Happy Hump Day and happy National Brownie Day! Birthdays: Camille Claudel, Diego Rivera, Sammy Davis Jr, Gregg Allman, Jim Morrison, Mary Gordon. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in the very un-Emily-Dickinson-ish Vanille Banane by Comptoir Sud Pacifique — points for clover all the same!
Reminder: on 12/10, for Emily Dickinson's birthday, wear a fragrance with a note she mentioned in one of her poems (helpful lists here, here, here).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dickinson/moss/chypre day 3, and I am in EL Knowing parfum, in my opinion one of the all-time great chypres. I dabbed a little inside my mask so I could smell it all day at work, too.
Fuuny, I wore this on Monday from a mini i got in the 90ies
In Tam Dao today, no clue if it’s CP compliant but I just wanted to smell good! Hoping it helps me power through Wednesday.
I bet ED would like Tam Dao better than my choice, Vanille Banane.
I’m in Grey Flannel, which I did not buy at the supermarket, but which I could have.
I used to love that one!
One of my best friends ( who now lives in Melbourne) used to wear this every day and it smelled so good on him.
Started off in LaVanilla Pure Vanilla from my tiny rollerball bottle, then decided to top it with a dab of 5 o’clock au gingembre. I may not be CP compliant but I do smell yummy. The layering seems to have brought out what I am perceiving as a light tobacco note. Is that possible?
A database I use to make clips for my film course was down yesterday as I was writing the final exam, and two of my library colleagues worked several hours into the evening (well after the end of their work day) to help me get access to the materials I need. I work with great people. I wish we weren’t in a situation where so many are fantasizing about quitting or retiring early.
Points for honey!
Working with great people makes all the difference! Congrats on finishing your final exam, especially under stressful circumstances.
Oh I am so glad you have supportive colleagues! Mr Dolce is an academic and that’s the sort of thing that keeps him going. I quit the scene a few years ago-my whole family are teachers and they were so proud of me, but I barely lasted ten years. Good luck to you!
Sotd is JM Peony Blush Suede layered with Red Roses. Roses points again!
Currently drinking my second mug of Earl Grey.
I am on my second cup of chai
Ooh, that sounds like a lovely combo
Very nice combination. I wear Peony Blush with Wood Sage and Sea Salt in the summer months.
Started with a sample of Pichola and found it too tuberose heavy so I added American Beauty on top. It smells better now but I would prefer straight up rose from American Beauty by itself. Tuberose is my perfume nemesis.
And my bff
I wish it loved me, I like it so well on others!
I luuuurve Pichola, so the perfume world is in balance.
I am not a big fan of vanilla, but I woke up craving for it. So BBW Vanilla Bean Noel shower gel and body lotion followed by several sprays of L’Artisan Couleur Vanille is giving me the comfort I was looking for.
On my second cup of coffee and having few pieces of dark chocolate. Ready to face the other half of the working day.
Happy Hump day, everyone! ?
I used BBW Vanilla Bean Noel shower gel, scrub and body cream last night before bed. I am not a huge vanilla fan either, but this was a nice comfortable fragrance for the night.
It is! And I like that it is not so sweet. Light and comfy!
So glad you found comfort today!
Thank you! That combo works pretty well!
Glad to hear that you found a vanilla combo which worked for you today!
It was pretty nice. I can still smell the Coleur Vanille in my wrists!
Vanilla Bean Noel smells like French Vanilla ice cream to me. Yum!
That’s why I like it! ?
Good morning everyone.
Sipping my FIL chai.
Today my oldest is 7. Remember when I was just announcing I gave birth?-that seems like yesterday.
I am wearing Love Extreme which is her favorite of my perfume collection.
Happy birthday to your daughter . I hope you have a wonderful day together.
How fast it all goes and with a nod to Mary Gordon…what will she do with her one wild and precious life?
Happy Birthday to your daughter, I hope she is enjoying her special day! I *do* remember that time seven years ago and those years have certainly flown by.
Happy birthday to her! The time certainly flies.
Thanks all! It’s extra special with the grandparents here
How does the time go so fast? All the best to your firstborn!
Happy birthday to your daughter!
A birthday scented by grandpa’s chai and her favorite of your perfumes is a wonderful scent memory. Happy birthday to her!
Happy birthday to your little sweetie, enjoy the family visit!
What a lovely time for you all! Sending a Le Lion hug
Happy 7th! Hope she has a perfect day.
It really does seem like you were telling us about your daughter’s birth just yesterday! Happy Birthday wishes to her! ??
Hope it was a fantastic Birthday for your daughter!
