have to do this weekend to prepare for an online class I’m giving on Wednesday, and I didn’t have enough time at work to make much progress on it, so boo, hiss. They also gave me very little notice, so… I’m currently procrastinating! I organized a bunch of my perfume samples and went through some of the junk that collects on my table, so at least I’m accomplishing some things.

I have various samples sprayed on myself at the mo, and will try something new after I shower. Maybe one of my new Smell Bent samples!

Best wishes to all you NSTers, and many thanks for this lovely community.

Happy New Year to you, socks! I had the same thought as you when neighborhood fireworks started going off at midnight: it was nice that people were celebrating. Our new kitten was, surprisingly, more curious then scared, and he look out the window at the bursts. Our old grandma kitty just hunkered down under a chair. She has seen it all before =^v^= Oh I hope your class goes well and remember you are not procrastinating, you are subconsciously preparing!

Another good theme. I’m persevering with my new eating plan and considering whether a food is good for me and will nourish my body, has been very helpful. In the past I treated myself with a glass of wine or a rich meal simply for ‘surviving’ stressful days. It’s an entirely new mind set.

I totally forgot to rabbit today, because, like, duh, what does New Year’s Eve have to do with the start of a new month?
Today I’m wearing Chanel Le Lion. Hmmm. It’s a good fragrance but somehow just doesn’t do anything for me. It seems sort of one-note, or lacking development.
A friend of mine who is a super-foodie has covid now (vaxed and boosted) and is posting about his interesting experiences of eating and smelling with no tastes or odors… he says foods are only appealing now due to their textures. I suppose it’s good he can get something positive out of this experience, but let’s all hope the good things come back (for him and everyone else!).

You’re right. Omicron seems to give a really horribly sore throat. But so far, I’ve not encountered anyone with Omicron with anosmia. I have a friend who is a virologist and they monitor the variants (easy to do with Omicron as it dropped the S-peak on the Thermo Fisher PCR platform) and she says they’re seeing a resurgence of three gene positive tests. The jury is out on whether it is remnants of delta still in circulation or an entirely new variant.

I enjoy textures, as well. Not harsh, like chips or anything like that, everything has to be soft. But, plain pasta, pancakes, puffy cereal(that’s about as rough as I’ll go) are all different soft textures.
I won’t rec for anyone, but I taste salt and sweet. I’m going to town putting as much salt and sweetness into anything I eat.

SOTD = Jo Malone Silver Birch & Lavender

Love it! Earlier than expected purchase because of a $50 Nordstrom Note that would have expired 12/31/21; it turned out to be a promotional credit that I could not have converted to a gift card. It’s citrus up top, lavender and woods.

Yesterday, I ended up making Spaghetti Carbonara using Fettuccine instead, bacon instead of guanciale, egg whites instead of whole eggs, barely any Parmesan as it was too hard to grate from the snack size blocks and added green peas which I recall my mom used to add. This was not cooked in an air fryer ?. Yummy, with leftovers. BTW, I defrosted a whole bag of frozen peas and realized after 2 days that the liquid content actually stayed inside the peas!

For those still looking for at home COVID test kits, the company known for ED relief (yes, THAT ED) is selling a two-pack for $30. It was very amusing to read this but that company had expanded over the last few years and you may be surprised at what services / products it offers. One commenter (NYT article) mentioned that he was receiving quite a few ads on ED; I think there’s a way to trick the algorithm. Also, please note that I do think that our phones can actually hear what we’re saying due to the ads that show up based on conversations. Not a conspiracy theory but you can experiment – use something like a brand of cleaning products.

    Happy New Year fragrant friends!

I’m wafting pretty in Vanilla Flash – I should really wear this more often.

One big resolution I made was a No Buy 2022. This means perfume too, although I have an anniversary giftcard at Indigo still waiting to be spent ?

Wow you have an excellent memory! I’m impressed!

So I was going to get Rose de Jamal as a self-reward if I hit my work goal this summer, but now I’m just going to get with my anniversary giftcard once there’s a sale and THEN all the money I’m saving by having a No Buy Year will go towards a seriously big self-reward if I meet my goal. I’m in an “up or out” field so this goal has pretty high stakes and I felt deserves a proportionally high reward. I’m think a trip to ??

Happy Happy New Year! Hope it’s wonderful! I am staying cozy in 10CC today.

It snowed about a foot yesterday (finally)! My first big snow since moving to Colorado. It’s so beautiful but man, it’s cold today. High of 12. I’m going to lay around, read, and have a little drink maybe.

I logged in earlier and was inspired by springpansy’s SotD, so I’m in Bois de Iles. Keeping with a sandalwood theme, I was in Tam Dao yesterday and maybe tomorrow 10CC….?
I am feeling fairly accomplished for the first day of the year. Ran a few errands this morning. The grocery and target were surprisingly dead. Cleaned out my closet AND the fridge. Oh how I love a clean and sparkly fridge, and there were a handful of expired things that needed to go. Tomorrow I’ll tackle the freezer, but this year I’m not taking the pullout drawer fully out. I took it out last year and had a terrible time getting it back in. I got so frustrated it ended up sitting in a corner of the kitchen (in time out?) for a couple of weeks until I felt like dealing with it again. This year I’ll just wipe it out really well.
I just took a pan of brownies out of the oven and am about to sit back, enjoy an adult beverage and catch up on comments.
Echoing others sentiments, thank you Robin for this corner of the internet!?

