Thursday scent of the day 9/23

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2021 171 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! (And, a bunch of musical birthdays: John Lomax, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Julio Iglesias, Bruce Springsteen, Ani DiFranco.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I never smelled Miss Piggy's 1998 fragrance, Moi, but if it didn't smell like Robert Piguet Fracas, it should have. So that's my fragrance today.

Reminder: 9/24 is the birth date of Jim Henson and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Wear whatever fits for whatever reason — scent a muppet or a Fitzgerald character, maybe? (Extra reading: We Deserve The Muppet Great Gatsby at The Verge.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is a screen shot from the promo for the 2014 QVC lifestyle collection Moi by Miss Piggy (I am pretty sure that collection did not include a perfume).

Good morning way too early from west coast.
SOTD is Rose Ta’if again. I could still smell it on my bathrobe, so why not smell great again?

Has anyone tested St. Rose fragrances? There was a brief mention in NY Magazine yesterday. the Desert Nomad and Gypsy Cowboy look interesting.

    Hello fragrant friends

I am in the queen today, Shalimar, I am doing a week of this beauty. Though this one is my favorite, the Madagascar flanker. Very smokey vanilla sexiness.

I got a hair cut yesterday and my hair stylist finally made me cave. She has been wanted to give me a copper brown glaze and told me to come out of the closet (she thinks I am a closeted red head) I was back and forth. Finally the last straw was, ‘Do you know your eyes are actually hazel? If you don’t believe me let me dye your hair this color” And she was right. I love the color. It won’t last so if I change my mind it washes out eventually. I have to say I am in love. So was Mr. L. And my eyes actually do have a lot of green. Never knew.

Agree! You might need to tweak your makeup colors a little as well, depending on your pre-bronzed-hair makeup palette.

I’m in Narciso Rodriguez for her L’absolu from a generous NSTer.
It’s another gorgeous fall day here. The nights have been getting quite chilly but the days are sunny with blue skies. Yesterday we ate lunch outside basking in the sun.
My son is home and I am loving it. We spent the whole day together yesterday just talking and catching up. In the afternoon he hung out with his “baby” sister playing video games and I could hear them talking and laughing together. My favorite sounds in the whole wide world.☺️
In skin care related news, I’ve been using a new retinol cream at night from First Aid Beauty and so far, so good. My skin has been tolerating it and I haven’t woken up with red, flaky skin.

You smell fabulous! Yes, retinol can be quite irritating until the skin acclimates. The anti-aging benefits are so worth it though.

Thanks! Yes, I tried one from neutrogena a few years ago and my skin did not like it. I gave up for a few years and am trying to dip my toe back in. This one is .25%, I’d like to work up to the Drmtlgy one that’s .5%- have you tried that one? Agreed, when I met with an esthetician several months ago, she said the anti-aging routine should be vitamin c in the morning and retinol at night.?

I use Retin A on my face and I love the retinol from DRMTLGY for my neck/chest area. It is a great product.

Retin A and retinol use is complicated. It’s well worth the benefits, but I started out very slowly, with an over the counter retinol every two nights (non-consecutive nights), after two weeks, increased to three times per week.
When I graduated to real Retin A, I edited everything else in my routine, no more scrubs, limited use of acids, and switched to a mineral sunscreen, which I found was less irritating.

I use Olay Retinol night cream, and I am not afraid to admit I buy it from Costco. HAHA! Its gentle on my skin for everyday, and I have very sensitive skin. Since I use it everyday I figured why not buy it in bulk..

Ha! I’ve been using that one too! My bestie recommended it for sensitive skin. I went through a tub of the regular and now I’ve just about finished a tub of the “MAX” I think my skin is ready to handle something a little stronger. I have no idea the % in Olay and when I emailed the company their response was that they could not divulge that information.?

Dzing today. Cloudy morning but at least it’s not raining. I’m not even sure I should say this out loud, but we *may* get some of the last loose ends done in the reno today, and then the contractor will take his equipment that’s been sitting here mostly unused all summer, and then I can have my dining area back. It’s been like pulling teeth to get the contractor back here to finish a bit of painting and put back the pot light they took out. Fingers crossed.

Once that’s done, we’re just waiting for the refrigerator panels to come in, and we’re done. It really shouldn’t take 6 months to renovate a small kitchen, but here we are.

