Tuesday scent of the day 10/5

Posted by Robin on 5 October 2021 214 Comments

It's Tuesday and World Teachers’ Day. (Thank you, teachers!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in By Kilian Smoke for the Soul. My tea, to match my fragrance: Numi Chinese breakfast brewed with fresh cardamom.

Reminder: 10/8 will be Thinking of You Friday...wear a perfume that reminds you of someone else (a friend? a family member? another NST reader? a celebrity? anyone, really). Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Tauer Phi Une Rose de Kandahar, for another rainy, cooler day in the 60’s.

I was able to sleep last night night, so I am feeling better today. On my second cup of coffee with pumpkin pie spice creamer and ready to jump to my next work meeting.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone! ??

Yummy! Love all this, and Pumpkin Spice!
I don’t want to rush things, but I am looking forward to the Christmas flavors, Egg Nog (especially ice cream from Mitchell’s) is a favorite!

No, but I have something like that from chamomile — weird dreams and increased middle-of-the-night wakings, which is just weird since most people take chamomile to sleep better.

So, nearly every plant material has some constituent that bothers one person and not another, right?

Interesting. The last time I drank it several nights in a row was visiting a friend out of town, so my sleep/dreams may have been different without me noticing. I’ll have to notice when I drink it at home.

    Good morning.
    Sotd is Cherry Punk.
I just blind bought EL’s Sensuous Stars from their new “Luxury Line”. It promises “12 hour wear” but I mainly bought it because I am a sucker for lavender. Plum, lavender and orris sounds like a pretty combination.
I read somewhere that a set of minis will become available and I am interested…

Wearing Parfums de Nicolai New York to cut the humidity. I miss October weather, it’s usually my favorite month but we’ve had nothing but rain, gloom yet warm and muggy days so far. It’s hard to get motivated but hanging around with the cat isn’t a bad thing 🙂

Good morning all, my SOTD is Dior’s Dune for women. It’s warmth is calling to me.
On second cup of coffee and still sleepy, but so much going on, no time to nap. We have a plumber coming over to fix various issues with the shower. This will not be an easy fix or fun but here we are!

Makeup is Chanel foundation, lippie is by Face Stockholm, Veil lipstick in Friendship, a pretty coral pink. I love this color and don’t wear it often enough. My favorite color by them is Cranberry veil, a classic cinnamon-red.

I’ve only worn makeup a handful of times since 3/20 but I still bought 4 lipsticks in that time. Dumb, because I never stopped wearing a mask so I only wear chapstick when I’m out.

Buying a lipstick here and there is just self care as far as I’m concerned. Even if you only slick it on at home, it makes you feel better.

I really miss lipstick. I wore my favorite Pat McGrath MatteTrance color today — Venus in Furs — thinking it might not transfer to my mask so much as other lip colors have. No luck there. Even though I am fully masked all the time in campus buildings and when teaching, I still have to get from home to work and I really like having color on my lips.

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy is famous for wearing Cranberry veil lip stain by Face Stockholm. It’s a sheer color that is easily buildable, compliments most skin tones, and leaves behind a nice stain. I’ve worn it for about 20 years now and it’s easily a favorite.
For another great brick red, MAC Spice It Up lip sheer is a marvelous brick red, and a very close dupe to the Face Stockholm lippie.

I wore a cranberry sheer lipstick for years and at my wedding that I bought at Barney’s. They stopped selling it, and something is making me think it was either bought by or made by Face. It was the perfect lipstick. I will look at them.

I’m wearing Ava Luxe No. 23 today, and I smell wonderful. This is one of my all time favorite perfumes, and I was sad when the perfumer discontinued it. I even went so far as to email her a couple of times, asking if there was a leftover bottle I could purchase, but no joy.

I’m inclined to hoard it, because I hate the feeling of running out of something that I love, never to experience it again. However, intellectually I know it’s better to wear it than to have it in the bottle, so whatevah — I’m in a solid three spritzes.

Lisa D, I share your instinct – wanting to hold onto things and not wear them as much as I would like so that I don’t lose them. I’m sure there’s a parable or two written about just this sort of thing.

But I tell myself “Tis better to have sprayed and lost than never to have sprayed (8x’s mininum!) at all.”

Exactly — I know it’s better to use it (and who am I to argue with Tennyson?), but I kinda wince a little inside whenever I spray something that I’ve got very little of. On the other hand, it’s good practice in letting go….another thing at which I’m not so great.

