Wednesday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2021 273 Comments

It's Hump Day and National Stress Awareness Day. Birthdays: Walker Evans, Anna Wintour. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Donna Karan Black Cashmere.

Reminder: 11/5 is SWINTON’s birthday. Wear Like This, or any other Etat Libre d'Orange fragrance, if you have one. If you don't, or if you're not in the mood for Etat Libre d'Orange (or if you just wore Like This for the Pumpkin Spice project), do something else. You could listen to Tilda Swinton read the Rumi poem that inspired the fragrance, and choose something based on that?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from [Untitled photo, possibly related to: Fruit sign. Beaufort, South Carolina], Walker Evans, 1936, via Farm Security Administration - Office of War Information Photograph Collection (Library of Congress), no known restrictions.

Is anyone else hungry with the change in the weather. I have been eating so much lately. This morning sausage, eggs with mushrooms, toast and a pear. Well..that should keep me full until…

Testing two Shalimars today, and one wrist MVP (thank you to the split meet) and the other Shalimar Madagascar flanker.

Makeup Dior shadow pallet and some of their concealer.

I am SO with you on the toast! Nutella or toasted with butter and a good Marmalade.
I recently discovered Carbonaut, a low-calorie (50 cal/slice), low-carb (14gr/slice), GF bread at Sprouts. It’s is pretty good for what it is.
And high in fiber, 13 gr/slice.

Kyoto today. I think I’ll actually put on a bit of makeup today: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (original formula) and my (very old, but still perfect) Burnt Sugar lippie from Bobbi Brown.

Yoga, then muesli with blueberries, then work. But only a half day today, yippee.

LM’s original tinted moisturizer was really great. The new formula isn’t to my liking, unfortunately. BB Lippies were my gateway into her products. Burnt Sugar is a favorite! Have a fantastic day!

I’ve heard the new LM formula is not great. Any contenders for replacement?

I use the one by Dermalogica and like it very much. It has non-irritating sunscreen that doesn’t skew white, and it smells slightly minty.

Oh, that’s such a bummer when we get to the last bits of our favorite lippie!
I’m in the camp of “not a fan of the new” formulation of LM’s tinted moisturizer.
          My new favorites are:
-For normal/oily skin-Australian Gold Botanical Tinted Face (Mineral) Sunscreen SPF 50. Comes in 3 tints. Great for summer, and it survives my hot flashes without melting down my face.
-For Normal/dry skin-DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. Contains niacinamide for skin-brightening.
-For more coverage with SPF, Missha Perfect Cover BB cream, SPF 42, PA ++++ (it has UVA & UVB protection).

Do you find the new LM oxidizes on your skin? I got a small tube of it in what I thought was the proper color. It applied just fine, but an hour later I saw that telltale line on my jaw…

YSL Nu EDP, the one in the hockey puck. I love that it’s so aggressively unisex — not the usual anodyne “let’s not offend anyone”, but “FACE FULL OF BLACK PEPPER oh pretty flowers CAN YOU HANDLE THIS SPIKY INCENSE ooh soft creamy sandalwood so nice”. It’s confusing, in the best possible way.

I’m wearing Wakening Woods of Scandinavia. I love the blast of fir in the opening, but then the middle floral notes kick in and then I don’t love it so much. I should have taken the time to grab Lankaran Forest, but I was in a hurry and this was handy. Oh well.

Yesterday was my Black Cashmere day, today it’s Le Lion from the splitmeet.
I’m in bed with my left leg on this big foam wedge that keeps my foot higher than my heart after extensive foot and ankle surgeries last Friday. I’ve waited 2 1/2 years for this all to be done, my foot needed to be rebuilt for a bunch of different reasons and as late as Sept covid caused cancelations. So 2 wks only getting from bed to bathroom, then I see the dr, then I will still be non weight bearing for another month, then I start PT. It’s a long recovery and I thought I would be able to get to my perfume cabinet but I can’t for a while. Meantime I have a bag of samples etc, and have had my husband get perfume out for me. He would choose Coco every day.

