Monday scent of the day 10/18

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2021 212 Comments

Welcome to another Monday. It's also Chocolate Cupcake Day, if that helps to ease the pain. Happy 60th to Wynton Marsalis! RIP Tom Morey, and thank you for the Boogie Board. (Update: and RIP Colin Powell, who died today of COVID complications. He was 84.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando for a bunch of errands including a doctor visit, but when I get home this afternoon, I'll be in Prada Candy for Pantone 19-1228 TPX Root Beer ("An herbal brown tone symbolic of the root bark of the sassafras tree").

Reminder: on 10/22, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2021/2022 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Leprechaun is a wondrous green hue emblematic of the mythical imps featured in Irish folklore" or "Friendly and joyful, an optimistic yellow offering the promise of a sunny day.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I like it very much, it’s creamy but not rich and the matcha is not sharp. I wouldn’t call it a personal scent, the silage was good but not overwhelming. Lasting about 8 hours so far.

After a shower, I’ll be wearing Parfums de Nicolai Patchouli Intense. So glad to have some beautiful cool October days at last! I’ve gone crazy for Mrs Meyers Acorn Spice and Apple Cider lately, and have orange clove and Iowa Pine on the way. Mainly hand soaps but also some air fresheners and stuff.

Mmm, orange clove sounds good. I use lemon verbena in the kitchen and love that one. Mrs. Meyers does hands soaps well.

I got dishwashing liquid in Iowa Pine (5) and may go back for more at Target; they were hidden below eye level. I also just ordered 3 of Snowdrop and I hope that is exactly what I get and not Rain.

❤️ the Acorn Spice. Have used it the past couple years, but ever since COVID, I switched to bar soap for my hands. They seem to like it better, but I do miss these seasonals. I should look for the dish soap.

I’m in Shalimar Philtre de Parfum after talk of it on the weekend poll. I sure hope someone splits the new vanilla flanker.
It’s another gorgeous, sunny day today. We are supposed to hit 72 today, 13 degrees above average! I will take it.?? I was hoping to make it through October without turning the furnace on but that was wishful thinking. The nights are just too cold.

Chocolate Cupcake Day? I’ll skip the cupcakes and go straight for CSP Amour de Cacao, which smells like a pan of brownies, near enough. If there’s anyone who doesn’t love this scent, I haven’t met them.

Laundry day, and I am on the third floor and the laundry room is in the basement, so I’m getting my exercise doing four loads. (Unscented detergent and fabric softener, in case you were wondering, plus, for good measure, baking soda to theoretically neutralize any unwanted odours. I want my laundry to smell like clean laundry!)

I hear you- I use unscented washing powders etc too. I want my sillage to come from my perfume collection, not whatever I washed my clothes with! Whenever I find myself in a cloud of someone else it’s usually their laundry detergent and only rarely is it any kind of perfume!

Same here, plus I rather loathe the standard fragrance of scented laundry detergent. I’m always amazed by the sillage other folks leave behind them that’s entirely from their laundry detergent!

I even splurged on Le Labor’s Santal 33, which leaves a lighter(no pickle) version), scent on my towels.
          I use it very sparingly.

I was very envious of your ink advent calendar. I have a collection of kaweco perkeo pens that I keep my coloured inks in ( cartridge only ) and get so much pleasure from them. The nibs are steel but are smooth, a good fun pen. What is your favourite colour for writing? I am going through a green/ black phase, also a purple phase. I have found Lamy inks to be really good for my fountain pens recently ( don’t have a lot of choice here), great colours esp. the purple.

I don’t have a favourite colour, exactly, but I have a favourite ink: Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite, a moody blue-black that I find extraordinarily beautiful. (Even the box and bottle are lovely.) I have a great many inks — about to have 25 more come December — and I enjoy switching colours frequently: I never use fewer than two colours on a journal page.

That’s a beautiful colour and maybe quite similar to the Lamy Crystal ink Benitiote I sometimes use. It is such a joy to find a free flowing, rich pigmented ink that isn’t too gritty. I liked the colours of the Oster inks but they tended to clog . I would be hard pressed to choose between fountain pens/inks and perfume if sent to a desert island. I think ink would win. Mitsouko is never the wrong answer, and there is something particularly autumnal about it, that golden glow — it reminds me of sunlight passing through the leaves that have turned but aren’t quite ready to drop.