Wearing the Obsession I got from the rummage sale over the weekend. I was worried when sniffing in the bottle that it would be way too amber-y for my taste. I applied 1.5 sprays to chest only, much less than anything else I’ve worn all pandemic, and the amber isn’t too overpowering. I think 5mL is plenty of this though.

Scent: A single spritz of OJ Frangipani. Doesn’t really make sense with the weather today, though. I haven’t collected fragrances for fall – I’ve been a summer fragrance fan. But this year, I feel a shift in the works. I’ve been wearing some Perris Monte Carlo Arancia Di Sicilia lately, which I’m enjoying.

Other: heading out shortly to shop houseplants. Haven’t had more than one or two over the last several years, but we’re empty nesters now with no pets – at least for the time being. And it occurred to me the other day that maybe some green around the house will make winter more bearable? Remains to be seen, but it’s worth a try!

Both those scents are great. We must have similar tastes. I, too, have foregone the houseplants because of cats. Our current one may be less interested…maybe I should try something.

Well, I went, I browsed, I didn’t purchase. My daughter’s cats occasionally bounce back for a day or two of catsitting, so I’ll try to stick to cat-friendly plants. Gotta do a bit of research!

Phalaenopsis orchids are cat safe plants, and tolerant of newbie houseplant owners. I even got a couple of them to re-bloom. But I haven’t had orchids in a while, because kittens will destroy anything and everything.

Wearing L’Interdit EDP today which was a 3rd quarter acquisition and just updated the buying poll…please go feast your eyes on my list. ?

I bought about 20 bottles give or take somehow in Q3… ehaeheh but I also sold off around 15 on Ebay in the same timeframe.??‍♀️

I find selling on Ebay pretty easy so my goal going forward is to rehome stuff much sooner if I don’t still love and wearing it regularly. I am also thinking of picking a goal of 40 or 50 full bottles and staying at or below that too. The Closet of Shame has more to be revealed but we do have some progress!??

World Teacher Day?! Perhaps all teachers should celebrate by buying more perfume? I know I’m happy for any excuse…

I’m starting on the CP in Replica By the Fireplace. A former student, then babysitter, now family friend gave me a sample set last November for my birthday. I was touched by the gift, and we had a lot of fun spraying the many samples. This pretty much just smells like toasted marshmallows to me, but that’s nothing to complain about!

Adorable hubby having a hard day at work – people issues.
I am having a hard day at work – the network to my clinical apps is intermittently down, and I am locked out, and on hold with tech support, suggesting I am not the only one!
But I do have internet to get to NST! Contemplating ordering some Dame samples – has anyone smelled that new one Singularity, or the Linden soliflore? I like the upgrade to the website, and am tempted by some of the dad’s artwork…I love a family endeavor like this.
Not so sure about the models walking barefoot in the desert – the models make it clear they don’t want to put their feet down on all those prickly, insect infested desert scrub…they should have combat boots on with those diaphanous gowns… 🙂
I don’t understand why female pain is considered a selling point for anything, really…is it a unconscious display of punishment for original sin, or something?
LOL, I just finished a really great book about treating trauma, “The Body Keeps the Score” and now I am seeing psychoanalytic indicators everywhere…still on hold. I should stop talking before I get more aggravated. I have my COVID booster scheduled for Saturday morning. Gotta keep up on the chassis maintenance, as my sister calls it.
    Have a good day, all.

Speaking of books I am reading Matrix by Lauren Groff

      ?
I am half way through the Matrix and it’s gotten really stale for me. There are too many characters to keep track of and none of them have something unique that is a reminder of which is which. There’s a lot of repetition also of the daily life in the Abby. ?

I’ve been thinking about that one — on the waitlist for it at the library. I just read her “Fates and Furies” in the meantime, to get a taste for her writing, and I’m on the fence about it. (It was interesting enough, but I found her characters aren’t really all that believable as soon as you take a step out of her universe.)

I am a medievalist by training (not anything close now), and thought maybe I’d like reading about Marie de France. But fiction set in the Middle Ages (or pseudo-Middle Ages…e.g., fantasy) often rubs me the wrong way. Now I’m thinking that if I don’t find her characters believable when set in the present day, I really wonder how believable they’ll be in a period she likely doesn’t know as well. Oh well, I might give it a try when I get it in a year or so. If it doesn’t stick, I’ll just abandon it and pass it on to the next on the list.