Throwing my shoes on for a walk. I love the change in seasons, the crisp air that Fall brings. :)

I love Peets. I lived near one in the SF.
I also loved blue bottle, but went to them when they were operating out of a garage like structure, not the big brand they have turned into now..I use to pick up their beans at the ferry building farmers market. Those were the days.

I went to that farmers market when I was visiting SF in December 2007. It was amazing, and the food vendors were unbelievable. It was like eating in a fine restaurant, except the food was served outdoors at a picnic bench. I’ve possibly posted about this before, so forgive me if I’ve repeated myself!

Robin – quick question. I’ve thought of something else I’d like offer to split. Is it kosher for me to offer that in our Friday and/or weekend poll or is it best to wait for the next splitmeet. I can’t remember.

Speaking of which, I have 10 ml Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa leftover from the splitmeet if anyone’s interested.

So, for various reasons I would rather not *frequently* have swaps and splits in the regular poll comments. I don’t mind freebies.

But since you’ve just thought of it, and since I just told kpaint she could keep offering her SPR that got taken and then not taken, yes, do go ahead. See if you can finish with it by the end of the week, let’s say?

Hello everyone, it’s mid-afternoon here and I am still feeling cold after getting drenched during a lunchtime walk. But I am in a delicate atmosphere of En Passant. I meant to dig out a few ELDO samples but am wearing a lilac jumper and then really wanted lilacs, so here I am, pretending that it’s a cold day in late spring instead of what’s really outside. Hope everyone’s day goes as well as possible.

    Good morning Y’all,

Wearing Tiffany by Tiffany and Co from 2017…..a nice sweet iris. I occasionally crave it!

Unrelated thought but related to the week’s theme: A couple of weeks ago my family caught a planetarium show called “Phantom of the Universe: The Hunt for Dark Matter”. As the lights dimmed and it started, I immediately recognized the gorgeous, soothing voice of Tilda Swinton narrating it. Highly recommend this show if you’re hanging out at your local museum! :)

Happy birthday! I gave myself the Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays for my birthday this summer and yes, those bottles are certainly pretty. I am hankering after their Rose and would be interested to hear your thoughts on the tuberose! The jasmine is beautiful, by the way-fresh, dewy and clear, but with a delicate fleshy warmth to it too. Hope the dinner is great fun!

You are definitely making me want to try that Jasmine (Jasmine in general is probably my most-loved material)! I also live PMC’s Rose and have debated seeking out more. I had a decant of their Osmanthus, too, which I liked very much, but I gave it to my mother-in-law because she loved it. Thanks for the good wishes!

Oh, also, I would say the tuberose is greener than most but dries down with considerable floral sweetness. Less dramatic than carnal flower but never veers toward beach territory. It’s my favorite Tuberose, and the only one I’ve ever wanted in full bottle!

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, this is very helpful (especially the comparison to Carnal Flower, which I have-and green sounds heavenly!). Inspired by a couple of people today & yesterday, I dug through my samples and pulled out Jour Ensoleillé, which I haven’t worn in a long time. I’d forgotten how much I like this one. I could use the thought of a sunny day in all the rain. :)

Wednesday…feels like I’ve lived a full week already. Taking deep breaths and thinking of the sun. Plus the rest of the week should be easier, I hope, except for the stress of having to take my first long transit ride tomorrow. Going during off hours should help, I hope.

It’s amazing how something so totally normal pre-COVID now completely weirds me out. Everyone’s masked and our vaccination rate is over 80%, but still, 45 minutes each way in a train car with no control over how close people are is stressing me out.

That said, when we went to my dad’s in the US recently and he wanted to cross over to Idaho for dinner at this amazing steakhouse we’ve been going to all my life, I drew the line. Almost certainy unvaxxed staff and patrons…doesn’t matter that I’m vaccinated, I don’t want the virus as I know people with breakthrough cases and I’m not keen to be one.

Same. I used to go to a concert or other type of performance several times a month pre-COVID, and now the thought of sitting indoors with 100s (or event just 10s) of people for hours has me completely freaked out. And no way can I handle somewhere where I can’t be masked the whole time, like a restaurant.

I’m still a bit weirded out by concerts, even though they check vaccine passports here. And my spouse is a performing artist…yet I still am watching all the concerts at home.

