Wednesday scent of the day 10/6

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2021 231 Comments

It's Hump Day! Also, National Noodle Day and German-American Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in By Kilian Intoxicated, one of the fragrances I was looking for when we did coffee last week. Of course I found it over the weekend when I was looking for something else. It needs more coffee, though, and if I still had any Demeter Espresso I would layer.

Reminder: 10/8 will be Thinking of You Friday...wear a perfume that reminds you of someone else (a friend? a family member? another NST reader? a celebrity? anyone, really). Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

6 days into the new quarter and my new bottle just arrived – Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifora. I’m calling her Esme.

Esme is Shalimar with a more pronounced Vanilla. The citrus and jet fuel opening is all there, as well as the ambery drydown but everything is softened with a really cosy, not too sweet and utterly natural smelling vanilla. There’s a touch of smokiness too. Some perfumes are a pleasure to smell, while others make you actively breathe deeper. Esme is the latter.

I’m also discovering this scent for the first time today. Really fast shipping from Guerlain website, I ordered it yesterday.

I would summarise this as a soft Shalimar tinged with the vanilla you may find in Cuir Beluga or Angelique Noire. As you say, very natural and not too sweet. Very happy with it ?

And aren’t those presentation boxes they ship in lovely too?!
As it’s developing I seem to be getting a slightly more pronounced Iris as well. It really is great.

Yes, they are! Really worth ordering from Guerlain with the extra samples and beautiful packaging. Also without plastic.. Getting to try Santal Pao Rosa properly.

I think it’s going to take time, they clearly have supply chain issues. Bergdorf Goodman unexpectedly received a few bottles, that’s how I got mine.

On the Guerlain UK website yesterday morning. It seems to be in demand as it’s already out of stock. I believe it was on Notino as well but it’s gone from there too…

My impressions are similar. Fortunately more vanilla than Shalimar, as I can’t wear the original which smells like petrol on me.

Yay for your and a few others getting this so quickly – I hope Guerlain will continue to do good things with Shalimar. Last week, I went to the US website where it was sold out. I added my name to be emailed when it was back in stock, but doubted that would work. I will wait until the holidays, and for some more reviews. I am still getting to know the lovely Philtre de parfum.

I contacted the Guerlain customer service to ask when it would be available in the UK website and they replied 4th of October, so I was looking out for it that day. Looks like I just managed to order before it sold out!

Shalimar Philtre has also been out of stock for a few days and back on the now, so I am sure this will be the case too.

Iam in Cuir de Lancome. Yesterday, when I picked up my daughter at school, she mentioned how wonderful I smelled. This morning I asked her to smell me with the same perfume and she said it wasn´t the same perfume, that she didn´t like it (I had just sprayed it). So I told her about how a perfume transforms throughout the day. It was really fun.

I’m wearing Youth Dew, as an early nod to the CP. I didn’t like this when my mother wore it, not that it necessarily smelled any differently, but in those days I was all about the fresh fragrances. These days I really can appreciate it, and it is perfect for the Texas fall days that we are having right now.

Wonderful! A lot of Estée fragrances remind me of a very dear aunt so I have very positive feelings a towards the brand as a result. I also wear Youth Dew a lot. In a previous job it was the signature scent of an absolute, unflappable lady, so while I didn’t wear it to work then, I wear it often now, and think of these two people when I do. Hope you enjoy your day in it, plus lunch!

The house of many fragrances where I am consulting is celebrating its’ 75th anniversary, so it’s no wonder we think of our moms, aunties and other loved women.
I can see myself w/ my mother while she was at the EL counter getting herself a blue bottle of YD.
She would be tickled to know I am working with them.