I get collagen from a website called Native Path. No affiliation. Their advertising comes across as a little pressured and spammy, and that has gotten worse over time, but their collagen is supposed to be from grass fed animals, it seems really clean, never any lumps or odors, always dissolves, and they have pretty good deals if you buy 4 or 6 at a time. Since I have been taking it for a few months now, my joints hurt noticeably less, and my fingernails are noticeable stronger, less flaking, less splitting. Seems to be helping enough I am afraid to stop. :-)

Happy (?) Monday, everyone. I’m wearing Chergui for Adobe and settling in for what promises to be a long week.

My mom called me last night to say she’s going to Vegas in December and I should come with. I think I probably will, even if my bank account does not want me to take another trip so soon. She sure is living the recently-divorced life to the fullest though, I’m happy for her.

Chergui for the Adobe sample is a very good choice! I was staring at them, wondering what Lutens (because it almost certainly will be Lutens) would match any of them, and I think I’ve made my choice for Friday.

Wearing Carner Barcelona Rima XI and picked up a poetry book with my elevenses instead of looking at online news, which is a much nicer start to the week. Good wishes to you all!

I’ve fallen into the vintage crazyness

Found a couple of 60 ml bottles of vintage extract and ordered them

I also found a 250 ml collectible extract bottle in green case and I am serously contemplating buying it though it is more that my monthly earnings (2,733.90 $ )

I don’t have new clothes that fit but I am buyng vintage Vol de Nuit

Just my two cents (and I’ve cut my budget to the quick for perfumes from time to time): don’t pay for “original packaging” if it’s really the juice you are after. Perfume as an investment is not good; but love of a fine blend is very good.

Inspired by Kanuka, I’m keeping the Monday blahs at bay with Rahat Loukoum. We had actual rain yesterday, and there might be enough on the way this week to effectively end fire season here — hooray! Today is cool and clear and puddlesome, looking like it’ll warm into another gorgeous blue-and-gold fall day. Thawing my fingers and nose after riding bikes to school with my son.

Thanks! It’s definitely bringing me back in time! I don’t know if you are old enough to remember this, but back in the 80s when Dior was advertising it with those “open here to experience” flaps in fashion magazines, it was so strong that the entire news stand would be enveloped in a cloud of Poison. It completely bulldozed the smell of hot dogs, pee, & exhaust fumes on the streets of NYC…

I’m still a little bummed out that I let Soivohle’s Calcutta get away.

I have a teeny tiny bit of Calcutta left in a sample that I’m happy to send you if you want to wear it one last time. It’s from probably 2011-2012? It’s in my give away bag (even though I think it’s quite nice and there’s so little left) because I’ve really tried to pare down. Just send me an email!

Happy Monday! In honor of Chocolate Cupcake Day, my SOTD is SJP’s Covet, with notes of chocolate. I don’t have cupcakes, but had a small GF chocolate brownie to celebrate. The recipe is below.

    Preheat oven to 350
    Mix in a bowl:
    -5 whole eggs
-26.5 oz jar of Nutella, softened in the microwave for 30 seconds
    -1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-3/4 cup flour (I used GF cup 4 cup)
    -1/4 dutch cocoa powder
-1 teaspoon instant coffee (enhances the chocolate flavor)
    -1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix everything in a bowl by hand (it’s a pain, but worth it, the texture is better) and pour into a 9 x 12 greased lasagne pan lined with parchment paper. Bake for 22-24 minutes and let cool completely before cutting.

I discovered the trick to avoiding a grainy or sandy texture with the GF flour blends is to let the batter rest for 15-20 minutes prior to putting in the oven. It allows the grains to absorb the liquid resulting in a less sandy texture.

I love when we veer away from perfume and start swapping recipes (for things that smell amazing, of course)! I’ve been making these as my go-to brownie since the recipe was first published in Gourmet Magazine in the 90s:

      https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/raspberry-hazelnut-brownies-13638

They’re my Platonic brownie ideal: rich and melty without being gooey, wonderfully dark and flavorful.

Ohhh, thank you for the recipe! My next run for these brownies will be a drizzle of salted caramel sauce on top and a layer of blondie (GF) brownie underneath.
As you can see, I’m already working on a New Year’s resolution…

SOTD is Oeillet Bengale but all I smell is a new hair product! :(

QUESTION: Any good recs for a heat primer (doing a lot of flat iron these days) that is either unscented or a very subtle scent?

Currently using Pantene and its potent stuff.

I’m currently using Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Serum, it has a slight coconut scent that doesn’t last long.
Color Wow Dream Coat Anti-Frizz Treatment for Curly Hair is also very good.

Ach, this is another of my pet peeves! I like using specific perfumed hair products at certain times, but not as an everyday shampoo or styling product. The best smooth/tame cream I have tried absolutely reeks of someone’s bad idea of “floral”. Noooo.