We have the same train time commute! The first few times back in June were nail-biters. So far, I have been lucky that people know not to squeeze themselves in the middle seats and I am usually on the train earlier in the journey than many and have my pick of seats.

Moon Bloom today, and rather a lot of it, to kick off a rare 3-day vacation with sweetness and gladness. Heading up into the Sierra foothills to visit my dearest friend, hike, laugh, talk, drink, sight see, and spend a couple of nights in a historic hotel. I don’t do this often enough so I’m feeling a bit daunted by the partial-day drive through unfamiliar, busy highways and freeways, but I have a feeling it’ll be a great trip. Packed my best silk jammies and my well-worn copy of Cold Comfort Farm and leaving my computer behind. Have a great rest of your week, everyone!

BTW, eyedrops didn’t do a thing for my dry eyes. What did help has taking Flaxseed Oil capsules. It took a couple of months for me to see results, though.

Eau d’Hermes today, from a recent StC order. It does that thing where at first you’re not sure if it’s fabulous or filthy, but after a few wearings I’ve decided it’s both, and I need a full bottle in my life. Vivid citrus, glorious spices – that cumin! it sings! – and warm, sensual leather. Took me way too long to sample this stuff.

Very much aware that stress exists today, thanks. One of the cats threw up on the bed this morning, so I had an unexpected load of laundry to do. I am choosing not to name the guilty party.

I didn’t wear perfume this morning, but calmed down and felt better by the afternoon. It’s not like the cat wanted to barf where she did.

Oh, I feel you. My kitty has a hairball coming and has been threatening it on both the new hardwood floor and on the rugs, which would then have to be taken up and to the cleaners. If she does it on the floor in the middle of the night, we’re screwed — not supposed to have liquid on the floor for any length of time, and I’m sure whatever acid is included will not help.

That said, my kid has been generating the unexpected loads of laundry and cleaning this week. She sprayed her hair blue for Halloween, and no matter how much you shampoo, that stuff does not come out entirely on the first shampoo, or the second. We used the expensive stuff, and still it doesn’t help. Important lessons for a kid to learn?

I’d much rather have my cats “do the deed” on a hard surface, rather than carpet or bedding. I haven’t noticed any damage on my hardwood floors from vomit. Definitely scratches due to kitty claws, though.

Are your hardwood floors all varnished? Whatever they used for us is some light hardwood that doesn’t have a conventional varnish on it, and I’ve already seen damage from having water on it too long — it leaves a permanent dark stain.

I have to pull out my bottle of AP to try again. Rose is a tricky note for me usually but it’s such a complex fragrance.

And sorry about the kitty accident; that’s the worst. I’ve had it happen a time or 2 on the Comforter. Usually my cat would find the carpeted area in time so the bedding spots were the “I’m really not feeling good” spot!

I’m continuing my ELDO journey this week with Remarkable People. I really love this one. If I was a signature scent kinda gal, this one would be in the running. Champagne, grapefruit without the side of sulfur and spices. Nice. If anyone has an unloved bottle of this sitting around and is interested in a swap, let me know! I’m at: nancys frags aaat gee mayle dot com.

Yeah, stress has been hanging around the past few days. I was giving scritches to the Wild One this weekend and detected a lump right behind her shoulder blade (do doggos have shoulder blades? Dunno). Got in to see the vet this afternoon, and it was just a reaction to vaccines she had a couple of weeks ago. It should go away on its own. Whew! We lost our previous pup to cancer, so any lumps or bumps send me into the anxiety zone. ?

SOTD was Rose Nacree du Desert. Funny story- I had a decant in my bag a few days ago which broke off and started to leak all over my belongings. I didn’t notice but apparently I left an aromatic trail all over my work place so one of my colleagues chased me out to ask me what “skin lotion” I was wearing. I have 10 ml left which I treasure. I wish I could get bottles of a few discontinued Guerlains!

SOTD = Chris Rusak Leaves My Body Extrait

This is the last of the initial series of 13 and is I believe the first Extrait although I could be wrong. What I smelled to today, and I have to qualify, is smokey maple immortelle; the next time I wear it, it could smell different. ?
