Thursday scent of the day 11/11

Posted by Robin on 11 November 2021 215 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Veterans Day. (Plus, a handful of literary birthdays: Carlos Fuentes, Kurt Vonnegut, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mary Gaitskill.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm waking up slowly in Eau d’Italie Baume du Doge.

Reminder: on 11/12 we're doing Dealer's Choice, edition 5...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    SoTD: DSH Balls…Said the Queen
SoTMorning: Cultured Cup Creme de Earl Grey
Lippie oTD: Nivea lip balm in Blackberry. It’s a good dupe for Clinique Black Honey. I guess BH was recently rediscovered and is now hard to find. Did some research, and it originally was a potted lip gloss. Did not know that! ?

I love BH! In the 1990’s, they had a BH gel eye liner and shadow palette which was amazingly good. It made brown eyes pop and green eyes greener – it was fabulous stuff.

Lol, I’m pretty sure I have that palette! My green eyes need to go and look for it. Their eyeshadows in general were great. Plenty of pigment but not so saturated as to be hard to use.

I remember that. It lasted much better than the Chanel Vamp.
A close dupe that’s still available is Dark Side Of The Moon nail polish by Deborah Lippman.

In Canada, it’s Remembrance Day. I don’t have a scent that calls that to mind, so I’m wearing, just because, Boucheron Pour Homme EDP (so much better than the EDT), a rich, complicated aromatic floral chypre with oh so much oakmoss. Lots of scents smell good: this one smells *fascinating*.

SotD is MM Russian Tea. Love it!!
I have ordered a bunch of Creed samples. One of them is Love in Black. I love and used to own a large bottle of Love in White. Very curious about Love in Black. Also purchased a bottle of Creed 2000 Fleurs. I found an authentic bottle and – click! – ordered. I got this because I LOVE green tea done by Creed (Asian Green Tea) and 2000 Fleurs has all the florals I love: rose, jasmine, violet, iris even lilac… but all this plus a green tea note in the heart!! Cannot wait until all of it arrives at my doorstep.
A Roses Diptyque candle has arrived yesterday and I am so excited to give it to our family friend along with a box of chocolates – a little “Thank You, We love You – Happy Thanksgiving!” gift.

Happy almost Friday (and Veteran’s day in the U.S.), my SOTD is Bandit. Just because galbanum and leather is on my radar today.

Both the hubby and I are off work today, dentist later (ugh), but hooray for the 22 flights of stairs for the workout…
For now, coffee consumed and I’m off to the gym!

My SodD is L’Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme, (thank you CobraRosa).

Having my second cup of coffee with a dash of pumpkin spice and creamer and two Brazilian cheese buns (pão de queijo).

I have the day off today, so I am almost on my way out to run errands. I am planning to stop by at Trader Joe’s to get 2 of their advent beauty calendars to add to my sisters Christmas presents and a bunch of their 99 cents chocolate advent calendars for some of my coworkers kids. Trying to keep things as fun and simple as possible, for the holiday presents this year.

Beautiful sunny, breezy day, before the rain arrives tonight and the temperatures drop down.

    Happy almost Friday, everyone! ?

I got the Moderna vax from start to finish. I think this one has higher incidence of “side effects” because it’s a higher dosage. I’m not complaining, trust me! I’m happy it gave my immune system a kick in the pants! I just went to bed at 4pm and slept till this morning, now feeling fine!

I had Moderna as well for my first and second shot (last one in June). Were your side effects worse this time than with the earlier shots?
I was fine after the first but the second made me feel like I had been hit by several trucks only to be shoved in a refrigerator afterwards.

Yes, from what I understand the first shot is a particular dose and most people tolerated it well. The second dose was double the first, thus the higher incidence of “side effects.” The booster is the same dose as the initial dose. Not sure why I had mild side effects after the booster…? Anyway, glad I got the booster, but I think I actually had covid before it was generally accepted as being here in the US. I had a very ill atypical pneumonia patient who was requiring more and more oxygen support, changes in LOC, etc., and he was coughing in my face the entire shift. Two weeks later I was so sick I thought I was going to die! I’m pretty sure that pt was transferred to ICU, but I don’t know what happened to him long term. 2 months later the US was acknowledging the existence of covid here in the states. ??‍♀️

And to be clear, my side effects after the booster were not as severe as the ones after the second Moderna dose. I did a 3 mile hike the day after that one and wasn’t sure I was going to make it?