        It’s very unfair…
I had an ex boyfriend ask me once “why are you not more feminine and wear make up and heels like the other girls?” At an impressionable age, I did give it a try and warmed up to make up eventually, but not the heels! I embrace flats and ballerinas, dresses, flexible pencil or A line skirts and sheer cloth pants. So much happier since!

Mon Guerlain EdT travel spray after shower and using my new Old Spice Oasis anti-perspirant. They discontinued my beloved Amber a few years ago. This one has a nice, soft lavender scent to it. It doesn’t project, but I like putting it on.

Lots of nail pounding going on at the next door duplex – they’re under the gun to get it completed in November. I wandered through it on Sunday briefly, and I decided I much prefer our floor plan even though it’s about 150 sq ft smaller. I just like the flow of ours. And I swear it was as if someone had our furniture in mind when they drew it up.

Woke up groggy and cross today and not in a mood to be pushed around by my perfume, so I’m wearing Arbolé for low-key woodland snuggles. The downside of living in a tiny, rural town full of owls and foxes and uncompromised starlight and sweet, friendly neighbors who wave when I walk my son to school and flag me down for a glass of wine when I walk him home is that we have no functional amenities here. Thus, today I’ll be driving 40 minutes each way for a 15-minute doctor appointment.

I blame the wine industry here. We actually do have a little commercial center in town, but every space other than the post office is occupied by a tasting room that caters to tourists. I wish there was a County ordinance that would ensure space was held for a hardware store, an urgent-care clinic and pharmacy, and a café for the sake of the people who actually live here!

As me and my friends regroup and think about a place in France this is what we are on the look out for- to be near a village/town with good amenities not more than 30 minutes away.

Where in France are you looking?

My criteria for perfect lake house (my dream retirement) is a 15 minute (safe!) bike ride to a town with a library, post office, small store, coffee even if not great coffee, ice cream. Larger town with doctors & decent supermarket, no more than 20 minute drive.

My sister’s lake house almost but not quite meets those criteria. I am trying to convince her to hypothetically move when I hypothetically move to my hypothetical lake town.

And if anyone knows this town in the New England area, do tell!

I am looking in two places:
          1) Around Tours and environs ( Loire Valley)- It is really nice and has a university & engineering hub There are loads of bike lanes, walking trails and trains that can take you to Paris within 2 hours (TGV).
          2) Around Beziers and environs (Languedoc-Rousillion) another place with an engineering/university hub. Also great weather and scenery, very diverse, lower prices and you can drive to ocean beaches. It’s a great alternative to Marseilles.

My criteria is closeness to a large town with all the amenities within a 30 minute drive, a place that is lively with students, faculty and entrepreneurs, some land for gardening, maybe a swimming pool, and enough space to host friends on long stays. Ideally I would like to rent it out part time until I am fully ‘retired’ but if i am sharing with friends -split a chateau 3 or 4 ways, say- and suddenly this becomes an affordable Golden Girls situation.

          3) Have you considered Finger Lake living in NYS for lake living? Right is peek leaf peeping season, harvest time for wine, cider, etc and Letchworth park has all of your hiking and skiing needs!

Languedoc-Rousillon — how lovely that looks, I wish I spoke French.

Good luck, hope you find a perfect place.

I have never been to the Finger Lakes, might be too much snow for me…might turn out that all of New England is too much snow for me! But Pennsylvania summers are becoming unbearable, so I do want to get farther north.

Robin, Little Compton RI is awfully bucolic and pleasant for biking, has good ice cream and superb farm stands and fish markets, and ocean swimming that doesn’t set your teeth on edge — absolutely astounding to this Californian. When I’m there I basically only get out of the water to buy strawberries and lobsters, and then get back in again…

Very busy morning and it’s only 1015 here! Took another whack at my hair since I was in a hotel last night, cut another 2-3” off, but I really want the back to be a bit shorter…

Found a couple nice public parks with shade/sun/flush toilets/riverside parking/trash cans, etc. Fixed my Maxx Fan in the van that alarmed and shut down, and now about to put away clean laundry, make the bed, sweep, wipe down surfaces with disinfectant and generally make the van more orderly.

Doing all these chores while wafting Safron Troublant.

    I need more coffee! ☕️

And apropos to nothing, if anyone is in the area I recommend the Umpqua River Scenic Byway. Beautiful drive, but not much color change here yet.

Light vanillas are too rare, in my opinion, but they’re what floats my vanilla boat. Except for Vaniglia, which is nothing if not loud yet somehow always behaves itself on me.