    Good morning, everyone on NST!!
Today my bottle of Swan Princess is due to arrive. I wish I had a Barbie sized red carpet to roll out when I open the package!!
Rainy day here in South FL and I am enjoying it dearly. Haven’t worn any perfume yet. When talking about perfume with coffee notes, NOA by Cacharel comes to mind. I always have and always will love NOA. I also first smelled it on this one friend I had In Poland literally 20 years ago before I moved here to the States. So not only do I love NOA for myself but it also reminds me of that friend. I should get a bottle of it on evilbay.

What a lovely memory of Noa. My best friend wore this all through her college years and I bought a discounted bottle for myself at a particularly low point last year (we live in different countries now) – it is still so nice. Wspaniale!

Inspired by someone yesterday, I broke out VC&A Bois D’Iris this morning. That counts for CP points, right?

Feeling very sluggish. Haven’t caught up with all my work that piled up while I was gone for two weeks, and really scratching my head at some of this stuff. Yeah, my sister works in a US hospital, and she’s been hiring non-stop for months to fill open positions. I also get the impression that she could have advanced two levels if she wanted to, since her managers two levels up have all left. Rapid promotion…a random COVID side effect, even in my line of work right now (which is very much not healthcare :-)).

My German-American roots are feeling honoured today! Hmm…maybe I’ll make schnitzel tonight instead of halibut. It would make little Ockeghem happy, of course, though she prefers it Milanese.

I’m wearing Azemour, which is a mistake as I was reaching for ELdO Like This for the CP, but their caps are similar and they’re next to each other in the drawer. Must wear glasses next time. Can’t complain about Azemour, though.

I’m getting intermittent drafts of SJP Stash, via the hair oil I dabbed on my tresses today. I’m not sure how best to apply this, since I really dislike having scent on the palms of my hands. I placed some drops onto a piece of bunched up tissue paper, and then ran that over my hair. It wafts by my nose when I move my head, which is kind of fun.

    Happy hump day, everybody!

The best way with fragranced hair oils is to directly apply via dropper t the mid shaft of hair, then finger comb!

Happy hump day! I’m in a lovely blend of Muresque sprayed this morning (which makes me think of Allo, who generously shared hers) and the remaining drydown of Lost Cherry which I spritzed last night post shower after my brisk 4 mile evening walk. Lost Cherry makes me think of Cazaubon who, if I remember correctly, mentioned that she bought the big bottle and I loved that – yes! take up some space! buy the big one that you love!

LOL yes that’s me! Excess is my middle name. Although in retrospect I’m feeling happy I bought it last year as they’ve jacked the price up yet again, it’s $500 now! Yikes. I got it during the Sephora price match sale for $400.

Yeah, it’s so hard to take your time and consider purchases carefully, feels like a constant race with the risk of discontinuation, reformulation and price hikes. You can no longer expect that when you run out of a favorite perfume you will be able to replenish it, which leads me to buying big bottles even though I have so many.

But she’s on her way home now, so I am covering myself in Shalimar edp to celebrate. I also had a little chat with Donatella earlier, oh my, she is very good company isn’t she?

Wearing Shalimar Philtre de Parfum and wondering if anyone can comment on the differences/similarities with the new Vanilla Planifolia.
I am a total newbie to the world of Shalimar flankers. The only one I’ve tried and loved immediately was the Philtre. I do not like the original as it smells too much like gasoline on me.

Reviews and comparisons of and between Vanilla Planifolia and Philtre interest me, too. Even with Donatella’s beaming encouragements to excess, and my own fondness for the VP promotional video with all those close-ups of M. Wasser & Mm. Jelk dramatically overdone in the just right way, VP does seem to follow another “major” release a bit too soon. I don’t think it’s sour grapes since I just bought Philtre…

I just bought both Philtre and Planifolia and have been analysing their differences. Philtre is very lemon forward and sweeter. Some people in fragrantica say it’s a cross between Shalimar and Mon Guerlain.. I don’t know about that, but I sure smell powdery iris, lemon and sweet vanilla with Shalimar DNA but without the dark “gasoline” notes. Millesime has a very soft Shalimar DNA, also minus darker notes and lots of Guerlain lovely vanilla, similar for example Cuir Beluga. The original Shalimar I wouldn’t smell from up close in the opening but for me the magic happens when you spray on your chest under clothes and the scent starts to bloom. I think the same happens with Philtre, but Millesime is one these scents you keep smelling your wrists it is so delicious!