Probably my favorite-smelling hair products are the Brilliance and Be Curly lines from Aveda. It’s a bonus that I love the fragrance.
It reminds me of being a hair model in the 1990s, my stylist was a very nordic-looking hunk from Europe. Plus on all accounts, free products, free hair styles, and nice scenery.

    Monday-

    1) SOTD: LM Ambre Vanille. Perfect for a coolish morning going into a mild partly cloudy day. Fall is truly here.

    2) Spent the weekend in Eugene OR with some old college friends that I recently re-connected with. Awesome time- we went to a rock show (just like old times) and drank entirely too much. They have a sweet and beautiful daughter who I got to know!

    3) And now- I will be spending the week getting the house ready for holiday season – I think I will have a number of pop ins from now til Jan- and so am cleaning up after my last tenant (who left his room completely trashed- sigh) and getting bedding and such completely aired and ready for people to spend the night.

Yay for old college friends! When I was home, my dad gave me a box of old letters from when I was in university, and it reminded me of dear friends who now live scattered around the continent, none close to me.

But boo to tenants who trash. What on earth are people thinking?

And I really don’t know what they are thinking. When I lived in rentals I left the place as good as I found it- sometimes better since I would deep clean the carpet and such. But oy vey, the absolute mess I am cleaning up today is…whew!

Wearing AS Sunday on this rather gloomy, chilly, overcast Monday.

Haven’t been around NST much lately, but I wanted to drop by to tell you that Costco is selling Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse for $50 for a two-pack of 100mL bottles. Maybe you already know this! But I didn’t, and that’s the cheapest I’ve seen them in either the US or France :) I know the oil has many fans on NST.

In other news, I got married three weeks ago! Nothing about our lives has changed since the wedding, but the day was truly wonderful and I’m glad we finally did it, after being together for 9.5 years and engaged for 2.5 years.

Hope you’re all well and smell great <3

(I got married fairly early, but had been dating my spouse for 5 years, so it was very much that, and I think back fondly. Many of my friends from that time had a TON of expectations of the day and its meaning for the marriage, and most of them are no longer married.)

A brilliant green day here; the leaves are finally open on the silver birch. I also noticed all the chestnut trees are in full flower. Wearing Fiele Viola : a bitter green , figgy beauty. Perfect . Have a brilliant week everyone. Oh, and I saw Wynton Marsalis play in NZ when I was in my twenties (1980s) : a fantastic concert. What a champion.

Beautiful morning for Fall garden work; then to laundry and making a beef stew for dinner. SotD La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum Intense So Frenchy. It has the rose and patchouli of the original, but then goes to the cotton candy note sweetness and what I think is the isoeugenol base that is so clingy. A study in flanker-ism selected for its modest price on FragranceNet, and for the colorful bottle which I think is cheerful and fun. Hope everyone’s Monday is going well.

Since I’m wearing red today I decided to match my perfume to the Fire Whirl color. I decided to give CdG Rouge a full wearing after just sampling it a few weeks ago, and sadly I’m not a fan. I can’t tell you why exactly. It’s just making my nose unhappy. Oh well. Into the give away baggie the sample goes.

I pulled out my Tauer Pentachord Verdant sample for the Leprechaun colour. I haven’t worn it in forever, and forgot that it does not read as green at all on me, and it’s one of those fragrances that makes the back of my throat ache. And it’s a Tauer, so it’s not going away soon.

In the recent chilly fall weather we’ve been having, I’ve been finding myself craving huge ’70s and ’80s scents, but I don’t own any of them. I’m wondering if I’m remembering them as something different than what they were. I found myself at the mall unexpectedly this weekend, so thought I’d try sampling some, and it seems the Bay only has the multitudinous flankers, not the originals. Oh well, I sprayed Lost Cherry and Chanel No. 5 on paper and let my kid sniff. She decided they were both good but she preferred Lost Cherry, the opposite of her mother. As in all things. :-)

Wearing Philosophy Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere & Pacifica Sandalwood – this is my comfort Milk & Fruit Loops combination.

I’ll pair it with Pantone Fuschia, for the Froot Loop vibe.

    Smelling pretty in Gabrielle Essence.

It’s our 24th anniversary today. Add to that our on and off relationship for 14 years before our nuptials, and we’ve been together a long long time. I gave my husband a card that said:
    Roses are red,
    Violets are blue,
    Sometimes you’re a lot
    But I still love you.