I’m wearing Zelda today for the CP and because the cool, foggy morning calls for it. The funny thing about this perfume is I’ve been saying for years that I’ll buy a bottle once I use up two generous spray samples. Well, I finally finished one sample in the late spring and still have more than half of the other. This perfume is so strong that I only need 1 tiny spray to each arm and my neck, so at the rate I’m going, it’ll be 5 years or longer before I finish this remaining sample.

Sitting next to my mother’s bed in the hospital after spending the whole night in the emergency room. I am waiting for the surgeon to arrive at any time now to see how her serious case of diverticulitis is going to be addressed. She has been unconscious the last couple of hours. God will provide.

I am still in the remnants of Diptyque Venise from the Sniffapalooza masterclass last night. I like it, but I don’t feel I need a full bottle. In some way it reminds me of Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay. Maybe my nose is playing tricks!
I am in urgent need of my second cup of coffee. I hope to get it soon!

My husband and I are taking the day off today and tomorrow as an early anniversary celebration, and the weather here is gorgeous. I am wearing a bright yellow/orange blouse with turquoise jewelry. The turquoise earrings and necklace were my anniversary gift. When I thought of these bright colors, I thought Esprit d’Oscar fit them. We are going to an outdoor restaurant today and I am very excited.

It’s cool again here, so I’m in Memoirs of a Trespasser … more for Fitzgerald, but now I have a mental image of Kermit sitting in a dark library, whisky in one hand and a cigar in the other.

I can see that, but then I can also see the cigar causing Kermit to cough uncontrollably, which he tries to stop by taking a gulp of whisky and that only making it worse — cue audience laughter. The Muppets have such great physical comedy, especially considering their range of motion is so restricted.

So, FYI. I looked up various iterations of the mix, and some have cumin. My version does not. I am a bit of a cumin-a-phobe in perfume (although not in cooking!!), so depending on your feelings about cumin and whether the mix you sniff has cumin in it, ymmv about its gorgeousness as a potential perfume scent.

So I ordered a sample of Eau de Jane having heard so much about it. My order was acknowledged on August 1st. A month went by and I haven’t heard anything. I was just about to send a follow-up when I got an email with a mea culpa and to watch out for the package. It is now September 23rd and still nothing. Should I let it go and just wait for it to come or send a follow-up? I don’t want to come off as uncaring but almost 8 weeks for a sample is a long time to wait. The last time this happened was when I ordered from Australia and the perfumer lied through her teeth for 3 months until she found someone reliable in the U.S. who sent me the samples (they were NOT good).

I think any kind of moderate to high expectations for ANYTHING these days is a lesson in futility and aggravation. I have stopped ordering from Amazon, ordering from Luckyscent, ordering almost EVERYWHERE, stopped all splits/samples because people/companies just straight up lie. I don’t blame you for being angry, but either you need reset your expectations or stop completely because otherwise you will be in a continuous state of aggravation. Sorry.

I was just talking about this with some co-workers as I tend to be very direct and I pretty said that I probably come off as being too aggressive but what Au really want to convey is confidence.

You are absolutely right about setting expectations. As in, hey fellow employee, why do you think the company has to reimburse you for losing food in your refrigerator because of a power outage? Or why am I not eligible for a disaster grant (small) — ? maybe because you uh, make $400k annually?

That is a long wait if they said it was on the way. That said, I’ve been trying to give a long grace period for orders to arrive because the supply chain is a mess right now, and on top of that the post office is dealing with unusually high demand while particularly understaffed. I appreciate the companies (like Scents of Wood) that are doing a good job of communicating those issues to customers so we can calibrate our expectations.

I’m wearing Jubilation 25 today. I meant to get a sample of XXV, but ordered 25 by mistake. I’ve made worse mistakes. 🙂 Lots of resin, incense, brown spices (the labdanum), ylang ylang, rose and patchouli. It is brown and viscous; translucent but so dark that you aren’t really getting much light passing through.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It is undoubtedly a beautiful perfume; but I’m not sure it is a scent that I would actually wear, especially since I like my incense to lean woody, whereas this leans fruity. The projection is also nil. I have to have my nose just barely away from my skin to smell it, and I put on a good amount.

Drinking black tea w/ chocolate & coconut.