Usually, I would ask in what context and I was just roll with the punches because it means I don’t have to prepare. I gave my “speech” and he got to the heat of what he was looking for – “DOS”. I was thinking to my self was this guy even born yet and what does he know about DOS? He meant Denial of Service but had to separate out which team does which piece of the pie.

Disclaimer: Musings of a somewhat novice perfumista:

I have a sense of what you mean by “department store perfume” and I’m always curious what I’m smelling or not smelling that makes me read it that way.

I also feel that way about many “masculine” fragrances – there’s a particular note/smell to me that dominates and overpowers the rest of the notes. For example, I have heard such good things about Dior Homme and Prada Homme and their iris notes but to my nose they both have that Thing (technical term).

The newest Dior Homme does not have any Iris in it. They changed it last year. I think the Parfum version still has it, but that seems to be hard to find in the U.S now.

Well. (Clears throat) In my errr expert opinion. I’m not sure. With men’s cologne’s sometimes there is a nose singeing ozone thing. In the case of today’s Narciso, it literally reminded me of that scent you catch in the perfume area of a department store. A scent you’d be happy to inhale on someone giving you a hug, but it wouldn’t catch your eye/nose in a perfume line-up–smelling of everything.

Thank you, that helps. “Nose singeing ozone thing” sounds exactly right. It isn’t necessarily aquatic, which I don’t usually like, but ozonic.

And Robin mentioned that Cashmeran might be a note I associate with certain fragrances (e.g. Why does Chopard Enchanted smell generic to me even though it’s a Dominique Ropion creation?)

          And the education continues…

Thanks for the link Koenigsberg! It’s interesting to read and see what other people’s take on this one is. I found it rather approachable on brief testing and zero scary, mostly a fruity orangey orange blossom. But then my orange blossom reference is Hiram Green Dilettante, which is very indolic and not always well behaved. Maybe this would be a mix of Dilettante and Jo malone OB.

About to get ready for a bittersweet appointment. They take medical appointments regardless of vaxx status.

I’ll end up getting the jab and am crying now. So much pressure from people who have never walked a day in my shoes.
People I love dearly question the ‘nutjobs’ I listen to. I read and bookmark and write down. Not just watch PBS, CNN or FOX.

Have to get my affairs in order first, get rid of as much as possible and get Living Will. I want my Last Rites prior to going in and letters left for those who have constantly been on my rear. I know people will say others care, but unless you have really scary medical conditions that can kill you, those that love you should lay off. So much more to it, but I won’t bore you.
I know this is very divisive, so please remove if so.
I’ll be wearing Heavenly. My mother and father are here with me in that scent and boy, do I need them.
I’ll read comments later, if any and hope there’s no hate here. I cant take it anymore.

I also have a medical condition that made me extremely hesitant and incredibly anxietized about getting the vaccine (as well as allergies to medications that crop up out of nowhere and have resulted in anaphalaxis.) After shot 1 I was a mess (from anxiety, not a medical reaction) and only got the 2nd because I knew we’d need passports eventually and I wanted to be able to visit my family in Canada. As little is known about the condition I have (it’s similar to long covid) I didn’t have anyone to turn to for medical advice.

I hope the first shot goes well and that you’re also taking care of the accompanying stress and emotional effects.

There are myriad legitimate reasons for people to avoid vaccination. (And which is why rates will never get near 100%). I’m sorry if you’re not getting that message from the culture, or even more so, from the medical community.

Best to you and hoping for a good response and quick recovery.

Very good wishes to you AnniePerfumes, I hope all goes well. Please try to check in later and tell us how you are!