He’s off golfing on the local course’s final day. We have dinner scheduled for Saturday at the local tapas place on its seasonal closing night…an all-you-can eat dim sum style offering.

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/_sj_U6vObUA

Hoooo boy, was it ever hard to get out of bed this morning!

A bit of Monday Madness here. Mr. Jalapeno had scheduled a maintenance appointment for our HVAC unit, and couldn’t remember if it was today or tomorrow. After the appointed time came and went, I put on some lipstick and decided to go about my business. Of course, that’s when the HVAC tech shows up. So out comes the disposable mask. I didn’t want to get lippie on my clothes ones…

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’eau, from the decant stash, courtesy of lillyjo. There’s a really good chance that you have earned an enabler pin with this one! Keeping an eye out for sales now, ha!

I never tire of Chanel No. 5. You smell wonderful! Lillyjo is generous! Let me know if you ever find a Chanel fragrance on sale- especially now that the decant houses can no longer sell them!

I’m going to watch both Nordstrom and Sephora, since they usually have sales before Xmas. It will be interesting to see what shows up.

L’ Eau is a good one, and comes in the cutest 30 ml bottle, just sayin.?

I’ve never seen any on sale for many years but I have had success getting reasonably priced vintage Chanel on eBay. Risky, yes, but if you take the time to message the seller directly with questions about it’s storage and provenance you can greatly minimize that.

I used to get stuff on eBay for years, until for whatever reason, my password no longer worked and I couldn’t resolve the issue. I no longer have an account there.

I think sephora does include it in the sale. If not, Macy’s includes it in their sale If you buy in store. That’s how I ended up with Chance eau Vive this past summer.

If Chanel has more of those red bottles, I’m a goner for sure! I am happily surprised at my initial reaction to L’eau. And on that note, I wonder what the current iteration of Eau Premiere is like?

      You smell really good today!

Good thing you were ready when the HVAC tech arrived. I was mixed up the date for a piano tuning once and was still in bed when the tuner (whom I had never met in person before) rang the doorbell. I ‘m sure throwing on a hoodie did nothing to hide the fact that I was in my PJs when I opened the door. :)

Had I known that the tech was just running late today, I would have skipped the lipstick. Fortunately I did not get any on my face when I put the mask on.

Mr. Jalapeno knows to make appointments like that in the afternoon, when I am functional!

It’s interesting how some perfumes really do have a “preferred weather”. OK maybe not the perfumes themselves, but our noses definitely let us know, don’t they?

I like to mess with Fracas and Carnal Flower’s preferred weather, by wearing them both during stifling summer heat and when it’s biting and frosty out (when they somehow go nicely with ivory cashmere).

SOTD = Zara Tobacco Collection Rich Warm Addictive and Intense Dark

Impulse buy yesterday for the princely sum of $29.90 plus tax for 2 x 100mL! Smells good but longevity is non-existent (2 hours tops with 8 sprays each … not at the same time though!). I prefer the Rich Warm Addictive.

I was inadvertently on theme as the bottles were a shade of Pantone 19-1228 Root Beer!

No perfume pics today but I have some yummy foaming hand soap!

I’m impressed that you’ve been able to avoid calls about voting until now! :) I had a year or two of reprieve when ditched my landline and went cellphone-only, but now the robocallers and phone bankers have gotten ahold of that number too. I guess it is karma for me, since I did some phone banking myself for a friend’s campaign several years ago.

Was testing PdN Rose Pivoine and Rose Royale today, but I forgot which was which, so that experiment failed. I am 80% sure the Rose Royale is the one I haven’t been able to get enough of, with the sparkly citrus notes, but I can’t be sure. If I’m right, then the Rose Pivoine was more of a musk on me than a rose frag.

One Mr. Vee’s cousin and his wife stayed with us this weekend and it was great. I feel like my hosting muscle has atrophied during Covid, though. It took me an hour at the grocery store to figure out what kind of snacks to serve. Pre-Covid me would have taken all of five minutes to figure that out and would have done it before leaving for the store. I forgot to put extra blankets out. Random stuff that was second nature to me two years ago. Oh well, better to get back into to shape with friends who are already comfortable enough at my house to help themselves to whatever they want to feel more at home.

Drinking Fortnum & Mason Wedding Celebration tea and it is delightful.

It sounds like it was a lovely visit in spite of your feeling rusty! And I agree — we should all ease back into hosting with the people we’re closest and most casual with. I’ve been easing back into it by occasionally inviting my aunt over for dinner, and it’s been great. She’s uniformly cheerful and happy to sit on the floor doing puzzles with my son and eating and drinking whatever we have with high praise for all of it.