I got the booster about 630 pm Tuesday and felt perfectly fine until about Wednesday at 3pm. Then extreme fatigue and some mild muscle and joint aches. Went to bed at 4pm and woke this morning about 830 feeling fine. To be honest, I think my reaction may be because my second dose of the Moderna vax was in January. Almost a year between second dose of vaccine and booster…so my rationale, based on zero scientific evidence, is that my titer was quite low. Just guessing. I’d be interested to know if folks who got the second Moderna less than 7-8 months ago have similar reactions…

I had almost no reaction to Moderna #1 other than a very sore arm, then 24 hours of fever & aches & general misery after #2.

Wearing Deneuve right now. My sister texted me not too long ago telling me what my 10 year old nephew wants for his birthday. He is still really into Legos. She said he keeps asking for these larger sets but they are expensive. Looked on Amazon and they are. For 500 pieces or more, you are looking at at least $50 and if it’s something like Star Wars, it’s even more. Got 2 weeks to pick it out and get it to him.

It’s Veterans Day in the U.S., a sad day of remembrance for some, a proud day for others (past, present and future) and a day off for others.

I probably should do some work-work but they will still be there tomorrow so I am likely to just relax and run errands for the rest of the day!

Volutes edp today. TF Ebene Fume and AT Sundowner have arrived, but with our good friend dying last week I have not opened them.

I need to associate them with something else or return them.

Might anyone have strong feelings (either way) about DSH Caravan Spice? am thinking about getting.

It’s so sad. It’s probably too soon but maybe keep them as a memorial in honour of the love and warmth of your close friendship, and a reminder of that, rather than linking them to a brutal end.

Yup. The ground is absolutely saturated here. All rain is now just runoff.

Inspired by your talk of arm knitting, I bought some Bernat #7 blanket yarn and cued up a YouTube tutorial. I got about halfway through it and HATED it! The stitches were not consistent and the whole think looked messy. I tore it all out and will try finger knitting to get smaller stitches and hopefully it will look better! Enjoy your sunny warm weather?

Feeling better. No perfume yet. Back to work for the adults and back to school for the youngest. I forgot to mention, we had the J&J vaccine early March and clearly a booster is needed after about 6 months. Again I have to mention what a scary virus covid is – we were vaccinated and even my husband (small, wiry, extremely fit) was really very ill. Enjoy your perfume, NST. And the smell of coffee!

Wow, glad you’re on the mend. In the U.S., J&J boosters are recommended 2 months after the shot. Of course this decision was made 7 – 8 months after the vaccine was approved. I don’t understand why these decisions are made country by country if they are essentially the same vaccine (by maker)?

The international film festival is showing here at the moment and yesterday I saw Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria which stars Tilda Swinton. It’s set in Colombia and Swinton’s character hears a kind of sonic boom that no one else is aware of, and the film is very sound sensory and immersive. Wearing Soto la Luna gardenia as a match to the lush settings.

SOTD is 5 o’clock au gingembre, dabbed rather than sprayed, to keep it classroom friendly. Autumn weather is coming back today — grey and decidedly windy.

Mascara question: apparently Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir is discontinued (or at least, no longer available at Sephora). Suggestions for a sub? I prefer ones that are available as minis so I can open a new tube every there months without throwing out a lot of product. (Yes, that means more discarded plastic tubes. No, that does not make me happy.) I put an Ilia and a Lancome mini in my Sephora sale basket, and can add one or two more of there is something worth checking out.

I am fussy about mascara, but I hated the Ilia that comes in the tan tube. On me, it flaked but was also impossible to remove completely. I’ve had better luck with lancome, and I like benefit bad gal (which I think comes in a mini?).