Happy birthday to your little one, and enjoy your company!
Taking points for the honey in Indochine. Here is my favorite Dickinson “bee” poem:
To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee,
One clover, and a bee.
The revery alone will do,
If bees are few.
You smell great!
I love that poem!
I might as well just wear a straight up “bee” with Zooligist’s Bee ?
I love that poem too.
Mitsouko for the moss, etc. Chypres are our friend.
Yes they are!
Sotd is Caron Aimez-Moi. I’m so grateful to have found this fragrance on NST when we highlighted violet. I’m not sure how much it’s the fragrance or me aging (probably both) but today I’m in revery and pretty sure ED and the bees would like this too.
You smell great !
I love that one! Now I’m wondering if my decant is amongst the dregs, so I’m looking forward to finding out!
I cannot help but suspect that ED would have enjoyed a perfume called Aimez Moi.
Love me is fine —
Cleaved to my wrist
I’ll tell you how the Sun rose –
A Ribbon at a time –
The Steeples swam in Amethyst –
The news, like Squirrels, ran –
The Hills untied their Bonnets –
The Bobolinks – begun –
Then I said softly to myself –
‘That must have been the Sun!’
Just been listening to the dawn chorus and looking at the light on the hills across the valley. At this time of year the Manuka is in flower so the dark green bush covering the slopes is broken by drifts of white. From this distance it looks like patches of snow. . Looked up bobolinks as I have never heard of them. Wearing sun.
What did you find for bobolinks? I’ve never heard of them either.
Thanks for the info!
Yes thanks! I have never seen one and was thinking of bobwhites when I saw it mentioned which was all wrong!
Bobolinks are birds. They are like sparrows or little songbirds. Very common in the US northeast.
They look cool
The bees must be having a feast, do you have hives in your area? I know manuka honey is highly prized and expensive here.
Estée Lauder Private Collection
You smell perfect.
it’s really cold here this morning. Wearing Une Nuit Nomad Ambre Kadjar. mmm, cozy.
Brrr first of the season cold twins. I did my early morning walk in a down coat (but it was a bit too heavy by the time I got going).
As a gardener she must have mentioned Roses, so Perles de Lalique for work and Lady Rose Lion for the evening. The more I wear it, the more I like it.
I read that the rose is the most named flower of all the flowers named in her poems
I think one of my dregs today is quite suitable for the cp: Drole de Rose. The other is CBIHP’s Rare Flowers Series Jasmine Sambac which I can barely smell. It has summoned up revery and lament, though. I never got to smell CBIHP’S Doll’s Head and I will never forget the magic of that smell on Christmas morning.
Yes, that plastic smell on Xmas morning, I remember that too!
They just don’t make plastic like they used to! ?
In Le Lion today, not aiming for CP compliance but really, almost anything with a flowering plant in it might qualify!
Made it through the heavy meetings in the front end of the week, and wound up having a weirdly wonderful time of it yesterday. Yesterday’s 6-hour in-person workshop involved a delightful group of people (including lots of time with my professional crush), and a ridgetop break from the won’t-quit grey skies and a chance to soak up a sky full of stars and the crescent moon, shockingly bright above the hills. Makes today’s return to cold grey drizzle much more bearable, to know that all that beauty is still up there, sailing above us.
yes, it is.
How lovely to see the stars and moon! It’s been very cloudy here lately, even rained yesterday morning, but it cleared a bit in the late afternoon and it was cheering to see a bit of reflected sun and blue sky near sunset.
It’s been downright Pacific Northwesty around here lately, and a lot of days with eyebrow-dampening tule fog that doesn’t lift all day, so it feels like a particularly squashing sort of grey. But seeing that scintillating sky from the top of the highest ridge in the landscape was just magical!
Twins! And so glad you had a lovely evening.
Le Lion is rapidly becoming one of my Little Black Dress perfumes — it suits most moods, most days, most outfits, most weather, and I feel pulled together in it without it feeling too cool or abstract or aloof on days when I want something with some snuggle and sexiness.
Yay for a “LBD” type of perfume! And Double Yay for seeing the moon and stars after a long period of yuck and grey. ?⭐??
I’ve been in an irritable kind of mood lately where all the music in my collection feels tired and all the perfume in my collection feels too pushy. The LBD perfumes (come to think of it, my other main one is Shalimar, which bears a big old resemblance to Le Lion) are the ones that somehow make me feel both elegant and comfy. Sometimes it can be so challenging to fit fragrance into my emotional landscape — it’s such an emotional thing in itself!