I seriously thought all the stores would be closed today (my husband called me clueless as to the ways of consumer capitalism ?) so I was pleasantly surprised when my local HomeGoods was open and killed an hour strictly browsing there. It’s my winter happy place.

Okay, the might be a bit of hyperbole, but really, the new year is not starting off well considering the ? show at work last night. This is my last night and I’m so happy (tap dancing happy!). Like, I want to pull a Julie Andrews and start warbling “The hills are alive..!” I knew, as soon as I saw Betty White had gone space trucking, this wasn’t going to be a great day. Alas, it finally ended! And I have gone around the bend to arrive at Thankfullness! Oh, and the sun’s out! ?

Happy New Year everyone! Today I rang in the 1st of January – royal style – with some Cleopatra. I like this one, thumbs up for me!

Very saddened to hear about the late great Ms. White; she left behind an extensive – and hilarious – body of work, and was a great animal advocate. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of celebrations were in store for her centennial.

The amateur pyrotechnicians are at it again in my neighborhood tonight despite the rain. They started early last night, too. Fortunately, they weren’t very persistent. ??✨?

I think this year’s resolution, if it can be called that, will be to continue to roll with the punches as best I can. Resilience is something we can use more of, right?

I found out about Betty White in an all caps text from my daughter. We spent some time talking….Golden Girls came on TV at 3 on weekdays. I got off work at 2:30 and bolted to pick up my daughter from school, and by 3:00, we both had a dish of Cheezits and watched GG. After that it was time for playing outside, or homework or whatever.
Wearing my beloved Imperial Opoponax on a cold snowy day. I only wear it in the winter and it smells so familiar and wonderful.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

I wanted to thank all those who recommended Jo Malone fragrances for a friend who heard about the brand on a local TV morning show. He told me today that Pomegranate Noir is a winner!
That means that not only he, but also his wife and teenagers liked it.

I’ve recommended quite a number of fragrances for him, but few have made it through his in-house focus group. Scents have to not only smell good, but also match his masculine self-image and streamlined, athletic style.

I thought the brand would likely disappoint, and they did feel most of the samples were too soft or more like room sprays. Pomegranate Noir passed the test. ?

? Happy New Year everyone! ?

I’ve been taking it easy today, walked the dog and puttered around in the kitchen a bit. Managed to make the black eyed pea casserole, but will have to wait until tomorrow to make the brie and the banana bread. The hubster has Walt he’s the Madden special and I started watching The Morning Show. Yeah, I’m a bit late.

I remembered my rabbits this morning, 3:30am! I have two extra sets if anyone in need. ?

I was so sorry to read about your horrible visit. My mom has had visits like that with my youngest brother and his family. She’d sit in her room most afternoons waiting for him to come home to be a distraction to the conflict between her and the DIL. Life’s too short.

That makes me sad to think about your mom sitting alone like that! It’s exactly what I was doing to avoid the crazy, so it hits a nerve.

After reflecting on the holiday season, I realized the only conflict-free get together we had was the Halloween party with the dog park buddies. Funny in a way, yet sad.

I hope your mom can somehow figure out a way to have a pleasant visit with your brother, yet preserve her emotional health. Old Herbaceous had a very good suggestion: visit, but stay in a hotel, so one always has a place to go if others (ahem) need a time-out.

You are so correct….life is way too short. Happy new year to you!

    Happy new year, dear NSTers!

??? I remembered to rabbit when I was awoken by fireworks last night, and I have extras to share! We all need the best of luck this year.

It was a cold but gorgeously sunny day here, and we had a little reunion with my son’s old classmates at the park. It was a terrific way to kick off the new year, catching up with old friends. I wore Shalimar Philtre, which always seems extremely soft to me, but my husband did detect it and complimented me!

Off to read comments, and so very happy to have NST.

Happy New Year, NST! We had a fun NYE at home last night — made filet mignon and mushroom risotto, danced around the living room (well I did, anyway, while DH was cooking), and watched two Thin Man movies. Actually stayed up til midnight, though I probably shouldn’t have.

I puttered around today, did nothing much, enjoyed the sun which has been pretty rare of late. Currently sipping the champagne left over from last night — can’t let it go to waste, lol. We have a nifty champagne re-corker which really does work. SOTD is 10CC, seems like a popular choice 🙂

Amber Oud for the first day of this NewYear! Lemongrass beef noodle salad for dinner, cut back on fish sauce and sugar a bit, and it was still super tasty with a squirt of lime juice. 2022 is the year of the garden. January is the month of taxes- for two people living simply with few bills, our taxes are pretty complicated. So we need a whole month to fiddle with them. Once that is out of the way it’s all garden, all the time! Stay warm and well, everyone!

It took me a while to realize that I could modify the multi-hour multi-step recipes to fit my usual cooking routine and this one, for example is easy and very tasty and costs less than 30% of what it costs at a restaurant, to make at home. My husband loves it, and it has become our Saturday evening go to meal, instead of a rare treat.

Meanwhile I’m enjoying the various tributes to John Madden. I adored him when I was a huge Raider fan, consider him a pioneer in making football accessible to the common fan and was absolutely thrilled many years ago to sit at the same Amtrak bar as him waiting for our trains.

Forgot to mention (while reading everyone else’s comments today) that I am enjoying Russian Leather from my drop-dead-gorgeous bottle. I had a huge surprise with this one – it turned out to be more lavender than anything else!! I almost ordered Lavande Romaine instead of this one – but I am very very happy with Russian Leather. Just the perfect lavender I had been searching for!!