My sample arrived a few weeks ago, and I assume ZGO makes decants them to order, so probably a fresh decant but no idea on how old their supply is. I do get the floral notes as well, so perhaps the incense is better described as leaning fruity-floral, but “fruity-floral” feels like a pejorative descriptor these days 🙂

That is a pity about fruity floral being a put down. Some of them are well done. But it’s the cost of a genre having become ubiquitous.

I have seen in person how different people can smell completely different wearing the same perfume, so I could also chalk it up to skin/personal chemistry.

I’m in Penhaligon’s Elixir, a nicely spicy incense with cardamom, a little rose, and lots of woods. I like it a lot. It’s probably my favorite from this house (although the bar isn’t set too high, since they haven’t produced a lot of scents that I love).

Readers, for those of you who read my Rite Aid rant from earlier in the week, it just got worse. I went back to the drive through, because after thinking about it, I felt that I really shouldn’t have to go set up a new account at a different pharmacy. Everything went sideways very quickly. It was probably one of the worst customer service interactions I’ve ever experienced. The pharmacist refused to fill the prescription, and when I objected, started telling me to pick up my prescription from the tray and leave. I kept saying, “Wait, why on earth would you refuse to fill my prescription? That’s ridiculous.” Ultimately, he turned his back on me and walked away from the window, leaving me sitting there in my car, kind of stunned.

Needless to say, yesterday I set up an account at a different pharmacy in my little town, and got the prescription filled in about twenty minutes.

I FEEEEEL you so much! People, even people in the service industry, are angry and rude, seemingly getting away with it because everyone is short staffed. Yesterday I went to a campground and spoke with the “Host” and asked him if there were any available spots for one night (because none of the sites had updated dates). He told me “Make a reservation” as he turned his back and walked away. I said, “I’m not able to make a reservation for tonight because of the way the reservation system is set up!” Which he KNOWS! His response- “That’s you tough luck.” I was so shocked I didn’t have a response, which would have been pointless anyway since he was already back in his camper. ?

I get that everybody’s a little on edge. I’m there, too. But sheesh. How hard would it have been to say, “I’m sorry, there aren’t any spots left,” or “There’s a spot left, but I can’t let you have it unless you make a reservation,” or “No, I can’t give you a spot.” I know nothing about hosting campgrounds, but even I can come up with 17 different responses that would have been better than that.

hajusuuri, I so wished YOU HAD BEEN THERE WITH ME. I’m not a wallflower by any means, but it left me speechless and weirdly uncertain about how to react. I sat in my car, looking at the pharmacy window, wondering what to do. After about a minute, it was clear that nobody was going to come to the window and address me, so I drove off.

I went home, got on the computer, and filed a complaint with their corporate office.

Lots and lots of rain, thunder and lightning this afternoon. But! There is the promise of absolutely beautiful early fall weather for tomorrow, w00t w00t!

Spooky has been getting a probiotic treat before her lunch for the past couple of days. She did eat some of her wet food today, so that’s definitely an improvement over how she was doing yesterday. I have a different probiotic supplement to try after the treats are gone. I figure double-dosing is a Very Bad Idea.

Yesterday was just Spooky being picky. She ate plenty of her kibble, which is a prescription food. Based on observation, I think that she might have a food sensitivity or allergy to chicken and turkey. Duck seems to be fine. So I am trying my best to feed her “novel proteins”.

I tried feeding her some plain yogurt when she had severe intestinal issues, and she rain away from it. So in addition to being picky, she is also skittish.

I work all week just to struggle the next week. I swear to you, our customers are spending so much money it’s mind boggling.
My store just got an award for being best in the district. Job security.

Childcare assistance $300 per month per child; there are nuances but they pale in comparison to having the money on hand to those who qualify. Also, if they are paying via credit card, credit seems to have been easier to obtain.

I figured the 300, but geeze, it’s just been a madhouse all year.
From my unscientific observation, I am seeing mostly cash and debit. Maybe 30% credit.

I noticed a lot more people in the grocery stores the last 2 times I went. Maybe everyone is stir crazy and buying on credit?

On the plus side, there were a lot of very polite people the last time I went to Wegman’s. Notably so.

In honor of F. Scott Fitzgerald, SOTD is 4160 Tuesdays’ An Excess of Carelessness, a major love for me. I could also turn to Tocca’s scent Liliana, which makes me think of a young Daisy, as I wrote about here: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/tag/the-great-gatsby/.