Akro Awake (Does Emily have a poem about coffee?) Trying to be super efficient at work as we are leaving early afternoon for a short trip to the islands. Mostly packed!
She has one poem with coffee in it, apparently but I haven’t found it yet. She also finished meals with coffee and Brie.
Coffee and brie sounds delicious. I would add a few walnuts and slices of pear to that.
Is it true, dear Sue?
Are there two?
I shouldn’t like to come
For fear of joggling Him!
If I could shut him up
In a Coffee Cup,
Or tie him to a pin
Till I got in —
Or make him fast
To “Toby’s” fist —
Hist! Whist! I’d come!
She wrote/ sent this poem for her sister in law, Susan, when ‘Sue’had her first baby
Have a fabulous time in the San Juans!
Thx ? ? ? ? (well, that last emoji is not the right kind of island!)
Are you enjoying this Akro?
I am enjoying it – possibly the best coffee fragrance I’ve tried. I will say that although they talk about it being dark and bitter, I find it on the sweeter side. LuckyScent’s description is right on.
SOTD is Memoirs of a Trespasser with a spray of Tigers Nest on top. Pretty nice!
That sounds like a good combo!
Wearing Ormonde Woman today, after finally thunking my sample of Vetiver Tonka over the past couple of days. I feel very excited that I’ve met my perfume goals for the year–use up 12 samples (roughly one per month), as well as a few larger decants and bottles that were close to empty. Now it’s time to take stock and see what the use-ups will be for next year.
The thing about thunking though, is that I want to enjoy what I’m wearing and not just get through it. Is your goal working for you? (not trying to say this should not be your goal, I’m just interested in how this works out in reality for you.)
The goal is totally working out! In the past, I’ve used up way more than 12 samples in a year. But I chose 12 for this year because it seemed like a manageable way to a) work through some of the sample pile, b) still get to wear other things, and c) would be easily attainable based on what I had that was already half used, etc.
I’ve definitely been enjoying stuff and not just powering though it. But especially for 1-2mL samples, there’s not that many wears in them, and I don’t want them to go off. They seem like good things to focus on. Vetiver Tonka happened to be a much larger than usual sample (4 whole mL), so I got to wear it a lot, which is good, because I really like it. Not sure if I need to buy it, given the number of other vetiver scents I still have…
Twins! And you smell fabulous, of course!
I’m thinking I’ll be in Sundowner again today because yesterday I roamed into the civilized world and was testing perfumes in a Sephora in the “big city.” I enjoyed Sundowner until it got lost in all that testing.
I also think I need more than 3 swipes from my mini. It seems like this one would really be better served by spraying.
I enjoyed the opening tobacco. In the middle I smelled some florals, but the note pyramid is completely lacking anything in the floral category? My nose must be wonky, and of course unrefined. I admire those people who can say with any type of certainty “That’s Iris! That’s rose! That’s tuberose!” If it’s not the dominant note, I can never tell. It’s basically “Me likey, me no likey.”
Anywho, Happy Humpday! It’s quite grey and dreary here. The skies are hanging low and getting snagged in the black bones of tree limbs. The ground is so wet it squishes when you walk on it and there’s standing water everywhere. Wish I could direct some of this water to parched areas in desperate need.
As for ED, I’m a mediocre fan of her poetry, but a big fan of her sense of self, her delightfully curious and observational mind, her lack of ego, and her connection to the natural world.
Weirdly, we’re a parched area in desperate need and also everything is wet and squishy. Such is the architecture of a major drought. Thanks for these notes on Sundowner! So far, it’s sounding good and something that would fall in my “me likey” category; alas, paying the heating bill will have to take precedence over any more perfume purchases until spring.
All I can say is don’t trust MY nose. Go with those who are much more learned in the world of perfumery than myself!
Also, the 5ml are pretty affordable and a good way to find out if you’re going to need a “large sample,” as hajusuuri puts it. I also got a mini of Au Coeur Du Desert and it’s stunning, IMO. Might need a large sample ?
I love both Sundowner and Au Coeur du Désert. Sundowner needs to be sprayed I think.
Totally agree. I have a couple tobacco centric perfumes (tabac aurea and Kalemat) so don’t think I need a large sample of Sundowner. Au Coeur is another story…?
I always say I can’t trust my nose!
I’m following a few others and assuming any flower will fit the CP, and I’m wearing Hiris. We have our team Christmas lunch today, and I don’t want to wear anything too potent that would clash with the food
Yep, iris gets points!
Not sure that it is CP compliant but wearing Chanel Coco Noir on this chilly day in South Dakota.
I really like this one! Enjoy.