Oops — correct that to Vanilia. I was feeling extra Italian, apparently.

SOTD = Mad et Len Petits Papiers EDP

I am wearing this in honor or cazaubon, who came to the rescue when LuckyScent was out of it for some time! It’s resinous, spicy, woody, incense, patchouli – so good!

In other news, I woke up lazily this morning and decided I cannot face the commute. My head and body are achy here and there, nothing insurmountable, and I am stubborn and refuse to take acetaminophen. This too shall pass. Back to work! ?

And I just wanted to share that while my company is not mandating vaccination, it is getting more difficult for the unvaccinated to feel like their voices have been heard. If you can’t beat them, join them?

I also wanted to mention that I asked the pharmacist at CVS if they are offering Janssen / Johnson & Johnson booster shots for when I am eligible (not for a while). He said that currently the pharmacy only has the 2-shot versions but who knows if they will get it at this particular location. I may have to hunt when the time comes. The good news is all the immediate family got the same shot so I wouldn’t be alone in searching for a place.

My son got a Moderna single shot as a booster after getting the j&j — I am NOT advising anything, obviously, because I know nothing, but I had read that is what a number of medical professionals were doing for themselves so it is what we did.

I do know the FDA is currently considering mix & match boosters.

          Thanks, Robin. Good to know.

For now, we are sticking to team Janssen / J&J unless we don’t have a choice but I’m thinking that something catastrophic would have to happen before we’re faced with no choice.

SotD Coriolan. I got it for the bottle and because I trust Guerlain to make scents that will interest me. I suspected it would not be my style but I enjoyed it; I need to wear it a few more times to get to know it, but it did fade after about 4 hours. Maybe because of its age? Have a nice evening everyone.

I’m in a sample of D.S. & Durga’s D.S. today. I get saffron, vetiver, and oud, but none of the gardenia, frangipani, or rose, which is too bad bc I was all ? at the prospect of those six notes together.

Feeling decompressed relaxed after spending last week in a cabin in rural Vermont. I declared it vanilla week and brought all of the vanilla samples I could find to test. I wanted to keep it interesting while staying the same family (and not overwhelming the lone sweater I packed). That resulted in a purchase of a FB of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla when I got home, and adding a couple of floral vanillas from Maison de Vanille to my wishlist.

The downside of no email access on vacation is the week’s worth of email on the first day back. ? Was so busy getting through it yesterday that I *forgot* to confess to Donatella. But I have no doubt that she would be pleased.

Drinking a strong Assam to help me power through these emails and prep all of my swapmeet decants.

Feeling well rested on this gloomy, damp Tuesday. According to Mr. Jalapeno, I slept right through an epic thunderstorm last night. He said the house was shaking from the thunder. Couldn’t prove it by me, though. ? ⚡

SOTD = the original Aedes de Venustas EdP, from the sample stash and one of you wonderful NSTers. Woooooooooooooooooooow! This one is amazing. What a pity that it is d/c’ed. But Thank You for sharing a bit of this fantastic stuff with me.

Not sure how widely spread out last night’s storms were. I do know that it was a possibility for my area.

Not a Magic Pillow, but Magic Kitty Snuggles! One of our cats likes to sleep next to me on the human bed.

Oh, I wish I had that kind of magic here! My beloved late cat had this wonderful/horrible habit of snuggling against the top of my head on my pillow, and then taking deep, stretching breaths until she’d slowly pushed me entirely down off the pillow in my sleep so that she could sleep on it like her own personal bed. Always made me laugh when I’d wake up weirdly scrunched down in the bed.

I wore No. 5 L’Eau today. It reminds me of my mom. Was so busy yesterday that I didn’t confess to Donatella (or even read the posts) yet, but I will.

Yesterday I finally decided it was time to buy the bottle of Dries Van Noten that’s been on my list forever. So of course it’s been discontinued and I couldn’t find it anywhere. Sigh. And on Donatella’s day too – that seems insulting somehow.

Perhaps you can call the NYC boutique on Madison? Ask for Dinara.

I see that Arielle Shoshana carries the line too.

As for me, it caused me to not have air to breathe so I pretty much had to dismiss it as something for me. It smelled good though!

We’re sunny and in the 80s where I’m at so it’s Chevalier Vert from Olympic Orchids for me. This is summer gardening as a child with my grandmother and her sister: green, garden-y crushed stems and leaves.