I wore Goldfield & Banks White Sandalwood yesterday. It was….nice I think? Nacho had surgery yesterday. He ruptured a disc and a fragment was floating and it was all pressing on his spinal cord, cause the pain, lack of use and weakness in hid back legs etc. They had to go in and clean it all up. I was a nervous wreck all day, so probably not the best day to sample something new haha. Anyway, Nacho came out of anesthesia smoothly and had a good night considering. They have him up walking today but he’s pretty loopy from the drugs. I thought we’d get to see him tomorrow but now I don’t think it will be until the end of the weekend maybe (I think I misheard them in the chaos of it all happening fast). My poor little buddy….

In something familiar, Le Lion, today.

SOTD is a sample of Boclet’s Vanille because Aurora mentioned wearing it recently. It’s really lovely! A slightly smokey vanilla with citrus. My CP this Friday might end up being wearing something someone on NST has worn recently, since I did this too yesterday!

Robin, I love the Venice photo today. It made me reminisce about my trips there. I love just about everything Venice, even the decay and impending doom about the whole place. It just makes it ever more special. Ok, I don’t love the gargantuan cruise ships come so close, a true abomination!

Parle Moi Milky Musk today. It’s wonderful. Note to my very patient split partners: I finally received the bottle yesterday evening and will get these mailed out to you by tomorrow!

On another kind of crabby note – I realize that LuckyScent’s complimentary samples with orders are just that – complimentary. BUT I spent $200 (also bought a candle I’ve wanted) and of the samples they included, only ONE was what I had requested. Really?? The rest were available, so why? They could be missing out on a sale. Okay, that’s my rant for the day. (I remember one of you posting something like that before, but I hadn’t experienced it.)

I gave up on LS when I purchased a bottle that went missing and they refused to give me a refund for two weeks. When I asked them to send me a replacement bottle instead of the me refund, they told me they “were out of stock and that perfume is no longer being manufactured” which was a bunch of hooey because it was my beloved Papillon Bengale Rouge. Finally got a refund, bought a bottle from Twisted Lilly, who got it to me in 3 days. The original bottle showed up 3 weeks later in a mangle package from Utah, bottle and box open, everything shoved back in the shipping box. Lucky Scent and I are no bueno ??‍♀️

Bulgari Black, because I have not worn it thus year. Time for some skin time. It’s nice, but the rubber note clings to my skin, I would like a bit more sweet notes. And it reminds me of the Lapsang Souchong, that a former boss used to drink alllll the time.
Tried a new lentil soup recipe with roasted tomato paste and Parmesan rinds, that turned out great. Found it on the blog of TheKitchn. Com. I pureed the rinds, when they were soft to amp up the umami. The boyfriend was very pleased.

My Dealer’s Choice perfume for today falls under the theme: “Ooh la la, pass me the riding horse crop . . . ”

Well in name, if not in scent. I’m in SL’s Nuit de Cellophane.

While the name may be errrr ahem suggestive, the fragrance is a fluffy bunny hopping through jasmine and peach trees.

It felt like a cozy caramel kind of day, so I’m wearing samples of Candy and SOL Cheirosa ’62 (I wish they had just called it Bum Bum). this is my first time in a looooong time trying Candy and it is much nicer than I remembered. I think I originally tried it in Sephora and formed my opinion based on the first five minutes. Turns out I rather like how it mellows after a few hours. SC’62 is just fun. My nose brain keeps telling me there is coconut in-between the caramel and roasted nuts, but I know there isn’t. I’m not big on beach vacations, but the next time I take one, I’m going to wear this the whole time.

Prada Candy surprised me when I first tried it… much less sweet than I was expecting. I’ve come to the conclusion that it would be travel spray worthy since I am not a fan of rollerballs.

I don’t think I’m going to need more than my sample sprayer, but if I do, I won’t be able to resist going for at least 1 oz because that bottle design is the intersection of chic and playful! ??