First, I need to direct you all to the Tilda Swinton as Libraries thread on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JudeAtwood/status/1468030063819964424?t=h47aMuH8DRO8nQAbrwKAlw&s=19
SOTD is Strange Invisible Perfumes Dimanche and yesterday was their L’Invisible.
She is beautiful and a chameleon.
That is such a weird and wonderful thread! Thanks for sharing.
What a fun thread!!!
I started the day in Tobacco Vanille layered with Serge Lutens Gris Clair but tonight I’m in Histoire d’Eau, I wish Christine Nagel had created something this successful at Hermes.
I am wishing she would do one of the Jardins or Merveilles that I would like. I did like the Hermessences.
Yes, a Good Jardin would be something to look forward to for sure.
CP compliant, testing Cassili. If it were a quarter of the cost, I would be tempted. It reminds of something DSH might do.
If it were a quarter of the cost, I would be tempted — my common refrain
It’s Winter Palace kind of day.
Hope that is a good thing!
I have a stressful family situation that I am dealing with and haven’t worn perfume in a few days. I am trying to stay calm and not think too far ahead but it is tough. I may venture to wear something with vanilla later today.
Maybe perfume might help a bit? And vanilla is great for soothing frayed nerves. I hope things get better for you soon!
Sending good vibes your way, She-ra.
Vanilla is so soothing. Sorry you’re dealing with family drama, especially during the holidays, which can be the worst time of year for many people. I say spray your favorite vanilla with abandon!
I’m so sorry about the drama. Maybe one of your softer vanillas will be just the thing to soothe you.
Sending hugs and positive vibes, She-ra! ?
I am so sorry and hope everything will resolve.
Sending hugs and soothings your way. I hope things feel more manageable soon!
So sorry for the stressful situation. Maybe hajusuuri the vanilla?
Sorry to hear of icky family drama – here’s hoping you get beyond it soon and unscathed.
Bletch on the family drama; sorry to hear that it has reared its ugly head. Sending you virtual vanilla-scented hugs.
Sending you strength She-ra!
In the mother of all filthy vanillas, Shalimar. I love thee so. I think I could happily wear this everyday, but of course I never will
But, but, I always feel so elegant when I wear Shalimar! Are people looking down their noses at me and muttering, “That filthy vanilla hussy…”?
I should wear it more often — vintage Shalimar parfum is one of the few things I have a back-up-bottle of, and it spends entirely too much time sitting on a dark shelf like the good china.
I have an extrait de parfum that I got around 12 years ago. It’s glorious but hardly clean. Lived in elegance, I guess
I suspect that my headstone may wind up reading “Glorious but hardly clean”
That would be an EPIC epitaph!
Thus far I haven’t encountered any drama for Saturday’s funeral. Currently in no 5 edt but will wear De Profundis for Saturday.
Hope the drama continues to stay away.
Glad to hear that things are quiet re: funeral drama for you.
I saw BBW had a big sale on the 1 wick candles. Did you get any?
I did Candle Day and bought 2 candles that day. It’s a big fat no with buying any more candles for a very long time. Got over 80 candles and don’t have space for more candles.
So happy to the the sun back this morning! The grey skies get me down. Wearing Parfums MDCI Rose de Siwa thanks to our lovely hajusuuri.
You smell so pretty!
That is such a lovely rose!
In Kenzo Flower Oriental –at least one Dickinson poem mentions violets so I’m good.
Plus, you smell great!
CP compliant in a sample of JM White Moss & Snowdrop. It smells cold and bitter in a good way, and later warms up a little with tonka and a hint of cardamom.
Had the F&M Earl Gray and Sicilian Lemon & Ginger tea from the advent calendar last night. Their EG is good, no surprise there. The SL&G was a big hit with me, and mom & sister who also have this advent calendar. It is the right amount of tart and spicy, with other flavors going on in the background to elevate it above a homemade cup of hot water with slices of lemon and ginger. That one is going on the list for a full tin.
A good lemon tea is definitely noteworthy. ?
Memo French Leather for me today. ❤️
Mmmmmmmm … yum.
Did you buy a bottle of that? Or is it from a sample?
It was a sample from my buddy at NM.
SOTD = Sonoma Scent Studio Pacific Forest
I just THUNKED my travel spray of this! Aaaand I am taking credit for the CP because Violet.
I do have a 17mL bottle of this just waiting in the wings for such an occasion.
No IG posts as of now as I’ve been too preoccupied (with work) and will be posting pics later.
In other news, has anyone tried DSH Raisin d’ Ete? I got my sample and I say it is too salty, at least on paper.
Been a while since I’ve seen you mention SSS.