And just to clarify, I see nothing at all divisive in your post. Everybody must know there are medical conditions which make vaccines much scarier for some people than for others. In any case, no need to debate it here, whatever you decide to do.

A belated reply to Cicely yesterday, I think the Mary Greenwell range was discontinued a few years ago. Plum is nice, it’s fruity, but not too sweet.
And today’s dress has roses on it, so today’s perfume will be Paestum Rose from Eau d’Italie.

Thanks Gaynor! I know Mary Greenwell from her make up artistry but didn’t know she had a perfume line. So many nice sounding things are discontinued. I may follow the example of some NSTers and explore eBay for lost perfumes.

SotD YSL Cinema edp. It is moving into “love” territory today, whereas it usually is just “oh nice.” I got close to eight sprays, but I did not count. The name does not really click with me on this one. I worked in a movie theater in high school, and the array of smells I remember were not so great and not an array I’d associate with a YSL fragrance. Zero CP points!

Read with much interest the comments about the new Shalimar flanker, by chance I am wearing the original, the parfum de toilette version which lasts all day, so I’m still wearing it this evening.

For Lillyjo, about vintage Paloma Picasso: it’s very opulent, perhaps too much so, it wears me rather, so this little 30ml will lasts me ages, I think the main difference with the modern version which is not a wallflower either is the presence of inky oakmoss in the drydown.

SOTD = Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka

The name is true to what I smelled. I love it!

I am with the CP because it reminds me of floragal who did not care for it. This makes the world more interesting. I miss seeing her in NY but we will meet again!

In other news, I am feeling much better today. The random body aches are pretty much gone. The arm pain is likely to remain for the next few days and I am fine with that!

Question – has anyone bought a portable extra monitor that they are happy with? I am looking to get one for a Windows laptop but don’t want a tabletop version that would take up half of my kitchen table (not using the leaf to extend it as it will shrink the space in my kitchen). Thank you.

Last call for freebies I mentioned at this past weekend’s Lazy Weekend Poll. There’s 3 left. Place dibs there and send me an email.

German-American Day today, huh? So that’s why I picked up a 6 pack from my favorite microbrewery today when I was getting groceries… ??

Had my delayed dentist appointment today around lunchtime. Nothing major, just my usual, although I did have a question for my dentist. She said that things are looking good. ?

SOTD = back in Aedes de Venustas EdP. It’s perfect for the weather right now, and fits like a perfect pair of jeans.

National Noodle Day, we are having chicken lasagne for dinner! Partial points without even trying.

I’m in some vintage Oscar which always reminds me of a good high-school friend. She bought me a bottle of Oscar for my birthday way back when. Sadly we lost touch but I think of her often. We sure had a lot of fun together.

Random question, has anyone purchased from indiescents before?

Chiming in a day late, but I ordered from Indiescents earlier this year or last year, can’t remember. They were wonderful! Included extra samples and sent me a note that they’d be receiving new 4160 Perfumes soon since I’d included a bunch of their samples in my order. I’d definitely buy from them again.

Chiming in late to say hi everyone! I’m wearing Atelier Cologne Mistral Patchouli since I got some on myself making a sample (hi Jalapeno!), so just sprayed some more on me : ). This one is so unusual–I really like it.

I was off work today and watched the first two episodes of Ted Lasso. I’ll have to start a free trial of Apple TV if I want to watch more, which I do! Can I binge two seasons in one week? I don’t have to work this weekend, so that will help!

Back from a tiring day at work, but good tiring. I’m just not used to being so social! I had coffee with a coworker, attended someone’s work anniversary celebration, and met a few people I had previously only seen on Zoom. I’m not getting too much work done on these days back in the office. ?

I wore Sisley Izia la Nuit. All the Shalimar flanker chatter is making me want to wear some Shalimar, and to experiment with layering too. I’m thinking I’d love to try Cuir Beluga with Shalimar, sacrilegious!!