There used to be or maybe there still is a Sephora perfume sample set for which Prada Candy is one of the perfumes you can get with coupon. I think the size is the super cute 30mL.

This is how you earn so many enabler pins!

You are right — this Candy sample came from a Sephora sample set. I knew I wanted a 50ml of the SOL Cheirose ‘62, and it was less expensive to buy the sample set and use the Sephora coupon to get a FB than it was to just buy a FB of SC ‘62. So I think perfume math makes the whole thing free, no?

LOL. It is indeed perfumath free!

Finished my sample of Rosarium. It’s a fairly quiet scent; I mostly got the woody mid-notes. I got this to try as an incense scent with a few other notes I usually like. Didn’t get the carrot seed or violet notes listed. It could just be my nose! It’s nice but I can cross it off the list.

Previewing one of the Dealer’s Choice themes I’m considering for tomorrow: Long Lost Loves, which can be a fragrance you love that is discontinued, or a fragrance that reminds you of any lost love: person, pet, place, possession, etc. For today: the late, great Ostara, from Penhaligon’s. Why, oh why, was it here so briefly??

Keeping Veteran’s Day in mind. It’s a somber remembrance for me, along with Memorial Day. A lot of my uncles and cousins served in the military, as did my Dad.

SOTD = ELdO Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection, from the sample stash. Still in roses today, but decided to switch it up a bit. ???

I like the name of that scent for Veterans Day also – on a few levels. Very nice.

Back in the day, they didn’t think it was a big deal. Seems to be a common attitude among that generation.

Nice that you really appreciate your families’ sacrifices. Did your town do a service for the Veterans?

The town/city I live in doesn’t have a parade or ceremony on Veteran’s Day that I am aware of. There are places nearby that do, though. And I suspect that maybe some of them did something on Sunday.

My town does a beautiful ceremony. 11/11 at 11am 11minutes moment of silence. Names are read of town veterans and even mentioned my father. He lived in town, but was from NY originally. Music from the local school, kids read poetry. Not as many people attend as they would if they went just one time. Bummed I missed it this year.

Love that you chose Eau de Protection! My husband is a veteran (Navy), as are his older brother and father (Air Force). My dad was an Army veteran, like his father and brother. My English grandfather was a career officer in the Royal Navy. I’m grateful for your family’s service, and humbled by the many who have served to keep us safe and free.

I am wearing Acqua di Parma Lily of the Valley. My husband and I took a short to trip to Florida, then flew back home EARLY this morning. We left hotel at 5am this morning.

We will be home for less than 24 hours, because tomorrow we will leave early to drive to Tennessee for a family wedding. My goddaughter is getting married 🙂

Posting and running from work. Sotd is Le Lion. On my way to work tonight my brother called to tell me his whole family has covid. His wife is very sick. Apparently they tried to give her the antibody treatment but she had some type of allergic reaction ( I really don’t know much about this) anyway he is mostly suffering sinus issues, he says the worst ever, and one child has already recovered. He is vaccinated as of 2 months ago.

Not to be a board hog, but…
I got my test and I ?did it wrong. The woman guiding me was letting me fumble around, when it should have been so much easier. Even opening the swab, she watched me struggle, when it was a snap. I had a line up of cars behind me and she just glared at me, like I was wasting her time. The ultimate kicker was thinking the swab didn’t hurt at all and it was just up and in 1/2 inch. Didn’t flinch. Took about 5 seconds each nostril. I wondered why people thought it hurt.

Luckily enough, Fresh Cream Suede made me smile.

Re: COVID tests. Mr. Jalapeno has had to take a couple of them prior to surgical procedures. He said the older ones went “almost up to my brain stem” and hurt like Hades. The newer tests he has had apparently aren’t as invasive.

Yes, my son had some of the early tests and they were awful. WAY up his nose! Later tests were much easier and more comfortable. I think it had to do with where and how much the early tests had to swab to get reliable results. The university where I work has been using saliva tests for several months now, which is a further improvement. Glad yours wasn’t as awful as it might have been!

          You guys are so kind.