You are right – 14x including today since my account begun December 2018! I’m sure I wore it more times though as I had some gaps in SOTD photo-taking.
You rarely thunk anything!
Correcto so I am happy but only because I have a BUB!
I hate when work gets in the way of life! ?
I know, right?
I’m in OJ Woman today, with extra sprays just because. Now sitting here thinking about what to write in holiday cards going to various friends we only hear from once a year (and vice versa). How to sum up this past year without going on for pages? Mr. G and I are not Holiday Newsletter types – there isn’t THAT much going on here, for pete’s sake – but I kind of want to say more than just hi-we’re-still-alive-how-about-you, you know? Ah well, I’ll come up with something.
Thank you for mentioning holiday cards – I found some I liked early this year which meant that there was a long time before I’d need to send them and now there isn’t!
Hello everyone. I started the day in Kelly Calèche, forgot about it and added Youth Dew, then tried Le Lion on the way home from the cinema so I am reeking splendour tonight. It is now definitely something I want a bottle of ? The film was The Power of the Dog, matinee screening on a rare half day from work. I found myself weirdly resistant to everything about it for the first half an hour, but by some later stage was completely gripped. It was just brilliant. I am so glad I had a chance to see it on the big screen! Thanks to everyone who reviewed it here and encouraged me ?
Youth Dew and Le Lion in one day?? Be still my heart!! You are indeed reeking splendour!
Keep calm and REEK on!
I had an early visit from Santa in the form of a sample set of Amouage perfumes (from me to me), and today I’m wearing Dia Woman. It’s really heavy aldehydes at first and then rose/peony/heliotrope and sandalwood. ED would surely like the flower garden notes in this!
Jolly Old Santa – what a great gift set!
Wow! Santa has excellent taste in perfume! ??
I’ve had a few “from me to me” gifts this past week, too. I mean, 25% off my favorite skin care, 20% off at Sephora, triple points at Ulta…suffice it to say I’m set for all of 2022. I hope you find true love in that sample set! ❤️
Busy today, so I am posting a little late. Not CP compliant, b/c I needed warming & cozy in my SOTD pick again.
SOTD = back to AG Ambre Fetiche. Might be time to bring out my bottle of this one…
Was it warmer for you today? It made it to 28 degrees here. They say by next week it might hit 50 again!
Not really. It was about the same temp as yesterday… “properly December-ish”, according to one of the local weather guys/gals. There’s one more day like that for this week, and then the temps start going up again. It might hit 70 (!?!) here on Saturday, which is completely nuts!
You smell mighty fine! When I took out the garbage this evening, it was sleeting.
SotD Estee Lauder Tender Light, the first one listed on the description folder that came with my set of minis of the new “Luxury Fragrances.” As others have noticed the names are very generic and I had to think to remember it. So far it seems very plain and soapy but as it is likeable, I can be impressed with its heft. When looking it up I remembered the fragrance by Margaretha Ley called “Tender Light,” a dialed-down version of her original eponymous perfume. Speaking of which, I voted for ML in the Fragrantica Reader’s Choice poll which I enjoy. The other four I submitted (for best Woman’s Perfume) were Estee, Timeless, Je Reviens, and Mahora. There were many others I’d consider “Best” but they were already listed and got my votes. Of course there is only one “best,” but as I understand that supposedly emerges from the game of the poll. In going through my collection, I thought of one of my favorite Emily Dickinson poems: https://allpoetry.com/It-Dropped-So-Low—-In-My-Regard—
It does not sound luxurious, though?
It’s been a long day, but now I have my feet up and a cold drink in hand. I’m wearing Musk Deer.
How are things coming along with your blanket?
CP points today, wearing Gris Dior with a lovely rose note.
Chanel Allure edp was my sotd.
Work was unsettling today because a new girl was let go ( due to being rude to customers)
She freaked out and caused a scene yelling obscenities and such. Sigh…
OMG! What a ? show! Sorry that you had to witness that.
Lordy! People are so crazy! Sounds like they made the right move by letting her go. She’ll move on to terrorize clients some where else.
In all the years I’ve been a nurse, I only reported one co-worker. She was so mean to patients, I went to management (and I never go to management for ANYTHING! I avoid the Dark Side like the plague!), and they completely blew me off. Then a family member complained, which had management stepping quick to look through camera footage. After that she was told if she didn’t resign, she’d be fired. These are the people you worry about coming back to exact “revenge!” ?
Oh boy but it sounds like a good decision was made.
What is wrong with people these days? I heard a similar story at the dog park tonight. I hope you can relax this evening and regroup.
